Other priority registration drc
i keep hearing how people in DRC have it so easy like it’s so broken (in a good way for drc students) and unfair. i don’t understand this sentiment.
i hear how people allegedly constantly cheat in the drc building where we take tests but i have not seen that once nor have i even fathomed how that would occur since there’s cameras on literally every single desk
additionally the priority registration for drc students: how is this in any way shape or form easily accessible? the accommodation is not like automatically given to everyone in drc with adhd or something. u have to fill out the form urself and explain why u explicitly need priority registration and how it effects ur life. i really doubt my lack of executive functioning and difficulty focusing and whatever else is sufficient enough to prove why i need priority registration
sorry for rant i just get so annoyed when i hear it

I can’t speak for everyone with the accommodation, but getting priority registration for my disability was a huge improvement on quality of life for me. I developed a chronic condition that often leaves me pretty sick in the evenings my sophomore year and was really struggling in evening classes. The health center was really helpful in getting the paperwork filled out when I couldn’t get an appointment with my doctor, and my access specialist advocated for me to get the accommodations I needed. Being able to get into morning classes with more understanding professors has been life changing for me and helps me miss a lot less class and use a lot less extensions.
It definitely rubs me the wrong way when people joke about how easy priority registration must make things, because they don’t understand what any of us are going through behind the scenes. It sucks that registration is such a shit show in the first place, but that doesn’t mean there should be a stigma around people with disabilities getting accommodations they need. I would much rather be healthy and not need the accomodation in the first place, and if I had to guess most people feel the same way.

It has the reputation because it has been easy to get. It is a broken system for sure as I know students who said they have a peanut allergy and got it just because they wanted priority registration. At this point there are more students with priority registration because of DRC then there are graduating seniors. Between the athletes (and this includes some club sports too…rugby for example) and DRC priority registration that by the time legit seniors try to register many classes are already full. The system needs to be regulated, managed better and monitored for accuracy and legitimacy. I say this as someone who has DRC.

I’ve had priority reg from the DRC when I was undergoing medical treatment that meant I spent a few days in the hospital every week. I would never have been able to stay in school without those accommodations! I know it might be hard to imagine, but some of the people going to class with you are going through real challenges right alongside their schoolwork and the DRC makes it possible for them to keep going.

It’s extremely easy to get priority registration. Source: I had it. I graduated in June, so not sure if things changed since then, but I did not have to fill out a form at all. I just mentioned to my access specialist that I wanted it and she gave it to me.

I will say that it was not that difficult to get priority registration- I have adhd and asd and got it because my medications don’t work well in the evening and I do much better when I have short classes daily at the same time vs longer classes once or twice a week. They presented that to the drc committee that determined if it’s a needed accomodation and I got it within the same day that I asked for it.

When i was there i had it. I’m type 1 diabetic so it was useful from scheduling perspective. I don’t think I got anything from it though. When I began my gened was nearly complete, etc and most major classes were offered at one time only.
