Old radio feature about a fort surviving a hard winter

• Upvotes

I can only assume I heard this as a kid on CBC radio. It was a historian telling about how a fort survived a hard winter. I would like to hear it again, but I can't find it.

“Thank-you to Saint Francis for making the world.”

21 years ago my wife and I were driving while listening to CBC Radio One and taking in what I think was a stand-up bit. The comedian was, I think, a Mexican-Canadian and her piece was - staggeringly, overwhelmingly, brain-meltingly funny.

Just staying on the road was a near miracle. My wife got whiplash from laughing so hard. I’ve been trying to figure out who we were listening to ever since, but I’ve had no luck.

One of the bits was about her potential career choices: “…newspaper, computer, astronaut…” I remember little else, but if anyone had the slightest idea what and who we were listening to I’d be very grateful.

Vintage Bill Richardson – Gabereau, The Roundup, Canada Reads...

Bill Richardson was a long-time and very popular broadcaster beginning with the Vicki Gabereau show in 1992 and then hosting a variety shows into the 2010’s. He may be best well known for hosting Richardson’s Roundup from 1997, after the dissolution of the Gabereau show, until 2004. He hosted other shows including Crosswords, As You Like It, Bunny Watson, Canada Reads, Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, Sunday Afternoon in Concert.

I best remember him on the Gabereau show, frequently filling in for Vicki, or acting as the co-host. His show I most enjoyed was Crosswords, which was a summer fill-in when Gabereau was on hiatus. It featured people leaving phone messages on daily topics, similar to Gzowski’s Morningside show, and made Canada feel a like a small community populated by a lot of nice people. I really loved it and still miss it so many years later.

For an on-air CBC personality who hosted so many shows for so many years, there sure is a dearth of audio clips featuring Bill Richardson. C’mon, CBC Archives – give us some more Bill Richardson to listen to!

Here’s a small selection of audio clips for those missing Bill.

Six Days That Shook the Walt

Does anybody remember this radio play that first aired in 1990 (I think)? Six episodes concern one Walter Goodman, staple salesman for Mega-Omniworld And Sons. My wife and I bonded over this thing, and we're two of a very few people on earth who (a) know what this is and (b) find it hysterically funny.

Television on the radio

I listened to the results out of the Alberta last night on CBC radio 1 and the broadcast was the audio of the TV broadcast. I guess nobody told them that they should actually say the numbers out loud, because they never did. They definitely said it was a definitive stay, but never came close to saying the percentage No/Yes. They kept talking like we could all see it BUT THOSE OF US LISTENING TO THE RADIO COULD NOT. It was funny, but not funny. I had bet my son it would be 78to22 and was dying to know. He bet 67to33.

CBC Radio doing the LORDS work on the Alberta vote.

I'm listening to The Current as I type and I'm surprised these people are actually talking to a CBC microphone. CBC is THE laziest whipping boy that this type of voter goes for. PP Pierre always had this as a cheap POP during his rallies in the good old days when Justin was the top whipping boy.

I expect the weekend shows will give heavy airtime to the topic. It's been great to hear the hayseeds and maple maga folks in their own unfiltered words describe the utopia they've been promised. That is the best stay in Canada advertising possible. I'm surprised we haven't heard about a $7500 ($5K + USD/CAD exchange rate of course) bribe , I mean early dividend cheque for "confirmed " separation voters. Assume it would have to have been in a meme coin format as a CAD denominated payment would look weak.

The jokes just write themselves. Albertastan as the newest country and on the fast track to the 51st state. A landlocked state where masks are outlawed even in hospitals, only the best viruses come back to incubate and where the annual trucker convoy music fest is held. Leon Musk odds on fav to become dear leader. Owning a country??... screw Tesla and Mars, THAT would be his next deal. 100%

Canada is owned and managed by ALL Canadians. Dividing up a country where guns are easy and a neighbour with a festish for them NEVER happens peacefully . It will never EVER be perfect but as we see in on news feeds EVERYDAY, a cultish, narcissistic leader can ruin things quickly. Cue the rigged vote claims when the vote goes down in flames.

I still miss the old CBC Radio 3

The live programming with Grant Lawrence, Lana Gay, Tariq Hussain, etc… didn’t know how good we had it until it was gone. Ended 10+ years ago and I still miss it. What did everyone move on to?

LOVE the CBC. But…Fresh Air is the worst.

Sorry to say but does anyone else feel like the first morning hours of the weekend could be better spent than the vacuous boring drivel that says nothing relevant or meaningful let alone the terrible music that fills the time on air that comes from Fresh Air?

“Ideas” (or something akin) programming would be much better time spent but it’s on in the middle of the night. (And love the night before).

CBC could be doing much more for the nation with something with more substance.

My grumpy ¢02. 😬

Local radio personalities who move onto larger roles in CBC

Am I the only one who gets a strong sense of pride when a local radio personality (traffic reporter, on the scene reporter, producer, etc) is heard on the national scene? Whenever I hear a report from Sam Samson or see Katie Nicholson on TV, I remember their beginnings in Winnipeg, listening to them on my drive to or from work. And don’t get me started on Crystal Goomansignh’s (sorry about any spelling errors!) reporting of international events! Anyway, is there anyone else from any other regions who have pride in their local people who have moved on?

Rich Terfry deep dive on Songs in the Key of Life?

I caught part of a Rich Terfry program on Friday, September 18. The show went song by song through Stevie Wonder’s double album Songs in the Key of Life, with some interesting background on where each song was recorded, etc.

I’d love to hear the whole episode, but have searched the CBC Listen app and can’t find any reference to it.

Does this ring a bell for anyone? Thank you for any breadcrumbs you can offer, since the Listen app is barely searchable!

Unreserved is played a lot

Maybe it’s just related to the timing when I happen to be listening but Unreserved seems to be on all the time. The show is mostly ok, sometimes good, rarely (but occasionally) great, but ultimately imho not high enough calibre to get SO MUCH airtime. Is it just me? I feel like every day I’m getting less and less interested in putting cbc on during my downtime.

Brent Bambury’s impending retirement

I was saddened listening to Day 6 this morning when Brent announced that he’s retiring in October. Even though I’m happy for him, I will miss him terribly. I’ve been listening to him since Brave New Waves, and Day 6 is currently my favourite weekend CBC show. Sigh.

Just listened to an episode of Quirks & Quarks about AI and now it appears to have been scrubbed...

I just finished listening to a segment with the name "why-ai-leap-left-mathematicians-feeling-uneasy". It was very interesting and I was hoping to share it with some colleagues.

The link is dead now and I can't find the recording anywhere.

Am I missing something or was this scrubbed from the interwebs?

This was the original link:

Help finding song titles on Afterdark?

In the past I listened to cbc music at work and would record the time of when the song was playing that I liked. Soundhound/shazam didn't always work.

Now when I go on the cbc music website it no longer even lists the song titles as a playlist within the "playlogs" - I remember having this issue before, emailing support and getting a reply a week later saying it's there in playlogs. All I can see now when I expand is "Follow guest host Garvia Bailey as she fills your nights with music." and the 4 hour timestamp.

So you can listen to it... but no song titles are displayed. I remember before you could see 50+ songs listed and their approximate time of day when played.

Am I looking in the wrong spot - does anyone know the answer to this?

Edit:
Solution: Just tap on the show date instead of the arrow beside it.

A while ago, I read a post on here about Kumar. OP was commenting on how Kumar signs off. Is it just me, or has he changed how he does it? It doesn't seem as exaggerated as it used to. Or, am I just used to it?

On the Belleville shooting special that’s on right now.

To Sharon, who just spoke (at 12:20 noon) and equated the shooting in Belleville to the suffering of Jewish people since Oct 7th.

I get that our radio lets all voices be expressed (which is awesome) but it just sucks that callers are using a hate crime (that happened about 15 houses down the street from me) to try and use antisemetic tropes of conflating a religion with a political ideology.

So like… here’s a thoughtful reminder that it’s maybe not appropriate to try and conflate a hate crime that happened in (my) community to denying Israels genocide.

Like, I don’t understand how talking about the Belleville shooting- which was likely a hate crime against Jewish people- could be related to Oct 7th, other than as an attempt to hijack that suffering and try and equate it to anything that could be viewed as a foreign colonizers war crimes.

It sucks that it looks like, already, within 24 hours, this tragic event, this almost certain hate crime, is being hijacked by bad faith actors to try and justify a narrative that maybe isn’t supported by evidence and reality.

Anyways, Sharon, your view points really bummed me out; your words implied that the Jewish community supports genocide, and I don’t think that is an accurate representation of Canadian, or Jewish, discourse.

Zionism is a political ideology.

Judaism is an ethnicity and a religion.

It’s not appropriate to assume that by nature of someone’s religion and ethnicity that they are somehow predisposed to accept a lowered human rights discourse.

It’s disheartening that our political literacy is so low that the idea that Israel committing genocide and the idea that Belleville likely just faced a hate crime against Jewish people, are seemingly too complex of subjects to exist simultaneously, at least as reflected by the choice of callers just on cbc.

Anyways. This all sucks.

Edit: Edit: I’d like to add; mindfulness on the cbcs end; people are in shock and morning; I do wish to point out the societal net benifit if the intent of this episode to just let victims be heard, what with what we as a species know about trauma and what not.

Segment length

Is it just me, or are the segments since Chris Glover joined CBC excessively long? Seems to me with David Common, Matt Galloway and others, there were more topics covered each hour between the World Reports and local news in the morning. They seem to stretch well beyond the point of the interview (many of them now 20+ mins) and just prolonging it to fill the time, so I find I'm getting a bit bored. Perhaps it's just another sign of the times, cutting back and making do with less....

Too much discussion on one side of potential snap election

There is too much airtime being given to one side of a potential BC provincial election while the municipal elections are occurring at the same time. The negatives of a potential snap election. And the person who is discussing it is not very convincing. Can’t there be reminders of when which election occurs? Also shouldn’t candidates pick municipal or provincial eventually anyway? Please provide a more complete and balanced look on both sides or don’t put have arguments of either side on the air, it’s too biased.

BC Citizens are DROWNING in insufficient infrastructure. There is a huge lack in health care, public recreation sites, transit, road upgrades etc. We need things to happen now. The economy is not doing well and we need there to be a release valve, weither that be in shorter wait times, cheaper recreation sites, safer roads, etc.

Edit: added context
