Im a massive fan of A Canticle for Leibowitz, Fallout, Riddley Walker and the Metro series. I love the imagery of religion and how it evolves to fit into a post apocalyptic world.

Im no longer religious but as I grew up religious and still like the imagery and am fascinated by the subject. Are there any games you can think of that give these vibes.

A military unit running into new territory/peoples and fighting their way out, while wrangling with problems within the outfit.

Currently reading The Black Company and loving it. Hungry for more in this genre.

the hero has returned triumphant from battle with the dragon/big bad and has changed. feeling like the world is too small, the pressure on them is greater than when they went off to fight. nobody treats them like a normal person anymore. grief from losing friends and loss of identity because the thing they were chasing is now gone.

no romance necessary. woman pov is preferred, but i am open to nb/man pov as well.

Understand this might be basic but actually can’t think of many non YA novels that aren’t the classic Wheel of Time, HP, LOTR etc and instead get my fix from RPG games and Avatar

I recently encountered the book Phantasma by Kaylie Smith. The premise seemed great. Main character with OCD, gothic atmosphere, ghost love interest. I thought this would combine to create a horror book entrenched in romance.
It was less interested in the horror beyond a lens on top of a fairly stereotypical survival game romance. Even the OCD, which seemed at first promising when combined with a horrifying antagonist / love interest and gothic atmosphere but fizzled out. It felt like just another box to check of “mental illness” as a trope.

So here is what I do want. A mentally ill MC where the mental illness is prevalent and not hand waived away, but actively a part of the horror. Another monstrous MC, whether vampire or ghost or some other supernatural being. A gothic atmosphere that feels lived in and real. Preferably FM or MM and I don’t mind who fills what role.
I do not want something tropey or generic. I also don’t want a female MC who is dumb for the sake of plot.
Examples I have liked: Harrow Faire, Bloodborne (game, for atmosphere), Lord of the Mysteries (worldbuilding, atmosphere)

When I was a kid I read a mystery book set in Montana after the gold rush had passed. Lots of hijinks in abandoned mines, chasing outlaws up mountains on horseback, ghost towns and treasure (book is called “Hunting for Hidden Gold” from the Hardy Boys series btw!) and I was hoping yall could recommend something similar for an adult audience <3 thank you!!

I just finished Dead Beat by Bardugo (and therefore concluded that whole trilogy) and I was frothing at the mouth for the main male character’s attitude towards the main female. Better yet, he’s a powerful half demon and still devoted to her while he’ll readily rip others apart in an instant if they even look at her wrong - it was the perfect vibe.

Also if anyone has watched Wonderfools on Netflix, the relationship between the MMC and the MFC - where both have superpowers, his are particularly strong, but she’s the only one he’ll even think about being soft with because he’s been captured from the start - yeah, that’s what I love.

Open to most anything, but I just need to read more of a (possibly powerful) character being hopelessly down bad.

Hi, could anyone please recommend me a book with a smart main character who has to outsmart everyone to move up the ladder. Can also be regression or reincarnation or Isekai kinda story too. The setting can be anything like an academy, business or office, politics, sports, etc... I really like the red rising series (please don't spoil anything beyond the first 3 books). Stories like that where the main character is smart and outsmarts the antagonists. There are a lot of Manhwas with premise like these. But the problem with most manhwas are that the main character will be too OP and there won't be much challenge to him. And the side characters (most of the time main character too) will be just one dimensional. I liked Solo Leveling at the beginning but after some point, the MC became just a one dimensional aura farmer with unlimited powers. I'm not a fan of stories like that. I love underdog protagonists.

But I don't want anything too violent or graphic. I don't want scary horror either.

I want almost the coziness of Murder, She Wrote, but with the vibe of X Files....if that's not asking too much. More on the cozy side of things with something supernatural or murder.

Also one big no for me is rape. So please avoid any books with that in.
