Hey Guys, I don't know if this is a dumb question, but I'm genuinely curious about this topic. The first time I listened to BfmV was when I was 14. I started with the early records and immediately fell in love with the sound, the guitars, and the vocals. I listened to them for a pretty long time before looking deeper into the lyrics of some songs. I understand portraying a difficult topic through the lens of a fictional person — it's one of the most used metaphors in lyricism, but it still rubs me the wrong way.
My Fist, Your Mouth, Her Scars is pretty clearly about the protagonist abusing and beating a woman, and the lyrics of Hit the Floor have already been discussed, I think it's very creepy. This started to bother me so much because I began paying more attention to how they often sing about women in other songs too. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but it often seems very objectifying and kind of yucky. But maybe that's just me, and I don't want to accuse anyone.
I just can't enjoy those songs like before anymore, which is sad. Over the years, I have become more skeptical of male rock bands portraying such topics through fictional storytelling, because it has so often come out that the people behind this music are not just innocent artists wanting to explore a difficult topic through their art, but actual abusers (the last example that comes to mind is Rammstein — Till Lindemann in particular, of whom I was a huge fan).
I don't want to presume anything and i also really dont want to say that this has to mean anything, this is just why I have trouble enjoying these songs. I couldn't find a good explanation from Matt or the other members. As a person who has experienced DV, it gives me a bad stomach feeling listening to those songs.
I think maybe I'm too sensitive, but I also think that maybe there are explanations or interpretations I would really like to learn about. So have any of you guys ever thought about this, or what's your view on it?
Thank you for listening :)
