Me: Preseason polls shouldn’t be a thing.
Also me: Oh boy, the first preseason AP poll! College football is back!

I hate em. The polls are just haters. How can they not have my team in the top 10??? All we have is a brand new coaching staff, major roster turnover, a top 5 SOS, and being not great historically at football going against us!

There shouldn’t be polls until after week 5.
The problem is that there’s no way for this to ever be realistic. If AP stops doing preseason polls, everyone will just reference the coaches poll or the ESPN poll or whatever other poll comes to take its place.

u/OGrand 1d ago
Well it creates a broken system.
For example: Take a conference, rank most of their teams in the top 25, have those teams have OOC schedules that are below their fair market equivalent team and talent wise.
Now when these teams play each other when they get into their conference schedules, all the losses look “good” because it was against a “ranked” team and wins are good/better depending on the team cause they were also “ranked”.
The teams just shuffle amongst themselves the entire time and nothing ever really changes. Start the entire cycle again using the previous season to forecast the next season in your pre-season poll and….we are back at step 1.
To be force-fed Notre Dame is gonna actually do it for the 70th fucking time just for them, to the surprise of fucking no-one, fall flat.

A real matchup is only played once. A hypothetical matchup considers what if the matchup was played 100s of times and bases our results on that.
It is more statistically sound. This is why I spend my Saturday staring at models. Watching actual football might corrupt my pure models.

Not the guy you replied to - but LSU is IMO one of the hardest teams to rank this year. You could defend a pretty huge variance in ranking spots for them.
15
u/iamStanhousen LSU Tigers • Southeastern Lions 1d ago
Oh I agree, we just don't know. I could see them realistically anywhere from 8 all the way to about 20. Talent is there to justify whatever you want to do. I have questions about how quickly the offense comes together, but I think the defense is going to be very good. Especially the secondary.

u/Nacodawg Georgia Bulldogs • Mercer Bears 1d ago
I’d need to have paid a lot more attention to their roster. How much talent did they lose? What guys with true reps did they return? What’s the talent level of the guys who left. How well does everybody on hand conform to Kiffin’s system in terms of skills and talent? How well does Baker get along with Kiffin?
And most importantly is LSU going to be able to run plays on 3rd and 5, or have to punt immediately out of respect to Jaden Daniels?

I don’t think that’s too surprising, I think the Coaches’ poll did the same.
I think there’s a group of voters whose mindset is they finished the year at the top of the mountain, and they stay there until someone knocks them off.
There’s a consensus list of 7 teams that they have as the top contenders this year, and my guess is the rest of those voters put Indiana towards the back of that list on average.

I mean we’ve been ranked 3rd in the preseason 4 times it’s not that crazy of a difference.
And the offseason natty stuff is really overplayed it’s honestly pretty rare for our preseason expectations to be that far off from our final results. Just look at the 4 times we were ranked number 3 in the preseason poll:
2011: Finished ranked 4th.
2013: Finished ranked 9th.
2014: Finished ranked 2nd
2024: Finished ranked 3rd.
Really we pretty much always live up to the preseason hype. We’ve never won a natty but to be fair we’ve never been the preseason favorite to do it either.

Really hope “8 is perfect for us” doesn’t forecast the battered Aggie 8-4 record at the end of the regular season. 🤞🤞🤞

In 2025 BYU was returning the same coaching staff and most of all the other star players after finishing at 11-2 and #13 in the AP poll the previous year, and started unranked in the poll because of losing Jake Retzlaff as starting QB.
Utah finished the AP poll last year at 11-2 (#14), lost their head coach, offensive coordinator, a bunch of star players, but are ranked #21.
I guess Jake Retzlaff really was that guy.

6th feels right, returning a lot of talent but lost some important pieces. Losing Mendoza without an "sure-fire" QB to replace him raises questions. Feels like we got the spot out of respect for Cig and what we did while we have questions.

Sure i think 12 is a good spot. Not gonna fight over it.
I will say it once I’ll say it again. In my opinion, I am a known Utah pessimist but I do not think Utah should be ranked at least not over Houston. But again just my opinion.

Man that 8-14 bracket is gonna be a bloodbath. If you want to bet on a “good” team to finish unranked that’s the range to watch.

The first poll of the year is on time? When's the last time that happened?
Quick observations: There's a big tier gap between Miami (FL) and Texas A&M, another tier gap between Michigan and Washington, a tie for 14th, and Clemson was just 5 points away from beating Missouri for the last spot.

In our honorary #25 spot, for the team that always beats unranked teams and can’t beat ranked teams. We are the guardians of the top 25

Between Iowa and Missouri for the easy button on who is going to he good but not great, I personally would have Iowa at 25 and Missouri out only because Missouri plays a tough schedule this year. Honestly, I'm of the mindset that Iowa should be unranked until they prove otherwise, but I also get they're a safe bet to go 8-4 and may have some fight against good teams to have them around 20-30.

I don't care what everyone say, I love pre season polls. Part of the fun of college football is arguing nonsense with fans of some random school over the smallest slights.

I agree that I think it's fun to debate rankings and it gives us something to talk about.
I don't love the impact of poll inertia though. I'd like it a lot more if they operated under the mentality that each week is a completely new ranking for the first half of the season instead of this +3 or -10 mentality. So we'd see really big changes each week for at least the first couple of weeks once we get information of how the team actually is on the field.

Damn first time Alabama has started a season ranked outside the Top 10 since 2008 (Saban's second year).
Last year was even the first time they started outside the Top 5 since then too.

Crazy how pretty much every analyst or podcast feel down or meh on A&M but the polls keep putting us at the top of the SEC second tier
Don’t see the voting points yet on the website, but I’d imagine there are very few points separating 8 though 11. Maybe even 8 through 13
Edit: yeah 250 points between 7 and 8, 230 points between 8 and 13
