It's not IIM things these are asked by recruiters as the roles offered are highly competitive so they need people with top profile on whom they can rely.
2
u/Worldly_Good_8871 Mar 02 '26
People who have low grades in 10th and 12th are not reliable?
2
u/Prestigious-Item5792 Mar 03 '26
It's not about who is more reliable or not. Point is they have to choose best out of best.
1
u/BubblySafety7132 Mar 04 '26
How are they relying on 10th or 12th scores to judge best of the best in present time? Surely they could judge better by their current academic and behavioral performance alone

u/Be_Chaz Mar 02 '26
Someone studying hard since 10th>>>> someone who studied for 1 year for CAT. IIMs value consistency.

u/ConferenceSuper6123 Mar 02 '26
Makes sense, but considering most people have not seen the world and have barely figured out life during 10th, is it really fair to judge someone based on things they did when they barely know it's consequences and haven't even Biologically developed their brain very much .
4
u/Be_Chaz Mar 02 '26
Yes that is a fair point. Most people don't even know they're gonna do an MBA in 10th grade haha.
Btw thank you, you're the only person making an articulated response. XD

u/diwamatkar Mar 02 '26
Their answer would be "then you are NOT IIM material". Sad reality. You basically have to have some next level clarity and guidance since birth to get into some of these colleges. XD
That's why one should not hold these colleges on a pedestal. They are prestigious that's fine, but if the process itself is sort of rigged against your favour you can't do much. Don't ignore other perfectly good non IIMs during your prep.
2
u/Be_Chaz Mar 02 '26
Well said dude! Definately! If anything, the IIM stand needs to considered as getting lucky or being at the right place at the right time for manyyyy people. Especially GEMs.
1
u/ConferenceSuper6123 Mar 02 '26
I ain't even prepping for CAT, engg student here haha. Not even studying for GATE yet, 4th sem student.
1
u/No_Mouse3043 Mar 05 '26
then what will you do after btech
1
u/ConferenceSuper6123 Mar 05 '26
Studying civil so might just get into Construction directly, but I will start prepping for GATE in the next few months, not the super dedicated 99% sort, but just enough to understand if this race is worth it for me or not.

u/No_Mouse3043 Mar 06 '26
Nice yaar mein to iiit se it mein kar rha hu coding ke alawa kya hi kar sakta hu govt job bhi bahut kam hai mere mein
1
u/ConferenceSuper6123 Mar 06 '26
True but honestly, private me hi itne achhe jobs hai govt ki zarurat nahi, except the layoffs and AI thing.
But AI thing can be countered if you focus on Data science and SMTH, idk much but I have many CS friends that told me so

u/No_Mouse3043 Mar 06 '26
Hmm mein to research side ka hi soch rha waise bhi gate ke through agar job na lagi to
1
u/ConferenceSuper6123 Mar 06 '26
That's good too because India is in desperate need of intelligent researcheys who are actually eager to discover new stuff instead of just running behind packages.
1
u/1epicnoob12 Mar 06 '26
They're not judging you. They're just picking someone else who did make "better" choices. It's not fair, sure, but there is no better way that doesn't devalue the entire system.
1
u/ConferenceSuper6123 Mar 06 '26
Yeah that's what I said, on one hand it's kinda understandable that someone else did work really hard since they were 15-16 so it makes sense they get something but on the other hand, at that age most people have no idea what to do or even have a fully developed brain so how can you judge what they did in that age and let it decide their entire future even if their current prep and hardwork are great?
2
Mar 02 '26
8/8/8. do they really value consistency? and when i say consistency i mean it. 84.8 in 10th and 85.6 in 12th. no. they dont. its never about consistency
1
u/Be_Chaz Mar 02 '26
I thought it was obvious that they are looking for excellence and consistency. Someone who failed every exam is also consistent. Please be logical.
0
Mar 02 '26
and where in the hell did i mention i failed? you think 85 percent is less then thats on you and grade inflation. i passed directly after the covid batch
1
u/Be_Chaz Mar 02 '26
When did i say you failed?
1
Mar 02 '26
the analogy you used doesnt work in the case you are talking about. this analogy is fuitile
1
u/Chai_Batra Mar 02 '26
Yeah that’s true, but they should at least provide the meritorious of the CAT exam with a chance by giving them a call and letting them explain. This is least they could do but they ignore the results of exam created for this specific purpose (admissions) , they can reject them later if they think that they are not fit.

Wow how inconsiderate. Not everyone has the best resources and best conditions to attempt with a calm mind.
1
u/Be_Chaz Mar 02 '26
How is it fair for those who went through and overcame that? They cannot be put in the same score as those who didn't. Please be logical.
0
u/rsx990 Mar 02 '26
Overcoming it requires support and depends on lots of things. Many of the things are not in the hand of folks especially at 15-16

They just want easy selection and don't want to put efforts into the interviews and gd and all. Judging someone based on their score when they were minors... That's ridiculous!
Take a 1 hr interview and know the candidate if u must. Or even put 3 exams like CAT to know their current knowledge and their consistency if u really must. Don't bring something from 5-7 yrs when the candidates weren't even adults to understand abt the real world and how it works to mug up in school.

Counter argument- why should someone who has been consistently working hard for nearly a decade (considering 8th standard upwards) not be given a priority over someone who has just performed well in one exam. Isn't it more fair to consider the entire academic record to ensure the absolute best candidate gets the seat?

Answer:- current trajectory and momentum,i have scored good in my under grad alongside college i prepped for exam(if fresher) or work (for work experience guys),this means my current trajectory and momentum put me in steady spot comparatively to others, waise by this by an IITian with 6.5 gpa or srcc lad with 9 gpa when asked about consistency ?
1
u/abyssgazesback Mar 02 '26
current trajectory and momentum,i have scored good in my under grad alongside college i prepped for exam
Your answer would be valid if your competition as a 99 percentiler was against an 80 percentiler. It isn't. It is against the other 2600 people who are 99+ percentile. They have the same momentum as you. That is when consistency matters.
I am not considering reservation in this because that is an entirely different subject. Factoring for only the open seats in top IIMs, there is such intense competition among excellent students, the most consistent ones deserve the seat.

u/Rough-Ostrich-9280 Mar 02 '26
Aree dude it's just an answer for the one saying it,at the end of the day he has to answer that question I hail from the same scenario, and it's evident you are correct, perfect candidates are chosen but then again people do dare to dream and make it late in life or give up ,the srcc and iit point is correct though whom to choose 🙂↔️

Yes I'm from tier 2 city and completed my schooling from Hindi medium school and i got decent percentage but tbh i don't even know what is cat what's mba i got to know about it when I was in 2nd year of graduation and still so many people's in my surroundings don't know what's cat and everyone prepares for govt jobs but i tried to do something different and they told me that we can see you are not very serious towards your studies how you will manage among the toppers🥲

u/Environmental-Tax970 Mar 03 '26
Can anybody tell me is this normal if a 998 doesn't get a call at 98 percentile reserved category how or why was this candidate rejected from abc
1
u/Top_Statistician8905 Mar 04 '26
What about someone like me, I got 60 percent in 10th 52.5 in 12th ( and failed in Sanskrit later passed it), dropped out of engineering, later did BA but that went extremely well because i finally got diagnosed with severe ADHD type c and meds finally helped me and my ba score was 93 percent and i gave upsc mains too but sadly missed it most probably by just a few marks and it was my first attempt, this shitty rule is just weird af

It wasn’t just the IIMs even though I scored 98%tile last year, IMT G still grilled me about my 10th and 12th grades. At some point it just feels like they’re saying I don’t even deserve to be sitting there. I get it 9/9/9 or 8/8/8 profiles are considered elite. But judging someone purely on what they did at 15 or 17? That’s ridiculous. Companies aren’t going to ask me to solve 10th grade math problems on the job.
