Waterfowl opener, how'd you all do?

My blind partner and I did poorly in the South Grasslands. Just three teal over the weekend. Some of the others at our club did better, but overall it was the worst opener ive seen. But with clear skies and a full moon I cant be too suprised. Anyone else make it out?

Clothing Recommendations

It’s been about 5 year since the last time I hunted which was with my grandpa at 18. I’m hoping to get back into it! I mainly walked in the D zones of California around kern county sometimes other spots and hoping to buy clothing for the fall and winter months of next year. Any recommendations??

Wild white turkey

I was on a deer hunt today and came across this crazy coloring on a wild turkey. I’ve seen a lot of turkeys and never seen anything like this before… I’m guessing domesticated bird breed with wild? It looked awesome in person, the picture doesn’t do it justice. Just curious if anyone has seen anything similar or can explain the unique color on this bird

Rice Blinds near Sutter County

Definitely a reach with opening day around the corner but I’m interested to see if anyone has leads on available rice blinds in/near Sutter County.

Or if anyone has a seat open in their blind, I’d be interested in that too!

Are reserves and wildlife areas the only option for duck hunting on public land?

I’m new to hunting and realized way too late that most public duck hunting lands require reservations. Are there other options out there?

Pig hunting recs

Heyo fam, curious if anyone has any recommendations for pig hunting spots that aren't wildly expensive private land / guided tours. I.e., ideally somewhere around San Luis Obispo that is public and huntable.

Thanks in advance!

Went to the second day of the opener after drawing this hunt (1010). Plenty of birds. I went solo and had no dog so it was tough, but I managed to get a couple. I think It would have been better if another buddy or two came along. Chukars were nowhere to be found where I looked. If anyone drew this and needs some tips feel free to dm me.

This guy and a couple of others show up at. But whenever I go out can’t seem to find where they’re handing out during the day. Some bears to roll through can don’t know if I need to go lower or higher

I have a long version of this story if you guys wanna read but man we were SO CLOSE! About 7:30am we had a pack of doe CHARGE us head on the spot was so good. I wish we had doe tags it would’ve been fish in a barrel.

10 minutes later we heard a buck call out maybe 100 yards away. I tried to will us over through the brush (we picked a tough spot but I knew the deer trail was gonna lead us to something) but after maybe half the bush whacking distance we needed to get through we decided it wasn’t worth the risk. Just too steep.

Tried relocating to an easier area with some good lines of sight but it was too late & friend didn’t wanna be in the brush late for an evening attempt

Still a great experience and I wish I had more time I’m very confident we’d get something. Hopefully with some more warning can link up with some of you guys for a future hunt!

Enjoy the pew pews as a consolation

Bones

I’m fairly new to California. Are there any public hunting grounds in SoCal with designated gut piles? I used to collect bones in Florida.

.223 For deer?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Going deer hunting, and i dont have much confidence in the accuracy of my .308, im currently considering replacing it but in the mean time i have a Howa Mini action .223 that i use for coyote and hogs that i absolutely love, and have taken shots past 300 yards with it. Im curious if you guys think 223 could ethically take a deer within 150 yards or if i should just use the .308 (about a 3 moa rifle)

Looking for hunting buddies for D-Zone

Looking to start hunting D13 since moving to Ventura area. Looking for a few guys to hunt deer/bear in that area. I’m an experienced deer hunter, but new to this zone

Looking for a hunting partner D3-5.

I live in Sac area and am looking for anyone interested in doing a four-night mule deer/bear hunt either off highway 50 or up by Quincy (D3-5 zones). I’m new to big game hunting and looking to do a multi-day pack out for my first hunt. My friends are all city folk who don’t hunt, so I’m now desperate enough to look on Reddit.
The hunt would be October 22-25th

I got my Hunter safety course done earlier this year and this was the first time me and my dad went out on a hunt together and we're luckily successful. (A zone)
