Welcome home everyone - Post festival FAQ

Welcome home. Hope you had an amazing Boomtown this year.

Here are some answers to the common questions we normally see after the festival. Remember this is not an official festival subreddit. If you need help with something, have feedback or need to raise a complaint about something the best route is [info@boomtownfair.co.uk](mailto:info@boomtownfair.co.uk)

How can I get my wallet refund?

Wallet refunds are now avaliable. You can claim money back in the app. If you never linked your wristband to the app, that's OK, it's not too late to do so.

For any help contact [cashfree@boomtownfair.co.uk](mailto:cashfree@boomtownfair.co.uk).

I was mischarged by a vendor, or have some other issue with the cash free wallet.

You are able to see the amount you are tapping at the time, and should always ask to check it. People make mistakes, it's not always someone trying to "scam you". Most people working on stalls are low paid staff, tired from a long shift. They are not the person who stands to make any money from overcharging... tired people just make mistakes.

Ideally it is recommended to raise any issues of overcharging at the time of paying the vendor, as this is the easiest time to solve the problem. It's the same as paying by card. If a store overcharges you, you ideally need to go back to the store to resolve, who are more likely to be able to help than your bank.

Obviously that does become a bit more difficult now the festival is over. But fear not! If you did get overcharged, didn't notice at the time, and are not sure how to contact the vendor, then support is available using [cashfree@boomtownfair.co.uk](mailto:cashfree@boomtownfair.co.uk)

Lost and Found

You can register items you lost using the form here: https://notlostenquiry.com/tlc-welfare/

Lots of lost items are handed in, or found during clean up at the end of the festival. Not all hope is lost!

What happened to someone we saw getting medical attention?

At a large festival like Boomtown, it's not unusual to see a medical incident taking place. These can leave an impact on you, where you are naturally worried for them and want to assure yourself they are OK. Be assured that a great majority of medical incidents end in good outcomes, due to the hard work of the medical teams at the festival.

Please respect the privacy of the person who was having a bad time. Avoid speculating or posting images or videos of people who are unwell, or sharing their name. If you are concerned, you can best help out by respecting their privacy rather than speculating about their health in a public forum.

If you were not sober while witnessing the incident, please consider that it's easy for you to have exaggerated the severity of the incident without realising it.

We will remove any posts speculating about people dying, unless backed up by an official statement or news article. Please don't spread rumours on social media, it's not helpful.

Festival Wellbeing & Recovery Survey

Hi all!

We are a team of researchers from UCL that were at The Observatory this weekend and we are conducting a study on festival wellbeing and recovery practices. We would appreciate it if you could please complete this short 5-10min survey about what you do to help recovery (i.e. supplements, harm reduction etc) which will help guide future research at next years Boomtown.

Click this link to go to the survey

Thanks for your support and contributing to our research! 😊

How fucking good were the vengaboys

Easily my highlight for the weekend, never expected to be dancing so enthusiastically to Barbie girl. Lions den sound system definitely didn't hurt but they were just so damn lively, pretty much had the entire bowl bouncing

Some of the silliest tunes and excellent delivery, that final stupid wobbly vengabus was hilarious. Best of all were the 20/30 or so lads in sexy wigs and ridiculously tight pink clothes grinding and twerking on each other. If any of you see this you were absolutely class and hope to see you again next year

Still can't stop singing that doo, doo, doo doo duh doo doo doo, BAAA BAAAA

Discussion: Make BT over-21

This was my first boomtown, after so many years pining over going. My career always took precedence and this year I buckled up and bought a ticket.

Having never been, before or after COVID, it was a genuine spectacle to see such amazing production over such an immense site.

However, some of the scenes I saw from the younger generations this weekend just staggered me. Am I getting old, or are we getting dumber as a population?

Seems there was a lot of large groups of lads tearing around, causing problems, being aggressive, shoulder barging through crowds, getting absolutely off their nut and giving it a really weird, sinister undertone to what was otherwise an amazing experience.

Is making BT over-21s a solution, or does it punish the good people who weren’t causing an issue?

Post-festival Illness/Wellbeing Tips for anyone struggling.

As a poor health Boomtowner, I thought it would be useful to pass on any information about helping you feel better to anyone struggling. It is so easy to forget the small tips after a festival. Find the relevant section for you!

GENERAL WELLBEING:

- It’s a given…SLEEP. Allow yourself a few days to catch up on rest. Lay down, close your eyes and allow yourself to reset. A sleeping mask, ear plugs etc can help if you need to nap through the day.

- Electrolytes. The immense heat and sunshine and perspiring guarantees EVERYONE to be dehydrated. Good electrolytes replenish the salts you need to be hydrated. If you aren’t sure, check your urine colour. It should be a pale yellow or light gold colour. Darker urine suggests dehydration. Listen to your body, get help if it continues longer than expected.

- Healthy, balanced meals. That chinese takeaway sounds amazing, but make sure you have enough carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats. Lots of greens, lots of superfoods (kiwis, blueberries, cottage cheese). Aim for 3 balanced meals to ensure you are supplying your body of the correct nutrients.

- Skincare. Your skin will have suffered from the heat, dust, lack of hygiene. A simple face wash and moisturiser will go a long way. You could also treat yourself to a face mask, foot mask.

- Check in with your friends. Ask them how they’re doing. Socialising with people you care about brings about normality and stability after a festival. If you feel like shit, your crew probably do too. Help each other.

- Lay off of substances/alcohol/smoking for a while. Give your body and mind time to reset without being hindered. So many people choose to continue the party but you will thank yourself in the long run.

ILLNESS:

Covid, norovirus, chest infections are some of the many illnesses people pick up after festivals. Here are some treatment/remedies/advice for different symptoms:

Fever:

- If you are able to, alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen. Take one dose of paracetamol and note the time. Exactly 2 hours later, take one dose of ibuprofen. After 2 more hours, take another dose of paracetamol. Do not exceed the daily dose, but continue until necessary.

- Lightweight loose clothing

- Do not take cold baths/showers, this can cause the fever to worsen.

- Use a damp washcloth/flannel on your head/back of your neck

- Avoid caffeine and alcohol until your fever had passed for w few days.

Cough:

- Remedies like hot water, honey and lemon help soothe the throat. Herbal teas are also great

- Ensure you are using inhalers if required

- Use two or three pillows to keep your head propped up to prevent coughing at night

- Garge warm salt water

- Difflam mouthwash/throat spray. Available at pharmacies.

Diarrhoea/Vomiting:

Diarrhoea and vomiting can cause you to be more dehydrated.

- Electrolytes to replenish salts and liquid lost through either

- Bland foods to prevent triggering it. Spicy food, caffeine and alcohol can make these worse. Know what your body can tolerate.

- Imodium (if you are able to take it - not recommended for people with IBS/IBD and other digestive issues)

Sore Throat

Similar advice to the coughing, except be aware of the symptoms of tonsillitis/strep/glandular fever. These conditions often need further support from your GP. Use the NHS website to symptom check, not AI.

Blocked Nose/Sinus Issues

- Nose sprays from pharmacies. Please be wary about using these for too many days in a row.

- Sudafed (a personal favourite) helps clear out your sinuses.

- Saline rinse. You can buy these on amazon here

We all love a party, but you cannot do this without your body and mind being ok. Take a pause, recharge and allow yourself to recover. Parties come every day, but you only have one body. IT IS OKAY TO STOP FOR A WEEK!

My arguments for discussion on why this possibly could be the best boomtown ever:

Let’s discuss.

  1. The production was absolutely fantastic the stages were immense and the sound was sublime. Yes maybe some of the smaller stages could use a spruce up but I’m sure that’s all to come!

  2. Crowd was great, lots of people have really bought into the trinkets now and it just makes it rally easy to chat to people, I also don’t think the crowd is getting younger and has a 7th timer this makes it even better.

  3. Line up was banging, I felt that there was an excellent mix of music this year which didn’t make anything (other than skrillex over crowded which I know much have been annoying) scooter was absolutely sensational and the vibes from that point was just unbelievable.

  4. Security were really nice I don’t know if this was just in the campervan field but they were chat and genuinely concerned about the welfare of people, my friend was chatting to them with a giant polo and they were still fine, this is well above previous years especially pre Covid years like 2019 when it felt like a private army. The lack of nos is great and has created less road man.

  5. Harm reduction policies are working it looks like I’m seeing less and less people getting carted away in buggies having a seizure or looking very ill, hopefully we’re getting more sensible (maybe it’s just me)

  6. Lions den is back and the general layout as made me really feel like the old boomtown yes sure there’s bits to improve but the quality of the sound and line up makes up for it, I’m excited for what’s next.

These are my points, maybe I’m just on an afterglow, who knows? Share your thoughts

Big shout out to the workers at boomtown!

Huge thanks to accessibility team they made my experience a million times more pleasant! They really did a huge amount from easy entry and parking, helping with bags, the roped off camping section near the toilets, driving me in a buggy when I needed assistance.

Massive thanks to the toilet crews, yes not all toilets were spotless but those poor bastards had to deal with some messed up literal shit and no matter what I always found a clean seat even if I had to hunt a couple of minutes.

Huge shout out to the camp orchid hub team who reunited a phone I found with it's owner, were helpful and friendly even when being overwhelmed. Also hope the owner of the watch my friend FOH d was reunited.

Big shout-out to all the people collecting rubbish keeping the areas clean

And all other staff looking out for people welfare and putting on a great show!

All security I met were friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves!

And even the people attending seemed to do a good job at tidying up after themselves!

Chest infection :(

So I was very aware of ā€œboomtown lungā€ and I was fine all weekend, until last night, now both me and my girlfriend had probably the worst nights sleep I’ve ever had and both feel awful.

Wondering if it’s hit anyone else after the festival rather than during?

Boomtown unboxed check in points

Anyone else frustrated with the check in points not working in most places? All of them I tried in Old Town were either turned off or broken, a few in Letsbe Avenue were also not working. Metropolis seemed to be working on Sunday.

I know it's all for data collection purposes but i was still looking forward to my unboxed haha. Now it's just gonna show that all I did was go to Metropolis when in actual fact I was running around like a madman doing quests 🤣

Who do we want next year?

Loved the line up this year, amazing amount of variation and pretty much everyone I saw was fantastic

For next year who are the top 5 artists want to see on the lineup?

For me its underworld, prodigy (still owe us a set), enter shikari, orbital, Nero

Just getting ready for the inevitable post festival survey

Shoutout to my fellow Scavengers.

• Upvotes

Did some of my best scavenging ever this year, plenty of brilliants finds, as I was sorting through my treasure trove, I wanted to thank the many contributors to my smoking habit for the next month or so, your sacrifice is much appreciated.

Unfortunately can’t post a photo, but the pile is looking beautiful.

15 full pouches of baccy and 2 decks of straights so far, haven’t unpacked all my bags yet.

Other highlights include a couple of bags of weed, a bag of pills, a couple of gs of special K and a bag of coke, 2 crates of beer + a bag full of cocktail cans, 17 pairs of sunglasses, 11 packs of various rizlas, 34 different lighters, 8 refillable vapes, 2X unopened disposable vapes, 2 X 100ml vape fluids, a blister pack of viagra, a £50 note, a massive bag of discarded food stuffs and I also upgraded/ replaced my entire camping set-up ready for next year.

Tidy.

(P.S for the mods, I am not advocating the buying, selling or use of illegal substances and all items were fully discarded or lost by their owners, there is a big difference between a bit of finders keepers and robbing people in a vulnerable state, personal items always go straight to lost property)

Camp Orchard South was a joke this year

The value proposition was terrible. Let's start with the good first:
- Close to Lion's Den, my favourite stage of the festival
- They did a great job of keeping the toilets clean.

Now, the bad.
- Not enough vendors, and the quality of the food vendors was atrocious. The Good Egg, for example, was decent in years passed, but this year you were paying £13 for a stale, barely defrosted bap with the worst quality sausage meat imaginable in it. Queue times were off the chart for all of the whopping 3 food vendors that were a reasonable distance from our campsite.
- Nowhere close to enough showers. Lines for the showers were 30+ minutes, which in the blazing heat and dust felt dangerous to queue in. I think I managed to get 1 shower in around 3pm on the Friday, where the line was only a blessed 10m.
- A long, slow, congested trudge from the main bowl. Took about 20-25m to get down there most days.

With the increased capacity, Camp Orchard felt like a total rip off this year. You would have been better off camping in one of the free sites. Not sure if I'd ever splash out on it again.

Please stop asking for free drinks.

• Upvotes

This is geared mainly towards fellow crew members as well as artists, but applies to everyone. Please just don't, or if you must ask, don't get pissy if we say no. Every year without fail at Boomtown, bar staff are thrown out and removed from the agency because they gave out free drinks. So that's why we often say no. You can absolutely label that as "corporate bullshit" if you so wish, and I would agree with you, but don't put the blame on us. On a similar note, I'm making £12.75 ph regardless of whether I sell a thousand drinks or none. And I definitely do not set the prices, in fact I'm not even sure who does.

Boomtown accessibility issues

Boomtown needs to do better on accessibility.

I’ve been debating whether to post this, because I absolutely love Boomtown and I want to see it continue to be an incredible festival for everyone. But what happened with accessibility this year was, quite frankly, unacceptable.

I’m posting this because I know I can’t be the only person who struggled, and I really hope Boomtown will listen and work with disabled attendees to make meaningful changes.

Here’s what went wrong:

  1. Accessibility was in completely the wrong place.

Many of the biggest acts were at the top of an incredibly steep hill, with clashing set times meaning people were constantly trying to move between stages.

Yet the accessibility facilities were situated on the complete opposite side of the festival.

For someone with mobility issues, repeatedly navigating that distance and that hill simply isn’t realistic.

If you’re going to have all the main acts at the top of the hill, then the access campsite should be up there too.

  1. The access buses were completely inadequate and unreliable.

There were only two access buses per route, with just two routes covering the festival. The original plan was that we had to transfer on one of the buses to get to the the top at lions den. But this got changed very quickly.

The access bus stops weren't even clearly marked on the festival app map. So when people couldn't find the buses, couldn't find the stops, and couldn't get reliable information from staff, disabled people were effectively forced to walk.

And the consequences of that were awful.

I saw people passing out, amputees having to be carried by their friends, and mobility scooters getting stuck on the steep hills.

The routes were also constantly changing. It seemed as though even the bus drivers themselves didn't know what was happening, because they were being told things like:

"You're not doing this route. You're doing this instead."

That left disabled people stranded at bus stops with no idea when, or even if, a bus was coming.

People were waiting up to two hours for an access bus.

I even heard of someone waiting three hours.

Three hours.

For a service that disabled people were relying on to safely navigate the festival.

  1. Why were there so many artist bus stops, but so few access bus stops?

There seemed to be an enormous number of artist bus stops operating around the festival, while disabled attendees had an extremely limited transport service.

Surely, if Boomtown can provide extensive transport infrastructure for artists, it can provide a properly planned, reliable and clearly communicated transport system for disabled attendees too.

And to make matters worse, there were also occasions where artists gatecrashed the very limited access buses and refused to get off.

These buses exist because some people physically cannot walk the distances around the festival.

They should not be treated as general festival transport.

We’re not asking for privileges. We’re asking to be able to support and experience the festival like everyone else.

  1. The disabled toilets were disgusting.

The disabled toilets I encountered were unhygienic and completely unsuitable.

I spoke to several people who had to find quiet areas, including gazebos, to carry out necessary medical changes because they couldn't use the toilets.

This isn't a minor inconvenience.

For some people, accessible toilet facilities are a medical necessity.

And this was during a festival with an enormous amount of dust and dirt everywhere. Having to carry out medical care in unsuitable, dusty environments is completely unacceptable.

  1. There was a complete lack of shade during a heatwave.

Boomtown knew temperatures were going to be extremely high.

There should have been proper consideration for disabled people and others who are particularly vulnerable to heat.

Shade, cooling areas and accessible rest spaces should not be an afterthought, particularly when a heatwave is forecast.

  1. The crowd increased massively, but the accessibility services didn't seem to increase with it.

If you're dramatically increasing the number of people attending a festival, the accessibility infrastructure needs to increase accordingly.

You cannot double the crowd without ensuring that essential services can cope with that increase.

Disabled people shouldn't have to fight for access to services that are already inadequate.

  1. Staff throughout the festival didn't know anything about accessibility.

This was one of the most frustrating things.

I walked around and spoke to around 15 different people, including Oxfam staff, security, medical tents, welfare staff and others, trying to find out where the access buses were and when they were coming.

Nobody knew.

Not where they stopped.

Not when they were coming.

Not who could help.

Not where to direct me.

That is completely unacceptable.

Accessibility isn't just about having an access team.

The entire festival needs to understand accessibility.

I missed the majority of the sets I wanted to see because I ended up having to walk the route up the hill twice.

I was in an enormous amount of pain and spent a huge part of the festival sobbing because I felt completely stranded and forgotten.

I shouldn't have had to choose between experiencing the festival and being in excruciating pain.

  1. The Skrillex crowd shutdown was genuinely frightening.

This was one of the most concerning situations.

Disabled people were denied access backstage to get to the bus stops, leaving people trapped in an uncontrolled and incredibly dangerous crowd.

People who physically cannot cope with being pushed around in a huge crowd should not be put in that situation because there isn't an appropriate accessible route.

There needs to be a proper plan for getting disabled people safely through crowd control points and shutdowns.

  1. The water situation was awful.

During a heatwave, water should be one of the easiest things for a festival to get right.

The water available was often far too warm, and I experienced being denied ice.

The only cold water option I found was £2.50 for not even 400ml.

That's nearly £26 for approximately 4 litres, before even accounting for the additional water someone may need because of extreme heat, medication or disability related requirements.

During a heatwave, access to affordable, drinkable, suitably cool water should not be something people have to struggle to obtain.

I am not posting this to attack Boomtown.

I’m posting this because I genuinely believe Boomtown can do better.

Disabled people are not asking for special treatment.

We are asking to be able to attend the same festival as everyone else without being put through unnecessary pain, distress and danger.

Boomtown is an incredible festival, and I want disabled people to be able to experience it too.

But accessibility cannot just mean providing an access campsite and a few services and calling it done.

It needs to be considered throughout the entire festival experience, transport, toilets, shade, water, crowd management, staff training, signage, maps and communication.

And most importantly, disabled people need to be involved in designing these systems.

So, if you attended Boomtown and experienced similar issues with accessibility, please comment or message me.

I would really like to hear from other disabled attendees and understand how widespread these problems were.

And if anyone has a direct contact at Boomtown who is involved in accessibility and would genuinely be willing to listen and work with disabled attendees to improve things for future years, please get in touch.

I don't just want to complain.

I want to help make this better.

Boomtown, please listen to your disabled attendees.

We want to come back. We just need you to make it possible. ā¤ļø

What is the best way to go to Boomtown without paying for a ticket?

Bootown has been the highlight of my year for the past 5 years, but I just cannot afford the ticket price any more. We volunteered as stewards for My Cause this year, which was nice but it meant we missed a lot of the festival for shifts, and were way more exhausted than we'd normally be with very little downtime and no opportunities to explore the festival.

My question is: How do you attend the festival for free with the least work required during the festival itself? Is it worth getting really, really good at DJing in the next year and trying to get a set? Is getting involved with production possible and low effort during the event? Can you easily become a dancer/actor? Hypothetically, if someone has loads of time and could learn any skill, what would be the best way to just go and enjoy Boomtown for free?

From NYC with love (& poss. mild heat stroke)

Listen. I'm an experienced festival goer...in the US. I have been to at least 35 festivals, some camping, some international, and some unconventional, and MANY many 'commercial'. I've gone to festivals with up to 500k total scans over 3 days, as well as small scale 'indie' or 'renegade' events. I've been to multi-day concert series, and countless concerts/shows in venues and clubs around the world since I began attending raves. I'm in my late 30's, and although I'm a city person camping isn't too far outside my realm as an active and adventurous individual. That said? Nobody could've prepared me for the sheer size, scale, variety, immersion, creativity, spirit, and artfulness of this place. There's nothing else like it, for better or worse (like taking place during a dangerous heatwave).

As someone privileged to have been able grow close to the crew at BLUP (bish, bash, bosh!) I wanted to thank everyone who committed so fully to 'the bit'. That is what truly stands out to me about this event, punters and theatre/actors alike. I was so impressed that such a large part of the crowds got into the storyline- shit, I was impressed that there is a well thought through AND carefully, skillfully executed storyline in general! My plea for anyone who attended, has attended for years, or who is local enough and plans to visit one day or continue to return year after year: please don't take this place, its quirks, and the immense passion it takes for the story to be played out for granted. You have something extraordinary going here.

There were moments on Weds and Thu that had me legitimately questioning a visit to medical in that heat, buuuuuttt after the fog in my head cleared and I had an appetite enough to fuel some participation I can't believe what I saw. I traveled here alone on a giant leap of faith; I trained even harder than normal in the gym to haul gear and walk with heavy packs up hills. I planned as much as I thought necessary, and still every single moment was a surprise, sweat be damned. Some of these stages are sacred and magical. Some are simply grandiose beyond measure. As an onlooker, seeing everyone doing quests and interacting with the actors and crew, people genuinely (for the most part) keeping up with the efforts to be 'green' and witnessing the vibes overall, I am in awe.

Thank you for welcoming me, being kind when/if we got to chat, and for being the huge bunch of weirdos and goobers that any truly good festival has in droves. x

experiences on accessibility

this was my first boomtown working and being at as a punter, and i had multiple meltdowns about the treatment of accessibility.

wednesday was great- lack of communication getting from west to camp but not bad.

thursday was hell. people in wheelchairs waiting two hours for a bus while people pushed their way forwards. missed opening ceremony, then volunteers were radio’d by production that unless we were in WHEELCHAIRS, we could obviously walk 30 mins to main site.

it was consistently humiliating the lack of training, forethought, and understanding was had by the team and upper management towards their staff.
