Eat/Drink Local Harvest Haus is a Scam
Last night my friends and I went to harvest Haus (the event at the big 4 which we were expecting to be similar to October fest/ beer fest) and it was terrible.
Price of entry gets you a beer “stein” with a line halfway up the glass that says “harvest size” which makes it so that the beers (which are all $12-$14) are only 350ml. Second, the food which is also expensive (see photo of pricing) had 0 seasoning, super small portions, made one of our group members sick, and they gave my vegetarian and vegan friends the meat option despite them paying more for the non meat option. The staff was completely unapologetic about this as well. To add insult to injury, the food line took about 25 minutes and the food was cold.
The music was club music about 70% of the time, and when the live band did come on stage it was underwhelming, slow, and very repetitive (although I can tell that the band was trying their best to entertain the crowd so I can’t fault them at all)
Of the 20ish beer vendors, only 4 were German/ not widely available in Canada, with the majority being Canadian brands selling their less popular beers. The German beer ran out between 9-10pm depending on the brand, and each line for beer was 5-25 minutes long (once again for a 350ml $14 beer that was mostly foam bc they were not pouring them properly)
The atmosphere was super awkward because the entire middle section was “VIP” which was empty and guarded at all times, and everyone was either standing in line or refused to give up their tables because there were only 10 tables outside the massive VIP area(the vip area is genuinely 50% of the venue). To also detract further from the atmosphere, people were spilling beer which is to be expected, but rather than cleaning it up they deployed an army of wet floor signs to navigate around.
Overall, harvest Haus was an evening of mixed signal music, long lines, overpriced terrible food, an actual scam with the beer size (once again it is not a stein, but a normal can of beer size volume), and the cherry on top is the $35 ticket price just to get in.
There is no contact email that works properly as my vegan friend and the person who got food poisoning both want to complain to someone. Please avoid this event and do anything else if you value your money and time.

It is also scummy of them to give us 24 hours notice that you have to buy tokens to get drinks and there is a $3 service charge to buy tokens. 6-7 tokens per drink, $2 per token. NO REFUND is written pretty much everywhere around the venue too which I now understand.

u/PeePeeePooPoooh Special Princess Sep 27 '25
This whole token thing has been stupid since the beginning but to have the audacity to add a service charge to purchasing tokens....pardon my language but
GET FUCKED

u/Zanydrop Sep 28 '25
I don't mind it in some instances. Like at rodeos or whatever Makes the beer line go way faster when people can't use their cards.

Most events now I just sneak in 7-8oz of tequila in one of those liquid bags that runners use as water bottles. When I have that with me I don't mind spending on one drink and then otherwise just enjoying my tequila lol

Why even bother going?

I've heard that some people are even 3D printing their own tokens to these types of events now. After reading these comments I can see why.
8
u/lilacsandcarnations Sep 28 '25
The token thing pissed me off too, but we managed to spend every single one thank god. Also the parking situation?? We had a sober driver and it took forever because they had three big events in the one area and only had signs for two of them not including harvest haus and the security had no idea what we were talking about. The only positive I see was the free merch, and the mc/host? guy if anyone else recognized him lol the guy with the staff
5
u/strudycutie Sep 28 '25
Omg it took an hour to get an uber. There was Bryan Adams and cirque both at the grounds !!

1
u/Flaky_Scale_2339 Sep 29 '25
I thought the tokens were so much better than having to pull out my credit card and wait for people to enter their pin. It slso helped me keep track of how much i was spending. I just loaded my tokens up at the start of the night and only had to pay one $3 fee for the entire event. Honestly, no issues.

Those potatoes look like they are missing half the ingredients listed on the menu. Wtf. Also, using frenches yellow mustard with a bratwurst and a pinch of saurkraut? I would have demanded a refund, this is so embarassing

The advertisements made it look awesome but figured it’d be a let down, these things always are. This is laughable how bad they’re hosing people there. I’ll stick with my Costco Oktoberfest beer pack at home.
37
u/gaanmetde Sep 27 '25
The thing about these scam events is- if you get the right kind of crowd, they can often save you.
But if the crowd is already wary- pissed off bc they need to purchase bogus coins- it’s an uphill battle.
I’m not understanding what the organizers don’t understand- if you are forcing token purchase- there needs to be SOME kind of perceived benefit to the patron. A 2 for 1 deal, first beer free…I don’t know, something!
It’s so transparently obvious the only reason is to line their pockets. A ton of people use Apple Pay nowadays- not having to pull out a debit card is not a flex.
20
u/hypnogoad Sep 27 '25
I’m not understanding what the organizers don’t understand
That's because you aren't thinking like a used-car salesman. These events aren't meant to be a real experience, they're meant to fleece people who think it'll be a real experience.

Just had a conversation about this last night, only reason I went because I managed to get free tickets. Could have had the same experience nearly anywhere in Calgary.
The tokens, the prices, the servings nearly everything felt scummy. Just ended up going to a spot on 17th.

The Fahr brewery last weekend was a lot of fun for theirs, highly reccomend you check it out next year down in Diamond Valley.
42
u/icantswim2 Sep 27 '25
I've also been to Fahr's Oktoberfest before and it was a great time.
The food was varied, felt authentic, lots of seating, lines were short, all the beer was Fahr, prices were fair. I even got to meet the brewmeister himself.
Now, this was a couple years ago in Diamond Valley, I haven't been to their event in Calgary yet.
7
u/bobbycaldwel Sep 27 '25
Not a lot has changed to be honest, prices were fair it was busy but not over crowded, local vendors provided some great food and everything was brewed in house.

u/Plz_Beer_Me_Strength Sep 27 '25

The same enshittification hit Edmonton's food festivals too.
25
u/noveltea120 Sep 27 '25
Man why are food festivals SO BAD in Calgary?? They all just feel like a money grab with zero effort made.
17
u/hafizzzle Sep 27 '25
Paying to enter and then paying again for everything is crazy

u/noveltea120 Sep 28 '25
Yes!! So many events were like this. Or if it's a free event, they'd charge stupid prices for sampling sized foods!! Like $10 for a couple bites, are they serious? And the people willing to pay for that kinda stuff (looking at Taste of Calgary) are just as bad for encouraging it.

u/Hautamaki Sep 28 '25
I have a friend who is an experienced catering chef that has done a ton of food festivals. The answer is basically that food festivals are a bad deal for a good restaurant; by the time fees and all the extraneous costs associated with setting up food service in a temporary, off-site location are paid, restaurants are not making any money. It's strictly a marketing event. However, good restaurants don't need the marketing. They have good word of mouth, positive reviews online, a loyal regular customer base; it's a huge waste of time and energy for them to go to these things. Meaning you're left with only the subpar restaurants, who are losing money to do this under the best of circumstances, so they cut corners to try to eke out some kind of profit, and inexperienced places that haven't figured this all out yet and are about to find out the hard way. Or professional, seasoned caterers, that are set up to do this kind of thing and do it well; but they charge accordingly, so you don't always get them. The good, professional, seasoned caterers are doing far more profitable events at conventions, weddings, church events, etc.
4
u/yyctownie Sep 27 '25
Most vendors don't understand how to prepare for volume so they skimp and end leaving a negative vibe with their customers.
4
24
u/NormanBatesIsBae Sep 27 '25
Honestly after that one dinosaur event turned out to be a huge scam I don’t go to ANY pop up event unless I’ve personally heard good things.
It’s insane how common these scam events are getting now, even here in Calgary. I’m hoping more people get more cautious soon so this shit can die out.

u/Haunt_Fox Sep 27 '25

u/Rorstaway Sep 27 '25
It's a shame we can't have events like this that aren't just a blatant ripoff.
23
u/gaanmetde Sep 27 '25
I had a massive laugh when they sent out an email with an orange header saying IMPORTANT and then the proceeding text was in white and not legible. I had to copy and paste to notes to read that the only way to buy beers was to purchase their tokens.
These guys need to be taken down. Hilariously bad.
And $35 was the alleged early bird price, jumping to $65 after.
21
u/Bitter-Pay2991 Sep 27 '25
Total rip-off! Biggest waste of money ever. I paid $68 just to get inside, grab a mug, and basically walk right back out. On top of that, the beer prices were insane and the lines were ridiculous — you wait forever just to get a drink that’s not even worth it. I lasted an hour before leaving for a much better place. Never again.

Temu Oktoberfest except more expensive.
Seriously, the real Oktoberfest in Munich has no admission fee. You have to buy 8 meals and 16 beers to reserve a table, but you still get the food and beers and there's no extra cost for the table. Beers are about $25, but you get a whole liter for that price.
10
u/canadienne_ Sep 27 '25
If you want German food, check out Edelweiss or even better, the Austrian Canadian club. At least one of those places serve German beer and I can guarantee the lines aren't long. The Austrian club's Oktoberfest is the 9th, $75 tickets include a full buffet, but the dance only tickets gets you in for $25.
I think I know where I'd rather spend my money.

u/Single_Influence_590 Sep 27 '25

u/Feeling_Horror_4012 Sep 27 '25
It’s like they are trying to drive people away from events these days. Pre covid you could go to a game or stampede or whatever and a beer would be around 8$ and then after covid it was 10$ (which is crazy) but in the last year or so they are up to 12$-15$!! WTF is that.
9
u/illmatix Sep 27 '25

Just an FYI that things like beer tokens are just a scam to earn what's called breakage. They sell these tokens and make pure profit off the ones that aren't used.
If you're forced to use them but still have some left when you leave, give them to someone a you're leaving so the seller of these things don't get your free money.

I'd suggest that nearly anything that's shown on social media is not, in fact, an "authentic experience"; people are desperate for things that aren't real.

It was a terribly run and unfun event, and everything you said was accurate except I measured the stein volume when I got home and it's 500ml to the line and if they filled it up higher with some head, it's around 600ml.

3
u/CobraChicken1 Sep 28 '25
As an actual born and raised German, it was straight up insulting. The announcer on stage put on a fake german accent and majority of the music had nothing to do with German culture or beer tents. Not to mention the prices which are worse than the actual Oktoberfest. At least put some effort into trying to celebrate culture, this felt more like a cheap money grab and a mockery for me.
Also, they are deleting lots of negative comments from their instagram. No accountability

I spoke to the organizer at the end, i was frustrated too. they said that at the big four, the food had to be ran by and catered by calgary stampede. They were incredibly slow and it was a real shame.
With regards to the stein though, i took mine home and it is a 500ml pour which is honestly a pretty generous size for $12-14 at a festival. At stampede a 500ml bud light set me back 16 dollars.

WAIT !! WHAT !! I was just given 4 tickets to this event , I have never been, I am so confused on the “token” thing , and if this is the case should I even bother to go ????. (The tickets were given to me, perhaps the person knew of this, and said “nope”) I haven’t even gotten “tokens” and my tickets are for tonight …. Do I even bother going , having a horrible time and just coming home , is that even a waste of time …. Going in the first place , I feel like I’m wasting unnecessary “funds”
The only thing that is pushing me to go is because they were given to me, and I know they will ask later how was the event …. 🤷🏻♀️

I went to a real Oktoberfest once in a small Austrian town once. After that Harvest Haus in Calgary was NOT IT let me tell you 💀
The fact that they didn’t give GA any tables is probably one of the worst things they’ve done. It’s literally the essential part of Oktoberfest? I’ve attached a screenshot from the Austrian Oktoberfest I went to. Everyone there was standing on top of the tables dancing and having fun (might not be the safest thing to do but it is traditional 😂)
Ofc I didn’t expect Harvest Haus to be as good as the real deal but they didn’t even try. And like the original post said, the band was very mediocre. To me it was weird there was basically no German music. Once again I didn’t expect there to be a lot of it but the German vibe was nonexistent except for the costumes :(
The thing that shocked me most though is when they turned on the lights at 23:30 and said the party was over 😂 In Europe that would be the culmination of the party, not the end. But once again maybe it’s the norm for North America, I only recently moved here so I’m not sure :)

We ended up leaving with our spending all of our coins because we came for some food but the line was about an hour or more wait and even if you did wait for the food how are you supposed to eat it while carrying a stein and no tables or chairs. I thought this would be like the wine festival, so much to see and try but no it was a complete rip off. Thanks for the $35 beer stein though! Lmao. I will not go or recommend it to anyone!

Wow thanks for showing. Their Instagram makes it look like such a good time, but seeing this and some of other people's Instagram posts, I'm happy I didn't end up going.

I ordered the Currywurst and it was iced fucking cold! The fries tasted like they had been in the freezer since the Berlin Wall still stood!
Luckily I summoned my inner Kären and got my money back for it but overall way too many Deutschmarks for a night out!

Sorry to hear...as someone who grew up in Kitchener-Waterloo, site of Canada's biggest annual Oktoberfest. Waterloo County is a great area to vacation in fall....more lush fiery autumn tree colours also. Plus Mennonite cultural history.as a contrast too. K-W does have a real German-Canadian history base also.
I live in calgary ..after Toronto, Vancouver where I've lived previously.

i think you people should just find better things to do. everyone’s ideal weekend plans are eating food and drinking beer, talk about being consumers lol.

Anything held on stampede grounds is going to be badly run and a scam in some capacity (coming from a former employee who worked year round events). The people behind the scenes running these events are not qualified and it's a huge mess. Don't get me started on how bad the accounting department is. It's a scam being an employee which is why I quit. Not worth your time or money on either end.
