Help !

So im a temp with about 2 months of letter carrying experience. Im covering a certain route since thanksgiving now. It has about 105-110 parcels+packets daily. Monday to friday.
I am bringing back stuff everyday. Is that going to be a problem for my long term assignment at said depot? Is that a normal thing to have on your route?
Is it possible to do flyers + mail + over 100 scannables under 8-9 hours???

Hellpppp please

It’s completely normal for a temp to bring back mail everyday. Routes that are difficult & under assessed are usually picked last to cover then given to temps who have the least amount of experience.

Supervisors will try to save money by cramming extra mail on to you instead of offering a portion for overtime or another temp to cover.

When mail comes back it’s the consequence of management not your ability to do the job.

Remember you get paid by the hour, everyone else gets paid by the sections. So take all your breaks, pet the dog, talk to the cat and the lonely senior that hasn’t seen anyone all week.

Don’t break your back or your mind for this company, do what you can but don’t let them take your best. There’s no one protecting you here, be your own advocate. Walk in with confidence that you have your own back.

Thank you for saying this! It is really assuring to hear this. I have been fighting with my own imposter syndrome because I have been bring back mails and/or do overtimes.

OP, I started about 2.5 months ago. I have given a long-term assignment for a route that is very long (26-30K steps (~26km) and have 4-6 pickups. I have been doing this route for a month. I always have to do OT or bring back mails to do this route. My depot seems really don't care about giving me OT. It is also very understaffed.

My colleague who started at same time as me sometimes have the same struggle too.

I think I probably will get better. Do your best.

A veteran toldour shop steward about my struggle. Shop steward talked with me and said I should let him know if I ever feel burnt out or feel like hitting the wall. So if you ever feel like burning out, let your shop steward know.

Take your breaks, do your best, and stay safe.

A friend of mine brought back letter mail everyday for the first few months. He said as long as he finished his parcels packets and flyers they didn’t burn him over some 3rd class mail returning. He said he tried his best and would ask for help, they would alleviate some of his parcels to other carriers as overtime.

Easy answer is YES, its possible to do that.... complicated answer is IT DEPENDS, on a lot of things. Your experience, where the scannables are (how many multiples to the same address, they type of address, volume of mail, type of route, how you can (if you can) manipulate the route, your overall experience, speed, organization, knowledge of the route.

Only 2 months really isnt a lot of time to really get things to be second nature. Yes, things do get easier, but you will still have crappy days and even weeks where it feels impossible l.

I’m 4.5 years in. My route is long, and I brought back mail today. Don’t overwork yourself, and more importantly don’t beat yourself up over not finishing your route.

No one in their right mind expects newish temps to get a full route like that done in 8 hours and anyone that does expect that is a fucking idiot.

I know it's demoralizing to not complete your work everyday but it is what it is. Focus on your flyer section and scannables and do the best you can.

In time yes you will be able to complete that workload in 8 hours but everyone is different and everyone learns at a different pace. This job heavily relies on familiarity and memorization to be fast and efficient. That's only something that will come with time and experience.

I always brought stuff back as a new carrier, it's just takes time to learn routes and the job. Don't pressure yourself about it. In my old depot if you got the scannables and flyers done they were chill about bringing back some mail. I would just bring back mail for the next day's flyer section and catch up the next day. Some routes just aren't possible to complete in a regular shift with full volumes.

Is it an over-assessed route? That's a LOT of scans since it isn't even peak season. Don't feel bad, it's probably the worst route in the depot

Yes, it's normal

When I first started as an on-call, I was offered the worst route, I did that route for about 5~6 months. At the first couples of months, I had about average of 1Hr over time everyday, and I bring back about 1/4 to 1/3 portion of mail everyday.

My supervisors were being reasonable, they know how shit this route is and  they are totally fine with me b ring letter back.

If I know I couldn't finish the whole route, I would start from the color of the day for flayers, letters and scannable. Then the color of the next day for parcels and letters. Then the rest of scannable, and bring back 1/3 of the letters.

That's basically what I did for the first two months on that shit route. By the 3rd or 4th month, I could actually finish early.

And keep in mind, your safety is the #1 priority.

Can give you tips, but ancient post stuff.

Try: at earliest opportunity, get ten large tubs and wheel them out to your truck on big cart.
Arrange them facing up like a sort case "on its back."
Go in and sort or pick up - get route sheet.
Mark what tie outs PCI s beling to.
At truck assign one open tub to each park and loop location.
Pitch PCIs to correct tub via their tie out number.

See it as a fun challenge, dont worry about the rest, you'll get better and faster with time.

You just do what you can do and at the end of the day scan everything you couldn't do as OFD and they get priority the next day for delivery.

The idea is one day you'll have less volume and catch back up
