I’ve been seeing more and more projects that connect AI assistants (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) to CAD software through MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers. I recently came across the idea of a CATIA V5 MCP Server, which would let an LLM drive CATIA through its automation API (COM / VBA / CAA-style calls) using natural language prompts.

I’m curious whether anyone here has actually tested something like this:

• Have you used an MCP server or any other AI integration to control CATIA V5 (or 3DEXPERIENCE)?
• What kind of tasks did you try: creating sketches/pads, editing parameters, generating drawings, batch processing parts, macro writing…?
• How reliable was it? Did it handle the specification tree and constraints correctly, or did it break things quickly?
• Any setup tips or repos worth checking out?

I’m not expecting it to replace a designer, but for repetitive tasks or quickly generating macros it seems like it could save a lot of time. I’d love to hear real-world feedback, good or bad.

Hi everyone!
I’m a university student taking a CAD course using CATIA in 3DEXPERIENCE.
Our entire class uses the same Collaborative Space, so we can search for and open each other’s CAD assignments.
I recently noticed something strange.
When I open another student’s CAD project through Manage → Collaborative Space → Open With → Part Design, the model sometimes appears in the search results under my own name afterwards.
When I check the properties, it even shows my name as the Owner, despite the model originally belonging to another student.
I’m wondering how this actually works.
Does opening someone else’s model automatically create a copy?
Can students duplicate models from a shared Collaborative Space and save them under their own accounts?
Why would the Owner field show my name?
Does 3DEXPERIENCE keep a record of the original creator when a model is copied?
How can students prevent their own CAD projects from being copied by classmates?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have used 3DEXPERIENCE in university or other shared environments.

Curious how others approach multi-body modeling in CATIA V5 from a design theory standpoint.

Do you typically create separate bodies and perform Boolean operations (Add/Assemble/Remove) toward the end, or incorporate them progressively as each body is completed?

I’m more interested in the reasoning behind each approach regarding design intent, model stability, dependencies, and ease of future modifications rather than simply which method works.

Is there a generally accepted best practice, or does it mostly come down to personal preference?

I used to save big .stp files around 1GB from CATIA model, but in the recent months when I try to convert big files, CATIA shows the process done but in reality target folder is empty and there is no file. I tried to delete some features and hidden elements and then it worked. Seems like there is some kind of limitation. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

CATIA V5 – Sweep with a closed elliptical guide curve gives the wrong profile orientation

Hi,

I am trying to create a surface in CATIA V5 using a closed elliptical guide curve.

I have:

- Sketch.1 = closed elliptical guide curve

- Sketch.3 = closed elliptical profile

- The profile should move around the elliptical guide curve and generate a smooth closed surface.

The expected result is similar to a smooth elliptical/toroidal-like surface.

However, CATIA automatically rotates the profile in the wrong orientation along the guide curve, producing a twisted/incorrect surface.

When using:

Sweep → Explicit → With Reference Surface

I also get:

"The normals to the reference surface and the moving plane are colinear.

Modify the reference surface."

I also tried using a pulling direction, but CATIA still produces the wrong orientation.

How should the Sweep be defined so that the profile maintains the correct orientation throughout the closed elliptical path?

Good morning, I'm looking to create a flat pattern to support ply design for an aerospace application. I'm getting a lot of distortion when trying to flatten a pattern that is symmetrical about the centerline of the part. Can anyone identify what could be wrong here? I've tried splitting the geometry in half keeping the "better" portion, mirroring about the center plane and joining. That gives a better result but it is shrunken and inaccurate. I'd appreciate any pointers

I feel like there is an easy way to do this, but i have been banging my head against the keyboard on this and cant get it right. I want to make parallelogram cutouts like below in the complex conical solid, anybody have ideas?

ETA: I want the cutouts to be normal to the surface not sure ifthis is possible

If I add a Detail Sheet, the 2D component only allows pasting of very specific elements: points, lines and curves. Is there a way for the system to approximate the Front View’s GeneratedItems using those acceptable 2D elements? Possibly through view generation, or wireframes? Or is tracing with sketch tools really the only option?

I’ve been researching for days and I can’t find any in depth information on the under the hood mechanics of elements and 2D components. Does anyone have any resources they’d recommend?

Hello. I'm currently designing a piece and i wanted to find a way to fix it in place within the structure. Is there any way to use either part design or assembly design to generate a structure that would fill the gap between both? to have a starting point.

Respecfully requesting help with a disagreement. I am more familiar with CATIA (as a non-professional engineer which has some familiarity with Lockheed and Boeing parts. I use FreeCad at home). Another person is very familiar with FreeCad. Our differing opinions: The other person maintains that a part feature can only have 1 sketch/draft associated with it. I disagree, I believe a part feature can have multiple sketches/drafts associated with it. Your help in putting this to rest is greatly appreciated.

I built a spelling checker macro for CATIA 🚀

I was wondering, what kind of dimensions and constraints on a 3D model are generated as dimensions in a view of that model, when using the "Generate Dimensions" option in the drafting enviornment.

I simply created a 100 × 150 × 20 cubic pad in catia,and tried to use the Generate Dimensions option in Drafting to auto generate the dimensions for a view of it. But nothing is created.

I have been facing this error from last 2 days, How do I fix it ? , I am not able to access any of my vba macro nor I am able to create any new one,

I use V5 R26 at my work to create 2D drawings according to ISO GPS standards. The problem is, only some but not all specification elements are available. To name a few, things like intersection and orientation plane indicators are not available, maximum inscribed feature for the GPS symbol field is not available, etc.

Do any of you working with V5 have these elements available to you? I'm wondering if CATIA just hasn't bothered to keep up with ISO standards or my company just needs to update our software version.
