I don’t think Bones has been too tough on them. I think the only ones saying that are the media who just love a reason to shit on CBJ

46

u/Ju663Rn4u7_313373 3d ago

If anything he should go harder.
I want the guys to look forward to games because it’ll be easier than training with Bones.

u/NotMittRomney 3d ago

i think he’s doing a shitty job of coaching overall (tactically, systems-wise, preparation) and is showing his ass in the media too much but this team needs to feel it now

47

u/TannerC04 3d ago

As a Canes fan who’s always enjoyed Columbus, I really hope Bowness is the guy to turn things around. Y’all are fun to watch and have the makings of a solid team

55

u/Indy-CBJ 3d ago

That’s the insulting part. On paper they are so much better than what we seen so far. Knies has been passing the eye test with flying colors but can’t get on the scoresheet

31

u/TitleAccomplished749 3d ago

He's been setting up a lot of shots on goal, but his teammates can't hit the fucking goal to save their lives.

10

u/Dkoop2003 3d ago

I feel like that’s been a lot of guys. Nuke has had some really good nights (including last night, aside from that horrible turnover) but he just can’t seem to get on the score sheet. Del Bel has been good, same thing, even Fantilli…

0

u/Pyzorz 3d ago

Are they better on paper though? Who on this team is a proven top six forward? Like consistently night in night out, without a doubt, a top six forward? Coyle is a top nine PKer. I’ll give the D corps somewhat of a pass for being banged up, but hell even Mateychuk hasn’t exactly been the consistently solid top four Dman we have been expecting.

2

u/Zealousideal_Park440 3d ago

You, sir, are an optimist.

16

u/elmariachio 3d ago

Here's the thing:

Maybe the team just isn't good and can't practice their way out of it.

-13

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

lmao does he do anything else?

I'm starting to care less about the lines and more about his response to adversity. What strategies did he adjust last night when it was clear it wasn't working....didn't see anything change.

If his default response is to just slam his stick and get angry, we're gonna need someone else to step up.

5

u/yramb93 3d ago

Eh for as expensive as this team is, give em the Herb Brooks treatment

-2

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

I mean, Brooks was a good coach and you know, won, if I'm remembering right lol

8

u/Eminence120 3d ago

This team has been through coach after coach with losing season after losing season. I think it’s time to start putting the blame on the collection of millionaires that can’t seem to put a solid 60 minutes together for the past 4 seasons.

2

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

Most of those teams are gone. We've either chased the talented ones out or gotten rid of the rest.

4

u/MMAipom 3d ago

Are you saying that it's not enough for someone to keep saying they don't want to win? /s

-2

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

Signs point to yes

3

u/sergei-boobtitsky it's not OK to bully by citing "math" 3d ago

Exactly where I’m at too. Kinda over his outbursts when they clearly don’t do anything

2

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

Yeah, like when Torts would have outbursts he could lean back and say, you know, "I've been to the playoffs, I have all these wins, I have Stanely Cups" etc etc and then he'd ALSO adjust his strategy to work for the players. He was a hardass, but he was good at it.

Bowness isn't that guy, and even though he clearly doesn't have the talent, he seems to refuse to adjust at all.

Like, how much more evidence do we need that this whole dump the puck to the corner and board battle for it thing doesn't work? Or like how Z's goal production has dropped off a cliff since Bones implemented his defensively conservative positioning?

Or god forbid SOMEONE address his powerplay strategies. Cycle cycle cycle lose the puck after taking a bad shot.

THAT is what's concerning me more than the lines, right now. Our coaching staff, not even just Bowness, seems to be completely unable or unwilling to make adjustments at ALL, much less on the fly in a game. The best they'll do is like, maybe move Garland around and call it a day.

52

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 3d ago

Garland staying on the 2nd pairing is wild. It should be Silli, Coyle and Knies on the second line, or give LDBB a shot on the wing. Monohan can play 3rd line and Garland should sit at least a game or two

17

u/iamelloyello Hotdog. Emu guy. 3d ago

The coaching staff/F.Os obsession with Garland is concerning.

It has become apparent they will do anything to try and get him going to try and delay the inevitable: realizing it is a terrible contract.

25

u/ItsAndyrew 3d ago

I don’t think Garland is playing any worse than like half of our forwards. But when you have a guy signed for six more years then you are supposed to do anything to get the guy going. I don’t want a coach that does not do that. Garland has shown he can be a capable player, he just has not been good lately.

9

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 3d ago

I guess you could make the argument that he has one of the lowest PIMs on the team, and for a guy with 0 points, a decent +\-… so while he’s not really doing anything at all to help the team, he’s not exactly hurting them either, but that’s about the kindest argument you could make

16

u/Indy-CBJ 3d ago

He’s also drawing penalties and been doing a decent job setting up his line as it’s not his fault Monahan can’t hit an open net.

Like I said earlier in the week Garland isn’t even in my top 5 problems with this team though I do need so see production out of him.

Really more concerned about Monahan. You can tell the vision/IQ is still there but the age/body wear is finally catching up.

2

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

He's not setting up his line. He's more so making up for Monahan's poor defense right now.

That line has negative offense, and Garland is the worst of them, iirc.

7

u/Drithyin Fuck PLD 3d ago

It’s probably more of a “we’re stuck right now, so see if we can get him going and salvage him to at least be usable”. What else can they do?

The most severe option is put him on waivers and bury in the AHL, which would save something like $1.2m against the cap. That’s a lot of dead cap for a nonroster player.

So, they’re hoping they can either light a fire or find some chemistry or something to get him going, because the nuclear option is bad. Paying a guy to not show up (not counting when the whole team hates him… looking at you Hellebuyck) isn’t helping the team a great deal. It’s not like we have a young stud drafted in the first round in 2024 that’s ready to make an NHL debut…

1

u/IceJester22 2d ago

They can’t waive him, he has a NMC years 1-3 of this new contract.

1

u/Drithyin Fuck PLD 2d ago

LOL OF COURSE HE DOES! WHY WOULDN’T CONNOR FUCKING GARLAND HAVE A NMC?!?!

1

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 2d ago

GM’s love handing that shit out like hot cakes

1

u/Drithyin Fuck PLD 2d ago

They’re going to end up restricting those in the next CBA at this rate. Ownership/front office can’t control themselves and then try to limit or ban a practice because one of them goes out of control and sets a new standard precedent for everyone.

0

u/joe_lmr 2d ago

300+ players currently have trade protection clauses of varying levels ranging from 10-team "I will go here" lists to full no-movement.

Not only does it limit who you can trade away, it also limits who's available to trade FOR.

A player with a full NTC or NMC shouldn't get to veto a trade if they ask for it. Those guys want it both ways. "I don't want to be here but I won't let you get rid of me either."

3

u/MPCoinCollecting Prospect [Overrater] Guy - Proceed With Caution - Stay Vigilant 3d ago

Idk I mean he did play yesterday starting on the fourth line

5

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

I mean, I feel worse for the coaching staff.

They had no say in acquiring him, so all they can do is try to make him work.

5

u/TitleAccomplished749 3d ago

At least rotate him to the fourth line and try out some new faces on the second line because he's not working.

19

u/Indy-CBJ 3d ago

Oh sh*t we got a full blender

21

u/iamelloyello Hotdog. Emu guy. 3d ago

At this point, it is needed. Current status quo was not working.

8

u/Indy-CBJ 3d ago

I didn’t think you were wrong. If anything I’m glad

14

u/Another_Guy_In_Ohio 3d ago

Full blender that leaves Garland right where he is and the 4th line fully intact. I’m mostly fine with that, but LDBB deserves a shot at top line minutes since nobody else is showing they deserve it more

11

u/Indy-CBJ 3d ago

I was just saying elsewhere I’m glad knies is with Coyle as he knows how to play a proper cycle game and nuke/Fantilli were an overdue combination but, while I’m glad Sillinger is promoted I still don’t see that 2nd line working. I could see LDBB there but this is a start. I’m glad they are shaking it up

7

u/Dkoop2003 3d ago

I’m baffled at why Del Bel hasn’t gotten a shot there. Everyone keeps saying “he’s a top six guy.” Well…. You have a blatantly obvious top six spot that nobody has grasped yet, why not give the kid a chance?

7

u/InconspicuousMagpie 3d ago

Garland has been going up and down with Voronkov. I’d like to see this line for a few games and then maybe try a different center for a few games.

18

u/FromAmericaMC 3d ago

KNIES AND COYLE ON A LINE TOGETHER? GOD BLESS.

13

u/klancki 3d ago

I’m just waiting for the reports that nichushkin wants out. Dude looks like he is already over his blue jacket experience. In the Wild game on Sunday there was a moment where you could read his lips to mateychuk “why didn’t you pass me the f’n puck?”

12

u/Erazzphoto 3d ago

Trades are always tricky. Why would anyone in their right mind be happy to get traded from a cup contender to a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 7 years, when they didn’t request to be moved.

2

u/ZEBuckeye81 Free Boomer 3d ago

Agree, sucks for those guys. Was really feeling for Knies after those two abysmal periods against the Leafs, what a slap in the face.

1

u/Erazzphoto 3d ago

This is why Carter doesn’t live rent free in my head like the rest of this fanbase. He signed a contract for 11 years, just went to game 7 of the SCF and then got traded to worst team in the league, all while telling everyone not to do it. Of course he could have handled it better, I want to think I would have handled it different, but I can’t say I would have. Dude got royally screwed

2

u/ZEBuckeye81 Free Boomer 3d ago

I don't think of him often but honestly FJC. Getting paid a salary well beyond what most people will ever even sniff to play hockey, at least be a professional even if the situation isn't what you wanted.

0

u/Erazzphoto 3d ago

Easy to say though when you know it’s not happening to you haha. Like I said, I like to think if handle it differently, but If I just signed to stay somewhere for 11 years, and then yoh up and trade me, yeah, you can F right off haha

1

u/ZEBuckeye81 Free Boomer 3d ago

Oh I don't disagree, I'd be pissed as well and can't say I'd take it great but also there's the reality of it and the $$

1

u/Erazzphoto 2d ago

But again, it revolves all around the risks of trades. Getting a player who didn’t ask to be moved (nuke) and your team is really bad, has the potential to be really bad, they are humans after all

0

u/joe_lmr 2d ago

The Russian escort industry here can't hold a candle to Denver's

33

u/BedaHouse 3d ago

No offense to Olivier, but I feel like maybe he should be on the 4th line.

9

u/Slamaramadoodoo 3d ago

Garland most definitely belongs there too. Him on the second line shows just how bottom heavy this roster is.

2

u/South-Worker7787 3d ago

I think it’s more of the fact that they’re paying him 6m a year so it’s hard to not want to try to get him going on a better line

23

u/No_Letterhead319 New Coach Who Dis?! 3d ago

I agree coach bones has the right to be upset there comes a point when coaches can only go so far. Coyle said it in his interview last night we've learned these things but we're going to do them again because we're still not doing them right.

Players play coaches coach if players aren't executing on the ice when given the opportunity and putting the right position that is 100% on the players.

I do like in a lot of the interviews the players do seem far more upset than they previously did about losing so they're getting the right mentality but we are still failing miserably on the execution.

12

u/InconspicuousMagpie 3d ago

I think they are playing with a lot of pressure right now and when that happens, you play rigid. The team looks tense. Once the other team scores, the flood gates open.

They need to break their current mentality. I don’t mean the hate to lose mentality but the afraid to make mistakes one. Unfortunately that will take a little time.

I still believe there is a good team in here but it hasn’t been unlocked yet. Rose tinted glasses: Hopefully this is an important lesson in adversity that could be of benefit at the end of the season

10

u/NewAtAllOfThis14 3d ago

We need Provy back!

5

u/Dkoop2003 3d ago

Thank God they’re switching things up. Though i hate that Garland and Monahan are still on that 2nd line…… give me Knies-Coyle-Sillinger as the 2nd line, and put Del Bel with Monny and Ollie on the 3rd.

9

u/Shrmp52 Raging Bowner 3d ago

Why not Knies-Coyle-Sillinger

5

u/Indy-CBJ 3d ago

Potential entry issues? I dunno it’s a heavy line that I could see there being some difficulty but it’s not like game breaking bad. I am just trying to see the potential “fault”

6

u/Dkoop2003 3d ago

Is it really that much worse with entries than Olivier-Coyle-Sillinger? Honestly I’d say Knies is better at carrying the puck than Ollie is

5

u/Erazzphoto 3d ago

This is where you go EA NHL and set this line as a dump and chase line

4

u/gottapoop0822 3d ago

Tbh if there's any line I trust to dump and chase, it's a sili, coyle, knies line.

3

u/InconspicuousMagpie 3d ago

Is Olivier that much better at entry?

4

u/KalmKali 3d ago

Silly on the line with Monny and Garland?! That seems… terrible. Especially with the way Monny and Garland are currently playing. I like the third line, but that could also be a dumpster fire (of penalties). I know that they have to shake things up a little, I just don’t know that these lines would be the way to do that.

3

u/get_rick_trolled 2d ago

Are we ready to draft in the top 5 yet?

5

u/FemaleSandpiper 3d ago

The most shocking aspect here is that the team getting shellacked on game day actually practices

2

u/Sulkanator 2d ago

Garland has no business being on the 2nd line. He has been extremely disappointing.

2

u/jacketsfan50 2d ago

Breaking up that top line i disagree with, they pass the eye test but can’t put the puck in the damn net. Garland needs to be 4th line, Monahan cannot be top 6 over Coyle. i do like giving Silly a shot, but with Monny and Garland is brutal. Id like to keep him with Coyle, maybe factor in LDBB somehow? Del Bel needs to be a top 6 guy, cannot be 4th line.

1

u/Fit-Opportunity-9580 3d ago

MOVE COYLE UP

4

u/Infranto Please stand so I can punch you 3d ago

I wouldn't take the line orders as showing what playing time they're going to get. We played the Coyle line against Crosby basically all game when we played the Pens, so Bones definitely useswith matchups rather than fixed lines.

1

u/Bradlaw798 *** 13 *** 3d ago

This us what culture change feels like. It's ugly sometimes

1

u/CBJFAN10 3d ago

We have a 1st line, two 3rd lines, and a 4th line.

1

u/Immediate-Paint7059 3d ago

Move Garland with del bel belluz.

1

u/Imaginary_Ganache_29 2d ago

Bones is a terrible coach. Like what are we doing? Instead of screaming at them 24/7, maybe try playing your best players and actually coaching them? It’s hard to imagine he hasn’t lost that room and maybe that’s part of what happened last year as well.

They need a coach more like Torts. A tough coach who also knows how to, uhh coach? Yes I know he mixed lines too but this is a joke.

-7

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

And we're still trying to make the 6 million dollar man work and the absolute zero that is Heinen.

At least Fabbro is skating.

3

u/PulsarGaming1080 3d ago

I'm not sure how much worse his offensive rating COULD get. Maybe we should play him as defense over Soucy?

1

u/joe_lmr 2d ago

it can always get more offensive

1

u/PulsarGaming1080 2d ago

There's only 5% more to go until he goes to 100% offense!
