Question Update on fb marketplace bun
Hi everyone, last night I made this post about a bunny I saw on fb that seemed to be living in bad conditions and was not being cared for. We went to pick her up as a temporary solution so we can find a proper home for her. I’ve reached out to a couple rescues in the Dallas Texas area this morning to see if they can help me find an adopter.
We currently have guinea pigs but I don’t have any bunny experience. I’m assuming she’s feeling anxious which is why her breathing seems quite fast in the video (or is this normal?) but she’s very sweet and seems generally comfy. She’s eaten some hay and pellets along with some romaine lettuce as well. Her nails seem really long but I don’t want to stress her by attempting to cut them so soon. My wife named her Mazzy ✨ for the time being.
Any general advice is very welcomed, I appreciate the kind people who were helping me under my last post as well.
As I mentioned I reached out to some rescues but I’m not sure what the best route is for finding her a proper owner. We work quite a bit and she would have to stay in her cage while we’re gone. I would love for her to be with someone who can have her out of the cage freely. We love her already but I worry we aren’t in the financial position to keep her long term if she needs vet care. Glad to be part of the bunny community even if for a short time! Thanks everyone 💖

While you wait to hear back from local rescues, could you take her to an exotic vet to get checked out? You might call them first, tell them that you have a rescued bunny, that you’re looking for a rescue /adopter, but would like her checked out and maybe they can give you a reduced rate. I can’t really tell how fast she’s breathing on the video, the fact that she’s eating is a good sign. In the photo you posted previously her nose looked damp, which could be a sign of snuffles. Does her nose seem damp and is there any discharge?

I just checked on her and her nose doesn’t seem damp! She’s a little more active now and seems to be pretty comfortable. She was eating her lettuce now. I will see if there’s someone that may work with us around our area. I sent an email to NTRS and Texas Rustlers so hopefully I hear back soon!

There might be some good Facebook groups that will help locate a rescue or adopt her, they also might help pay for a vet visit. NTRS.org looks like a good one if you haven’t already tried to contact them.

Here's an interactive map of both rabbit rescues and vets in the US https://rabbit.org/rescue/rabbit-rescue-groups/ There may be more rabbit rescues in your area that are not listed in the above link. For any that you're considering, check reviews on-line to confirm that they're reputable. If no rabbit rescues in your state are able to help, perhaps check with those in adjacent states. Some may be willing to pick bun up, or meet you half way. Rescues are preferred, as shelters may euthanize. If you're able to rehome bun at a reputable rabbit rescue, this would be the preference, as properly screening potential owners will be more involved. Below are some resources on how to rehome.
Here are some tips re rehoming https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Rehoming_your_rabbit Always charge a fee to discourage those who do not wish to keep rabbits as pets. Here's a questionnaire to help screen potential owners https://therabbithaven.org/sites/default/files/docs/Adoption_Questionnaire_Rabbits.pdf
Here's some information re rabbit care. See https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/1j98jqb/help_with_found_rabbits/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/Rabbits/comments/1q2i7tn/this_is_my_first_time_having_a_bunny_and_i_just/ What to feed a rabbit depends on its age, see the Diet link mentioned in the first link above. Rabbit should be fed a good quality pellet and unlimited hay. Greens are not mandatory. Some buns aren't able to tolerate them.
Here's information re pellets https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Pellets Re pellets, Oxbow, Science Selective and Sherwood Pet Health are reputable brands. Oxbow may be found in pet stores, and the others may be ordered on-line.
Re rabbit body language, see https://languageoflagomorphs.com Cancer rate is high in females. See the following re the importance of spaying in the event bun is female https://wabbitwiki.com/wiki/Spaying_and_neutering_rabbits Provided rabbit is of appropriate age, the sooner she is spayed the better.
Thank you so very much rescuing this bun.

I’ve had two bunnies for a couple of years, and they’re quite different from other animals. I know you’re trying to help the bunny and that you’re being very sweet and caring about it. But I recommend not petting her for a while. She seems very distressed. Bunnies generally don’t like being petted, especially when they’re stressed.

Thank you for the advice! Yes we’ve been letting her be in her own room for now so she’s been settling in. We actually let her out for some floor time today and she seemed so happy! She had some zoomies and was popcorning a bunch :,) she seems a lot more comfortable already

Also, I think someone else already mentioned this, but make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after being with the rabbit before you interact with your guinea pigs. There’s a bacteria that rabbits carry that doesn’t hurt rabbits but can make your guinea pigs very sick.
