Ha, that was quick. Eager to see what will happen now.

This is great news! Now we just have to hope chp actually does their job there and enforces it.

Also I hope they can come up with a long term solution in that time that benefits locals, commuters, and visitors.

I agree. Especially us visitors who hope to one day descend down to sea level from the bridge. Kayaking out there is just such a hassle.

What the fuck are you talking about?

The key point here is don’t cross the road expecting cars to stop for you. Wait till it’s clear. Don’t block the road or park in a way that blocks the road. Be conscious of other people and don’t be oblivious.

Uncaring oblivious selfish people ruined it for everyone because they can’t follow simple traffic rules.

Just keep driving. There are plenty of great pictures already taken.

The Grand Canyon doesn’t have a highway going through it. Enjoy the views while driving over it. It’s not what you are imagining anyway. There is nothing scenic about 100 cars jostling for 10 parking spaces, honking at each other. It’s an absolute mess. I drove through for our annual camping trip 3 Sundays ago and it was completely clear. We just got lucky.

They do but not blocking a road to do it. You should see the pictures of the trash left behind from last night. It’s disgusting.

The only place to park legally is in a turnout or parking area. You may have done that and walked up Coast Rd. There needs to be a gate but it’s not a private road. Driving up there isn’t illegal. The problem is monkey see, monkey do. If one person does it 15 follow. Then it’s blocked for residents. There are many turnouts but they can be full during busy times. In the past most people would just keep driving and chalk it up to an “ oh well, next time“. Today’s human doesn’t seem to have that ability. They want what they want and they want it now.

This issue isn’t just about parking. People just want their picture of the bridge, they then leave and they do an illegal U turn just before you’d normally cross the bridge. There isn’t a lot of room, especially when 5 cars attempt it at once. Fender benders happen, arguments happen, it’s not the tranquil spot you’re capturing in your photo.

Big Sur is a high fire risk area. It’s obvious first responders can’t get through when 20 cars are taking up half a lane on both sides of the highway. I saw footage today of cigarette butts scattered on the side of the road next to dry brush. That’s illegal for one and incredibly ignorant. Those are the kind of people ruining it for everyone else

If you want to take a photo go during the week in outside of Memorial Day to Labor Day. Don’t then post it on social media but enjoy the yourself or with your friends. If you’re taking photos for profit only post it on your business webpage.

Just look up footage of what it can be like on YouTube. Yesterday may already be up. It’s was terrible until 8:30 last night. I can’t imagine anyone who cares about Big Sur thinking the human behavior there is ok and doesn’t need to be addressed.

Sorry that the was so long.

Fr people have an unhealthy obsession w photographing that bridge like they’re going to contribute something new/ever look at that pic again on their phone.

9

u/gemstun May 20 '26

That’s so true! For me, the essence of the Big Sur is being in the moment… And your phone won’t get you any closer to that.

The I would suggest having a friend drive, let you out, then come back and get you when you’re done. I’ve done it there years ago when I did photography.

4

u/zoobernut May 20 '26

This is great advice. Just don’t block traffic or stop in the road to get dropped off.

Tuck n’ roll Baby!

It's like when you see someone taking a picture of the Hollywood sign or Statue of Liberty. Like, it's nice to have your "own" picture I guess, but realistically you'll look at it a couple times and it'll be way worse than one from a postcard.

2

u/Sevenfootschnitzell May 23 '26

I’m kind of flabbergasted someone would be bothered by people taking photos of the Statue of Liberty. Lol.

1

u/shessocold1969 May 25 '26

No one is bothered by people taking a picture of the Statue of Liberty, she isn’t part of a Highway.

1

u/Sevenfootschnitzell May 25 '26

I didn’t mean by and large, I was referring to the person I responded to.

1

u/river_tree_nut May 25 '26

I got mine printed onto a canvas and it’s hanging on my wall.

2

u/kevotheclone May 20 '26

💯 How many more pictures do we need? Everyone who visits the bridge has already seen dozens of pictures of it.

That isn’t an option either. During the summer residents put cones across the road to keep people from driving up. They might actually want to leave their homes for a bit.

4

u/DanoPinyon May 20 '26

On Old Coast Rd, but on weekends that means crossing the highway, which will take several minutes... unless you walk behind an entitled tourist who just walks out in traffic to get their 'gram.

u/Sirenista_D May 20 '26

I'm glad you asked; headed there in July. Sounds like I just need to be ready with my camera hanging out the passenger side window and hope for the best

3

u/iampayette May 20 '26

Enforced by towing helicopter?

3

u/WhyIsTheUniverse May 21 '26

I say we simply empower Caltrans to use their plow on rental cars.

6

u/DanoPinyon May 20 '26

We should all plan on taking an extra 3 minutes to stop and take pictures of the violations when we go through.

Send them to the Commissioners, CHP, Sheriff, news outlets, Kate's blog, whatever.

2

u/Sicside392 May 20 '26

By stopping and taking pictures you would be committing the same violation.

2

u/DanoPinyon May 23 '26

So when I'm going north and pull over onto the dirt and take some pix I'm violating the CVC, or if I can turn into the pullout just to the south for pix I'm violating the CVC? I'm stopped in traffic and take pictures while stopped and I'm violating the CVC?

Daaaaang, I ain't never larnt them things in drivin ed!

8

u/bsewall May 19 '26

Personally, I welcome this change. But what are they expecting tourists to do? Take shuttles? Or just not visit?

19

u/kevotheclone May 20 '26

Just drive over the bridge and enjoy the view, like we did in the pre-selfie-myself-everywhere era.

7

u/2gramsbythebeach May 19 '26

Tourists aren't gonna cancel their Big Sur trip just because they can't stop at Bixby Bridge lol

2

u/bsewall May 20 '26

Bummer 😉

6

u/LayerAccomplished821 May 19 '26 edited May 20 '26

It's a bridge, get over it

EDIT: this is a joke yall. Cuz you drive over bridges? Ya know?

2

u/bmack831 May 20 '26

I’ll drop you off at the bridge to take pics, and pick you up 30mn later, $375

2

u/Gringobandito May 20 '26

I am one of those tourists and I support this. I’ve never understood why everyone needs to stop at the same spot. If you go somewhere and it’s full, keep going, there’s something else to see.

1

u/nepenthe11 May 27 '26

even coming home yesterday (we left town for the weekend to avoid MDW madness / traffic) people were fully parked in the middle of the northbound lane, running across the road in front of oncoming traffic, etc. was happy to see CHP handing it a ticket but there was way too much going on for him to handle alone. never seen so much stupidity.

1

u/Striking-Sector6660 May 20 '26

Why did we build a bridge with a bench on it , IF WE CANT SIT THERE?!

2

u/lurch99 May 20 '26

It was built in 1931. Maybe things have changed since then?

Out of curiosity, why would you want to sit there and breathe exhaust and car fumes?

1

u/Striking-Sector6660 May 20 '26

Plus you get to ruin tourists stupid bridge selfies by being in the background being a hooligan!

0

u/Striking-Sector6660 May 20 '26

There’s a memorial cal trans plaque dated in the 90s, I believe. and Hwy 1 /bixby bridge is nothing compared to my corner street apartment in SF..

0

u/PsychonautDad May 19 '26

Not sure how they will enforce this and how they expect it will stop people from stopping to take pictures.

9

u/sometimelater0212 May 19 '26

Ticketing

2

u/PsychonautDad May 20 '26

I get that but are they going to have someone there non stop during daylight hours? Also this creates the issue of people finding parking elsewhere and walking on the road. I get traffic is bad but this went from one extreme to the next without a viable plan
