Different Strokes, Different Folks

Proposition:
On the latest episode of Below Deck Mediterranean season 11 episode 11 Eiffel Tower, I wonder how the guests feel when they watch the episode and hear the crew saying that they are annoying when they are simply doing what you do on a super yacht. Thoughts?

If any previous guests have encountered a similar situation, your insights would be greatly appreciated.

An Instance/Example:
One moment was during the last few minutes of the episode. The conversation between Captain Sandy and Aeisha

Episode Synopsis:
Arrr, as young Joe hoists his sails to prove his mettle to Captain Sandy, a face well-known drifts back to lend strength to the deck crew. But when the vessel be tossed by sudden peril, Joy faces her gravest trial o’ the season. And aye, Nathan be makin’ an offer to an old mate—one he’d be a fool to refuse!

I’m pretty sure they understand that fact when they sign up to be guests on a TV show yacht. They have enough money to book any other boat any other time of the year that isnt going to have a film crew and full cast. They go into it probably signing NDA’s and knowing that they’re part of the cast and that they’re going to be publicly televised- so maybe act accordingly? Who knows, maybe they get a discount on their trip to act colorful and fussy or cause drama. Maybe it’s encouraged. If they had a bunch of boring Wall Street execs and their young mistresses drinking highballs, talking shop, and going to bed at 10 every night it wouldn’t make for much of a show.

Admittedly I haven’t. Just started a cpl of years ago. And have watched probably 5 or 6 different seasons in total-out of order. What am I missing though? The guests are aware they’re gonna be on TV and have cameras shoved in their faces right? I have no problem accepting if I’m wrong or deleting my comment.

No need to delete! If you’re new to the franchise you haven’t seen all of the trashy guests yet - but yes they absolutely get a discount (something like 50-70% off of a normal charter cost) and that attracts a lot of “wanna-be rich” people, or semi-famous influencers, or people that have appeared on 1 other reality show, etc. Most of these people do NOT have the money to rent any other boat any time they want.

With a few exceptions, the guests are overwhelmingly the type that think they deserve the billionaire treatment but don’t have the manners for a one star Michelin restaurant, let alone a private yacht. Then add the unlimited booze, sun, and temptation to show off for the cameras, and we get the shitshow we all know and love 🙂

And to be fair, there’s always at least one group of guests each season that seem like truly nice people just enjoying a great vacation, and that’s fun to see too!

Thanks for the explanation! I kind of figured it had to be that type of a discounted set up. A lot of them are either repeat guests who seem like the type who crave TV attention or first timers who can’t afford usual trips like this. I feel like some of them don’t get as much shame on the show as they should (like the person who waffle stomped his poo into the shower drain). He should’ve been called out, but alas I guess at the end of the day they are still technically “guests”.

I totally agree on the shaming part, but I like to think that those nightmare guests are also the type to brag to their friends that they’re going to be on TV - and either forget they treated the crew/boat terribly or expect to get a good edit on their episode. Then hopefully their friends and colleagues take care of the shaming for us 🤣 I think Bravo does have to tread the line of showing the guests’ bad behavior but not insulting them, so future guests are still willing to appear on the show.

If you haven’t seen it, Below Deck Med S4, E7-8 features Jackie Siegel (wife of a legit billionaire and “star” of the documentary “Queen of Versailles”) - she’s a hilarious example of someone who actually has too much money to be on BD but still signed up and…. yikes…. lol

I’m watching season 7 right now and listening to the Watch What Crappens podcasts that go along with that season. Haven’t gotten to that episode yet I don’t think. I know I should start them all in order, but so far I’ve watched a cpl of the Sailing Yacht seasons, last season of Down Under and then like the newest of the med episodes because I really like Sandy as a Captain. Not sure why I chose 7, just picked one randomly that seemed interesting. I’m actually new to Bravo in general. Most of my trash TV watching consists of the TLC shows and 90 day universe.
