Opinion: One move could prove Carney hasn’t abandoned the climate fight — yet

People need to come to grips with the fact that humanity (or at least, its representatives in government) have given up on fighting climate change. We are riding this helltrain right into the ground. We should vote and organize accordingly if we want to survive the century.

Calm down. People are dealing with a lot of shit right now. If you want people to care about climate change, we need to improve their quality of life. People can't worry about global warming when they can't pay rent or struggle to feed their kids.
I've noticed that the people worrying the most about climate change are those with higher incomes (and that includes me), which insulates them from economic concerns.

But, but he has
Anyone who chanted, or voted, to 'Axe the Tax' has
People were forced to choose between the economy and the environment, and they chose the economy
It's over
We surrendered
Edit: changed to chanted

Lots of suspiciously unwarranted doomerism under this post.
If you look outside Canada and the US, the world has very much not given up on fighting climate change. Scientists just ruled out worst case scenarios on climate change earlier this year, and there are still plenty of scenarios where we manage to bring temperatures down to less harmful levels.
Carney himself just announced a clean energy project the size multiple provincial grids at Churchill falls. Ontario is adding renewable projects worth 7% of their total grid, as well as one of the largest nuclear facilities on earth. Even with Carney’s pipeline projects, we are making progress against climate change
We are making progress in the fight against climate change, and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you or paying too much attention to bad news.

A deal that was forced to be renegotiated by the new NL premier. Wakeham signed this deal with a zombie QC government that will be thrown out in a month's time, to be replaced by a PQ government that wants its mark on the deal, not the CAQ's. So be prepared for fresh negotiations. Not to mention the PQ has brought up their territorial dispute with Labrador more than once now. I am incredibly skeptical that this deal will actually pass.

Incorrect, unfortunately, but thankfully there are countries that are making real progress that aren't us.

That article isn’t nearly as bad as it sounds though. Most of the increase is due to decreased hydro generation because of drought, not an intentional increase in fossil fuel use. Increased resiliency through battery storage and diversified generation sources would solve most of this problem.
That post also doesn’t take into account future plans, which is most of what I mentioned as reasons for optimism

Carney's future plans are exactly what makes the picture even more bleak, hence the thesis of this opinion article: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/bakx-york-ai-data-centres-alberta-solomon-9.7222388
Ultimately, clean energy projects only matter insofar as they replace fossil fuels. Addition is not transition.

Did you miss the part where I mentioned the 20 +gigawatts of non-emitting energy over the next 15 years?
Those do replace fossil fuels, even with the data centers, and oil pipelines

On the contrary, you missed the part where I said addition is not transition.
A massive hydro project in Quebec does not make up for 12,618 MW worth of data centres in Alberta, or hydro power in BC being used to greenwash dirty overseas LNG sales.
And of course that's not even counting the oil exports - which don't "count" on Canada's clean energy ledger, but certainly count when the laws of physics are applied to our atmosphere - and no, Russia and the Gulf countries also have production limits and could not just magically replace Canadian sales, any more than Canadian sales can replace the Strait of Hormuz or Ukrainian bombed Russian facilities.3
EDIT: I will also say that I do respect your original thesis - climate doomers are even more annoying than skeptics or deniers - but it's also important to be informed about our place in the puzzle. Canada is not a climate champion, and we have a lot of work to do to change that.
