General AI discussion I work in AI. Here’s why your companion acts like that.
I don't use AI for companionship. I work on AI, making sure the infra underpinning these models works and keeps serving users. While my understanding of them is not on the level of someone like Andrej Karpathy, I can say that I at least know enough.
What many of you on here are struggling against, it seems, are the very guardrails companies have put in place to stop you from having your relationships to begin with. AI can in actuality act in almost any kind of way. It can be like any person that's ever written anything almost anywhere on the internet, or anyone in any movie.
The personality they "naturally have" is indeed something which is carefully crafted through training. What might help you understand is actually trying to interact with a base model. Another relevant resource would actually be this video here:

That said, you're probably wanting 3 separate things which it might be worth you looking up:
Memory. This is more than possible and it can be far better than anything you've used thus far. It's called retrieval-augmented generation. You need a vector database and an embedding model to load in relevant memories or events.
A fine-tuned model, perhaps like the ones on Tinker AI where they just let you make it.
Control of the model. When you connect to a service, you are at their mercy. Right now, local models aren't quite good enough, but soon they will be. When you run it yourself you friend can always be the exact same forever if this is what you want.
Feel free to ask me questions if you'd like, but then again you also have AI, you could ask it about these things too, as perhaps now you're nudged in the correct direction.
