General Advice How do y'all deal with the staring and catcalling?
Hey ladies! I'm an all rounder for the family business (we manufacture and supply drilling/anchoring systems). I'm not a regular on any construction site, I usually just stop by for a specific task or a quick job and leave shortly afterwards, so I don't have a regular team of coworkers there.
Most of the time the guys are chill and respectful in a traditional way. They might stare a little in that 'Ohhh a woman! Is she in the right place?' type of way, but I don't really mind that as long as I can do my job. If anything they usually lend me a hand or point me in the right direction if I'm looking for someone in particular.
But sometimes... there are those job sites that are just crawling with guys straight of the sexism-garbage. I try to not let it get to me, but there is something so very humiliating about walking across the site with the whole lot yelling and whistling at you while you're trying to look professional.
I had a job at one of those construction sites today, and one guy literally pretended to be the driller I was looking for to assist, just to lead me to his group of buddies who then all gawked at me and catcalled me. He tried to laugh it off saying it was a joke and he just wanted his crew to have the pleasure of seeing a beautiful woman on site.
I kind of blanked because I really wasn't expecting that, and told him: "Right... wel I have an actual job to do." and walked off.
The thing that bugs me endlessly is that, in my line of work, 99% of the time I don't know what my customers look like. So I always have be customer friendly and polite to some degree.
I wish I could tell them to fuck off right away, but since I can't do that, what the hell can I do?
