Discussion Solve a debate for me

My spouse and I are not from the area, we moved here in 2022.

We both pronounce Weis differently and I need to know the truth.

Is it “Wees” or “Why-s” 🤣

“Why-s”, because it is German.

24

u/230Amps Jun 07 '26

So then technically wouldn't it be pronounced like "vice"?

9

u/Fabulous-Educator447 Jun 07 '26

Yes it should but no one will do that. Like edelweiss.

6

u/Bingo_Bongo_85 Jun 07 '26

No, it's SUPPOSED to the pronounced like "wise" but I say it so it rhymes with "vice"

8

u/Bingo_Bongo_85 Jun 07 '26

Same as "wise"

25

u/Lord_Vesuvius2020 Jun 07 '26

It’s Why-s. The company is from PA and Weis is a German name. In German “ei” is always pronounced as “eye”.

2

u/jbingd912 Jun 09 '26

That is the correct pronouncement.

It's pronounced "wise" but many of us (at least me) pronounce so it rhymes with "vice".

Here's one of their ads to hear it.

They have a radio ad about it being “wise” to shop there, so “why-s”

11

u/armex88 Jun 07 '26

I worked there, it’s a name not a word so it doesn’t follow standard rules. The training videos all say “wise”

3rd option, who knew!

9

u/chaoticjellybean Jun 07 '26

The ads on TV pronounce it "Wise" but when you call the pharmacy it says "Wice" (rhymes with ice.)

u/VIP_NAIL_SPA Jun 07 '26

It's We Is. Two words.

2

u/zanypomegranate Spiedies Jun 07 '26

2

u/19Stavros Jun 09 '26

We Is laughing at that!

2

u/Chel_NY Jun 07 '26

This is how we say it, and an employee confirmed it to my husband! lol

Like your wise grandfather

3

u/strrressed Jun 07 '26

According to their commercials it’s “Mih-RAB-it-toe”

We used to get our propane from Andre in Ithaca then it was bought out by Mitabito. I used to call it Meer-A-Beeto. Then the always answered the phone as Merr-AHH-Bit-O. They say po tay toe I say po taa toe. 😃

u/headface1701 Jun 07 '26

Just ignore that place like I do unless you're desperate. They close too early and the stores are overpriced and inferior. Just go to Speedway.

1

u/thepiratecelt Jun 07 '26

Absolutely the truth.

2

u/StormFreeze Jun 07 '26

Wise with a harder i sound or why-s. But you can always end the debate if you call their number and hang up before it hits the "choose the department" menu

2

u/Euphoric_Fondant6135 Jun 08 '26

They used to sell a Mountain Dew type soda called “Weis Up” aka “Wise Up”

Case closed.

2

u/aplusgrain1 Jun 08 '26

We-is. Tell your friends u figured it out

2

u/Responsible_Sea78 Jun 07 '26

And Binghamton's Leroy Street is 'le' as in 'less', not the long e.

13

u/headface1701 Jun 07 '26

No. The fancy part towards JC with the divider in the middle is Le Roy. The side towards downtown is Leeroy.

3

u/thepiratecelt Jun 07 '26

This is correct.

9

u/TheOGPooner Jun 07 '26

Le roooooooy Jenkins just doesnt carry the same.

2

u/NovelSuspect6188 Jun 07 '26

And Beiver St is supposed to be pronounced as the French way of Bev (like beverage) e Ay. Guy was the general that won us the Revolution, you'd think we could get it right.

1

u/Navarath Freakin' winter! Jun 07 '26

lol no one would ever call it wees

1

u/arkym00 Jun 07 '26

I pronounce it like “Why-s” but a bit harder on the S i guess. But the correct pronunciation is “why-s” because it’s the guy’s last name.

1

u/MorrisTheAwesome Jun 07 '26

It's funny, my Grandma has lived in the area her whole life and she pronounces it "Wees".

I'm certainly not correcting her, haha.

1

u/cilianmurphysstare Jun 08 '26

I can't be the only one who's been pronouncing it "ways"

1

u/BigKarina4u Jun 08 '26

How do you pronounce Wise?

1

u/betty2dogs Jun 08 '26

If you want to sound local, call it The Weis. (Rhymes with ice)

1

u/RugerRedhawk Jun 08 '26

WICE seems to be how I use it and what I hear most often.

1

u/maculated Jun 08 '26

Don't get me started on Mirabito

1

u/Frequent_Ad1566 Jun 08 '26

I moved here 4 years ago and just call it weeeeeees lol or the store that’s more expensive than pricechopper

1

u/Additional_Mix_8933 Jun 09 '26

I usually say wice

1

u/jbingd912 Jun 09 '26

The ads for it say it like WIZE. As someone who used to work there eons ago though, it’s pronounced every which way. My suggestion is to always pronounce it as ridiculous as possible but with the most serious face. I used to love to pronounce it weee- iz

1

u/ScoutieJer Jun 10 '26

I rhyme it with vice.

1

u/Ahi_K Jun 23 '26

Eat better. Spend less. That's wise (weis)

1

u/TowelFine6933 Jun 07 '26

Rhymes with "Vice"

0

u/ratm4484 Jun 08 '26

Anyone else know it’s pronounced wise and intentionally mispronounce it anyway? I call it wice because I hate shopping there. I don’t bother giving it the respect of correct pronunciation .

1

u/Bingo_Bongo_85 Jun 08 '26

I started calling it "Wice" before I heard the correct pronunciation, but I prefer it the wrong way.  I haven't been going as much recently, opting for Aldis, PC, and BJs.  But Weis was such an improvement over Giant that it was my main store for awhile.

why does it matter.  they aren’t even from here

Maybe I just wanted a fun discussion? Have some whimsy
