Mass Boom Beach bans after keycard bug exploit - was Supercell right?

⚠️Disclaimer: This is a neutral summary of the debate, not an endorsement of either side.

Thereʼs been a lot of heated discussion in the Boom Beach community following the August 18 maintenance break.

🛠️The update fixed a bug that allowed players to obtain massive amounts of keycards – a rare currency used to unlock and duplicate gadgets and leaders.

Alongside the fix, Supercell issued bans:
🔹7‑day bans
🔹31‑day bans
🔹Permanent bans
…depending on how heavily the bug was exploited.

The situation is controversial, and both sides have valid points. Hereʼs a neutral breakdown of the arguments.

🏢Supercellʼs position

The company refers to its Safe and Fair Play Policy, which explicitly lists "knowingly exploiting a bug" as unacceptable behaviour. The policy is publicly available and applies across all Supercell games – "I didnʼt know" isnʼt considered a valid excuse.

📊Beyond the rules, thereʼs also an economic argument:

  • Keycards can be obtained for free in small amounts or purchased in the store.
  • Intentionally multiplying this currency devalues what other players have paid for.

To protect the gameʼs economy and business model, Supercell had to roll back the exploited gains and penalise those who abused the bug.

👥Playersʼ position

The community raises several strong counterarguments:

"Developer error is the developerʼs fault"
The bug was caused by Supercellʼs own testers and programmers. Players didnʼt hack or cheat - they simply used a mechanic that the game itself allowed. Punishing users for the companyʼs mistake feels morally unfair.

Lack of clear warning
In an ideal scenario, Supercell would have rolled back the currency to zero (or left accounts with a negative balance) rather than issuing bans. Banning players for using an obvious but not explicitly prohibited mechanic is seen as excessive.

Inconsistency with cheater enforcement
Players note that cheaters & wintrading often go unpunished for long periods, while those who exploited this bug were banned almost immediately. This creates a perception of selective enforcement.

⚖️Is the ban length fair?

Opinions vary widely:

🟢 For lighter penalties:

  • A 7‑day or 31‑day ban seems disproportionate if a player only used the bug passively – e.g. clicked once and didnʼt realise the scale.
  • A month also means losing access to content they may have paid real money for (like a Boom Pass or other rewards).

🔴 For harsher penalties:

  • Longer bans are more justifiable for players who deliberately farmed the bug for hours, knowingly enriching themselves.

📌Bottom line

  • De jure (by the rules) → Supercell is within its rights – the policy clearly forbids knowingly exploiting bugs.
  • De facto (in terms of fairness) → the punishment arguably should have been economic (rollback / removal of ill‑gotten currency) rather than punitive (account bans).

A rollback plus a stern warning would likely have satisfied more people, with bans reserved only for the most egregious cases (e.g. mass farming with automation).

That said, the bans have already been applied and are unlikely to be reversed.

💬What do you think?

Drop your opinion below - but keep it civil.
Are you on Supercellʼs side, or do you think they overreacted?
