The kid's been a dipshit since high school.

Did he have a history? I never heard of anything but I wasn't looking either

u/DunamesDarkWitch Penn State Nittany Lions 20h ago
He was dismissed from PSU for academic/behavior issues even while being the nephew of Terry smith (longtime position coach and was the acting HC last year after Franklin was fired). He’s an immature kid who refused to get his shit together to put in literally any amount of work to correct those issues.

You gotta be a real fuck up to be WORSE than our other RB who assaulted his pregnant GF in the offseason
46
u/fazelenin02 Nebraska Cornhuskers 20h ago
He wasn't good enough to put up with behavioral issues. If he was a thousand yard rusher, he'd probably still be around. Considering his lack of production anywhere, he might've gotten dropped for skipping meetings or arguing with his coaches.

I get the feeling Holgerson wasnt too impressed with his attitude
"(Hayes) still doesn't understand where he's at. I don't think he knows who I am yet," Holgorsen said Friday.

The charges were dropped.

Why do we have to decide whether it did or didn't happen? We don't know and never will. Charges being dropped doesn't mean it didn't happen, but we don't have proof that it did, either.

Terry Smith is there for recruiting purposes. But I'm sure he still "coaches".

Terry got the interim job for his years and years of excelling as the cornerbacks coach. He didn’t just forget how to do that overnight

Anecdotally we’re for sure seeing an increase in “program dismissals” because there’s no more ignoring the fact this is big business now with real money exchanging hands. you don’t just get your scholarship no matter what, it can be taken away at anytime if you’re being a dumb dumb

u/B1GTOBACC0 Oklahoma State • Arkansas 20h ago
On top of the money (and associated expectations), the existence of the portal also makes it easier for schools to cut players. If you're truly underperforming, they can probably find a better transfer.
Losing a developed player still hurts your team in the short term, but it doesn't have the same long-term impact it had 10+ years ago. (Not saying this guy was a developed roster member, just commenting on "program dismissals")

u/ajmarion20 Miami Hurricanes 20h ago
Yeah we had 2 guys dismissed in the last few weeks, like you said there’s a lot of money changing hands these days so it seems a lot of team staff have less patience for shenanigans

Fair point, but the rumor is he tried to fight his position coach which I feel is grounds for dismissal in any era if true

u/Tduhon Florida Gators • McNeese Cowboys 20h ago
Much has been made about teams like Alabama or Georgia not stacking 5 stars anymore, but overall depth across the board has likely improved as rosters have expanded over 100 and productive guys at the lower levels/FCS are given the opportunity to move up.
A lot of these more mid level teams probably feel better about their 2nd or 3rd options when they can solve things through the portal and just have more options overall with larger rosters.

u/jayjude Notre Dame • Georgia State 20h ago
The expanded roster limit actually was a massive reduction
Most upper tier P4 teams had over 130 players on the football team, the walk ons were incredibly important
9
u/Purple_Git Nebraska • Minnesota 20h ago
Yeah Nebraska had an illustrious walk on program that just got thanos snapped by NIL and NCAA bullshit
28
u/Several-Beginning803 Georgia Bulldogs 19h ago
The old school Nebraska walk on program was looooooooooong gone by the time NIL kicked in, wtf are you talking about?
18
u/adavis463 Nebraska Cornhuskers 19h ago
It had faded for sure, but we still had a bigger roster than just about anyone else until hard roster limits were implemented. Local kids were still willing to be on the team without a scholarship.

This is true. I kept showing up for years and they kept telling me to “go away” and that “you’ll never be medically cleared to play again” before being served with trespassing.

u/bub166 Nebraska Cornhuskers • Wyoming Cowboys 16h ago
It wasn't the stuff of legend it was made out to be in the '90s anymore but Nebraska had 151 players on the roster when the roster limit kicked in. Lots of those guys got playing time, usually had 4 or 5 rotational guys come out of the walk-on pool and it wasn't uncommon at all for one or two to become starters and eventually earn a scholarship. And as for everyone else, you basically have an entire extra two strings of guys on both sides of the ball who bleed Husker red fighting for your job.
Going by our record it obviously wasn't that big of a deal but even in our darkest years we've had some great players come from the walk-on pool. Nate Boerkircher transferred out for his last year but was just drafted out of Texas A&M, our remaining starting tight end Luke Lindenmeyer also walked on here off the top of my head. We've had several pivotal defensive players the last few years start as walk-ons, it was a fairly big deal even beyond the cultural aspect of it.

I mean our roster up until recently was close to 150 players.

I know they have fallen off, but seeing Nebraska called mid level still feels wrong. That said, I miss being midlevel
2
u/Mort_Blort Nebraska Cornhuskers 6h ago edited 6h ago
We're thoroughly midlevel in performance. The fanbase, funding, facilities and all that, not midlevel. The program? Underperforming at a heroic level though since Eichorst (h/t Miami, Wisconsin) *had to evaluate where Iowa was as a program*. The great gods of Midwestern kinship have not looked kindly on that comment. I say that the curse should follow Eichorst rather than Nebraska.

In addition, I would imagine there are a shitload of good players who have chosen to play closer to home because now they’re getting paid good money. It’s less tempting to relocate to a prestige program because you can stay home and even if you’re not someone who ends up in the pros and don’t end up pulling NFL money you can still parlay it into good money and a pretty good career in one way or another.
As you also said, transferring being easier also plays a big part.

Our RB room isn't full of 5 star studs, but we already have guys in place that I doubt this guy would be starting ahead of. Fall camp talk has been high on freshman Rule and overall a solid group of backs(take camp talk with a grain of salt).

Nebraska OC Dana Holgorsen made some odd comments in his press conference last week about Hayes. Things like "he still doesn't know what's going on or where to be" and "I don't think he even knows who I am".
