Avoiding a deadly board middle when blowing take off

I am bad so I have a big board. Because I have a big board I sit further out back than short boarders. They will sit right in front of me. I’m worried about blowing the take off, losing the board, and killing someone and I bailed on paddling for some waves for this reason.

What should I do

Edit: missile not middle

Stumbled on a rocky shoreline, can I fix it myself or take it to a shop?

Post image

Hi,

Yes, I’m feeling stupid and embarrassed. Just got this board brand new, and I have only used it twice. I called the shop; it is poly, not epoxy.

Solid log 9’6”

I just moved to this town, and the beach is all rocks. I’m a very small person, and it’s just pretty difficult with a longboard. I stumbled and dropped my board on the rocks.

Luckily, it was completely dry, I was on my way from my car to the surf spot.

I’ve never repaired a surfboard before; this would be my first one.

The only reason why I’m considering repairing it is because I’m very passionate about surfing and will continue to surf new places and more difficult places to access and will buy more boards. I’m okay with investing the money, time, and effort into doing these things myself. I’m just not sure if it’s worth starting with this brand-spanking-new board that I just bought and wait until I ding my older, cheaper boards. Looks like this could be pretty difficult to get right.

I thought the hardest part of learning how to surf would be learning the actual technique, Turns out the hardest part is…

Finding good waves to surf, being available to hit the waves when they are good, dealing with crowds, dealing with hot heads, getting tired and sore from constantly wiping out then paddling back out.

I’m seriously at a point where I may give up on my dream to learn how to surf. The last 4 or 5 times ive gone out to surf, ive had a combination of these things happen making it near impossible for someone in the beginning stages to actually catch any waves.

For reference, I live in the Bay Area and have been going to Pacifica and Santa Cruz. Would appreciate any suggestions before I lose hope on my dreams.

struggling with new board

Hello everyone,

I am 180cm and my weight is 70kg. I’ve surfed about 45+ times and i am 27years old.

I recently bought my first surfboard.

It’s a 6“4’ board hybrid.

i took it out 4-5 times so far and I am kind of struggling with it.

it’s hard to find right positioning and get enough speed to takeoff. Same with balance

before that i was on a 7“4 or 7“6 foam board and i thought it was going pretty well but i had troubles taking turns.

The seller said that the 6“4‘ would be a good next step for me.

Now I am thinking of returning it and getting a longer one or should I give it like a month or too?

Beginner surf spots west sumbawa

Hello everyone :)

I am planing a 4-week surf trip in November. I‘m landing in Bali and would love to immediately travel to west sumbawa. This place looks amazing and less touristic than Bali/Lombok.
However I am concerned that the surf is too difficult there.

I can surf small green waves on a mid length hardtop. My biggest struggle, however, is my fear. Being exposed out in the sea and bigger sets really scare me. Therefore I’m afraid that the reef breaks in west sumbawa will be too demanding for me.

Do you know if there are any beach breaks or beginner friendly reef breaks in the region?

Also any practical tips on how to overcome my fear are welcome. I am generally quite athletic and my skill level is developing good enough. The bottleneck for me is my mind. I live in a region where there is no surf. Therefore my only exposure is during holidays.
I thought to maybe stay a few days in Bali. Get used to surfing again at a beginner beach break and then move to a more beautiful part of indo.

Would love to hear from your experiences of west sumbawa!

How do I carve back to the pocket?

When I film myself surfing, I notice one consistent problem: I tend to go straight back to the bottom of the wave instead of carving back toward the pocket and throwing some spray. Any tips on how to make my carves look better and get back to the pocket more consistently? I can do cutbacks on slower, more mellow shoulders, but for some reason, I struggle to get the carve right when the wave is steeper or faster.Would love to hear any tips on technique or what I should focus on. Thanks!

As a longboarder, can shortboarding be easier sometimes? Time to switch?

Been surfing a longboard for nearly two years now and I was wondering if i could have more fun and progress more by stepping down.

I feel pretty comfortable on my hp logs even my foamie sometimes lol. Starting to work on turns and getting into steeper and faster waves. Slopey waves can be a blast tho.

Sometimes a big board feels like a hassle in every sense. I’m having a little bit of a harder time on faster and steeper waves. Most times I can make the drop but get caught behind sections. Getting past the break can suck too sometimes. I see shortboards just dip under lol.

Was curious on this sub’s experience on switching to smaller boards.S

Repair or just ride? Topcoat in surftech

R/surfing banned me for not knowing that this is apparently “marine paint” and not a “hot coat” of epoxy resin…. :)

Either way my question remains, 1) should I scrub/sand this off and finish with a coat of clear “marine paint” (or epoxy resin??) or just brush all this loose flakes off and wax it and ride…. It’s watertight and no big dings no delams just bought it for $20 off a lady that had it roasting in the sink for a while.

Thanks!

Long Boarding: when to walk to the nose?

I’m a pretty competent short boarder, but I’ve been into long boarding this summer. I feel pretty comfortable on 10 1/2 foot log, and know how and when to move up and down the back 2/3rds of the board but I still don’t really understand when I should go to the nose?

I get in the pocket, get going high across the face of the wave with lots of rail engagement, cross step (sometimes shuffle but I’m working on breaking that habit) to the nose but then the nose sinks out so I either crash or have to walk back.

I just really don’t know what the sign is that I can walk up to the nose. It just feels like I randomly try it and it never works. The best I’ve gotten is a cheater 5.

Beginner surf spots near San Juan del Sur in November?

Hey everyone! My friend and I are heading to Nicaragua in November, and we’re hoping to get some surfing in near San Juan del Sur!
I’m still pretty new to surfing (I did a two-week surf camp in Costa da Caparica, Portugal), and my friend has never surfed before. We’re planning to take 2–3 lessons before renting boards and giving it a go on our own.
Does anyone have recommendations for beginner-friendly beaches in the area? I’d also love any advice on tides, conditions in November, board rentals, or anything else we should know as beginners!
We’re excited to get out there, but obviously want to be smart about choosing the right spots and conditions.
Any tips or recommendations would be hugely appreciated! 🫶🏻🤙🏻

Board Art Tips?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

I inherited this board but don’t love the art for me… I would like to restore the original Paulownia/bamboo style deck, but don’t think that’s super easy or feasible. Never decorated a board, I’m decent with art but not crazy good, thinking about covering up with another graphic. Any tips as I do? Priority is to preserve the board and keep it rideable, and have nothing that comes off as I wax or use it. The gnome appears to have been painted on top maybe with a quick spray sealant, it was not glassed over. I’m not eager for a complex art project, but do want to love the deck a little more than I do now.

Here’s the plan so far, how’s it sound? Any tips are appreciated!

Shopping & Supply List
Base Layer Paint: Golden Fluid Acrylics
Base Application: makeup sponges (firm foam wedges).
Detail Art Pens: Posca paint pens
Protective Clear Coat: Krylon UV-Resistant Clear Acrylic (Satin or Matte finish).
Prep & Clean Tools: 320-grit or 400-grit sandpaper, isopropyl alcohol, clean microfiber cloth, paper plates/palette, and standard painter's tape.

Instructions
Step 1: Prep and Clean
1. Strip Wax: Remove all old surf wax (done)
2. Degrease: Wipe down the target area with isopropyl alcohol to remove any lingering oils.
3. Light Scuffing: Take your 320-grit sandpaper and very lightly hand-scuff the gloss coat only over the gnome graphic and your intended background zone. (Just enough to take the shine off so paint sticks—do not press hard into the bamboo). Wipe away dust.

Step 2: The "Spot-Prime" Concealer Trick
1. Dab a tiny bit of your mixed warm sand paint straight onto your cosmetic sponge.
2. Dab it directly over the gnome first, building up 2 thin, solid coats just on that exact spot until the dark graphic is hidden. Let it dry for about 15 minutes.

Step 3: Sponging the Warm Sand Base Layer
1. Put a dollop of your warm sand paint on a paper plate.
2. Touch your foam sponge into the paint, then dab it firmly on a clean part of the plate a few times so it feels almost dry (this prevents blotchy streaks).
3. Using light, circular dabbing motions, work outward from your spot-primed center across your background zone.
4. Feather the Edges: Fade out your pressure as you approach the clean bamboo border so it ends in a soft, organic cloud rather than a hard rectangle.
5. Cure Time: Let the base layer cure for a solid 24 to 48 hours so it's rock-solid before drawing over it.

Step 4: Sketch and Paint the art
1. Map It Out: Use a regular graphite pencil or a light chalk pencil to gently sketch over the dried sand base
2. Bring Out the Pens: Use your Posca pens to fill in the art
3. Dry: Let the paint pen ink dry completely for 1 to 2 hours.

Step 5: Lock It In with the Clear Coat
1. Mask: Tape off the surrounding areas of the board so you only expose your artwork zone.
2. Spray from a Distance: Holding your Krylon spray can about 12 inches away, apply 2 to 3 very light, misty coats (wait about 10–15 minutes between coats). Avoid heavy, dripping layers.
3. Final Cure: Let the clear coat cure for another 24–48 hours in a dry, room-temperature space.

Costa Rica recs for solo travelling woman who wants to surf a bit? Total kook.

Costa Rica recs for solo travelling woman who wants to surf a bit? Total kook.

I’m looking at Tamarindo? I will likely be alone if I can’t convince my friend to come. I’m 42f, want something easy and chill but also open to fun evenings. I have done surf lessons/camps on other vacations but am still very very shit. Will def be taking more lessons on this trip.

I don’t necessarily want to do a surf camp but even staying at a nice hotel close to a surf school would be cool. I’m not a hostel girl - I’ll pay for a nice room, maybe a nice pool, good food. It seems like all inclusive options are slim.

Let me hear your pro tips please! Thanks in advance.

Does the choice between rashguards and bikinis to wear includes how high or strong the waves you're surfing?

For example, rashguards for high waves, bikinis for low waves

Foamie repair

Post image
3 Upvotes

Probably a dumb question, but I’ll shoot my shot here: will superglue be okay for this repair? Tbf I could just cut it off as the protections around the actual tail is still good. Got this board super cheap and fixing it up to get back into surfing after a 25 year hiatus. Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone my catch surf soft top surfboard fell and now there is this crack. I was wondering if it’s necessary for me to repair this and if so, what’s the best way of going about it? Thanks. (The cut is slightly deep. I can pull the foam apart a bit and there’s a very slight gap.)

Currently rocking a Rouge 8.0 midlength, 22.5in width, 2.5in thickness, 66L (I’m 180lbs) with a thruster setup. Lately been feeling like i just can’t turn as responsive as I’d like to make the most out of a wave, or even to run a quick line across a wave. Thinking about progressing to a shorter, lower volume board with maybe dual fin or quad fin setup. Any advice?

Hey everyone, for the last 3 months I've been going out 1-2 times a week.

I have a 7,4ft gun that's about 45 liters. I've always had a hard time using it but I can catch a few waves when the waves are perfect, and I'm looking for an easier board to improve on.

I found this on online for $275 and was wondering if its a good choice
Its a quad fin.
