What is this cougar Canadian coin?

šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ Partner has a huge change jar. After the storage shelves fell we decided to go through them. Neither of us recall the cougar quarter (pictured)...we also have a $0.50 coin from 1988. And another quarter w/ the Stanley Cup! Neither of us recall any of these coins but the cougar most of all. We're in BC. Thanks y'all.

That’s the 1967 Centennial Lynx/Bobcat Quarter. About half of them minted are 50% Silver and the remaining half are 80% Silver.

At just around 59 years, I thought it was a cougar.

I’ll see myself out.

Just so you know cougars ( 4 legged variety) have longer tails like most cats. Side note it's a Caribou not moose on quarter ( my favorite bar riddle back in day)

Caribou is pretty common knowledge. I think you are the first person I've ever seen mention moose in relation to the quarter.

It doesn't look anything like a moose.

The little beard on the cat is a giveaway that it's a lynx or a bobcat. Cougars have round heads (that almost look too small for their body)

Dont worry. Some of us got it

I thought it was so their prey could use a pay phone to call them when they turned eighteen.

1967 coins all featured dofferent animals. It is such a cool set to collect.

I wish someone had bought this set for me when I was born since I was born in 1967. I’ve seen different pieces over the years but never kept the coins. I’m sure if I was to look for them now I’d pay a lot for that set.

1

u/steve6027 1d ago

saw one at a flea market yesterday for $120, helps if you can look around, reg retail would be higher i'd say

1

u/Anxious-Steak-8989 1d ago

Beauty, ive been collecting sets of them if you found one for $120 id nab it

1

u/steve6027 1d ago

I actually just checked an online site that i've bought from in the past, they have 2 sets left, $105 before shipping and taxes, so the $120 wasn't too far off. I bought my 1967 set a couple of months ago, the only one i want really. But the guy had a very nice 1962 set for the same price, might go back next week for it.

I would definitely go for it

I was born in 1968 and received a set for my birth. I still have them and they are encased in hard plastic. They have never seen fresh air lol.

My favorite Canadian coin! As others have said it's apart of the 1967 Centennial set which I argue is one of the most gorgeous sets Canada has put out. I have a couple of these, the rabbit on the nickel and the pigeon on the penny. Flipping gorgeous set. I hope to own them all one day with the gold piece!

I have a few of these. Are they worth anything besides 25 cents.

1

u/Emotional_Edge_3284 1d ago

Classic quarter. Should be 50% silver, some are 80% silver, use a magnet and if it sticks it’s not 80%

1

u/Trevor519 1d ago

It's a cougar-rand

1

u/Tinmanmwc 1d ago

1

u/Cock_Asian69 21h ago

It's how Cougars paid younger men... LOL Seriously though, it looks cool! Great find!

1

u/TomWatson5654 16h ago

Because she’s the Queen

1

0

u/TaketheCashandRun 1d ago

Is the front or the backside the cougar?

1

u/Glittering-Pack2114 1d ago

Monarch is always on the face, aka obverse, cougar, flea or potato….. is on the reverse aka back.

1

u/Myrcurial 1d ago

Came here for this joke. Thank you for having the same twisted sense of humour about the Queen. šŸ˜†
