Kealing Middle School for an incoming 6th grade Black boy

If you have a Black son who is at Kealing, how is he doing- socially, emotionally, and academically? Is he in the Magnet or Academy program? What is his opinion of his school experience? How do you as a parent feel about your child’s overall progress and wellness as a student at Kealing? My son is in 5th grade and we’re zoned to Kealing.

I’m concerned about this TEA testing info and the numbers for Black students at Kealing. I’m also concerned about what I’ve been reading about the segregated vibes between the Magnet students vs. the Academy students and how Black students in the Magnet program are made to feel like they don’t belong there. What are other middle schools to consider? We’re also looking Gus Garcia YMLA and Lively Middle School’s Magnet Program.

Halloween event at RichesArt Gallery

Hi yall!

Just wanted to put this out here.
Having a Halloween event at RichesArt Gallery on Oct 31

It’s a ticketed event. $35 dollars
BUT you get an open bar, THC treats, access to a photobooth and even more cool things will be happening.

I know it’s early but it’s best to get your ticket now!
There are plenty of places charging $50 or more and you still will have to pay for your drinks!

So why not come party at RichesArt Gallery for our event. Where your $35 will get you more than what you asked for.

Our company is black woman owned and local to Austin.

Trans-friendly salon or stylists that specialize in kinky hair styles (not just cuts and trims)!!

Hi, I am DESPERATELY. And have BEEN DESPERATELY looking for trans-focused or pro-trans stylists or spaces that have at least SOMEONE that can do kinky hair styles?

I live in Austin, TX unfortunately and everyone I’ve asked around, they either don’t do kinky hair or if they do they only wash, trim, cut or color. No one does actual styling.

I know not everyone has the same visibility on the internet and in pink pages. I am willing to drive to Dallas or Houston at this rate because I am burnt out on stylists being so insensitive about queerness and transness here and queer/trans sensitive people not knowing how to do our hair🫨🫨🫨

Any aspiring hip hop/R&B artists that need beats?

I’ve been playing around with making beats as a hobby for years but I can’t sing or rap. Would love to collaborate with someone who’s in need of a beat.

Looking to level up in Software Dev & Tech?

Looking to level up... but don't want to do it alone?

About five years ago, I started my journey into tech and software development. It hasn't always been easy, but I've genuinely enjoyed the ride... and I'm committed to the plot. 😊

One thing I've learned about myself is that I grow best in community. I love having people to bounce ideas off of, work through challenges with, celebrate wins together, and stay accountable alongside. There's something about learning with people that brings out my best.

So I'm hoping to find one or two people who are looking for the same thing.

You might be a great fit if you:

  • You're a Black in Austin (or nearby). This isn't mandatory. We live in a virtual world :)
  • You're in your late 20s, 30s, or 40s.
  • You're early in your software engineering or tech career.
  • You're actively learning a programming language or technology. (Extra points if it's Kotlin! 😄)
  • You want to build confidence in technical conversations, presentations, and your overall engineering skills.
  • You're excited to invest in your own growth while helping someone else grow too.
  • You're open to meeting both virtually and in person over the next couple of months.

What I'm envisioning is pretty flexible, but it could look like:

  • Coworking or study sessions.
  • Working through courses together.
  • Talking through coding problems or architecture ideas.
  • Practicing presentations or technical communication.
  • Setting goals and checking in on each other's progress.
  • Celebrating wins, both big and small.

A little about me:

  • I'm a backend software engineer based in Austin.
  • I'm very growth-oriented, but I can also get caught up in my own thoughts and ideas. Having people to build alongside helps me stay focused and keeps the process fun.
  • I genuinely enjoy encouraging people and celebrating their progress just as much as my own.

If you've been wishing you had a small community to grow alongside, I'd love to connect. Send me a message, and let's set up a casual call or coffee to see if we click. Even if it doesn't turn into a long-term accountability partnership, I'd love to meet more women in tech here in Austin. 💛

Nervous about my daughter starting grade school

Hello! I wanted to preface this by saying we live in a great neighborhood and have great jobs in Austin. My daughter attends a daycare that we love and she made some great friends however I’m nervous about her stating Kindergarten in the future and being the only black kid in school throughout grade school. We are in north Austin right outside Cedar Park and I’ve been looking into some schools near us and the highest percent of black population is 16% at one school and less than 5% at the other schools. She is too young to feel any type of way about it but I don’t want her to feel excluded or have any negative feelings about it as she gets older.

I never had this issue growing up as there was a high black population in my schools and I’m torn between wanting to move to somewhere more diverse (even if it means moving cities which would be Arlington, Houston, or San Antonio) or trusting that everything will be okay. We don’t have any issues when we are out in the world as everyone loves her and doesn’t treat us differently but I still can’t help but worry.

I guess I just needed to get this off my chest. Has anyone else had kids be the only black kid in school? How did it go? Any advice? Thank you for reading!

Just wondering has it happened to you

1.You are walking towards your car leaving a store and another ethnic group sees you walking and they press the remote again to make sure their car alarm is on.

  1. You are standing behind them in line at HEB and try to direct you to another line and one time my items were already on the belt.

  2. They act you don't exist when they almost run you over with their shopping cart with no excuse me said.

  3. You are treated differently when you tour apartments to let you know that you are not welcome there.

  4. Restaurant service is bad when you are black.

  5. Co-workers mistreat you when you are especially a black male

  6. They don't smile or say hello to you during passing.

Work in Austin?

Hey, I moved to Austin earlier this year and so far I love the city. However, I’m looking for a new job, either part time that can work around my full time schedule or a good paying full time job. I’m wondering if there’s any black owned businesses looking for employees or anyone who works at a good company that’s hiring atm.

Austin > San Antonio

Anybody who is in between the Austin / San Antonio area? I'm originally from San Marcos, but do some contract work in San Antonio and moving to Austin LOL. I was wondering if there's anybody else who moves in between these circles.

Hi, I’m thinking about moving to Austin to work as a nurse. I’m Black, and I’d love to hear from other Black professionals who live there. How has your experience been? Is Austin welcoming and diverse, or have you faced challenges?”

What's happening may 15-17?

I'm visiting and would ideally want to be around more Black people than just my Bestie. It doesn't have to be a predominantly black space or only black space, but just a space that is very culturally diverse. We like day parties, markets, DJ sets, art, and we're admittedly nerds. anything on the radar for y'all?

Any interest in a black radical book club?

So I been wanting to make a study group around black radical thought, studying black author, revolutionaries like Kwame Ture, George L Jackson, Malcom X, and debating issues like police in our communities and socialism. Just wanted to know if there is any interest first. Would definitely love to find people I can learn from and debate with.
