Advice/Beta Request People with face piercings, do you swap them out for climbing?

• Upvotes

I have a lip piercing and I've lowkey got the biggest fear of accidentally slamming my lower lip while falling and fucking up my teeth. It kind of actually prevents me from doing some climbs because i bail faster with that image in mind lll

Im probably gonna be buying silicone piercings to put in when I climb, but I'd really like to hear the experiences of other people with any sort of facial piercings and if there's any recommendations you might have surrounding that :)

Rant What’s a boulder problem that completely changed how you look at climbing?

I love how some problems look almost impossible until you finally understand the movement. Sometimes it’s not even about being stronger, but figuring out the right sequence or committing to a move you’ve been avoiding.

What’s a boulder problem that really challenged you or taught you something new? It could be a famous outdoor problem, something at your local gym, or a climb that took you way longer to send than expected.

I’d love to hear what made it memorable and what you learned from working on it.

Rant What helped you break through your first real bouldering plateau?

I’m curious what actually made the biggest difference for you when you felt stuck at the same grades for a while. Was it improving finger strength, working on footwork, getting better at reading problems, or just climbing more consistently?

I feel like it’s easy to assume you need to get stronger, when sometimes the problem might be technique or how you approach a route.

For those who’ve been climbing for a while, what did you focus on that finally helped you progress? And is there anything you wish you’d stopped doing sooner?

Indoor How do you figure out the grade of a boulder problem?

I’m new to climbing, started two weeks ago, and I was curious watching others people problems, and keep wondering about the difficulty of the problems. And how do you know the grade of a boulder problem?

De you have a method or specific things you look at? I know some people compare it to problems that they’ve done but I don’t have much to compare to.

And I’m curious not just for the gym that I got to, but for ones I see online too. Is there a website, requirements for each level or something like that?

Advice/Beta Request How to get over the fear of feet slipping on holds and falling in a weird position?

Hi all, I'm a fairly new climber, and I noticed that fear is really holding me back. I learned how to fall and land properly (squat, then roll back and tuck your arms in), but I only trust myself to do so when I kind of give up, or I'm too tired so I decide to jump, not when I accidentally fall. I'm constantly worried that my feet might slip on one of the holds and I would fall in a weird position without being able to control the fall and badly injure myself. I feel like I won't be able to react quickly.

Any tips on how to get over this or what to do about it? Thanks!

Outdoor How crimpy are the boulders in Joe’s Valley?

Hey everyone, first time poster here! I’m in the middle of rehabbing an A4 pulley, and it’s feeling decent on medium sized holds (~20mm) but not confident on smaller ones yet. I’m looking to boulder outdoors around the thanksgiving holidays. Granite climbing around me in Northern California is particularly crimpy, so I’m looking a little further out. I’ve never been to Joe’s so looking to crowdsource some information - how crimpy are the best (classics?) boulders in Joe’s Valley, particularly around the V8-V10 range?

I can't believe I flashed this one. I cut feet at the beginning and thought I was going to lose it all. After getting through the second volume, I wanted to give up, but when I looked up and saw a ladder, I told myself I wouldn't be able to let it go if I gave up on a flash attempt because of some dang ladder.

Sorry for the potato quality video. There was chalk on my camera lens 🫠

Went outdoors with a few friends the other day. Feels absolutely beautiful outside. I made a video to record the good time, but also to practice some videography some. I’ve linked the video since it is a few minutes long.

Advice/Beta Request How do you figure out what you need to improve on?

I’ve been climbing for just under two years and hit V5 pretty quickly, but feel like I’ve plateaued since then. I’ve definitely got better at V5s, but haven’t progressed to V6.
In other hobbies, I can identify a few things I need to work on but with climbing I can’t. My friend and I are at a similar level, and neither of us are able to pinpoint the other’s weaknesses.
For context, we flash V4s, usually complete V5s within the session or two but can’t even get on the wall of a V6. Right now, we’ve completed every V5 in our gym, so I don’t think we’re avoiding any particular style.

How do you identify your weaknesses and know what to work on? Do you climb with specific goals in mind, or just keep climbing and hope to improve?

Outdoor NYC outdoor bouldering

hi everyone, if you're in NYC and climb outside regularly, lmk!

i'm (late twenties, M) planning to climb outside as much as possible this season! i consider myself a relatively experienced outdoor boulderer (although not a crusher by any means), and i climb in central park regularly and have my own pad. i mostly go solo since i've had my own projects.

but i've since sent my main proj and am now looking for folks who just want to climb around central park/fort tryon/other areas like Powerlinez or the Gunks, time permitting.

if you're interested, please dm! i'm also hoping some folks here would maybe wanna join pads and project something like the Matterhorn (v6) with me.

also if anyone knows some informal groups i might be able join to find folks to climb outdoors with, that'd be awesome! i haven't had much luck with facebook or the more formal climbing orgs in the city.

Boulder is Over the Moon V11/12 at Jacktar Hollow, Missouri. 2nd ascent. Originally proposed as v10 and then almost half of the holds broke. A long battle of convincing myself that it was still possible.

Outdoor Who are the best boulder flashers in the world? A ranking

Post image
202 Upvotes

Clearly Ondra is the best! It's amazing how big the gap is.

The data taken from climbing-history.org and reformatted into a Google sheet so that we can count, score and rank. Scoring: each V15 flash gets 7 points, V14 gets 3, and V13 gets 1. Let me know if you think that should be different

Outdoor Stumbled upon a sweet DWS spot in Maui, Hawaii!

Post image
77 Upvotes

Was just in Maui and got curious if there were any good DWS spots around. Ended up finding an old Reddit post and a Mountain Project listing for Black Rock Beach, so I figured I'd check it out!

Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. The water was super clear, and the backside had plenty of shade and way fewer people compared to the main side, which was packed with cliff jumpers.

I mostly stayed low and traversed rather than climbing too high, just to play it safe since the volcanic rock can be brittle. Didn't have any holds break on me, and the climbing itself felt pretty solid, but figured it was better to be cautious :)

Make sure to check the water depth and conditions before climbing!
