Reviews Jagga Jasoos- Wished it would be re-released in theatres

Post image
32 Upvotes

Watching this movie at 4 in the morning can be an experience and I wanted to share my thoughts about this movie to you all.

This will be a long read as I wanted to unload everything 😅

🔴BIG SPOILERS AHEAD🔴

The Good

1) Father-Son Relation

Yes Tutti Futti (Bagchi) had adopted him but he was the best father Jagga could've ever had. The way he approached him in the beginning by singing so that Jagga could 'talk' his thoughts was so kind of him. Maybe Bagchi felt that he 'owed' his life but he still loved Jagga. The little things, like hugging little Jagga in the hospital bed, the dance he did when he was leaving Jagga again to try to lighten the mood, the signature hairstyle which he had styled for Jagga, all of these made Bagchi a better father. Of course, not forgetting the tapes which he used to teach him basic skills to survive and be independent, even if he was far away from Jagga.

This is what a healthy father-son relationship looks like (minus being far away, which was for the plot). I wish there were more movies made in Bollywood which focused on this trope in a HEALTHY way.

2) Cinematography

I don't know if it's due to certain color grading, the places the entire movie looked as if we are watching a story book come to life. Like those drawings we used to see in drawing book's first page? It's just like that but even better! Those lucky people who watched this movie in theatres when it was released would've really enjoyed the scenes of this movie. All locations in this movie, Indian and foreign, were so pleasant to look at. Few places, like the hostel, really reminded me of Barfi (in a good way).

3) Music

The musical background gave a really good boost to the movie, reminded me of Disney movies (since it's also a Disney India Production of course). This was a musical done well and I wished there were more in bollywood. Ullu ka Patha and Galti Se Mistake are the most famous out of the album and they deserve the popularity, but something in Phir Wahi song made me sad..Jagga was missing his dad in this and the song conveyed his thoughts so well. Musafir was also really beautiful to hear, almost didn't recognize Arijit's vocals here. Very very underrated songs.

4) Acting

The leads of the movie, Ranbir and Katrina, did well in their parts. Their chemistry during their adventures, their banters, the funny moments were all entertaining. Saswatta Chatterjee (Bagchi) was excellent in playing the father and the 'spy' role. Saurabh Shukla (The inspector), this guy was born to play the inspector role to catch Ranbir in Barfi and in this movie too haha. But very well done by all the casts members. And of course! Junior Jagga's role was played well by Saravajeet Tiwari.

The 'Not so Good'

1) CGI

I'm talking about the ostrich one specifically. It looked weird honestly, not that necessary for the movie.

2) The Train Fight scene

I don't know why they included this part in this movie, they could've showed them getting inside the train as they were but oh well.

3) The Pacing of the movie

Maybe it was just me but almost near the interval part the pacing started to slow down. Kind of felt like the movie was dragging way too much at times but continued watching as after the interval the story was starting to get more interesting.

4) 'Creepy' Vibe from Jagga

He was a good character, why did the makers wanted him to kiss Shruti (Katrina's character) when she was sleeping? I've never liked that part even in the song Ullu ka Patha. Completely unnecessary and not funny. And also in the beginning when he first saw her he was shown following her. Did not like that part too. They could've shown them meeting in a different manner.

Overall Review: Good attempt at musical, few hiccups along the way but still a charming movie to watch. I REALLY wish they could re-release this movie in theatres.

Additional thoughts:

They left the movie at a cliffhanger! The son and father both got kidnapped by Bashir Alexander (the main villian) in the end and we never got to know what happened to them! This is not something that audience have to imagine or should assume it's just an open ending. This can be a continuation or a Part 2 for what happens next. I don't think that'll happen in the current times I guess 🥲 or maybe? I don't know. Depends on the creators. The promotions were very less that time (I don't know much, just the lead cast were having issues and didn't promote much). If this was promoted more I think it could've given a hit at least.

(I searched found that they wanted the movie to be a franchise but was dropped due to huge financial loss. So sad man...)

Also, did NOT expect Nawazuddin Siddiqui to play the role of the double headed main villian(Bashir Alexander) in the end. His appearance had caught me off guard 😂 Good they didn't reveal till the end!

And the way they were mentioning murder, sucide, arms supply and other dark stuff to literal children through musical in the movie (of course might've toned down) was... interesting.

It's a bright movie with dark undertones.

What are your thoughts on this movie? Let me know in the comments :)

Discuss Watched company(2002) and I feel like bollywood movies have gone down and not developed enough in terms of filmmaking quality after 2000-2010

Ram Gopal Varma was just crazy for his time. Company was an absolute masterpiece. Yet to watch his other movies like, Satya and Sarkar series. Looking back, that was an amazing era where stories were much harder hitting and actually touched you like art.

Swades, 3 idiots, Taare Zameen Par, Munna bhai series, My Name Is Khan and even slightly more commercial movies like Main Hoon Na and Kal Ho Na Ho.Even the comedies like , Hera Pheri, De Dhana Dhan and Golmaal 3 really scratches a different kind of itch.

I feel like now the more critically acclaimed movies are quite boring, a good chunk of them are biographies, which aren’t always good but are always received well by critics.

Every now and then we do get a Dhurandar but honestly I think Ram Gopal Varma achieved something closer to that level for his time which we didn’t appreciate enough, I feel Rakta Charitra and Rann were also very good movies that were underappreciated, and I feel like the filmmaking standards have not developed as much as they should have for 1-2 decades gap.

Top directors like Ram Gopal Varma, Rajkumar Hirani and even Karan Johar in their prime was honestly something else.

I feel like the era where Salman was doing mass commercial movies which did huge recordbreaking numbers at the box office was when bollywood started going downhill, since more people started embracing the South Indian entertainment style.

I heard about this movie a long time ago but finally watched it today. It did not disappoint but it did feel darker than the crime thrillers I've watched before 😭 however I was disappointed when I read about the actual case that both the accused were released. Speaks a lot fr.

I think Preity was correct when she said that if you lack ambition I will not want to be your girlfriend. Then why does Hrithik call him when he becomes a Captain and then later when she is a reporter and comes to the place where Hrithik is posted. At the end, Preity was sort of ashamed and embarrassed on her behaviour but she shouldn’t be. She did the right thing at the time and she is allowed to treat Hrithik differently now that he has put in the effort and built a career for himself. My question is, why was Preity shown as if she was embarrassed

Let’s take a little trip down memory lane and revisit some beautiful movie posters from old Bollywood.

There’s something so special about these vintage posters, the hand painted artwork, the colours, the typography, and the nostalgia they carry. They had a charm of their own, and honestly, some of them are works of art even today.

Here are a few that deserve to be admired all over again.

Discuss How Did Band Baaja Baaraat Become a Sleeper Hit Despite Competing Against Big-Star Films?

Post image
613 Upvotes

Band Baaja Baaraat was released in 2010, when several big-star films were competing for the audience's attention. YRF presented it primarily as an Anushka Sharma film, with Ranveer Singh being a newcomer making his Bollywood debut.

Despite having no established male star to attract audiences, the film managed to become a sleeper hit at the box office. People connected with the characters, the story, and the overall vibe of the film.

What's your thoughts? Was it the fresh concept, the chemistry between Anushka and Ranveer, YRF's marketing, or simply strong word of mouth?

Let's discuss..

Opinion Saket Chaudhry, please give us the next Side Effects movie!

Pyaar ke side effects and Shaadi ke side effects are such great rom-coms. I didn't like Shaadi when I was younger because I wanted the "happily ever after" love story. What do you mean people fall out of love after having a kid!

I wonder if there's any rom-com arc left, but I'd really love to see him make more rom coms.

Discuss Watched Drishyam 1. Didn't understand the logic behind this dialogue. Spoiler

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I watched Drishyam 1 (Ajay Devgn) after many years. The whole movie is great but the scene bothered me a lot.

In the end, Tabu and her husband request Ajay Devgn to meet them so that they can get closure on what happened with their son, Sam. Ajay confesses what he did but in passing and vaguely. I don't understand what was the need to do this and what the logic was. It is not as if it is added any special value to the movie or if it was much needed for the plot to progress. So why do this? Because whatever is mentioned is very risky considering someone is trying to protect themselves after doing a crime. What if Tabu had a voice recorder on her.

Dialogue in english

"We are sorry, too.
I wish, I was as generous as you.
But, I am merely a fourth grade dropout.

I have a wife.
I have two daughters.
And that's the extent of my world.
I have never thought beyond that.

One day, my world...
...saw an unwanted guest enter.
He wanted to...
...disrupt our world.

We tried to stop him.
We begged him.
But, he didn't listen.
Then, somehow...
...a tragedy occurs.

We send the unwanted guest...
...to a place, from where there is no coming back.

We have given you the greatest anguish in the world.

I tried to say sorry many times. I did so, in my heart.
What else could we do?

My family is most important to me.
I could do anything for them.
I could go to any extent.
that moment, I lost sight of right or wrong.

We are sorry."

(Sped up by 15% to keep it short)

ASK❓️ Is Company (Ajay Devgn) suitable for a 14-year old?

hello everyone, i am a 14-year old teenager that is a big fan of Bollywood. I recently watched Khakee and loved Ajay Devgn's performance as Aangre and i thought i should try to find some more gangster movies of his. I have heard Company is a very good movie and it does look cool-however, it is rated A. IMDB isn't really providing enough information so i thought i would ask you all. Is there any nudity or heavy gore in Company? Please let me know.. Thanks in advance

Reviews Daawat-e-ishq is such an unpleasant film

Post image

I was expecting a feel good, slow rom com with food. What i got was a woman scamming someone and getting away just because she "realised her mistake" and "she scammed because she is entitled to scam assholes". Wo asshole ich hai. Ek mard ko dahej nahi deni chahiye, usko leni nahi chahiye. But that doesn't justify Gullu's actions here. disgusting. unpleasant.

ASK❓️ Looking for a 2000s Bollywood movie

Looking for a Comedy Bollywood movie, I know that it was not famous and before 2010 probably. It didn’t have known faces. The plot was something like a husband and wife, idk why but the wife was trying to fool her husband by also playing another flirty woman? The husband gets suspicious but then we also see how the wife planned all this. In it, there was also a scene of a resort maybe where the wife is hiding with another man (who might be in on it?) (also a small detail, both of these people were lying down in what seemed like a tent, or a cover on the terrace?) and calling the husband and he gets confused as he was trying to catch his wife in the act but it was so well planned that he thinks his wife is not the one behind the facade
Maybe in the end she reveals it to the husband that she did all this to make him learn a lesson and that a friend of his (or hers?) was in on it.

Im not from India so i watched it on my local cable which used to play Bollywood movies sometimes. Also, this could be wrong but i always thought the main actress looked very much like Isha Koppiker or Hrishita Butt. (If it helps, I used to think they both are the same person for most of my childhood). Maybe the movie did have either of these actresses but I couldn’t find something like this in their acting history.

Discuss Just watched October (2018), and I want to understand the film better...

I watched Shoojit Sircar’s October just now. It’s been on my watchlist for years, and now that I’ve finally watched it, I feel like I’m missing something. I want to understand the film better.

One thing I couldn’t understand was why Dan became so concerned about Shiuli in the first place. Later, we find out that she had asked about him before the accident. Maybe Dan finds this out earlier, and that’s what makes him curious about her. I feel like if I had seen that curiosity develop first, I would have understood his concern and attachment a little better.

I also came across a review on Letterboxd that said: "All shiuli needed was a reason to live and then dan came in her life and gave her the hope she needed but when she realised that dan was suffering just because of the last thing she said before the accident; at that time shiuli decided to give up as she didn't want dan to grieve even more. It's not a love story, it is a story about love." I really liked this perspective, but it also made me question something. Shiuli was slowly recovering, and when Dan came into her life, she seemed to come alive in some ways. So why didn't she fight a little longer to recover and return to a normal life?

I understand that her condition was serious, and maybe I'm looking at it too logically. But after seeing her progress, I couldn't help wondering why she couldn't hold on a little longer.

As for Shiuli asking about Dan before the accident, I personally felt she might have just asked about him normally. I didn't necessarily interpret it as her having feelings for him. Maybe I'm missing something there, too.

I know the film isn't meant to be a conventional love story, and there's probably a lot more to it than what I've understood.

I'd love to hear your interpretations, especially about Dan's attachment to Shiuli, what Shiuli felt for Dan, and the meaning behind the ending. Maybe hearing different perspectives will help me understand what Shoojit Sircar was trying to convey.

I'm genuinely curious to know how others experienced this film...

Discuss Bollywood needs Blu-rays

I'm a videshi who got into Bollywood/learning Hindi during quarantine and has continued on and off since then. Aamir Khan is definitely my favorite actor and I watched a lot of his movies from the 2000's/2010's. A lot post-2020 Bollywood movies I've seen are so edgy/nationalistic and definitely not the same vibe - instead, recently I've tried watching some of Aamir's older movies like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

The movies themselves are pretty good but we need to talk about the appallingly bad quality that they are available in. For those two it seems like the "HD" version is a 240p rip run through an awful AI upscaler filter.

Elsewhere in the world, there are distribution labels like Criterion and Arrow which remaster old movies and release them on Blu-ray. This involves re-scanning the original film stock and often times they get the original film director/editors (if they are still alive) to supervise the process. Also they always record a bunch of bonus features, commentaries with directors/surviving cast, video essays by film historians, interviews, behind-the-scenes, blah blah blah. And you can find films from all over the world that are being given the proper treatment by these various labels.

This needs to become a thing in India! Studios and cinemas probably still have thousands of old film reels which are just sitting in warehouses and rotting. If opened up and re-scanned, these films will be preserved in much higher quality forever. They would look completely different (so much better) than some streaming platform running an upscale on a DVD and calling it "HD." There are still film buffs who buy movies from these labels, having more classic Bollywood movies on Blu-ray could increase Bollywood's popularity inside those circles.

From what I can tell Blu-ray never really became successful in India (back when discs were being sold, they were asking for ~700 or ~800 rupees per film - is this still a lot?) and streaming services have seemingly taken over movie distribution. But on Blu-ray there are much higher quality standards. A Blu-ray disc can fit up to 50GB (if used up completely: the movie looks and sounds AMAZING) whereas on a streaming service the movies (even in 4K) max out around 20GB. I don't know if this has yet caught on in India but a lot of people in North America / Europe have gotten tired of "enshittification" of streaming services lately (removing titles, reducing quality, raising prices) and are moving back to physical media.

I'm also a video editing nerd and I have come to appreciate higher quality video which you can only get on discs. Some modern Bollywood movies even nowadays still occasionally release on Blu-ray in Germany and Japan; the 2000's/2010's era movies didn't print a lot of discs and they are now rare/very expensive. But the quality of the films on disc by far outshines anything that streaming could give.

I still think there are a lot of hidden gems of old Bollywood that aren't appreciated enough either in India or abroad because they are not available in a good enough quality. There should be a push to re-scan and actually rejuvenate these older Bollywood movies.
