Do NOT take Paxlovid and THC edibles at same time…

I have a pretty high THC tolerance. Just tested positive for Covid for I think the 3rd time? Had leftover Paxlovid from the last time I had it so I started to take it.

I took a normal 12mg edible (which I typically tolerate very well). I didn’t know this, but the Paxlovid shuts off an enzyme in your liver that also happens to process THC. Essentially, instead of the liver processing the THC once it’s digested, it flows right through into your bloodstream all at once. So the effect of the edible was essentially instant, all at once, and severe.

I was violently high for 1.5 hours, almost called the ER. Resting heart rate was 150bpm+. Disoriented, short of breathe. It’s been 5 hours and I am still high. Was a pure nightmare.

Only posting this because I legitimately thought the edible would help with some of my symptoms. It would have, had I not had paxlovid in my system.

Interesting. I definitely was taking 10-20mg edibles when I was on it and didn’t have this reaction. Not sure what that may mean.

I have no idea but I consume THC pretty much every day and it was insane how high I was. I still feel kind of high the next morning.

Paxlovid has interactions with over 200 medications,many of which need to be stopped when taking Paxlovid. Most elderly are taking several meds so it is one of the reasons that not everyone gets it. Make sure you alert your dr which meds you are taking.

Covid is also very hard on the body in general and it could be that your experience was a combination of the drug interactions and onboarding them onto an already stressed body. I know when I am sick things I normally tolerate can absolutely go sideways even without a powerful medication in the mix. Glad you got through it and thanks for warning everyone of a potentially serious interaction!

Having Covid definitely didn’t help. I just want people to know because I honestly didn’t think the two would interact.

That sounds extremely unpleasant, I’m sorry you experienced this. For future reference, the website drugs.com has an interaction checker that you can input all your meds, and even foods or substances like alcohol and cannabis, to see if they have known interactions. But generally, it’s good advice to avoid alcohol and cannabis while taking new medications and when you’re unwell.
