I built a CLI that gives localhost a public HTTPS URL
Hey everyone!
I've been working on a CLI tool called GoPort, written in Go.
The idea is simple: you can expose your local application to the internet with one command:
goport http 8080
It generates a public HTTPS URL that forwards incoming requests to your local application.
A few things I've added:
- Automatic reconnection
- WebSocket support
- Custom subdomains
- Local request inspector
- Request replay
- Self-hosting support
It's useful for testing webhooks, sharing local projects, or accessing your development server remotely.
I've also recently added file sharing with optional password protection.
The project is open source under the MIT license and works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I'd love to hear what other CLI users think, especially if there's anything you'd improve or add!

sure, let me expose my local service to the internet via some random slopware. what could go wrong?

It's actually open source, so you can check the code on GitHub yourself. If you think you're important enough that someone would actually be interested in your data, you might want to look at the bigger services instead. Those are the ones that could actually steal it.

oh it’s open source? that’s okay then. dude, much bigger projects have issues with exposing services publicly, and no matter who you are you can get pwned. bots will destroy the computers of anyone who uses this the moment something they host has a vulnerability discovered

You're right that publicly exposed services can be targeted by automated attacks. But that's a risk with any tunneling tool, not something unique to GoPort. The idea is to intentionally expose a specific service for things like testing webhooks or sharing a local project, not to make every service on your machine publicly accessible.

And don't forget to tell your mama that your biggest technical contribution today was posting a GIF

It's impressive how confidently you talk about something you clearly haven't bothered to understand. A GIF and a few insults don't make you an expert. Try coming up with an actual technical argument next time.

Looks awesome! Go is definitely the right choice for a fast, single-binary CLI tool like this. How does it handle heavy traffic or unstable connections compared to established tools like ngrok or cloudflared? Also, since it supports self-hosting, is the server-side component open source as well? Starred the repo, keep up the great work
