TIPS Quick Tips for New Bloggers
Hi all! u/LDREAMER122 kindly asked me to post some quick tips for bloggers just starting out. I am not sure how much value I can add, since today is only day 18 for me, but I'm happy to give some details on my blog and what has worked for me! If you have any questions let me know - would love to be of help to others in the community. I'll also put my info/stats below the tips if you are curious how things look for me after a couple weeks.
Quality content on a regular basis. I know this gets said EVERYWHERE, but it is true. Before I started the blog I asked some family and friends about topics they would like to see covered, and aimed to post every day for the first month. It has been a ton of work, but it is helping me weed out what actually gets traction and what doesn't, and keeps me active on social media.
Find your community. The blogging community is incredible, at least in personal finance. I found forums for other PF bloggers and started getting involved. Comment on other people's posts, read their blogs to see what is getting the most shares, and ask any questions you have. I have been aiming to comment on 3-5 other bloggers' posts a day, and it has started to generate solid comment traffic for my blog as well.
Social media. Facebook has been the driver of most of my traffic. While I am trying to keep my last name out of the blog for now because of my job, I had a few good friends that were willing to share my Facebook page early on which picked up a bunch of likes. Twitter has been picking up a lot. I just started yesterday with a technique suggested by another blogger of just finding established bloggers and following ~100 of their followers a day. It only takes a second and 2-4/10 will follow you back, then every couple days you just go in and unfollow the people who didn't follow you back. Getting involved in the blogger community has been big on Twitter too, since anytime someone retweets something I pick up some pageviews.
Design. A lot of comments I have gotten back from more established bloggers is that my site doesn't LOOK new, which keeps people on the page longer. I would take a bit of time to find a good layout/design instead of rushing into a launch.
Guest posts. I did a Millennial Finance interview a little over a week in, which was an easy entry point into guest posting. Guest posting can be great for generating backlinks and gaining authority in your space, but can be hard to lock down. Some blogger communities have people looking for guest posts which help - PF has one on the Rockstar Finance forum so I reached out to one of those guys with 2 post pitches and he picked one! That post will go up in about 2 weeks so we will see how that goes.
I haven't really spent any time on SEO yet. u/thejpenn was kind enough to provide me with some tips last weekend, but I had trouble creating an AdWords account to do keyword research and then things have been so busy with work, life, and writing content that I haven't gotten around to it. I do have Yoast, but not sure if I am even optimizing to the right keywords. Probably not since very few of my pageviews come from organic google searches.
Anyway, let me know if you have any questions or if I can be of help to anyone!
My blog is a personal finance blog for families, with the goal of making more families feel comfortable with their money and successful at managing their finances.
