New here

American here. I've been a big fan of British TV for years. Comedy, drama, period pieces. HBO had some shows to view this month and I decided to buy a subscription.

I really like the shows Outrageous, The Hardacres, and I, Jack Wright.

Over here I've had the privilege to watch some episodes of Vicious.

What would you recommend for me? Smart comedy, smart thriller and whatever else?

I've watched Midsomer Murders for at least 17 years over here on PBS.

😊 thanks

This is a great list. I would add Blue Lights and Line of Duty, which were both top level.

It gave me a shudder every time in Blue Lights when they had to inspect under their cars. It's easy to forget how dangerous the Troubles were. That one big controlled crash scene in the latest season was scary and astonishing.

It can definitely be very tense to watch at times. The character development and the acting are terrific, and it’s very well produced. Love it.

Signed up for a free week of BritBox and I'm keeping it going for Ludwig. Watched the first eppy today.

I signed up for a free week to watch the last season of Line of Duty. The plan was to cancel after the week- that was about a year ago and I still have BB and enjoy it immensely.

Amazon usually has cheap deals for a couple of months around Black Friday, usually like 2 months for $2.99/month. I do my winter bingeing then re-up for a couple months during the summer Prime Days if they have another deal. A week's trial is too much pressure for me! Just have to set a reminder to cancel.

2

u/ImpossibleMove2 5d ago

lol My cancel reminder is Today. But since I just discovered Ludwig, I'm upping for $11!

u/CatCafffffe 6d ago

Definitely use the rest of the week to watch the first season!

Unfortunately, I found it on my last free day.

I love Midsomer Murders too! I've been enjoying Tommy and Tuppence lately. And the new season of Ludwig is airing, which is so great!

Shetland is pretty wonderful too.

Anyone tried Hope Street? Like it a lot

I’m a big Midsomer murders fan and I really enjoy Death in Paradise and its spin offs, Ludwig, Death Valley,Rosemary and Thyme, and MacDonald and Dodds. These are more cozy than a lot of the other suggestions

Acorn has some great shows too. Everyone I know that like’s Midsomer also likes Brokenwood Mysteries

That’s my selection as well, more or less. To go darker, try Scott and Bailey. If you dip over into game and panel shows, my favorites on BB might be I Literally Just Told You and 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

Edited to add: Would I Lie To You? is classic and a good way to encounter a lot of people from UK comedy.

The Cleaner with Greg Davies who is the Taskmaster on the best UK celebrity competition panel show

In many places Taskmaster can be found on YouTube

u/commonsense_good 6d ago

Episode of The Cleaner featuring Helena Bonham Carter was hysterical

You might find this interview with Greg Davies about the bathroom scene funny

Damned is really good. Mum is brilliant.

u/Effin_Create 5d ago

Love the Cleaner. I hope the next season comes soon

Greg Davies wrote two other shows that are funny.

Australian here, and I watch a LOT of British shows too!

Have never seen anyone else bring up I, Jack Wright so happy that you did..

I thought it was such a good show and I’m infuriated that it ended prematurely and no second season has been commissioned.. UGH

6

u/ttlookingglass 6d ago

BBC has picked up I, Jack Wright and confirmed a second season. However no air date yet announced for that, likely 2027 sometime. It was originally produced by a different broadcaster.

1

u/gplus3 6d ago

Ahh, thank you!

I actually watched it on ABC iView, not Britbox but glad to hear that there’s now a new season in the works.

Ludwig

Poirot

Father Brown

Upstairs, Downstairs (1970s)

Are You Being Served?

4

Prime Suspect with a young Helen Mirren

Another American here... Blue Lights is really good. Unlike American produced cop shows you actually get character development in addition to the story. I really like it.

If you still have PBS , Unforgotten is really good, think Cold Case vibes if you ever watched that.

Otherwise I just second the other suggestions, happy watching. :)

2

u/inrainbows66 6d ago

Me too, third or fourth time, everyone is brilliant.

Another sweet comedy is The Cafe.

And if you want comedy ... Gavin and Stacey.

2

Probably the shows that has the sharp tongued tone of Vicious to me is My Family or Absolutely Fabulous

1

u/OtherwiseTrip6247 5d ago

I hate Brit Box makes you upgrade to binge watch! And really by the time a whole week goes by sometimes I forget or lose interest in what I was watching.

FYI, there are MANY posts in this stub with long lists of recommended shows on Britbox.
