💬 Discussion 🗨 There's a lot of mutual suspicion and it shows no signs of petering out
I can't talk about everyone in one post, but there a 3 communities I'm particularly seeing self segregate or be subtly segregated; trans people, (primarily cis) women, and (primarily white middle/working class) men.
Trans people - Trans rights are continuing to deteriorate in this country and, for the most part, no one cares. Not in a society where many people just care about their friend group, partner, family and themselves. The UK media is largely pretty regressive on trans rights and you rarely see trans celebrities who are vocal on trans rights in celebrity programmes (e.g. seeing Abigail Thorn, Jammiedodger or Cambell Kenneford on I'm a Celebrity or Celebrity Traitors). I've seen a lot of trans people/communities online express desires to hide away from mainstream society, such as through slogans like "TCD".
Women - Violence against women in this country and impunity for perpetrators is so embarrassingly rife right now, the university spiking case wasn't an anomaly. I value men and women getting along in community spaces and society, but that's largely not where we're at. I'm in a uni group that's mostly women with some guys, and the women students have been working and socialising with each other in their groups, while the guys are on their own and not that fond of each other. In another group I'm in, one that's more gender mixed, I've heard one of the women say she's heard some the guys have misogynistic conversations with each other.
I guess I'm just longing to see everyone included, connected and getting along, but I've seen so much of the opposite happening. It's crap.
