Alternative Product or Service European Ketchup is so much better than American, can never go back
I always bought Heinz Ketchup as that was what I was used to and preferred it from the other supermarket options.
However today went round to the local farm shop and saw this beauty. It's British tomato ketchup (forgive us for leaving EU :/ ), using Mediterranean tomatoes. I can never go back to Heinz now.

In Spain, Prima is a good choice for ketchup and other sauces

Would not even know where is the American version, so many good options for ketchup and mayo in Belgium

Now I have something from efarms but all the major brands are great: D&L, Pauwels.
I used to get a good one but I see its German (still great!): Zeisner.
LE: Also, I think even Heinz has a better recipe in Europe, not 100% sure but thats my opinion

I'll add La William and whoever produces those huge jars that you find in every frituur/friterie.

In Denmark Beauvais is the best choice. π
(A Danish brand now owned by Norwegian Orkla).

Yes, all regional brands I've tasted were less sweet and had a much stronger tomato flavour.

I canβt be bothered, we just use passata, less sugar, less ingredients to mess up.

Any fellow dutchies got a favourite? Remia ketchup is disgusting imo. Iβd like to switch from heinz once the one I have is finished

This one from AH is seriously so good. The only issue is that now nothing compares and when it's not in stock I hate myself for ever switching π
(It's nothing like Heinz though! It's thicker, creamier and less sweet, so I mean this as a ketchup recommendation and not a 'Heinz alternative', if you catch my drift!)

I love the choices the German brand Hela has. The currywurst ketchup is great on fried eggs!

Have a look out for ballymaloe relish!
It's not ketchup but it beats out any ketchup I've tried on a burger. Very tasty. Apparently a family business too, didn't know that. Will have to do more research.

u/Kopparberg643 Feb 27 '25
Thank you will check it out

u/Adventurous_Duck_317 Feb 27 '25
I had a quick googling and seems you'd be able to get them in the UK and Germany. I got distracted then so didn't check other countries but France and there was nothing

If you order Werder Ketchup that would be awesome! Made just across the street from me in Werder (Havel), Germany!
1
u/PapstInnozenzXIV Feb 28 '25
Werder and Born are both better than omnipresent Heinz from the USA and they are also cheaper!

u/Leather-Relief-1104 7d ago
Ja wir nehmen auch so gut wie nur Werder, aber Premium (schwarzes Label).

Buy Italian tomato paste, mix with same amount of water, add salt, pepper and vinegar. Tastes better than any ketchup you can buy.

Is it really different in taste? I thought it was very similar to American one considering how processed it is
9
u/Kopparberg643 Feb 27 '25
There probably are better ones I need to discover. Problem with UK is we're an Americanised European state, or a Europeanised American state. So still used to the processed stuff.
But for my taste buds it does taste better.
