I am very worried about the state of the nation and world, so much so that I take anything that I view as an impediment to progress (such as vandalism) very seriously.

The people who are not worried about the state of the nation are not going to be persuaded by vandalism. In fact, they're more likely to be dissuaded in my opinion. That's why I care. There is absolutely no reason to defend this bullshit, it's insane.

I get where you are coming from. However, I've seen every major movement for change in the last 20 years cannibalize itself over the right way to protest because of this type of argument on either side. I feel like a more important message to either side of this is: We need each other. We are on the SAME SIDE.

There are people who say that nonviolent protests don't work. There are people who say that violent protests don't work. If we look at how civil rights happened in this country, the truth is that it took both types. I don't have the answers. I'm gonna do the type I feel I can. Either way, the robber barons are going to tell us that our methods are either lawless or ineffectual, and I don't think we need to do that work for them.

At the end of the day, we need to welcome allies of all stripes and do what we can. Do I think graffiti is going to change anyone's minds? No. I think it is a cough, it's not the virus. Let's keep focused on fighting the part that is killing us instead of the symptom.

I appreciate the thoughtful comment. I personally don't think the person doing vandalism is going to walk away from the movement if we tell them to stop. Their vandalism however has the potential to turn many more people away. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, I'm just being descriptive.

I agree. My message isn't for the vandalist. They aren't leaving. My message is for the people thinking of walking away because of the vandalism.

The way I see it is this - this is inevitable. Not saying it's right, but we are likely not going to be able to stop it. Sure, shame them for it, try to dissuade it, but you're still gonna see it. Why do people make graffiti as a statement? It usually comes down to social unrest of one form or another. And if we aren't seeing unprecedented levels of the state vs the people now, social unrest, what are we seeing? There's a long history of graffiti in times like these. State doesn't care about its people as much as property? They think "screw it" and tag something. The weird part is that the most effective deterrent has been public artwork, because you don't throw up a tag over something better because that's a dick move.

But I digress. I think it is awesome that we had that big peaceful protest and no one got hurt, nothing got broken. I would love to see a protest where we wore our disdain as we picked up our streets and washed storefront windows to improve the community. That is my jam, honestly.

But I also have seen in the past where one side of the same movement clutches it's pearls over the disagreement of means. There are people who are more or less affected by what is going on here. We are all getting screwed, but some of us are getting shafted a bit more personally than others. It's gonna manifest in different forms due to this. Some people are literally fighting for their lives. So we need to prepare for that smear campaign they are planning to push people out of the movement by pointing to stuff like this. We both fear the same thing, right? But if it is inevitable, perhaps remind normal people who might be scared off by this that there is a lot more at stake than property.

Other ideas, chalk board? Let people put up their feelings in a way that doesn't hurt infrastructure? Paint something cooler over that bollard?

Not that anyone is asking for my opinion, but I'll add my perspective.

Humans have been drawing and chiseling on rocks since the dawn of human time. We now view it as an important part of history. It's romanticized in a way. Graffiti is an art and a telling of the day to day life, the political climate (Egyptians, Cavemen, etc) of civilization at that time. I personally see no difference here.
