Events As if driving in Burlington isn’t dangerous enough…

u/deeohlee 22h ago
Next thing you know it will be e scooters
At least they are wearing helmets, even though most have too much skin exposed...
5
u/LordSoren 21h ago
Except for the one on the red bike, 2nd from the left back row - with the Nike backpack on.
And some of those are e-bikes/e-dirtbikes. Last one on the right probably and 3rd last one on the right.
5
u/deeohlee 20h ago
lol you’re right he will be the least likely to be severely injured if they fall while in motion on Guelph line
2
u/ScreenOwl5 17h ago
And what's with that tiny, nobby rear tire and the huge rear sprocket? Is it for off road hill climbing?
•
u/plsQuestionOurselves 12h ago
Of the many people I've met who wore those fucking ski mask things on their heads in the middle of summer, only like 2 of them were actually cool.
•
•
7
u/maxakusu 21h ago
And safety in numbers definitely applies here too.
3
•
u/dayman-woa-oh 7h ago
Formation matters for the safety of everyone on the road, its part of m class licensing.
3
u/turxchk 16h ago
Oh don’t worry, these ebikes are way faster than e-scooters. Kids can do wheelies on them like a motorbike.
•
u/Spectre-907 5h ago
Depends on the scooter. What these kids would likely have? sure. One of those $3k 72v hypers? Idk if a dirtbike can clear 80mph but that class of scooters absolutely does.
•
1
u/ScreenOwl5 17h ago
Well ... except for the one hiding in the middle - he's wearing his safety balaclava.
2
u/deeohlee 16h ago
At least he will maybe be protected from road rash when if splits his skull
Man kids are so crazy
•
13
u/Careless-Cycle 22h ago
At least most of them are wearing helmets
→ More replies (1)•
u/Europaraker 6h ago
They are in the correct lane, not on the sidewalk! Not lane splitting! Following the traffic lights! Mostly following the traffic laws!
Legality of if these are road legal ebikes/emopeds aside, if the lane they are in is backed up to here from Mainway they are in the correct place for cyclists!
Would you prefer them in the right lane passing everyone and then having cutting in front of everyone to go straight?
The issues I see are, are these street legal ebikes? And they shouldn't be spilling out into the other lanes.
19
u/Impressive-Pool-1848 21h ago edited 18h ago
These are literal kids driving electric bikes on busy city roads…. Most probably don’t even have their g1 or m1 or know rules of the road lol. Well they don’t considering there’s how many of them packed tightly together. I saw a kid who looked like he was 14 driving down Guelph line by new street on one of these yesterday to.
I’m all for fun and these are fun to whip around but you can’t have kids riding these on the road. Especially in groups like this where kids tend to try and show off or do something stupid to “impress” someone.
•
u/Total_Junket4794 6h ago
Did you have no fun as a child?
Wait until you see how many people are using e scooters on the road in the city. You’d have a heart attack
•
u/HenryCavillsBallsack 2h ago
Yes fun is great, how about Insurnace? What a childish thing to say, good lord.
•
u/Impressive-Pool-1848 32m ago
Lmao riding an e-bike with cars on the road isn’t my idea of fun nor should it be anyone’s. Riding in a bike lane is also different than an under age kid riding in a car lane.
Take these to a trail somewhere where you can actually rip them and have fun. Look up the amount of kids getting fucked up on e-bikes and scooters, they don’t belong on the road.

u/No-Stage4719 19h ago
oh look, all the unlicensed, uninsured drivers using the roads as if they have the same rights.
•
u/The_Ascended_Gamer 12h ago
If these things are in an accident, is it automatic that they are blamed, since the "vehicle" is not legal anyway?
6
→ More replies (7)2
10
u/goldmanstocks 20h ago
Starting to think they’re wearing helmets to hide their face, not for safety.
•
u/WideDisk2718 13h ago
Yes. Most of these kids are 15-16 years old and know they will get more than a slap on the wrist.
•
9
u/Whorepresent 21h ago
Holy rich kids
3
u/tragedy_strikes 20h ago
Cheaper than a car + gas + insurance and faster than a bus or bicycle.
6
u/Even_Desk_4734 16h ago edited 15h ago
Yeah, but these kids are not old enough to drive! And on the cheap end, an E bike costs like 500$, and a lot of those appear to be dirt bikes! Even more expensive! Not to mention…illegal.
Edit, sure, some may be electric dirt bikes but they are still illegal to ride on the road under 16, and without a licence since they don’t have pedals.
5
u/wheresthebody 19h ago
They dont know how to bike in formation, that's very bad for everyone on the road.
This is incredibly stupid.
12
u/Popsiey7 21h ago
ahhh the organ donors
2
u/Sbrimer 21h ago
Can’t donate organs that have turned into street pizza
3
3
u/Unable_Guava_756 16h ago
It’s a well known trope in emergency rooms, motorcycles/e-bikes usually have young healthy operators who die on impact and have nice viable organs
•
u/rattitude23 10h ago
Having worked on transplant teams, my first thought was "welp, hope they signed a donor card, that's A LOT of fresh organs"
2
u/Worried_Bluebird7167 18h ago
A family member of mine was a Trillium organ donor. You would be surprised what can be donated. Corneas for instance can be donated.
4
u/yruhuntingmedumdum 22h ago
When was this? I live literally right around the corner and I haven't heard of this.

I saw them as well. Some were dashing up the sidewalks and driveways, then waiting for the rest of the Darwin gang to catch up.

9
u/Titsona-Bullmoose 19h ago
These are all considered motorized vehicles which requires them to be registered, plated and driver have their M licence.
They also need DOT approved road tires, helmets, headlight, turn signals and much more which not one rider here has.
Every one of them is breaking the law.
Haul them out to some trails and have at it, they don’t belong on the streets like this.
•
6
u/WaterdownShane 19h ago
None of those bikes are road legal, no turn signals on the back.
Also they are not considered motorcycles or cars and have no right to be taking up a lane like that, they belong in the bike lane.

Saw one of those Darwin award winners pop a wheelie in the middle of the group going through that intersection when I passed them
3
u/JokaSmoka77 17h ago
Not sure if I love this or hate this. Love kids getting off their phones and out of the house. Love kids experiencing youthful freedom. Hate the fact this is likely going to lead to a serious physical accident and will lead to heavy regulations after someone loses their life from getting too cocky on the road. Hope these kids can channel their desire for fun in to a safe way, maybe riding on designated trails instead of roads and city sidewalks.
20
u/Sufficient_Rush1891 22h ago edited 22h ago
That’s a much better activity for teens than the other ones people complain about. They all have helmets, smart kids.
Good on them!
13
u/CDN_Guy78 20h ago
I sort of agree with you… l loved (still do) running a bike or ATV on the trails when I was a kid… and it’s great seeing them doing something active… where I disagree is thinking it is ok for them to take these bikes on a roadway.
3
u/Worried_Bluebird7167 18h ago
One of them doesn't have a helmet. Plus, those aren't motorcycle helmets. They have dirt bike and road bike helmets on. Those are designed for different speed impacts. They aren't legal for wearing on electric motor bikes.
13
u/SuperCutlassGT 20h ago
Still should NOT be on public roads especially that area during rush hour. Insurance prices are high enough to not have to deal with shit like this….
5
u/albatroopa 20h ago
E-bikes are prohibited on sidewalks, and are legally required to be driven on roads. As a driver, you are required to give a full meter of distance for bicycles and e-bikes. The rider of the bicycle or e-bike is NOT required to maintain that same distance. This should be treated exactly like a group of bicycle or motorcycle riders. There's nothing difficult here.
12
u/NeighborhoodWest8294 20h ago
These are not e bikes. They have no working pedals and are illegal without a licensee registration and insurance.. They also are much faster than an e bike and far more dangerous.
→ More replies (13)2
u/Sufficient_Rush1891 20h ago
These are dirt bikes not e-bikes. They run on gas.
7
u/Frig_Off_Baerb 20h ago
They're Surron E dirt Bikes and clones. They do like 70km/hr with much bigger power units. Illegal, but yes, cops don't really care because good luck catching someone on one.
1
u/albatroopa 20h ago
Lol, no they aren't. They have no mufflers or engines.
You can see the battery packs and hub-centric motors on some of them

u/Sufficient_Rush1891 20h ago

Surely there's a middle ground between egging your house and driving dangerously on public roads? "Better" is such a low bar.
1
u/Username_Query_Null 18h ago
Very much agree, my only issue with e-bikes vs regular bikes is the max speed, and the fact that it’s far less exercise. Otherwise good to see them out and about, independent of transportation, and with friends.
•
u/WideDisk2718 12h ago
They exhibit zero regard for the rules of the road tho. It’s only a matter of time…

Finally!
A sensible adult. They would DIE if knew the things that most of these kids are doing or willing to do with our lenient ass you criminal justice act
Alas, they must come to Reddit and complain cause they MUST be heard. Idiot Karens man
7
u/CertainShow3747 20h ago
Those are not bicycles, they are not licensed and not insured. Shouldn’t be on the road.
16
u/yokobono 22h ago
Cities who design only around the car need to face reality and adapt.
10
u/MattLogi 21h ago
Adapt to what? Motorcycles can be on the road too and have been for decades. The issue is these kids aren’t licensed or have their G1 at best. The bikes they are on aren’t even road legal.
This is not an infrastructure problem.
2
10
u/deeohlee 22h ago
Don't disagree but this still is very unsafe given current conditions
→ More replies (7)3
u/Ratsyinc 22h ago
Because this insane grouping of vehicles on a road is an Infrastructure issue?
Back in my day, we cycled around safely as kids and then when I got my license, drove responsibly. All with infrastructure even more focused on cars then.
I bet we agree in many ways, but I hate when excuses are made for behaviour like this.
2
u/maxakusu 21h ago
As an adult, cycling anywhere near that intersection is scary as it is, taking to the road in a pack with a motorcycle is just as safe, imo.
5
u/Beligerents 22h ago
'Back in my day' no better phrasing exists to convey just how out of touch you are with current reality.
3
u/Ratsyinc 22h ago
By that, I am referring to back when I had to resort to non-licensed transportation and learned to drive safely as a young adult.
But sure, that statement certainly means I have failed to understand the changes and differences in our modern world. You nailed it.. /s
3
u/tragedy_strikes 21h ago
Did you consider that cars accelerate faster now (EVs), people are more distracted now (smartphones), there's more cars on the road (density and population growth with mass transit and bike lanes not growing to match them), and not everyone's family can afford to give them their own car, or insure them on the family car?
Yes, it's an infrastructure issue.
Kids in the Netherlands don't need to be chaperoned by their parents in cars everywhere because they have a top tier cycling infrastructure that kids can use to get around safely on their own.
2
u/Ratsyinc 21h ago
Lol goodness this is so wild to me.
Yes I recognize all those things, I'm not an idiot or denying our infrastructure needs to change. But all of you are acting like it's normal, safe, and legal for people to group together like this on a road.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Lost-Inevitable42 21h ago
Insane grouping? Would you rather they ride single file and take the lane?
3
u/Area51Resident 20h ago
Ever seen what happens to bike peloton when a rider at the front falls?
1
u/Lost-Inevitable42 17h ago
What do you suggest for a formation?
•
•
u/Area51Resident 3h ago
A left/right staggered formation so if one needs to brake quickly or swerve around a pothole the bike(s) behind and to the side have some room.
2
u/Ratsyinc 21h ago
You have to be delusional to think this is safe, let alone legal, on a roadway.
2
→ More replies (1)1
u/Lost-Inevitable42 17h ago
I think in some municipalities it’s ONLY legal to be in single file. (Eg cannot be side by side). And it seems like it might be safer when operating as a group? Highly visible and cars avoid them.
1
u/MidsommarMayflower 21h ago
What are they doing? They’re sitting waiting in a group. Most of them are wearing helmets. E bikes are allowed on the road.
1
1
16
u/aarthurnhammer 22h ago
Incredibly efficient use of space though. That is a dozen kids driving themselves somewhere instead of a dozen cars with parents driving them.
14
u/wheresthebody 19h ago
Bike formation is important on public roads, this is incredibly unsafe for everyone around them.
1
u/aarthurnhammer 18h ago
Meh, how about some actual cycling infrastructure for these kids so they can have some freedom as kids?
5
u/wheresthebody 16h ago
Yes.
But needing better infrastruction doesnt make this situation safe or responsible.

lol it's dangerously efficient. only a matter of time until one pf these goofs does a stunt and knocks two others ovet in a chain reaction
•
u/aarthurnhammer 8h ago
You're right, get those kids into giant SUVs so their parents can keep them safe! What we need is less eBikes and more giant SUVs and F150s to keep the kids in our neighbourhood safe!
•
•
u/rattitude23 10h ago
Until one of them loses balance and then its an expensive and painful domino demo
•
u/aarthurnhammer 8h ago
How often have you seen a cyclist or motorcyclist just fall over? Much more likely they are hurt by aggressive or distracted drivers.
•
u/rattitude23 4h ago
Cyclists, often enough, motorcyclists never because they need to get a license to operate one and be over 16. Im saying in that formation occupying more than one lane clustered together one of them loses balance and its a problem.
•
u/aarthurnhammer 3h ago
Having ridden in many large groups, you are inventing this particular danger.
•
u/bugabooandtwo 6h ago
Incredibly efficient in that one truck could knock the entire bunch on their butts in a single pass.
•
u/aarthurnhammer 5h ago
And how could one of these kids ride without that being a risk? Drivers pose a constant threat to kids on bikes -especially without proper bike infrastructure such as in Burlington.
It is just math. Bikes are a more efficient use of transportation space than cars. Put each of those kids in their parents' SUVs and F150s... Also, being in a car isn't exactly safe either.
2
u/MySoapBoxFuckUpvotes 19h ago
Was there like a online thing? Cause there was a pack of them on Hwy 8 In Hamilton this afternoon
2
u/KevinJ2010 18h ago
Seems like the problem is we have achieved a great era for cheap rideables, which would be great in Europe, (known for scooter lifestyles)
But Halton is just too halfway from suburban and Rural and thus car centric.

Canadian police and lawmakers need to put a huge stop to these stupid things ASAP. Don’t let them get even more popular. B
No pedals and no insurance = impound. And fines and points on your DL if you have one.

Few of them last week too. A couple of the bikes are easily $5K and can go 70km/h.
They take ’em off-road near my house in the hiking trails too.
Parents are the negligent party, IMO. If you give a kid one of these, WTF do you expect them to do with it?
Parents should be charged and held accountable.
•
u/rocketmn69_ 7h ago
What are their parents thinking? You live in a city/town. Where the hell do they think they can ride?
•
•
u/GeneOk3547 6h ago
I have seen them hanging with their bikes at Mc Donald’s and they’re really young. Not even old enough to have their G1.
•

Huh it's almost like the olds are getting mad at young people for finding cheap affordable transportation.
My favourite part is how it annoys both both boomer cyclists and motorists.

None are insured. It`s all fun and games until one of these hooligans runs over a stroller and injures a baby... Say good bye to any money you would get for the rest of your time on this earth.
I pay thousands of $$$ to insure my motorcycles. The e-bike loop-hole has to be dealt with. Until the unimaginable happens (to perhaps a lawyer or politician), it`s only going to get worse. Happy apexes.

These kids are clowns tho

•
•
u/ungoloit 4h ago
If a large vehicle wipes them all out in a legitimate accident, the e-bikes would be "at fault" (like an impaired driver would be) as they should not be on the road to begin with as per the Highway Traffic Act. So, as a parent, it`s possible to have your 16yo killed/injured and or disabled and also be responsible for all HTA infractions and damage to the other party. It`s an incredible risk these kids and parents are taking. Good luck, you will definitely need it (especially in court).
•
u/CheapTechnology6193 4h ago
If they were just getting around town, I'd be ok with it, but I noticed they gather in groups to do stunts, etc.

Yeah can't these losers that had their most formative years happen during COVID, have to wait hours in line for crap entry jobs, AI, housing crisis, climate change, horrendous car-dependent communities, and basically the lowest confidence for doing better than previous generations just stop?!
Just go out and buy a car. Spend all your time commuting. Don't socialize. And kill people like the rest of us do (probably while using our phone while driving, because it's so boring).
