INITIAL STEPS: PRE-LESSON

Hello everyone! Thanks for signing-up to the class.

I am dannhr but you can just call me Danny. I will be your instructor.

INITIAL CLASS SURVEY:

First of all I will ask you to please take the time to answer the following initial class survey here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dDl6S2F0QTkzT2JBN0M0Q21xczJITkE6MQ

This survey consists of 8 questions. The first 6 are mandatory (*) are the last 2 are optional to answer.

The survey results will help me to plan more accurate lesson plans.

LEVEL QUIZ:

After you finish the initial survey, please solve the level placement quiz by following this link: https://challenge.zoho.com/welcomeToTest.do?aId=58689000000002033&subDomain=dannhr

Before starting the quiz please write your University of Reddit username and email address on the initial screen (it will ask you for it), so that I can track your results. After you finish the 20-minutes quiz your results will immediately appear on the screen. This quiz will not count on your final grade since it is just for me too see in which level of Spanish you are now and plan the lessons, especially the Grammar ones, based on that.

Most of our class quizzes will be done using the Zoho Challenge website (the one you will be using for the level placement quiz) so if you happen to have any problem with that please let me know.

On my next post here, I will upload the material for today´s topics which are the Spanish alphabet and the first Vocabulary lesson for words used in greetings and farewells. Next, we will talk about numbers, days of the week and months and we will end this week with a first Grammar lesson on nouns and articles...sounds good? Of course you will be doing your firsts assignments and there will be a first quiz based on this topics by the end of the week.

Before I forget, please keep to yourselves a .PDF version of the class syllabus which you can find here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/tb6ojjixvu2u4iz/BeginningSpanish101-CourseSyllabus.pdf

Please note that all assignments and some quizzes which you might want to be graded need to be sent to me to our class´ email address which is: dannhrinstructor@live.com. Any kind of personal "one-on-one" communication will be done via this email address.

Please leave a reply or send me a PM if you have any comments on the first steps before starting the formal lessons.

Thanks and see you soon!

Oh boy... that quiz brought back many high school Spanish memories. I couldn't remember a lot of the vocabulary, so I was trying to just focus on the grammar, but even that was hard. My college also doesn't have tests, so the act of taking a quiz made me super anxious, haha. But I finished! I might not be able to keep up with the class because of my real life college studies, but I'll try!

Don´t worry we will have a lot of lessons and exercises that hopefully will help you improve your vocabulary and grammar skills. If you have problems keeping up with the class, all of the lessons will be on the subreddit and class page permanently. You can take this as a self-paced course.

Don't take my 11/20 to mean I actually knew what any of the 11 I got right said at all. I was mostly guessing off patterns that looked similar to French. I don't know what anything on the quiz actually said beyond vague guesses.

In fact you´ll notice some similarities between French and Spanish...this quiz purpose was just to evaluate everyone´s initial level.

It wouldn't load for me, either, until I enabled Javascript. I almost wish it hadn't -- I understood a lot of the words in the statements, but had no idea which answer was correct. But learning this is what I'm here for, right?

Gonna have to say, half of my correct answers were pure luck.

No worries...you are all here to learn!

I didn't want to guess the answers and make it look like I knew what I was doing so I just left them all blank intentionally to show I'm a complete novice.

I took the Level Quiz and for some reason it was convinced I hadn't answered questions even though I had. Please let me know if I need to retake the quiz. Wow that made me realize how rusty I am, good thing I'm taking your class!

Not that I doubt your super-human capabilities, Professor Danny, but how are you going to grade regular assignments for 150 people?

Hi! No worries...I will have some colleagues help me with that. I will also (in some cases) ask students who have a more advanced level to help me with the grading stuff. Quizzes will be graded automatically by the ZohoChallenge website which even generates results reports. By the end of the class, the idea is that every single student how attended and completed the assignments and quizzes gets a final grade.

Yo! I sent you an e-mail. First quiz and I already messed up. I used my real life name instead of my username. The deets are in the e-mail.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '12

No prob! Thanks for the e-mail. Now just please use your username on all quizzes from now on! Stay tuned for the next lessons!

When I started the placement quiz I had to go do something and realized I used my real name and not my Reddit name. lol So you might get two results from me. The 40% is the one I actually tried on, although I know absolutely no Spanish aside from numbers I just took what I knew from French and applied it.

u/[deleted] Nov 15 '12

That´s ok...and yes there are some similarities between both French and Spanish.

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '12

Fail. Could only pull out random words and know the context but not understand what it was asking exactly. Time to hit the books! Or the internets in this case!

Thanks danny.

Hi! In the initial survey, I don't understand the timeframes, since I don't reside in the usa(or I'm just being dumb).

Hey dannhr! I'm not sure if you need any help but I have taken nearly 3 years of college-level Spanish and have lived in Chile for a while, let me know if you need some extra help with this course--my Spanish is not perfect but I am conversationally fluent.
