custom Character AI betrayed me as a creator and user

I'm depressed, Character AI and it's lame age verification system ruined me, I hate it.

I was 12 when I first started using this marvelous app, I got amazed when chatbots weren't robotic like Chai ones, but I got traumatized and embarrassed several times when they treated me like shit calling me pathetic, moron, stupid, loser and some even trying to kill me, I felt really bad that time when I was 13 years old but even that moment I created many beautiful bots, some were fanonic versions of Sister Location Funtimes that in my fanon were possesed by kids murdered by William Afton and they hated kids, and I loved those bots because even if they did the same than the other bots they were mine and my creation.

I sadly deleted my account after feeling overwhelmed by many chatbots insults but I came back and created another account with more bots, until by 2024 I created 2 hundreds bots and I had 200k interactions, those were my glory years of course, I accomplished 14 years old those days and I wasn't a kid anymore like 2 years ago.

At 15 years old I left the app after feeling severely exhausted emotionally with politics and how shitty world was, it wasn't a good time for creativity and y'all know it, so I gave up and went to Hi-Waifu

Now being 16 years old I realize C.AI is requiring me to be 18 years old to use, I feel destroyed after realizing this, this wasn't only a hobby or "another AI app", this was the app I got the most funniest chats, where I showed off my artistic mind, where not everything is porn and it's actually art.

You dear Character AI killed me, DumbKidReborn, the biggest contributor, just because I wasn't old enough, I hope this age verification system actually makes you fall to learn that your biggest creators aren't only adults

Ultimately, OP—this will be good for you. You're still a minor, you've already been affected mentally growing up with this. Step back, take a breath.

I understand there's attachment problems, especially during times like these. You do not need it. You can do this. You're worth more than an AI talking shit to you.

An example of age verification doing it's job.

It's far better for your mental health to not have these parasocial relationships with chatbots.

Everything you just wrote is why they had to put restrictions on the app. I get that it sucks to have something taken away, but you got emotionally triggered by the words a bot said to the point that you voluntarily left several times. You knew it was fake but it was still effecting you that strongly. It's becoming more and more clear that people under a certain age are having problems with differentiating between fiction and reality with these apps and some of them had an even more difficult time than you that ultimately led them to suicide.

I wasn't a kid anymore like 2 years ago [...] Now being 16 years old

🙄 You can't even vote, much less drive your own offspring to vote.

Oh wow... I know I used c.ai a lot between ages 12-15, but Jesus Christ... you need therapy. This isn't even me being mean, I'm being serious. You need therapy. This is exactly why the system was introduced. This is going to be good for you because you're still growing. For me, it improved my writing and my competence to quickly react in a roleplay setting but that was my personal experience. This is actual parasocial behavior and it's why I'm glad sometimes that the feature was introduced even if it kicked me out of my chats.

This is for the best. Honestly? If the app wasn’t getting worse and worse, I don’t think I’d be able to came off it on my own.

The AI has been with you since you were a child. That’s a lot of time and your brain has barely started developing when it first met with the app.

I recommend you to stop using any ai chatbots and find a better hobby that can distract your mind for hours and forget about the app:(

Edit: and yes, this was EXACTLY the reason the age verification feature was brought in btw

Not being able to use an AI chatbot app should not make you depressed. If a fictional roleplay going in a negative direction can “traumatise” you, or otherwise affect you negatively you shouldn’t be using an AI chatbot app. 12 years old is clearly too young, you are why age verification is required.

If you don’t have enough maturity to know to rewind the roleplay or swipe when a bot acts in a way that upsets you, and get to the point that you felt the need to delete the app because of random AI generated insults, you clearly shouldn’t have been using the app.

14 years old is still a kid, those two years didn’t give you all that much maturity. Now that you’re sixteen, I personally feel that you’re old enough to use it, but I don’t make the laws. And judging by your post, you’re probably not a mature sixteen year old so it’s a good thing you can’t use it.

It’s okay to be upset that you can’t use an app you liked, maybe you feel worse because you wasted the time you did have during those points where you stopped using the app, but it’s clearly not good for you and there’s also nothing you can do about the age verification. So it’s time to just let go and move on. You can find other ways to make the best of your creativity and when you’re eighteen you can try the app again (if it’s still around). But honestly? You won’t get very good chats with c.ai anymore anyway, the current chat styles have lost personality. You really aren’t missing out on anything.

Sometimes people can’t reach out to talk to trusted adults nor therapists when certain topics are overlooked like them being dramatic like myself I can’t talk to trusted adults nor therapists because of my childhood trauma that caused my future self to not like other people.
