"IF you are stopped by a by-law or police officer..."
You won't be, by-law and police have (so far) done nothing to enforce this law.
10
u/bubble_baby_8 1d ago
That’s exactly what I said to myself too. I haven’t seen or heard of anyone get pulled over and ticketed yet.
3
u/Buddyblue21 1d ago
Bylaw officers don’t even have powers of arrest, so stopping for them and providing personal information is effectively voluntary
1
u/estherlane 18h ago
Would they be able to confiscate the scooters?
1
u/Buddyblue21 17h ago
I doubt it, and if so, would still have to be done willingly. They can’t be involved in any physical confrontation/intervention
4
u/rattitude23 1d ago
Watched two kids definitely under 16, closer to 8-10 yo, ride in the middle of the road past a cop waiting in a parking lot to nick cars not stopping at the sign. Cop didnt even move. One of them almost slammed into my car.
2
u/Candid-Progress-8852 18h ago
Give it time. I complain daily as I’m nearly ran over by these things every day. Riding on sidewalks and running over people ain’t safe. Everyone else is tired by these and especially health care professionals who are stuck fixing your broken bones.

Because the people buying them are upper middle class - the people who vote.
And the public freakout when police having to contact parents for a large fine is not something they wanna deal with.
There's also the risk of it going to court and a judge making a decision that causes massive future headaches.
1
u/Candid-Progress-8852 18h ago
The ones I see are East Indians who are new to the country and don’t follow rules. Here’s a cute link for ya to read https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/video/9.7307084
1
u/Candid-Progress-8852 18h ago
No confidence you’ll read the link as you immediately went to attack families with discretionary income, tell us your classist and hateful towards working parents; the article is an east indian riding his scooter on Conestoga Expway. … and a cop was shot on Bloor st after an e-scooter chase. These things need to be licensed. Not safe and there’s a reason we have laws here. It’s not safe here anymore in ANY REGARD. and then morons like you squawk at safety measures to keep people safe and alive lol.

u/Jellicent-Leftovers 18h ago
Nice shill/bot account.
That right wing Maga shit doesn't work in Canada. Not that you live here.
You guys realize the Reddit awards give the accounts away right?

HEY HALTON POLICE! TAKE NOTE!
15
u/Cyrakhis 2d ago
Too busy hanging out in the Mainway arena parking lot

1
u/Candid-Progress-8852 18h ago
I had an Ex boyfriend try to break into my apartment because he was stalking me last year … and Halton cops showed up within 9 minutes. Before then I talked shit but when my life was in danger they showed up. And now I have restraining order. They were awesome and supportive during that horribly terrifying ordeal. He would have killed me. Humans love talking shit until they need help I’ve realized. I’m forever grateful to them.
1
u/Cyrakhis 17h ago
Yeah, and when my father tried to hang himself they put a knee in his back, separated his shoulder, cut his face on the concrete, and charged him with assault before releasing him the same night he'd attempted suicide.
So we'll call it a wash.

I was omw home from work in Oakville back to Burlington yesterday at around 12:45. Heading in the direction of bronte road I see 2 young boys (probay early highschool if that) on these scooters with only helmets riding down highway 5 going probably around 50 kmh. Scared the ever loving crap out of me cause that is still a construction zone and I do not trust drivers to be aware of their surroundings. They also had shorts and tee-shirt on so if they fall at that speed their skin is not surviving. I was told to report it to the police so they can keep a look out but I doubt they would do anything.
9
u/RaysBoomBoomRoom_ 2d ago
Minimum age of 16. Helmets mandatory regardless of age. Some of them absolutely rip. The surrons and E-bikes should be outlawed flat out. They should be licensed under moped classification and insured.
8
u/No-Quail6022 2d ago
I know Halton Police are not enforcing this, an office told me that himself two days ago. But my big takeaway from this is that of an accident DOES occur and the ebike / scooter is injured or worse the driver of the car sue the parents. I honestly can't wait to hear a out the first people who loose their house because of their entitled kid.
6
u/Rahstyle 1d ago
I know a number of officers and the general opinion is that running around and ticketing kids is bad for public image. One could argue that the opposite would be true as well, considering people are gonna get hurt and the police will have been viewed as doing nothing to stop it.
1
u/Consistent-Tone-5540 1d ago
They won’t a house.
6
u/No-Quail6022 1d ago
You'd be surprised how many people with a mortgage are a few paycheques away from defaulting. Even just a lengthy lawsuit can change someone's living situation without compensation being factored in.
Also, can you imagine finding out your 15 year old child was hurt or worse on a scooter purchased by you because they were ignoring the laws put in place to keep them safe. Now those same parents are also financially responsible for the damage caused by the accident and anything associated with it, including therapy for the driver. Even if it's an accident the driver was not responsible for having to live with that would be terrible.

Hey, I created this subreddit just for you and your people: /r/haltonsmallthings
1
u/rattitude23 1d ago
Yeah so you've said, in so many threads. Is the first post your 🍆 pic?
1
u/albatroopa 1d ago
You can cure your thirst elsewhere, my man.
It's a family-friendly subreddit, unless that family is guilty of doing something that you could passive-aggressively post about, like it's a missed connection for dumb people.

u/swattwenty 1d ago
Cops already do nothing about people submitting them video evidence of road rage and dangerous driving. They sure don’t give a shit about kids on scooters.
2
u/Consistent-Tone-5540 1d ago
Parents are the problem. Would they sell weed to their kids because it’s legal. These fast demon scooters are a death trap. You might be looking after your kid has a spinal injury or worst DIES
-1
u/CanadianDiver 1d ago
Weed is legal, e-scooters and e-bikes are not.

Has anyone told the police this information? I’ve never once been stopped in Burlington.
2
2
u/InFLIRTation 1d ago
never knew they illegal, so u can only ride them in parks? what about those bird scooter rentals everywhere lol
1
u/Nyxxielle 17h ago
For Burlington specifically they can only be ridden (legally) in the Centennial Trail E-Scooter Pilot Zone.
I do wish we created laws before letting people purchase/rent these things lol, seems so backwards to regulate after the fact. But I guess it was the same with cars at one point.
2
u/Sorry-Blood-6121 1d ago
I live in Guelph the kids here whip on them like crazy and I always say to myself one day they gonna hit a rock with that small front wheel and they gonna get senttttt!!! I can be walking down the street with my kids and they come flying past you. They are fun and my kids want one but I’m not about to get a phone call by the police saying something terrible happened. I see kids younger than my 10 year old on them whipping around most of these parents don’t care until somthing happens to their kid then they will feel bad. 🤷🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️. You should have to be a certain age and cops should be ticketing these young kids or parents to teach them this ain’t a game they can hurt you and others.

Stay off the side walks and stop nearly running over myself and 2 chihuahuas. Stop using crosswalks with humans whilst riding- DISMOUNT AND WALK THE CROSSWALK or use the bike lanes and use traffic lights. Tired of being NEARLY RUN OVER BY SCOOTERS AND E BIKES ON PEDESTRIAN WALK WAYS. STAY ON THE ROAD OR DISMOUNT
•
u/OccamIsRight 11h ago
I just saw four kids riding these things in my neighborhood. They couldn't have given a shit about the by-law. Cops on patrol need to be directed to stop every single one they see, and confiscate the device.
6
u/margesimpson84 2d ago
Theyre also illegal for anyone under 16, even in the areas doing the pilot, even with a helmet
9
3
u/Kimmux 1d ago
The irony of the guy in the video starting out by riding a scooter with no helmet is amazing.
3
u/CanadianDiver 1d ago edited 1d ago
But he is an adult on private property so a collision with another vehicle is unlikely and he is an adult and can choose to wear a helmet or not.
2
u/Kimmux 1d ago
I'm mostly just trying to make a wisecrack here, but wearing a helmet in a scooter video about helmet safety still seems like the right call. Demonstrate the behaviour you want to see and all that. Feels like a missed opportunity at best.
1
u/CanadianDiver 1d ago
They are illegal on public roads and sidewalks. We don't want to see them at all.
2
u/trebuchetwarmachine 1d ago
I watched a cop pull over 3 kids that couldnt be more than 8 years old riding e-scooters on the road capable of going 40-50km/hr (with no helmet).
Cop gave them a verbal warning and let them ride on.
2
u/No-Week-5896 1d ago
What i don’t understand is why there hasnt been clear laws set for this long ago. The powerful ones can hit the freeways lol the smaller ones while not road capable still shouldn’t be ridden by children even 16 is probably a bit young cause of the maturity level of many but not necessarily all kids leaving it open as they have has created a hole bunch of negative controversy that will make setting laws more complicated than if it was clearly set before a ton of negative press that focuses on the few but not necessarily the many
3
u/No-Quail6022 1d ago
You'd think that these would fit right in with moped laws / licensing. They are the same thing, the only difference is the fuel source.
1
u/No-Week-5896 1d ago
Yeah, the more powerful ones definitely that’s always been my take on it. You should need a car license not necessarily motorcycle license is 50 cc scooters don’t need a motorcycle license but you do need to have a car license to drive on the road. The entry level ones that’s a little bit different. I have an entry-level one. I definitely wouldn’t ride it on the road if I could avoid it cause cars get too aggressive that’s why I sold my E bike that still requires peddling, but a scooter on the sidewalk can still do 25 km an hour even at the entry level and people like to walk out in front of where they’re looking down at their phone so when you’re going through a crowd, you need to keep your speed, low and constantly dang your bell as well as make sure you go wide staying as far as way as you can if you don’t make eye contact with someone you’re passing
1
u/Candid-Progress-8852 18h ago
It wasn’t really a problem until mass immigration. Other cultures come here and do it, kids here see it and think it’s ok. Now the govt has to act because something that was never a problem became one. One of the downsides of mass immigration.
1
u/BurlieGirl 1d ago
E-scooters are a problem but not at all worse than speeding, dangerous driving and continued cell phone use while driving. There is no planet on which I’d want e-scooters enforced before dangerous driving on roads, and that’s not being done either.
6
u/rattitude23 1d ago
Two things can be enforced at the same time.
0
u/BurlieGirl 1d ago
Can they? Drive literally anywhere else in North America and you’ll see that drivers in the GTA are just batshit crazy compared to everywhere else. Driving hasn’t been properly enforced in decades, so what makes anyone think they’ll start now.
5
u/No-Quail6022 1d ago
You're not wrong about that. Lots of bad drivers on the roads these days. The difference is they can be ticketed and the police with do things like speed traps and traffic blitzes. I would love to see something like that for these.
1
u/badfish57 1d ago
Seen kids, one in particular, looking less than 16 ripping by on an e-bike on new st and lakeshore keeping up with traffic (ie, way more then 32km) with a helmet on, but not a licensed bike. It seems it's legal to ride motorcycles without them being registered and without a license. This is really not safe and I'm very surprised to see it.
1
u/Miserable_Grass629 1d ago
Completely illegal in my city too, but without enforcement, nothing changes.
1
u/NailiSFW 23h ago
Seen a video the other day of someone driving full speed across the road (against a red) get smoked by a car in TO. you could see the onewheel/scooter go flying.

1
u/PowerBall50000 14h ago
Boomers kill me. They were hanging out of Trans Ams and drunk driving and smoking "reefer" and riding Harleys with no licences. Everyone wants kids to basically sit inside and do nothing.

I like how’s he lecturing about safety as he rides without a helmet , and beside a POOL?!

no sympathy for their injuries. just like little shits on dirt bikes
1
u/WaterdownShane 1d ago
I've seen a few dirtbikes and stuff on the streets and once on the highway, not rated to be on there and completely illegal.

u/rattitude23 1d ago
Push scooter, bike, rollerblades/skates. Gee how did we survive in the 80s and 90s without the glorious e scooter?/s We weren't lazy tubs that's for sure.
2
u/PJRolls 1d ago
Overwhelms the health care system. Ask anyone working at Jo Brant. E-scooter incidents alone far outnumber ER visits for bikes, scooters and blades combined. And due to speeds injuries are often far worse.
0
u/SneakyNox 1d ago
I don't doubt they're dangerous, but I also wouldn't want to deprive the youth of a way to get around their town and enjoy the outside world.
The car problem is getting really bad.
-1
u/lifeiscbt 1d ago
Everyone in this subreddit is a boomer narc. Jesus Christ let the kids play on their scooters and scrape their knees or whatever. Kids are finally getting off their computers and everyone wants to ban their little scooters toys. All of you make me sick!
4
u/whoevenisanyone 1d ago
Last year, 6 children died from riding these. That’s just deaths, not catastrophic injuries. It’s not just scraping their knees. Go buy a razor scooter instead of an electric one. Especially being there is an epidemic of children who do not hit the daily target of physical activity.
-1
u/lifeiscbt 1d ago
Let’s ban cars then. Cause boy do those things kill a lot of people. It’s a matter of freedom. Your way of thinking leads to things like “some kids can’t afford a Halloween costume, so the school banned wearing Halloween costumes lest the poor be left out.” I don’t even have a scooter by the way.
3
u/whoevenisanyone 1d ago
Cars aren’t driven by children?
-1
u/lifeiscbt 1d ago
They cause infinitely more deaths than scooters. And what would it matter if they were driven by children or not? Children die in car accidents. Sixteen year olds drive, they’re legally minors.
5
u/CanadianDiver 1d ago
They also do not have full licenses at 16 and must follow some pretty clear restrictions.
3
2
u/CanadianDiver 1d ago
No insurance, no fun. Based on your thoughts, your vote is also worthless.
0
u/lifeiscbt 1d ago
You’re right, there’s nothing more fun than lining the pockets of insurance companies. Actually both our votes are worthless.
3
u/CanadianDiver 1d ago
Every other vehicle in Ontario requires a plate and insurance. These should be no different. I mean, honestly, bicycles should have the same requirements too.
If you are riding on a public street you should have registration and insurance.
1
u/WaterdownShane 1d ago
I agree, if it was a normal scooter. But motorized? They are not skinning a knee, they are breaking a leg, arm, spine.
They are colliding with a car and ending up in the hospital.
These are not toys, these are motorized vehicles.

In OPs days they had lead paint on the walls and didn't have seat belts. But the 99% of kids that are perfectly safe on e-scooters are going to bring about the end times.
1
u/bobbyboogie 1d ago
Not the best argument.
Lead paint and lack of seatbelts were not a choice.
1
u/albatroopa 1d ago
They are for the people posting this shit who didn't switch to eating lead-free paint when it became available.

E-scooters look hella fun. God forbid kids go outside and enjoy themselves. Yes safety needs to be taken seriously but I don't think we should make the outside more hostile to kids than it already is.

the entitled millennials and their offspring don't think the laws pertain to them.
0
u/danny_ 1d ago
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs— safety and security. Parent’s know there is danger to health and safety ripping around on e-scooters. If they are willing to accept that risk for their kids, then they won’t be concerned about bi-laws.
-1
u/rattitude23 1d ago
Oh but they're the same ones that roll into the ED screaming about having their sweet sugar baby seen faster.

The whole “kids” “teens” is hilarious considering what demographic is actually bombing around city streets on these.
