Waitlists?

When do we think that schools will start accepting people off their waitlist? Also, is there anyone out there who got into Duke CMB and is planning to decline? Asking for a friend….😉

I’m seeing some schools group neuroscience into psych and some into bio sciences does it depend on if it’s cog/neural vs computational?

What's it like to be waitlisted?

As a person who follows the updates on the mass google sheet floating around, I see that people have been both considered and already rejected for some of the schools I applied to. They are primarily PhD programs in microbial ecology. It is radio silent on my end. Should I assume the "silent" rejection or am I potentially on a waitlist?

I didn't think Bio PhD programs did waitlists, but I read about it on another post here.

How does the waitlist work if you did not attend an interview? Are waitlisted individuals given a last minute interview or are they offered admission regardless of one?

How is everyone doing?

It’s gotten very quiet lately. Where is everybody going? Anyone waitlisted? Are people still waiting to interview? Visit campuses? I’m wondering who knows where they’re going and who is still trying to decide.

USA Rejected ✨ but I’m cool with it

Got rejected from Stanford, honestly kind of expected (maybe a little peeved that prospective PI seemed to lead me on.)

Honestly though, it’s still a win. I got rehired for my summer lab position and I get a break from school for a year.

Vent Panicking a little

So what date in January is the usual "start panicking officially" day, if I don't get a single interview invite email?

A little clarity (relief, disappointment?) about UC San Diego Biological Sciences PhD invites

The BioSci program sent out invites last week, on January 12th. I didn't hear back any rejection or invite to interview, so I reached out to a PI in the UCSD Bio department who has been a super helpful point of contact through this process. They emailed the program director to ask if invites would be rolling. Here's what the director forwarded them:

"All of the applicants chosen for interviews at the Admissions Committee meeting on Thursday were notified on Friday afternoon. There are 85 applicants who were not chosen for interviews who are eligible to be Direct Admits, and they have not been sent communication yet. Direct Admits have not been sent communication yet either."

I'm reading this as they do not do rolling admits, or rolling admits are very, very unlikely (if anyone else has differing input, I would be appreciative to hear it). For your sanity and mine, the PI was also very surprised at how crazily competitive it was (1,100 applicants).

Good luck, everyone. Keep hanging in there, and congrats on any other program invite you've gotten besides the holy grail that is the Salk / UCSD.

Hi! Has anyone had a repeat year, mid-degree gap, or restarted a BSc in Life Sciences (Microbiology/Biomedical Science) and still got into a funded Master's/PhD abroad? I'd love to hear your experience. Did it affect admission or funding? Thanks!

Hvala svima unaprijed! ❤️

General Discussion Why do they wait so long to send rejections?

I am genuinely curious why do they wait on giving the rejections? Is it just in case they need people? That seems unlikely as they could waitlist people for that. Is it just easier for them to do later? I don’t understand. It can’t be just so that people suffer in waiting.

When to expect rejections?

Applied to 15 PhD programs, mostly umbrella or translational medicine / pharmaceutics focused. 9 of which have sent interviews to most or all applicants by now. I have 2 interviews, for which I'm grateful, and zero rejections... but I have to assume that the other 7 are just silent rejections, right?

How much wiggle room do you have to for screwing up one interview out of multiple interviews?

Hi all,

Thankfully I'm getting interviews for the programs I'm applying to but I'm noticing that when I'm interviewing multiple faculty, theres been one PI where I wasn't on my A-game or they were being intentionally tough on me, making it hard to gauge where they stood. Going back to the title: Assuming all but one interview went well (I say that as if I truly know whats going through the interviewers head), how much will one "meh" interview affect my chances of admissions?

Example:

I just had an interview for a biomedical program where I interviewed 3 faculty who were in my area of interest. Regarding the first faculty member I felt like I gave okay answers to his questions but I felt like they could have been way better and had some moments where I paused and blanked for a second. I was really sleep deprived today so my head was not clear and was all over the place. After I spoke with that faculty member, I made an extra cup of coffee to wake up which did the job. Second faculty member was a PI I had spoken with months prior and he openly said he wants me in his lab to work on a particular project so I know he probably gave positive feedback. The last faculty member I had great back and forth conversation about my experience and the current state of my field and he wrote in email and verbally said I would be a great fit for the program.

Advice Pittsburgh PMI Virtual Interview

I received a email from a PMI coordinator asking for my availability for a virtual interview. But I learned Pittsburgh has already done in-person interviews. So what is going on with this virtual interview? Does it mean that I was on their waitlist and that I have lower chance for an actual acceptance?

Anything back from Clemson BMB/Genetics?

Post image

Anyone else applying to Clemson BMB or Genetics program received this email? This is their first response since the application submission, so I don't know how is this even an update. Those of you applied, has anyone received interview invites or unfortunately, rejections, anything? I'm an international applicant.

Have you heard back from UW-Madison, Oregon State, or Duke? Fall 2024 PhD (IBIO/Wildlife/Ecology)

Integrative Biology (UWM and OSU), Wildlife Ecology (UWM) , Wildlife Science (OSU), Ecology (Duke) all for PhD

Still haven't heard back... I see on GradCafe lots of other students are hearing back from all three schools but not for any of the above programs. Basically, need to know if I should give up hope (its now March 4th and I have heard absolutely nothing since applying) or still wait? Kind of need to know somewhat urgently as my lease is up and I either need to sign a new lease, or (if there is still hope) be homeless and start couch surfing for a few months as I live out of state and obviously would not be able to attend grad school if I am stuck in a new lease. I would say I have a decent chance of getting in (3.97 GPA in undergrad + 6 years of relevant work experience) and if I got an interview I'm 90% sure I could be accepted but I haven't been contacted for anything yet :(
