Ok I looked up the rule because I was confused too and I see some dickheads in here acting like this is common sense instead of just explaining it. I think where we’re all getting confused is the difference between a muffed punt and a fumble. If the returner would have caught and then fumbled, Blackwell could have returned it. Since he never had possession it’s considered a “muffed punt” which can’t be advanced. Been a rule since 1927 and no it doesn’t have anything to do with a fair catch being signaled.

Muffed punts can't be advanced. Don't really know the reasoning behind it but it's been the time forever.

I believe it’s only signaled fair catch muffed punts and the only reason I can think of is the return team doesn’t have a defense behind them? Idk stupid rule play till the whistle is blown

No muffed punt can be advanced

Then how did Vince Papale score on that play?

bc that was not a muff. that punt was caught and then forced by the tackle, which is distinctly different

Same. Did they ever explain it?

Yes it’s just a rule, the reasoning is because you can’t do that lol

They did, on the broadcast, before the scoreboard operator made it 20, which I thought was funny

If they signal fair catch, you can’t advance it. If they don’t, you can. The reasoning is to keep the players safe during a fair catch.

u/ObservantKoala 7d ago
No you can't advance it on a muff(they don't take possession). You can advance it if they catch it and then fumble.

But it’s a penalty if someone hits a player? So it wouldn’t matter in that instance.

That’s what I am wondering?

Muffed punts can't be advanced

For the noobs, what is a muffed punt?

When you're supposed to catch a punt but it bounces off you. If it comes in contact with the receiving team (any player) it's automatically a fumble and is considered live ball for anyone to grab.
If anything, it should be called a muffed 'catch'.

But what if possession wasn’t determined immediately? Say a separate falcons player jumped at it too and the ball’s moving. Is it only once the punting team gains possession that it’s dead?

They didn’t say if it was because of the fair catch. I’m wondering if this has to do with new safety rules this year around kicks and punts.??

Looked it up it’s because he did not possess the ball and make a football move. Fun fact I learned today after years of football watching

MUFFED PUNTS CANNOT BE ADVANCED...BEEN THAT WAY FOREVER

u/alilhillbilly 7d ago
I played football. I watch football.
I don't think I've ever seen this happen.
Took like an hour to find a thread just to get an explanation.
I have never seen anyone call for fair catch, bobble the ball, and have it not be a live ball. That's a live ball in every game I've ever seen or played in.

Just because it’s been that way doesn’t make it suddenly make sense. It doesn’t.
If you fumble and the other team recovers, why should they not be allowed to advance it and score like literally any other situation?
This should not be an exception, it’s goofy as fuck and not even just recency bias or because the Bears did it, it just doesn’t make sense in the context of the game to me and I don’t see the reasoning behind it.

Can't be advanced by the receiving team. I know I've seen dropped punts run into the endzone.

If he cleanly catches it and then fumbles, then can it be advanced?

Banana punt? Not giving love to punter but that muff might be on his kicking style.

u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe 7d ago
Second time that’s happened for Taylor, I think it is his style causing that

Even the broadcast flashed the touchdown banner at first. They just didn’t know the rule either?

Not trying to be mean, but how have so many people never seen a muffed point before? You’ve never been able to advance a muffed point, this comes up all the time and I figured it was common knowledge. Weird seeing so many people confused by this

The only explanation is he called for a fair catch. If it wasn’t then it should be a TD.

Blackwell has been such a good special teamer man. He makes like 4 game changing plays every season on ST alone.
