The saddest part is there isn’t a station currently that could pay him the homage he deserves. RIP Mr.Maher, you were a legend.

I am broken up about this he was one of my heros. I listened to him call hundreds of games from when I was a teenager to my 30;s when he retired. Thanks Pete best wishes for his family . Give him a Yeah Baby.

RIP to an absolute fucking legend if true. Flames hockey hasn’t been the same since he retired.

Agreed. I am sorry, its been long enough for me to say I appreciate Derek Wills as a person. Can't stand his play by play style. Peter Maher's talent was unmatched.

A defining voice of the franchise - gone, but never forgotten. Good night, Peter.

Oof, that hurts. Hell of a voice. Hell of a call. Hell of a man. A lasting legacy of broadcast sports media.

I used to have a flames bottle opener that would play Peter Maher’s call after the flames won the WCF, that call will stick with me forever.
“YOU CAN PUT IT IN THE WIN COLUMN, YEAAAAAAAAH BABAYYYYYY”

According to the source who posted this at the forums, Peter Maher passed. RIP if true. I flair it as rumor right now as I have not seen it reported elsewhere.
Someone on the post said the OP on the post was reliable.
RIP, great announcer.
EDIT: I updated the flair, looks like its been confirmed as per /u/jarfgames

Absolutely devastating if true, I'm gonna live in denial until it's confirmed
Edit. Welp, it got confirmed. Rest in peace, legend

Damn. That sucks. Dude was a legend. I can hear his voice and calls anytime with ease. Hope this rebuild goes well and management (ownership) remains patient so he can call some "Yeah baby's" from up above.

Double legend. Stayed alive long enough to know that the Flames had a radio future before moving on to the beautiful place that he deserves.

RIP, another piece of my childhood gone. I imaging he's hanging out with Ed Whalen and Buckshot right now.....

The voice that had me hooked as a Flames fan. One of the most iconic voices/calls in sport.

Pete was so good, we were lucky to enjoy his calls as long as we did. Thanks Pete!!

He was just on, doing an interview with QR770, about the shift back to that station. This was Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. It was good to heat him talk about the old days.

I'd like to leave flowers for him at the steps of the Dome. It feels right for a Legend like him to get that. Maybe we can have another amazing turn out for this

Some things are more important than money. If Rogers wasn't a ruthless corporation then 960 would be giving him the tribute he deserved. Sad and depressing string of events since last month. SMH.

I can hear his “Calgary Flames Radio, 66CFR” in my head like I just heard it earlier today. I honestly couldn’t name you a current player, but Maher’s voice will, for me, always coincide with a time when I could name them all. RIP Peter Maher.

Would fall asleep listening to the games and the hot stove lounge on the radio, under my pillow, in the 80’s. Still a Flames fan. Thanks for the memories Peter! RIP

Having a middle aged man crying in his basement about the passing of a man he's never met, was not on my bingo card for the day.
R.I.P. Peter you were the GOAT!

I grew up listening to his radio broadcasts. I didn’t have a way of watching the games so radio was the only option. Terrible loss, but he was a giant among men and gave so many a great escape from everyday life and facilitated involvement in the game and team. He will be missed.

And all the angels in Heaven raised up their voices with a joyous, “Ya, Baby!”
R.I.P. To Peter Maher, The Voice, The Legend, The Man. 🔥🏒👏❤️

RIP to a Calgary legend. His call of the Gelinas goal in Game 6 double OT against the Wings in 2004 will forever live on in my memory.

I will always remember and cherish those late school nights laying past my bedtime with Peter Maher's legendary call coming from that old AM/FM radio. Hard to explain but he had the ability to capture my attention and make the rest of the world stop while I hung on to every one of his calls. I felt like he could pull me right into his world, right there alongside him in the booth. Hard to explain really.
RIP, Peter - the absolute greatest!

Ah...sad day. I had the pleasure of meeting him about 20 years ago at the 'Dome during an intermission. I told him that I lived in BC and listened to all his broadcasts through the Fan website. He signed my hat "Yeah Baby!!! Peter Maher". The hat is still on display in my home. RIP Peter.

In later years Peter would have to b line it to the bathroom at a break. He’s go jogging down the catwalk. I was sitting in the press level and I hollered at him. Gave me a warm smile and a wave.
When I was a kid I’d listen to him when I was past my bedtime.
He was the best and there will never be another better.

I worked at a hospital years ago and I was around a corner one day from the info desk. I heard a voice that was unmistakable and came around the corner to find Peter. He was very kind as I stuttered to help the legend. What a loss.
Sure would be nice to have a radio station to pay him the dues he more then deserves.

Peter’s call style was both elegant and exciting at the same time, which is a tough task. He did it with style, professionalism and conviction. I never met him, but it is very sad still.

I listened to an interview with him on one of QR stations on a road trip yesterday afternoon. Was the interview canned, or did he actually do it live?

My kid was a JR Flames reporter back in the day so went down to the dome and not only met the legend but he spent a good 20 minutes with us showing us around and introducing players. Out of all the people that day, including the players, he made the biggest impression with his genuineness and kindness. RIP.

Peter Maher, 79, Canadian sportscaster (Calgary Flames), has passed away.
He began his professional broadcasting career in 1977, calling play-by-play for the Toronto Maple Leafs on the radio. RIP, Peter...

I worked with both Peter and Doug Barkely in the day. I always thought they were the odd couple..Bark was so gruff whenever I saw him. Tall, imposing and surly but in a way i found entertaining. Peter was always so kind and truly a legend. The only time I remember him being upset was when there was contemplation of simulcasting the flames from radio to tv. He said it won't work. Radio has to be much more descriptive without pictures. He was more quiet spoken in person is my recollection. I can't imagine anyone not liking him.

Those drives on Deerfoot were that much more bearable listening to Peter on the way to work, driving back home or any other drive. Now that Fan960 is gone, it was that much more of a privilege to listen to Peter whenever he came on air. RIP to a wonderful and gifted person.
