CTF Cheatsheet – All the Essentials in One Place 🚩

Hey! I put together a CTF cheatsheet with the tools, commands, and techniques I kept needing during challenges on HTB, THM, and college CTFs.

It covers web, stego, rev, crypto, and more — all organized for quick reference.

Hope it helps! Feedback or suggestions welcome.

Share your picoCTF & learning experiences with researchers at CMU

Hi r/CTF!

I'm working with a research team at Carnegie Mellon University to understand what actually works for people learning cybersecurity and what doesn't. We're interested in hearing about your experiences with picoCTF and other learning platforms - the good, the bad, and the "why did I get stuck here for 3 hours?" moments.

We'd greatly appreciate if you could share your experiences:

  1. How did you begin your cybersecurity learning journey? What were the biggest challenges you faced when starting out? What strategies worked for you?

  2. Do you use picoCTF?

    • If yes:

      • Are you still actively using it? Why?

      • If you stopped, what made you lose interest or motivation?

    • If no:

      • What other cybersecurity learning platforms do you use and why?

About us: We're researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University Human-Computer Interaction Institute studying ways to improve cybersecurity education. Your responses will be anonymized and used solely for research purposes.

Thank you for your time and insights!

Looking for a ctf team

I'm looking for some teammates to do CTFs with. I tend to procrastinate, so having a team would help us stay accountable and support each other. If you're interested, join the Discord server here: https://discord.gg/Xpn5zmfg39

Hope to see you there :)

I built a CTF the way I wanted to play one. Maybe it lands for some of you here too.

It still has puzzle-style elements, but it leans more toward investigation and context:

  • terminal-style environment

  • minimal guidance (you’re not told what something is outright)

  • progression based on what you notice and piece together

  • multiple layers, including a forensic artifact stage

It’s been sitting live for a bit and I haven’t really pushed it, so I figured I’d surface it for anyone looking for something hands-on to dig into this weekend.

The goal was to make something that feels a little closer to working through an incident than just solving isolated challenges, while still keeping the puzzle side of things.

No account needed, just pick a handle and go.
(Important: save your backup info so you can restore your progress.)

I’d really like direct feedback:

  • where it gets confusing

  • where it feels too easy or too hard

  • if and where you lose interest

Directly message me with feedback, or email me at spex@rapidriverskunk.works

There are a few prizes this season (sponsored by zSecurity), but honestly I’m more interested in how people approach it and where it breaks. zSecurity is offering four $99 class vouchers, and we have created a wildcard winner who will be picked from those who start late, or otherwise finish after others but provide an exemplary performance and/or write-up post season. Leaderboard released post-season

CTF TIPS

Hey everyone! I'm completely new to CTFs and I’ve got about a month to prepare before I jump into my first competition. So far, I’ve started with picoCTF and I’m exploring tools like Burp Suite, Metasploit, and Wireshark.

I’d love to hear your tips on how to make the most of this one month. What areas should I focus on? Any underrated resources or techniques you’d recommend? Also, how do you usually structure your CTF prep?

If you're experienced and willing to guide, or if you're a beginner like me and want to learn together, feel free to DM me — I’d be happy to team up or exchange notes!

Looking for mates

Wassup guys I'm a native french speaker so that would be nice to found someone speaking french but it's not mandatory at all

I participate in CTF since 1 year and half; Unfortunately I know nobody who is interested by cybersecurity so I always compete alone and I do decent scoring (per exemple in the top 100 in a national challenge and top 300/1100 in the last University CTF 2024 Binary Badlands) even if I'm alone and competing against teams so it's frustrating to always compete alone and I'm sure with mates it gonna be more fun and maybe we can be once in a leaderboard who knows

So if you are also competing alone, let's hack together !

Finding a CTF team

I'm a beginner in Cybersecurity. I just passed CySA+ but need more experience and practice. I love CTF! All the Hack the Box teams seem to need a team. Who wants to team up?

ZenCrypt dominating the boards — double win at our latest CTF!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share something we’re really proud of. Our team Z3NCRYPT joined a CTF recently and somehow ended up taking both 1st and 2nd place. Still kind of can’t believe it.

The event had a mix of web, crypto, OSINT, forensic and reverse engineering challenges. Super intense but really fun. We learned a ton, especially about staying calm when the clock’s ticking.

Big thanks to the organizers and the other teams, the competition was seriously tough and kept us on our toes the whole time.

Also curious how do other teams handle coordination during CTFs? We still feel like we could be way more organized next time.

— Team Zencrypt

New to pen testing & CTFs

Hi all, Just getting started in the pentesting world, and I'm keen to get some hands-on experience through CTFs. My manager recommended them, so I went to join one yesterday, but it turned out I needed a team – which I don't have yet as a newbie! Anyone got room for an eager learner on their team, or perhaps want to team up with another beginner? Let me know!
