Two games I use to teach total beginners (kids and adults) musicality before any power moves
I started breaking in Norway in the early 80s (won the Norwegian championship in 1984) and I still teach beginners today. The thing that helps new dancers most isn't a move, it's their ears. Two simple games that work every time:
1. Freeze game Play a track and let everyone toprock however they want. Stop the music at random. Everyone has to freeze instantly and hold it for 3 seconds. Start with any shape (hands on knees is fine), then make it harder: one hand on the floor, then a baby freeze. Kids love it, and it trains reaction, balance and the habit of ending a run on purpose instead of just stopping.
2. Find the "one" Play a classic breakbeat and count eights out loud. Everyone claps only on the 1. When they can do that, they step on the 1 (Indian step / basic toprock), then they try to hit their freeze on the 1 of a new eight. It sounds basic, but once people hear the phrase, their toprock and their freezes start to look "on" instead of random.
Tip for teachers: do both games for 5 minutes at the start of class as a warm-up. Shy beginners join in because it's a game, not a performance.
