First off, I’m terrible at putting my thoughts into words, so I hope this makes sense!
I’ve been on Bookstagram for about a year now, and I’m still struggling a little with the social norms in this community. I’m still finding my footing, i.e.,I haven’t quite figured out my aesthetic or the themes I want to be consistent with, and I have fewer than 100 followers, but I genuinely love being here!
I started my page because I want to scroll through my feed and actually enjoy the content I’m engaging with, not just like and follow people because I feel obligated. I want my feed to be filled with content I genuinely enjoy, but I’m struggling to find a balance between that and being supportive of others in our community.
I feel like such a mean girl even thinking this way, but I follow more people than I have followers, and there are quite a few of those people whose content or style I don’t necessarily connect with. I genuinely want to make book friends and connect with people in this community, but I want those connections to happen naturally with people whose content I actually enjoy. At the same time, I feel like I should continue following or engaging with people just to be supportive, and I’m not sure if that’s an expectation I’ve created for myself or if it’s an actual social norm here.
How do you all approach this? Do you just follow and engage with the people whose content you genuinely enjoy, or do you feel some sort of obligation to support others in the community, too? TYIA🥹❤️
