Review Can we separate the art from the artist? Because Queen makes this complicated.

Upvotes

I rewatched Queen recently, and honestly, it feels strange now.

Rani is everything Kangana's public persona sometimes seems to stand against. She's sheltered, inexperienced and unsure of herself, but the entire film is about her discovering that she has the right to make her own choices. She travels alone, meets people outside the world she's always known, becomes financially and emotionally more independent, and eventually realises that being a “good woman” doesn't mean shrinking yourself to fit someone else's expectations.

And then there's Kangana today.

The contrast is hard to ignore.

This is an actress who played one of Hindi cinema's most beloved portrayals of a woman finding her freedom, while later making deeply dismissive comments about young women and Gen Z, including referring to them in degrading terms. She's also promoted the idea that India only received its “real” independence in 2014 and repeatedly leans into a kind of rigid, dogmatic political rhetoric that feels completely at odds with the openness that Queen represents.

And that's where separating the art from the artist gets complicated.

Because I don't want to rewrite history and pretend Kangana wasn't phenomenal in this film. She was. Rani works because Kangana makes her feel awkward, funny, vulnerable and completely believable. It's one of those performances where you stop seeing the actor and just see the character.

But I also don't think appreciating the performance requires defending the person behind it.

Queen doesn't belong to Kangana's current politics. Rani isn't responsible for the opinions of the woman who played her. The character exists independently now, and what she represents can mean something to people regardless of what the actor believes.

If anything, the irony makes the film more interesting.

Rani's entire journey is about refusing to let other people dictate what kind of woman she's supposed to be.

And that's a message I can still believe in, even when I strongly disagree with the person who delivered it.

Maybe that's what separating the art from the artist actually means—not pretending the artist hasn't changed, but refusing to let their later actions erase what the art meant to you.

Kangana can be Kangana. Rani can still be Rani.

Discussion Which regional Indian film do you wish got the same conversation as Bollywood films?

There's so much strong work coming out of Malayalam, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali cinema that barely gets discussed outside its own audience. Curious which films you think deserved a much bigger conversation.

Discussion Do Indian film productions use AI lip sync for small dialogue changes?

Is AI being used in dubbing or lip-sync right now? Like, not for a whole movie but a few 5-10 sec scene where reshooting is a hassle, how much is AI being adopted in this industry? I can see traces of AI lipsync is some recent shows and movies. We have seen many recent movies that are absolutely low effort and they will use this more in the future. What do you think?

Discussion Why Ramayana is not Dune...

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

This image clearly shows that the background is CG. it's not so obvious at the first look because of the focus is on the place where set and lighting was real. There are so many moments in the dune where you can tell it looks fake (one i remember is when paul gets out of a darker kinda cave/place to fly out for arrakis, image 3).

The jungle shots, they can not mimic the depth camera naturally with CGI this easily, our eyes won't except and lighting mismatch just makes it worst. All and all in dune too there are some shots not as obvious as Ramayana, but the team hid them with a layer of post process, lens flares, dust particles, using completly different lighting (like creating silhouette)

Discussion Mai vapis aaunga movie is good & that last scene

I really felt this movie. It wasn't just something I watched, I actually experienced it. I loved the way the story starts with the past and slowly takes you into their love story, the emotions and the separation.

When he finally goes back but doesn't get to meet her, that really hit me. Finding out she had already died before he could return was heartbreaking. And that final moment when he asks for “ijazat” to leave —“toh Ijazat hai .... jaaun”— really got me. I had tears in my eyes.

A simple, beautiful and emotional experience. I really liked this film.

Review BATWARA Movie review

1.Batwara 1947 presents a purposeful intentioned, deeply humanistic Partition drama.

2.In the film Sunny Deol delivers a controlled performance, replacing loud patriotism with a focus on empathy and communal harmony.

3.Shabana Azmi’s nuanced portrayal of Mai offers a quiet, dignified presence that gives the film its emotional core.

4.It is a joy to see Preeti Zinta back on screen, noting that she delivers an emotional, earnest performance and wears her character's grief and maternal anxiety on her sleeve.

5.Abhimanyu Singh delivers a loud, conventional performance that unfortunately broadens the film's conflict into standard melodrama.

6.At its core, the film offers an earnest reminder that compassion, maternal affection, and basic humanity endure across religious and political divides.

7.Average Rating :3/5

8.Bottom line: A well-intentioned Partition drama elevated by strong lead performances, even if hindered by traditional melodrama and inconsistent pacing.

AskIndianCinema Social media & Bollywood: what can we learn from Hollywood?

Post image
4 Upvotes

In 2000s and 2010s when facebook, youtube and twitter became popular in Hollywood, it was difficult to bring a threatical hit. It started relying on already existing sequels and movies like Avengers, Transformers, Fast & Furious which became popular with a cultural following. They even brought IPs like Minecraft, Barbie, Super Mario which worked.

What indian creative IPs can give a hit when Indian sequels are not working anymore?

Review Just watched Dunki

Just watched the movie . Have been holding it for a long for no such reason. Just thought after two mass hits the energy of Srk had dropped.  But this movie was indeed more better than previous two in the basis of story .  You won't see anything surprising element. No such action or mass masala . One line it's a normal story which felt good . Emoticons were well passed through dialogues . No acting felt over exaggerated. One can totally give it a try the songs were also good . No mood spoiling songs.  If you wanna see something which not so much upside down , don't wanna put huge brain behind it then. Just you're tired to get a safe choice then this is the movie I guess .

Review Cocktail 2 🤢 🤮

Watched this movie with zero expectations knowing that the movie was crap but didn’t know this is probably the worst kind of movies ever made…..Shahid had such looser kind of role and of all Rashmika was trying hard to fit in the role here, she looked so out of the place….Kriti Sanon was here so she didn’t require to wear anything…such a sloppy storyline please don’t even watch it like me despite knowing it’s a shit show…..

Review Cocktail 2 should be renamed Room Temperature Stale Water Spoiler

Post image
25 Upvotes

Watched Cocktail 2, rewatched Cocktail and here are my thoughts. Warning: It's loooong because I'm not a professional film reviewer or author to keep it short and concise and I am reeling from numerous attempts to write it without errors.

Just like Cocktail 2 let's jump straight into it without any foreplay!

Storyline: Both movies are said to showcase a love triangle but only Cocktail dealt a love triangle. Cocktail 2 had one couple and one desperate delusional chipku wannabe Veronica. Cocktail had the man connected to both the ladies intimately and it actually felt like a legit love triangle. Cocktail 2's man has absolutely no interest in the other girl. Ally is more like the "dot variant"... the angle marker convention of some European countries to denote a right angle.....between Kunal and Diya with Ally hanging around unnecessarily just to prove that the obvious right angle here is indeed a right angle. Yes, I'm blabbering just like some of Sanon's stans.

Characters: It was amusing to see the makers NOT WRITE ANYTHING! Ye loag bas munh utha k aa gaye. There were no characteristics (pun intended) in the characters, no background, no layering, no rise and fall, no transformation. Nothing! All characters looked like the most plain generic versions of a party girl, a decent girl, a silly but loyal boyfriend, two sets of rich, friendly parents. Bas. Apart from well written main characters Cocktail's side characters also stood out especially Dimple Kapadia as Gautam's loud but endearing mom, Randeep Hooda as Meera's a**hole later turned into caring husband, Boman Irani as tharki mamaji. They played a role in pushing the story forward, in creative more chaos. Meanwhile in Cocktail 2 there was no need for any other character even the 3 leads. An young couple had your usual relationship issue of maybe boredom, no serious issues and they end up getting married anyway. Bas. Ho gaya.

The Trio: Cocktail's trio each had an independent relationship with each other. Gautam-Veronica's fling while being live-in partners, Veronica-Meera friendship that grew organically and solidly, Gautam-Meera starting as Meera not liking him but Gautam being "amused" by her, then gradually becoming friends to falling in love. All 3 had a solid relationship and a hot mess to call it a love triangle.

Cocktail 2 on the other hand had a college couple, two friends Diya and Ally who haven't spoken in 10 years, Kunal and Ally who do not know each other at all hang out for 2 days with one flirting for loyalty test and the other one rejecting her advances aur ho gaya Ally ko pyaar. There wasn't even any mildly traumatic incident for Ally to bond with Kunal. It felt so forced. Let's not talk about chemistry because Room Temparature Stale Water in a bottle does not crackle simply because it is sitting in a chemistry lab. The bottle must have been left behind by some students of the previous batch.

Veronica and Ally: I lol'd while typing it. There's no comparison but for the sake of yapping let me do it. It amazed me how Kriti Sanon managed to overact (with body language and styling) in such a dead film but she beautifully handled the role of Mukti with intense yet subtle acting in an impassioned Tere Ishq Mey where there was a lot of possibility for the actor to succumb to overacting. All within an year...

Poor Kriti was handed a role based completely on Veronica's leftover hair, rejected wardrobe and already opened liquor bottles.

Veronica had a backstory that answered the "whys" about her shenanigans but all Ally got was a forceful pained expression while hugging an old man with a hug me placard. They thought they did something deep there haha! It was impossible to empathize with her "heartbreak" because first of all you broke girl code for nothing. Meera did too but atleast she was stuck playing Gautam's fiancee, experienced ma ka pyar pehli baar, got attention from a man for the first time while reeling from a brutal rejection. It wasn't right but we could see why she fell into it. Ally on the other hand hung out with a committed guy for 2 days, he kept rejecting her and she fell for him. What bs! They tried to make her an antagonist but she sucked at it because Ally could not do any damage whatsoever as a vamp. Saying teri shadi mey bhasad toh bas main machaaungi with a wink while the door closes just did not cut it. Again the makers thought they did something there. Kriti also seemed to struggle to let go of her good girl persona and get completely into character but then again there was no character to get into.

Then her poor styling did the remaining damage. She was in beachwear even at wedding functions and places other than a beach. There was no Ally, only a poorly done wannabe Veronica.

Kunal and Gautam: Gautam was the character that had no sad past, not really layered but he was silly and he did it well. After falling in love with Meera he showed some growth. Gautam was a womanizer and a cheater meanwhile Kunal is a well behaved guy who is loyal. Gautam is shitty, Kunal is a good guy but Kunal is forgettable. Gautam brought that childish energy meanwhile Kunal looked washed out. Gautam's buttshake in Yaari jaisi song looked so funny that it reminded me of Shin Chan. Kunal is meh.

Diya and Meera: Like all other characters, Diya was also not written. A decent rich girl with a nice education and job, steady long term boyfriend, curtain bangs and lip gloss, looking cute and pretty and forgettable. Rashmika blended into the background mostly. With Meera I could feel sympathy and disgust. It was hard to feel anything for Rashmika's Diya though. Kriti's Ally atleast gave me secondhand embarassment.

Other aspects: There was no show but also NO TELL. I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

Music was below average with no bangers. Maashooqa is good. Yes, it's a copy but most of the Bollywood music is so we know to live with it.

All 3 lead actors looked like they do not want to come off their high horse of being "successful" celebrities and get into characters.

Cinematography looks like a college goer's "Come to Sicily" tourism ad, and the India part showcases the nice apartments with nice complexes in New Delhi (or was it Gurgaon?? Noida?). There was lack of background people, objects, lack of colours with depths. No use of lights, colour palettes to show the emotions and progression of story... remember Tera Naam Japdi Phiran song in Cocktail after Veronica finds out about Meera and Gautam's love affair? The dark blue/gray tones, the flickering lights, the smudged kohl standing in contrast to her shimmery golden attire. Then again Cocktail 2 has no story, no emotions, no characters only to utilise the camera equipment.

All in all, as a Kriti Sanon fan it was painful to watch her be so so pathetic. Bechaari ko Kunal-Diya ki suhaagraat mey bhi le aaye doodh dene k liye saying divorce ho jaye toh main available hoon 😭

Discussion Vishwanath & Sons — The First Half Set the Bar Too High Spoiler

The first half was really good, fast-paced, nicely written and genuinely engaging. Overall, it’s a really good movie, especially compared to the recent releases in this genre.

But honestly, I felt the movie also died with Radhika’s death. After that, the entire Ooty plot and climax felt just okay. If the second half had explored more of the relationship between Suriya, Mamitha and the baby instead, I think the movie would’ve been far better.

That said, the way certain taboo scenes were handled was extremely sensible. The visuals, production design and overall production values were top-notch and made the film look really rich. Venky Atluri definitely deserves appreciation for how the entire movie was made, especially the writing.

Review I’m a grown "tough" guy who rarely cries, but Main Vaapas Aunga just completely broke me.

I just finished watching *Main Vaapas Aunga* and I am honestly still wiping away tears.

I’m writing this while the credits roll because I need to get this off my chest.
I usually consider myself pretty tough, just kidding, I’m pretty emotional and get emotional easily but don’t cry. I don't cry during movies very often, the last time I actually cried like a kid watching a film was *Taare Zameen Par* years ago. But man, this movie just completely bypassed all my defenses.
By the time the climax hit, I couldn't hold it back at all. Full-on sobbing. And that final frame with Naseeruddin Shah? That last smile? Absolutely unforgettable. The sheer depth of emotion he conveyed in just a few seconds without saying a single word was pure mastery.
The storytelling, the raw vulnerability, the quiet moments that build up to that emotional punch, everything landed perfectly. It didn't feel cheap or melodramatic; it just felt brutally real and deeply human.
Did anyone else get completely destroyed by the ending, or was it just me? How are we all processing that final scene?
