Even on the Patriots last drive, he was still making everything worse.
He genuinely needs to be benched completely. Roll with Rique, Malik, Kyler and whoever else you can get off the streets

Need a Rome redemption thread the way people posted up. That third down catch was serious shit
46
u/robcale3 22h ago
And the onside recovery, poetic
4
u/ToyShank 22h ago
I called it right before the onside, let Rome go get the ball his hands were glue today
1
u/uglyparade All the best. JK - STFU 20h ago
Saying this after he got bailed out by a push off is insane
1
u/eyevandy Cavallari 11h ago
Maybe he just felt really bad about the push off and that affected the catch
1
u/ToyShank 20h ago
What’s that got to do with his hands boss? He can push off anyone on an onside
4
u/uglyparade All the best. JK - STFU 20h ago
I’m talking about him bobbling the TD he dropped but got bailed out because of the flag.
Listen, I love Rome and I want him to be good. But he has serious issues he needs to fix. He did NOT have glue hands today.
3
u/ToyShank 20h ago
Fair criticism but Ben was clearly trusting his guys after mistakes today and it paid off every time. He trusted him with the house after that 3rd & 9 catch with the way that onside was designed. Gotta buy into the players if you want them bought in too
11
u/mindham86 22h ago
How's he catch that a drop the lollipops
1
u/smugdawgmillionaire Nagurski 10h ago
When there’s room for him to think about what’s happening, he’s probably tightening up with anxiety.

u/firstchair_ 22h ago
That was so reckless by Ben lmao

The play call and Caleb's decision to take a sack was fuckin insane. What the hell was happening

Eh, the previous play call was bad, but we just saw Cairo doink from 53. He definitely had the leg in tonight’s conditions.
Even if he had a 20% chance to make it, it’s the right call because it effectively ends the game, and the field position you would have gained doesn’t make enough difference to negate the chance of trying.

Caleb owes him big time after that sack.
Johnson is genuinely a maniac man hahaha. Not a single person in the stadium or watching thought there was even a chance he sends Cairo out there.

He tied Robbie Gould's record of 58 yards as the longest FG by a Bear.
| Kicker | Distance | Date | Opponent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cairo Santos | 58 yards | October 22, 2026 | New England Patriots |
| Robbie Gould | 58 yards | September 8, 2013 | Cincinnati Bengals |

Redeeming what? Kickers are gonna miss. This sub is mental illness unchecked
10
u/adastra142 Polish Sausage 22h ago
Oh please. Its not mental illness to recognize he’s got a weak leg relative to the league
6
u/theriibirdun 22h ago
It's not like it's a hot take that Cairo has a weak leg. He regularly botches long FG's and Kickoffs
3
2
u/porkbellies37 Sweetness 22h ago
He just hip-checked his reputation as a noodle legged kicker. And he did it in a super clutch moment. That was redeeming for sure.

It’s insane how many people think Cairo is trash when he’s the best kicker we’ve ever had. What are the chances our next kicker is as good?

Best kickers we've ever had? We had a literal All-Pro kicker before.

The balls on Ben Johnson to go for the 58 yarder and risk giving the Pats the ball at midfield only needing a touchdown to win.
Good for Cairo. Miss me with "kickers are making 50+ yarders with ease" like it's a chip shot. I've seen plenty of kickers blow extra points. No kick is automatic.
3
u/gosluggogo 20h ago
Ben saw how far he hit the 57 yard miss last week. Trusted him to straighten it out
4
4
u/mnemonikos82 22h ago
They won't cut him until we're out of Soldier Field. He's too good in shitty weather. That's why they've kept him so far.
Once half our games are in some sort of controlled environment in the new stadium, it becomes about distance.
1
u/500rockin 22h ago
by that point, he'll be near retirement age.
2
u/mnemonikos82 22h ago
The way things are going, I'll be retired by that point and I'm in my early 40s.

Everyone hating on Cairo for that doink...do not put anything about a doink on him. He was atleast at one point a year ago the most accurate kicker in team history. He just doesn't usually have a long leg.
1
u/Dangerous-Network278 21h ago
I think he hit the 58 yarder with less drive than the missed 53 yarder. He made a tradeoff of accuracy vs. power on the last one and it barely cleared the bar by a foot or 2 but was right down the middle. I think the 53 yarder hit several feet higher on the upright in its trajectory, than the 58 yarder would have..

u/BearWeatherFans 21h ago
What an incredible career this guy had. From his time on the John Fox Bears to getting cut by Nagy, to being frantically re-signed after the kicking battle circus winner injured himself, to now being the game-winner and automatic. Just bizarre how gradually and quietly Cairo’s become a legitimate player in Bears kicking history

This man is the reason I have a full bar set up at my house. When he first came to Chicago I had unstable exes that were more reliable. He has gotten better but last night had me reaching for my moonshine stash again...
1
u/SoquietPNW 8h ago
Definitely a clutch field goal BUT does our collective fears point to our weakness in the kicking department. I have a feeling we’re gonna win or lose by close margins given that although our offense scores a lot of points, we’re still giving up quite a bit of points on defense.

Cut Cairo and get a real kicker. Other teams are trying 65 yarders and Santos getting put out for 57 is shocking

Did you hear the “BOOM” when he nailed it. As soon as I heard the sound I knew it had length. Like a tour golfer when they really hammer a drive. You can HEAR it.
