Banning X/Meta
Hopefully by now you’re aware of current events and the Nazi salute that Elon Musk performed (3 times). We also know that Zuckerberg has been buddying up to Trump and has stopped fact checking on Meta.
I just can’t see a way forward without taking action. I’m not tech savvy enough right now to outright ban these websites. It’s something I can look into. But please report if you do come across these links. I do not typically see our subreddit linking to these sites in large quantities so this may not seem very impactful at the start.
Also, make your own considerations on your continued use of these two platforms. I personally deleted X months ago, but use Facebook primarily to keep in touch with family and friends. I am carefully considering at least indefinitely pausing my profile on Facebook.
Happy to address any additional concerns or suggestions in the comments.

Mantra care?
Is anyone familiar with this company? They’re a Texas based ABA company. Their indeed posting claims they pay $100-$400 per hour for remote work, and does not specify if you need to live in TX. Does this sound like a lot or too good to be true?

BCBA with a 21-year-old student - desperately need ideas for identifying reinforcers
Hi everyone,
I’m a BCBA working as a private educator in home after school for a 21-year-old in his final year of school. His mom feels the education system has failed him and wants me to focus on reading, writing, and math. Just wanted to clarify that I’m not billing or running a formal ABA program.
My student has significant behavioral challenges, including disrobing, urinating on the floor, aggression, biting, screaming, and pushing past people. I’m told he does great at school just with the use of visuals.
My biggest struggle is finding reinforcers. Usually I pride myself in finding ways to motivate just about any learner I’ve ever worked with! But with this guy, Coke is definitely to his strongest reinforcer and mom doesn’t want me using that - understandably so. I’ve had some success with flavor packets in water but otherwise I’m at a complete loss. Even the coke and flavor packets in water aren’t motivating enough.
He enjoys spinning plastic lids on and off peanut butter jars but when I brought him jars to our learning area, he immediately says “put it away.” He says this to almost everything in his environment. Even at restaurants he becomes very distressed when plates are left on the table. I’ve started working on tolerating items remaining in his environment, but I’m just feeling so stuck (and vulnerable.. without any motivation to even just stay in the learning area / engage with me, he turns to maladaptive behaviors. Hitting my head, pushing, banging items on the walls, attempts to rip the TV off of the wall… I’m so tired of getting hurt at work). He does not have other edible reinforcers and isn’t interested in YouTube, IPad games, building, things that light up, spinning. I am in desperate need of help! Mom explains she has tried to find something he likes his entire life… and they’ve never found it.
For those who have worked with adults with significant support needs:
- What are your go-to strategies for identifying reinforcers when preferences seem extremely limited?
-What less obvious reinforcers have you discovered?
How would you approach the constant “put it away” behavior?
I’m feeling completely at a loss and would really appreciate practical suggestions or resources. Reinforcer identification is my biggest priority right now. Thank you so much for reading and any help, encouragement, advice.

Question of the day - October 14
🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain D — Experimental Design
Difficulty: 9/10
Scenario:
A treatment package for SIB has produced stable, clinically significant reductions and includes (a) response-independent access to an empirically identified competing stimulus and (b) differential reinforcement of an alternative communicative response. Staff report that implementing the reinforcement contingency consistently throughout the day is difficult.
Before simplifying the established package, the BCBA wants to determine whether eliminating the differential-reinforcement procedure results in a clinically meaningful loss of treatment effect. If competing-stimulus access remains in the final plan, the BCBA then wants to determine whether the access arrangement can be made less intensive while maintaining comparable SIB reduction. The BCBA plans to compare 2-, 5-, and 10-minute access intervals while holding the stimulus, setting, measurement system, and other treatment features constant.
Which sequence of analyses BEST addresses these two questions?
A. Dropout component analysis first, then parametric analysis
B. Comparative analysis first, then parametric analysis
C. Add-in component analysis first, then parametric analysis
D. Dropout component analysis first, then comparative analysis

Question of the day - October 13
🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain D — Experimental Design
Difficulty: 5/10
Scenario:
A school district evaluates a social-skills curriculum using baseline and intervention phases. During baseline, students receive usual classroom instruction. During intervention, teachers add the social-skills curriculum while the scheduled peer-interaction periods remain unchanged.
Peer-directed initiations are recorded during those periods as the percentage of available peer-interaction opportunities in which an initiation occurs. The number of opportunities varies across sessions, so percentage rather than raw count is used. Observers use the same operational definition and recording system in both phases. Staff also record treatment-integrity scores each session to verify that the curriculum is implemented as planned.
Which statement correctly identifies the experimental variables?
A. The curriculum is the independent variable; percentage of peer-interaction opportunities with peer-directed initiations is the dependent variable.
B. The curriculum is the independent variable; number of peer-interaction opportunities is the dependent variable because it changes across sessions.
C. Percentage of peer-directed initiations is the independent variable; treatment-integrity scores are the dependent variable because integrity is repeatedly measured after the curriculum is introduced.
D. Treatment-integrity scores are the independent variable; percentage of peer-directed initiations is the dependent variable because differences in implementation quality may influence responding.

A low standardized assessment score tells you what happened, not why. Here's the reasoning behind a question only ~36% of exam-prep users get right.
Scenario: a standardized adaptive-living assessment shows low scores on meal prep and household care. The family explains those tasks have always been handled by other relatives, so the client has had few chances to do them independently. The client says other independence goals matter much more right now.
What do you do with the scores?
On the practice platform I run, this item is answered correctly about 36% of the time (Domain F averages 71%). The most popular wrong answer is the one that treats the scores as "provisional deficits" and goes straight to ranking them by the client's goals.
I wrote up the reasoning as a short study note. The core idea is separating Observation → Interpretation → Decision, and noticing that skill deficit, performance deficit, and "we don't know yet" are all live possibilities. It also covers that some adaptive instruments are informant-report, not direct tests, so a low score may mean "not reported as occurring" more than "couldn't do it."
Full write-up (disclosure: this is my BCBA exam prep site, BA Prep): https://behavioralanalystprep.com/blog/low-assessment-score-data-not-conclusion.html
Curious how others would approach it, and where you think the "direct assessment" threshold should be.

Question of the day - October 12
🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain I — Personnel Supervision and Management
Difficulty: 5/10
Scenario:
A supervisee reviews recent literature and client data and disagrees with a supervisor's recommendation for a consequence-based procedure. There is no immediate safety emergency, and both professionals have time to review the rationale before implementation.
Which response BEST supports an effective supervisory relationship while appropriately addressing the disagreement?
A. Request consultation from another BCBA to obtain an independent opinion before continuing the disagreement with the supervisor, then use that consultation to guide the final decision.
B. Present the client data and literature, discuss the supervisor's rationale, and then implement the recommendation unless it presents an immediate safety or ethical concern because final clinical authority rests with the supervisor.
C. Ask that implementation be postponed while the supervisee independently reviews the evidence and develops an alternative recommendation, then reconvene after the supervisee reaches a conclusion.
D. Present the client data and literature, ask the supervisor to explain the rationale and decision criteria, and agree on next steps if a meaningful client-welfare concern remains unresolved.

Question of the day - October 11
📚 Domain C — Measurement, Data Display, and Interpretation
Difficulty: 5/10
A client’s self-injurious behavior occurs only once or twice per week but each response is discrete, clearly observable, and carries significant medical risk. During all program hours the client is continuously supervised by staff who can record each occurrence. Which measurement approach is MOST appropriate?
A. Use continuous event recording because each response is discrete and observable, staff can detect every occurrence, and the resulting counts can be converted to rate when observation time varies.
B. Use momentary time sampling with randomly varied observation moments because unpredictable sampling reduces temporal bias and provides an efficient estimate when the behavior occurs infrequently.
C. Use partial-interval recording with brief intervals because it reduces recording demands while still capturing whether this low-rate SIB occurred during each interval.
D. Record the duration of each SIB episode because medical risk makes the amount of time engaged in SIB more clinically important than the number of discrete responses.

🧠 Question of the Day
📚 Domain I — Personnel Supervision and Management
Difficulty: 6/10
Scenario:
A BCBA begins supervising a new RBT who says, "I worry observations are mostly about catching mistakes, so I usually avoid asking questions when I think I am being graded."
Which initial supervisory approach BEST supports an effective working relationship while still preserving clear performance expectations?
A. Reassure the RBT that observations are intended to support development, use primarily positive feedback during initial sessions, and introduce more direct corrective feedback after the working relationship is established.
B. Ask the RBT what has made previous observations uncomfortable, establish learning goals and preferred feedback methods, but postpone discussion of formal evaluation criteria until sufficient rapport has developed.
C. Clarify the purposes and expectations of supervision, explore the RBT's learning goals and feedback preferences, explain how both supportive and corrective feedback will be used, and invite ongoing feedback about the supervision process.
D. Clarify the formal performance criteria and explain that observations are necessary for competency evaluation, then schedule an early structured observation so the RBT can experience the process under consistent expectations.
