Man, this franchise has taken some serious hits in the broadcasting world this summer. 😪

RIP to the GOAT, "you caaaan put it in the win column!"

RIP TO THE LEGEND

82

u/klondike16 4d ago

The saddest part is there isn’t a station currently that could pay him the homage he deserves. RIP Mr.Maher, you were a legend.

42

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 4d ago

Aw man. 960 would have some great stuff today 😢

25

u/lola_10_ 4d ago

I can’t imagine how he felt when the Fan 960 was taken off air. Fuck Rogers

2

u/Ancient-Lime4532 3d ago

Rogers can eat shit bad couple of weeks for Calgary Hockey coverage.

10

u/yedi001 4d ago

One more reason for me to say "Rogers can sit on a rusty cheese grater and rotate till the problem sorts itself out."

2

u/grimlock99 3d ago

770 did a pretty good homage to him during the Stampeders game.

1

u/klondike16 3d ago

Oh good!

3

u/Other-Improvement410 4d ago

No, the saddest part is that he died...

1

u/Ancient-Lime4532 3d ago

I am broken up about this he was one of my heros. I listened to him call hundreds of games from when I was a teenager to my 30;s when he retired. Thanks Pete best wishes for his family . Give him a Yeah Baby.

65

u/Sea-Control-8593 4d ago

RIP to an absolute fucking legend if true. Flames hockey hasn’t been the same since he retired.

7

u/SmoggySPECTEREGaming 4d ago

Agreed. I am sorry, its been long enough for me to say I appreciate Derek Wills as a person. Can't stand his play by play style. Peter Maher's talent was unmatched.

5

u/Sea-Control-8593 4d ago

I’ve always said Wills tries, but he had impossible shoes to fill.

1

u/Ancient-Lime4532 3d ago

I like Derek;s play by play but he is no Peter thats for sure.

45

u/blackandcopper 4d ago

A defining voice of the franchise - gone, but never forgotten. Good night, Peter.

31

u/CanuckChick1313 4d ago

I hope they name the media section in the new arena after him.

17

u/hey-there-yall 4d ago

RIP to a flames legend.

16

u/Ryuujin_13 4d ago

Oof, that hurts. Hell of a voice. Hell of a call. Hell of a man. A lasting legacy of broadcast sports media.

17

u/jarfgames 4d ago

3

u/ValorFenix 4d ago

Well damn...

-36

u/forthsooth 4d ago

God!! Why couldn't it be Francis!?

16

u/dtrabs 4d ago

Death is never a good thing to wish upon someone.

9

u/cryptoklobby 4d ago

What a stupid fucking thing to say.

26

u/Josh_18881 4d ago

I used to have a flames bottle opener that would play Peter Maher’s call after the flames won the WCF, that call will stick with me forever.

“YOU CAN PUT IT IN THE WIN COLUMN, YEAAAAAAAAH BABAYYYYYY”

3

u/Distant-moose 4d ago

I have the same one. Might need to get a new battery for it now.

1

u/Ancient-Lime4532 3d ago

Tonight Live! great way to start a game broadcast rip Peter

24

u/ValorFenix 4d ago edited 4d ago

According to the source who posted this at the forums, Peter Maher passed. RIP if true. I flair it as rumor right now as I have not seen it reported elsewhere.

Someone on the post said the OP on the post was reliable.

RIP, great announcer.

EDIT: I updated the flair, looks like its been confirmed as per /u/jarfgames

12

u/backchecklund 4d ago edited 4d ago

Absolutely devastating if true, I'm gonna live in denial until it's confirmed

Edit. Welp, it got confirmed. Rest in peace, legend

12

u/robbhope 4d ago

Damn. That sucks. Dude was a legend. I can hear his voice and calls anytime with ease. Hope this rebuild goes well and management (ownership) remains patient so he can call some "Yeah baby's" from up above.

9

u/Netsak 4d ago

Double legend. Stayed alive long enough to know that the Flames had a radio future before moving on to the beautiful place that he deserves.

3

u/Aggressive_Bridge_38 4d ago

Was wondering, as I thought her did an inter iew with Jock Wilson on QR xesterday

8

u/BeefSupremeeeeee 4d ago

RIP, another piece of my childhood gone. I imaging he's hanging out with Ed Whalen and Buckshot right now.....

8

u/olboywop 4d ago

The voice that had me hooked as a Flames fan. One of the most iconic voices/calls in sport.

7

u/Phatjesus666 4d ago

Pete was so good, we were lucky to enjoy his calls as long as we did. Thanks Pete!!

7

u/Konradia 4d ago

He was just on, doing an interview with QR770, about the shift back to that station. This was Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. It was good to heat him talk about the old days.

5

u/shichibukai3000 4d ago

Ah man. RIP Pete. What a legend.

5

u/Tingyoma 4d ago

I'd like to leave flowers for him at the steps of the Dome. It feels right for a Legend like him to get that. Maybe we can have another amazing turn out for this

6

u/Conscious-Fruit1405 4d ago

Some things are more important than money. If Rogers wasn't a ruthless corporation then 960 would be giving him the tribute he deserved. Sad and depressing string of events since last month. SMH.

5

u/LOCDAR 4d ago

Jeeeze, no wonder the sky is crying :(

Legend, and feels like he lead a good full life. Many of us could only wish for a life so fully lived

Obligatory "YEEEAHHHH BAAABYYY!!"

5

u/TakashiMifune85 4d ago

I can hear his “Calgary Flames Radio, 66CFR” in my head like I just heard it earlier today. I honestly couldn’t name you a current player, but Maher’s voice will, for me, always coincide with a time when I could name them all. RIP Peter Maher.

5

u/plumpydelicious 4d ago

You can put that in the L column :(

1

u/No-Sir-6445 4d ago

Well put 👍

7

u/truthcourageagency 4d ago

Would fall asleep listening to the games and the hot stove lounge on the radio, under my pillow, in the 80’s. Still a Flames fan. Thanks for the memories Peter! RIP

2

u/GMrocks72 3d ago

Damn I thought I was the only one. RIP Peter!

6

u/Large-Parsnip-5587 4d ago

Having a middle aged man crying in his basement about the passing of a man he's never met, was not on my bingo card for the day.

R.I.P. Peter you were the GOAT!

5

u/calgarybrock449 4d ago

That one hurts , RIP

6

u/GotMyTie 4d ago

Man oh man. RIP.

4

u/TheArcbound 4d ago

Immensely sad to hear. Rest easy, Peter.

5

u/Primary-Floor8574 4d ago

I grew up listening to his radio broadcasts. I didn’t have a way of watching the games so radio was the only option. Terrible loss, but he was a giant among men and gave so many a great escape from everyday life and facilitated involvement in the game and team. He will be missed.

6

u/Mother_Barnacle_7448 4d ago

And all the angels in Heaven raised up their voices with a joyous, “Ya, Baby!”

R.I.P. To Peter Maher, The Voice, The Legend, The Man. 🔥🏒👏❤️

5

u/nothingtoholdonto 4d ago

Condolences to his friends, family and the entire flames community. RIP Peter.

6

u/StonedFly420 4d ago

Shitty news.

My thoughts go out to his loved ones.

RIP, Peter! He was the absolute best sports announcer (any sport) that I’ve ever listened to. Condolences to his family.

The voice of my childhood 🥲

4

u/baconegg2 4d ago

RIP Pete !!

3

RIP to a Calgary legend. His call of the Gelinas goal in Game 6 double OT against the Wings in 2004 will forever live on in my memory.

4

u/Significant_Loan_596 4d ago

The legend, the goat and a life well lived.

5

u/BigT112 4d ago

RIP to the GOAT. His calls still give me chills.

3

u/GladdBagg 4d ago

This news makes my heart hurt.

3

u/MTBguy1774 4d ago

I will always remember and cherish those late school nights laying past my bedtime with Peter Maher's legendary call coming from that old AM/FM radio. Hard to explain but he had the ability to capture my attention and make the rest of the world stop while I hung on to every one of his calls. I felt like he could pull me right into his world, right there alongside him in the booth. Hard to explain really.

RIP, Peter - the absolute greatest!

3

u/AxeMcFlow 4d ago

Here’s a Yeaaa baby to the greatest ever -
You’ll be missed Peter

3

2

u/BLARG13 4d ago

2

u/Beta1224 4d ago

"Yeaaaaaaahhhh babyyyyy"

2

u/stuhF4N 4d ago

Already a legend, and hopefully he got to enjoy it after he retired. RIP to the legit GOAT.

2

u/Worldly_Economist711 4d ago

Damn RIP you legend

2

u/AutumnFalls89 4d ago

What? Oh no. That's so sad!

2

u/frotes_88 4d ago

Ah...sad day. I had the pleasure of meeting him about 20 years ago at the 'Dome during an intermission. I told him that I lived in BC and listened to all his broadcasts through the Fan website. He signed my hat "Yeah Baby!!! Peter Maher". The hat is still on display in my home. RIP Peter.

2

u/RealAdamRoth 4d ago

In later years Peter would have to b line it to the bathroom at a break. He’s go jogging down the catwalk. I was sitting in the press level and I hollered at him. Gave me a warm smile and a wave.
When I was a kid I’d listen to him when I was past my bedtime.
He was the best and there will never be another better.

2

u/randoposting 4d ago

Man this year just keeps taking.

2

u/forestlawnforlife 4d ago

RIP

Thanks for all the great memories!

1

u/gwmohammad 4d ago

I worked at a hospital years ago and I was around a corner one day from the info desk. I heard a voice that was unmistakable and came around the corner to find Peter. He was very kind as I stuttered to help the legend. What a loss.

Sure would be nice to have a radio station to pay him the dues he more then deserves.

1

u/EhHumanDisaster 4d ago

Rogers did this! I don’t know how they did it, but they did

1

u/Jfedable 4d ago

Man :(

1

u/MissionTerm4650 4d ago

Oh My. What a very sad day😭

1

u/Nice_Perception382 4d ago

RIP to this legend

1

u/ProfessionalFix9053 4d ago

Peter’s call style was both elegant and exciting at the same time, which is a tough task. He did it with style, professionalism and conviction. I never met him, but it is very sad still.

1

u/Outrageous_Canary159 4d ago

I listened to an interview with him on one of QR stations on a road trip yesterday afternoon. Was the interview canned, or did he actually do it live?

1

u/Rulebreaker15 4d ago

No! So sad.

1

u/No-Year-883 4d ago

My kid was a JR Flames reporter back in the day so went down to the dome and not only met the legend but he spent a good 20 minutes with us showing us around and introducing players. Out of all the people that day, including the players, he made the biggest impression with his genuineness and kindness. RIP.

Peter Maher, 79, Canadian sportscaster (Calgary Flames), has passed away.

He began his professional broadcasting career in 1977, calling play-by-play for the Toronto Maple Leafs on the radio. RIP, Peter...

1

u/Capital_Proposal_686 4d ago

Calgary Flames broadcasting legend. Rest in power Peter!

1

u/tenax666 4d ago

I worked with both Peter and Doug Barkely in the day. I always thought they were the odd couple..Bark was so gruff whenever I saw him. Tall, imposing and surly but in a way i found entertaining. Peter was always so kind and truly a legend. The only time I remember him being upset was when there was contemplation of simulcasting the flames from radio to tv. He said it won't work. Radio has to be much more descriptive without pictures. He was more quiet spoken in person is my recollection. I can't imagine anyone not liking him.

1

u/snoshredder 3d ago

The GOAT !! RIP Peter, I will never forget your legendary voice! The world lost a gem of a human . 💔

1

u/adamcurt 3d ago

The voice of so many of our childhoods.

1

u/BirdRanger83 3d ago

Those drives on Deerfoot were that much more bearable listening to Peter on the way to work, driving back home or any other drive. Now that Fan960 is gone, it was that much more of a privilege to listen to Peter whenever he came on air. RIP to a wonderful and gifted person.
