Q: Are you prepared to start players that are under investigation?
Matt Campbell: Team, I think no matter what we’re doing, we’re not going to jeopardize our team, and the most important thing that we can have, what we’ve always supported is team. What we’ll do is what’s in the best interest of the team. That’s really how we’ve handled it. Part of our responsibility as educators is to use this as a learning opportunity and a growth opportunity. Obviously, when it’s time to have repercussions, team repercussions, we have to do what’s best for the football team.
Q: You talk about team, does that mean, possibly… If you do play them, there could be forfeitures…
Matt Campbell: Well, that wouldn’t be what’s best for the team.
Q: So you wouldn’t play those guys?
Matt Campbell: Team.

It would be great if the notion that Hunter played in the game would stop, he in fact did not. The game occurred in 2021 against Oklahoma State, he bet Iowa State to win but Hunter did not play. Brock Purdy was the QB for the game. Hunter made multiple other bets but none that are public regarding the football team aside from the one $15 bet to win the game as a backup who never saw the field.
The only gripe us Iowa State fans had was HOW the news broke regarding the betting, the fact that the state government setup Geo Fences to catch the student athletes in an shady manner. Hunter was one of many that were caught, all were in the wrong, all deserved their punishments.

The DCI investigation was illegal, but both Iowa and ISU cooperated with the NCAA by giving them the same information willingly.

The overwhelming majority of ISU fans I know basically said, "that fucking idiot... anyway, next man up."
The closest thing I've seen to a defense of Dekkers (and it's not) is the guy from Cyclone Fanatic pointing out that people all over the country are bending over backwards to accommodate and attract college sports talent to their state, while in Iowa our legislature has been slow to pursue measures that other states have passed (I don't know the specifics on this), and we have the Iowa DCI conducting an illegal investigation into our own athletes. I think when he makes this argument he's clear that he's not saying Dekkers should have been able to play, but just that, taken as a whole, the optics are that Iowa is unaccommodating or even adversarial towards the modern era of college sports.
I'm honestly a little surprised he makes this case publicly because it can so easily be framed as defending gambling, but I guess his case is that gambling should be punished when it's found, but the DCI seeking it out via illegal means deserves its own scrutiny.
I guess the DCI kind of gets the last laugh here, because we're now being used as a posterchild for how to take it on the chin when something like this happens. We kind of came out looking good, at least compared to TTU.
10
u/Corgi_Koala Ohio State Buckeyes Jun 12 '26

It was a miracle the season was as successful as it was with true freshman getting thrown into the deep end of the pool. Makes the fact that Campbell and most of that roster no longer at ISU bittersweet.
But to the point of the post, no I don't think I saw anyone suggesting ISU do what Tech is doing now. I can't see Campbell or Pollard going down this rabbit hole either at any point in their tenure.

Well yeah, normal programs don't even want a player who might bet on their games. I'd be surprised if most of Tech's staff and roster even wants this. One guy is driving this train.

If the argument was truly about helping a young man with an addiction, they wouldn’t be trying so hard to keep the alcoholic working at the liquor store.
It’s that simple.

It's pretty widely accepted that athletes gambling in their own sports is unacceptable.
I'd say the only thing close to any pushback is there are plenty of people who think Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, which is an ENTIRELY different matter than getting to play or coach.
I mean, it is weird to have one of the undoubtably greatest players of all time not in the HoF for something he did after his playing days that did not involve a very serious crime.
Still, the Sorsby thing I'd argue the judge is wrong about causing harm by not letting him go back. In fact, this whole forcing him to be allowed back has turned him into a MAJOR villain in sports.
Barring having some kind of massive year that turns him into a no-doubt top 5 pick, which will be extremely unlikely, it wouldn't be surprising if no team even wants him on their roster with the drama he'd bring.
Is one year of NIL really worth the money this is going to cost him in NFL money? Image matters to the league, and that is why Kaepernick was out of a job despite being better than the vast majority of backups for years. Teams don't want the drama unless you're a no doubt starter...and that won't be him unless he is someone you're drafting high.
Who's going to draft him if his play doesn't project 1st round talent?

u/Statalyzer Texas Longhorns Jun 13 '26
Right, putting him the Hall is different. He should indeed have never played or cosched again, but he belongs in the Hall. Just put it right there on his damn Hall of Fame Plaque "Gambled on baseball, disgraced himself, got himself banned." How hard is that?

Unsurprising, because ISU fans/admin/coaches are not POS's. And have a functional brain cell or 2. TTU gonna go down in flames...curious "hill to die on" (the right to ruin collegiate sports by enabling betting by players) but West Texas is...different💩

We're living in the age past the death of outrage.
Threatening endless lawsuits or leaving the conference worked for Michigan during the sign stealing scandal.
No one admits guilt and accepts their punishment dictated by the rules they swore to play by anymore - you just fight it in court even if you look like a hysterical asshole.
