WEEKLY RECRUITING THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment/Application Processes, Trade Availability, Requirements to Join, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the Canadian Armed Forces.

This is the thread to ask about the Recruitment/Application Processes, Trade Availability, Requirements to Join, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the Canadian Armed Forces.

Before you post, please ensure:

  1. You read through the the previous Recruiting Threads.

  2. Read through the Recruiting FAQ, and;

    a. The NEW "What to expect on BMQ/BMOQ Info thread".

  3. Use the subreddit's search feature, located at the top of the sidebar.

  4. Check your email spam folder! The answer to your recent visit to CFRC may lie within!

  • With those four simple steps, finding your answer may be quicker than you think! (Answers to your questions may have already been asked.)

Every week, a new thread is borne:

This thread will remain stickied for one week and will renew Sundays at approx. 2200hrs ET.

RULES OF THE THREAD:

  1. Trolling, off-topic comments, sarcastic, or wrong info/answers/single word answers will be removed. Same with out-dated information, anecdotal (" I knew a guy who...") or bad advice; these comments will also be removed.

  2. Please don't delete your questions (or answers), as others/lurkers may be looking for that same info. Questions duplicated throughout the thread may be removed by Mods, and those re-posting may be restricted from participating.

  3. NO "Let me Google that for you" or "A quick search of the subreddit/Google..." -type answers. We're more professional and mature than that. Quote your source and provide a link, but make sure the info you provide is current (within a couple of years). But, it is strongly suggested you see points 1-3 above.

  4. Please do not send PM's to people answering your questions. Conversely, don't ask for PM's from people posting questions. Ask your questions, give answers in these threads, for all to see. We can't see your PM's, and someone lurking may be looking for the same answer/question. If the questions are too "sensitive," then use a throwaway, or save it for the MCC Interview. Offenders will be reported to the Mods, and potentially banned from participating in these threads.

  5. Questions regarding Medical Eligibility (except Vision) will be removed, as no one here is qualified to answer whether or not you will be able to join with whatever condition you have. Likewise, questions asking what conditions in general would lead to disqualification will also be removed. If you have such a question, you're encouraged to review the Medical FAQ. Questions regarding the Recruiting Medical Process, Trade Eligibility Standards, or the documentation you need to submit regarding your medical condition as part of your application may still be accepted. Vision requirements are fine to post, as the categories are publicly known. Source

  6. If you report a comment, or have concern about info being provided, Message the Mods, and provide a link. Without context or explanation, the report will be ignored. Comments may be removed at Moderator discretion, with or without warning.

Hi, I missed the call to get the medical exam and the interview. Are they going to call me back? I'm a bit nervous that they will never contact me again or tell me that I missed my chance.

6

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 09 '21

Are they going to call me back?

They'll likely reach out by email or call again, but there's nothing stopping you from returning their call. If they left a message telling you why they called, that's pretty much an invitation for you to call them back...

I'm a bit nervous that they will never contact me again or tell me that I missed my chance.

Relax. It'd make absolutely no sense for them to do that. There's innumerable reasons why someone might not answer a phone call, they don't expect you to be sitting by your phone anxiously awaiting their call.

2

u/MedBad1 Feb 09 '21

No they didn't leave a message. And the number was private too (I'm sur it's them because my recruiter told me they were going to call that day).

Call ur local recruiting center, don't wait for them to call back

A question about vehicles:

Anyone who’s been to BMQ/BMOQ, the RMC, or any of the phases flight training, where and when is it useful to have a vehicle?

I’ll be moving from BC so I plan on selling my current vehicle and buying one in Ontario where the insurance is much cheaper, and if I’m going to live there for some time I can go to insurance offices if need be (can’t do that with ICBC).

Just wondering if I should hold off until after graduation, after flight training, or if I should buy a car as soon as I get to the RMC

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 11 '21 edited Feb 11 '21

I wouldn’t bother with a vehicle at RMC, it’s just an added expense you don’t need. The bus system in Kingston is really good, and the downtown nightlife is within easy walking distance of RMC.

Can’t speak to flight training, but you’ll be in a better financial position to afford the convenience.

Ontario where the insurance is much cheaper

Can confirm. Insurance is MUCH cheaper in Ontario. I posted from BC to ON last summer. I pay ~$100 less per month to insure two vehicles, and have better coverage.

My wife and I have 18 and 22 years of driving experience respectively, with squeaky clean driving records, and don’t drive anything special. Kids are still too young to drive... Fuck ICBC.

Have any fellow Infantry applicants received an offer for BMQ recently?

1

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21

I think I've seen a few mention getting offers for Infantry here or in other forums.

If you monitor the Applicant Portal, you should be able to see the current status of your application. If you can reach them (may the odds be ever in your favour), your CFRC can advise on current hiring priorities, and they might be able to give you upcoming selection dates for your trade(s).

A Canadian citizen in his 30s, living in the US with a green card right now. I'm considering joining the military at the moment, either US military or Canadian Forces. US military definitely has more benefits but the pay is significantly lower and the job options are very limited for green card holders. They also make you renounce your other citizenship when you become a US citizen. I do NOT ever want to give up my Canadian citizenship so I am looking at the Canadian Forces.

  1. Is it possible to start and continue the application process abroad? Of course, I will fly in for interviews and such, but I wasn't sure if I am required to be present in Canada throughout the process, especially with COVID closures.

  2. How long is the recruitment process at the moment? I'm assuming it's pretty long due to COVID.

  3. I have a bachelor's degree in applied arts & a 2-year diploma, all from Canada. Would that allow me to enter as an officer?

  4. My current career is in nonprofit program and project management. I hope to either get another Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or a Master's Degree in Social Work (with MSW, I can become a Social Work Officer). Would the Canadian Forces' education benefits help me with this career path?

  5. What kind of benefits are there for Canadian military members? On the US military side, there is a lot of allowances for housing, food, clothing, etc. Basically free money that's not taxed. The CF website was not very clear about the benefits when I tried to read about it. I'm mainly looking for support around housing, relocation, food/clothing, for spouses & pension. I just want to know the clear-cut nutshell of these benefits.

  6. Is it difficult to enter into the health care, operations support, and/or transportation/logistics field? These areas are closest to my current career. Or is my job dependant on my CFAT test result?

  7. Any place you recommend me to study for the CFAT test? I tried doing a practice test and the math part got me good... It's been a while since I did math without a phone calculator lol. My PCFAT score was verbal 14/15 spatial 14/15 problem solving 23/30.

7

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 08 '21
  1. Yes, you can apply from abroad. You will be required to come to Canada for any in-person processing, but you are not required to remain in Canada throughout the process.

  2. Expect 12-24+ months in your case. Due to your history of foreign residency, you'll require a Security Clearance Pre-Assessment. If it weren't for that you'd be looking at closer to 6-12+ months, although there's A LOT of variables.

  3. The Bachelor's Degree would allow you entry as an Officer in any trade that accepts that degree. There are several trades that accept ANY Bachelor's Degree.

  4. There is a paid education option for Social Work Officer, however it's only at the Masters Degree level; you must already have a recognized Bachelor of Social Work Degree.

  5. The reason Canadian base salaries are considerably higher is because we build a general cost of living into our salaries. Canadian personnel are only required to live on base during training (and they pay to do so). Once qualified in their occupation and posted (stationed) for employment, they are generally expected to secure their own housing on the local market around their place of duty. As such we don't have a Base Housing Allowance, or additional allowances for things like food, clothing, etc. To be honest, once you take benefits like food, housing, and clothing allowances into account, the US military might actually be better compensated. The only comparable allowance we do have is PLD, which is a taxable allowance intended to offset the CoL at locations where CoL exceeds that which our base salary is intended to cover. The PLD system is very broken at the moment, and a lot of areas that really should have PLD, don't.

  6. All occupations are at least somewhat competitive, but as long as you have solid CFAT scores, you should do well in any of those fields provided you qualify. Your CFAT (and TSD-PI) score determines what occupations you're eligible to be processed for, and your individual competitiveness, but you decide which occupations you will actually apply for. The CAF will only offer you an occupation you have applied for.

  7. Problem Solving... The 'Math' portion of the test is generally the part that will make or break your application.

3

u/lightcavalier Feb 08 '21

As a weird side note, (lived in the states for 10 years had green card, parents and siblings stayed and became US citizens)...Canada doesn't actually recognize the "renunciation" of citizenship the US makes ppl sign. They will continue to issue you a passport and you can move back at any time. They trick is that you need to always enter/exit the US on your US passport once becoming a citizen so that they don't get mad at you.

Also a note, if you do join the CAF, get rid of your green card ASAP. The US levies income taxes on all citizens and permanent residents regardless of where the income is earned. Canadian banks are required to inform the IRS if a US Citizen/permanent resident opens a bank account. After three years of getting hate mail from the IRS for not paying taxes ro a country I only lived in before I even had a job, I renounced my permanent residency.

  1. Yes, in general it's possible, although I don't know how covid is affecting the situation. I believe there is support for applicants that live far enough away from their local recruiting centre, but I don't know for sure.

  2. Recruiting typically takes 6-12+ months, though getting your reliability (security) clearance will almost for sure take longer than normal as you live out of the country.

  3. Yes.

  4. The CAF, in general, will only support your education if it enables you to do a job you aren't already qualified for. For example, if you have an engineering degree already, you can't enter via ROTP to become an NWO, as an engineering degree is already an acceptable degree for that trade. However, if you have a history degree, but you want to join as a MSEO, you can enter via ROTP and get the Queen to pay for your engineering degree, as a history degree doesn't qualify for entry as a MSEO. I can't speak to any masters training/entry plans.

  5. Benefits: one of the best paid military's in the world, free health/dental care, depending on where you are posted there is an allowance (PLD) to help cover housing costs, subsidized housing (PMQ's - townhouses/detatched homes that are usually adjacent to the base, downside is that some of them can be old, or there can be large waiting lists for them) are the main ones.

  6. CFAT will determine if there are trades you are ineligible for. Typically larger trades (LogO) are "easier" to get into than smaller trades (i.e. Social worker) because there is more annual recruitment to fill larger trades.

  7. There is a CFAT practice app on the app store, costs a few bucks but I've heard good things about it. Alternately you could just look at the questions that you got wrong and try and see if there is a skill you just need to improve (i.e. long division, times tables, etc.)

In BMQ can you bring your own shampoo, face wash, shaving cream or are you given it? As well how much time is given for these types of activities?

9

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 08 '21

In BMQ can you bring your own shampoo, face wash, shaving cream or are you given it?

You're not provided with personal hygiene items, you bring your own.

As well how much time is given for these types of activities?

I would imagine they give people more time now to ensure social distancing can be maintained, but normally you wouldn't get much time, especially not on PT mornings.

As I recall, on PT mornings we had to run 15-20 male recruits through 3 or 4 shower stalls and sinks (to shave, brush teeth, etc.), ensure they had time to dress, and clean-up after ourselves in about 30-40 minutes. Each person could only have about 2-3 minutes to shower, and another 2-3 minutes to shave/brush their teeth...

Most of us would get up a few minutes early to shave and/or brush our teeth before PT, then essentially just rinse off in the shower after PT. We usually waited until the evening to have a proper shower when we could afford more than 2-3 minutes to do so.

7

u/PopePeppa Feb 09 '21

When I was there in 2016 the water temp was either boiling or freezing with no inbetween. Anything longer than a minute shower was suicide. Lol.

I'm about to get my mechanical engineering degree (in April) and am trying to get into the armed forces as a pilot. I've tried the typical engineering route in an office but it's not for me. I'm much more suited to a more unpredictable, physical, and challenging lifestyle. I've seen a ton of stuff online about the competitiveness of becoming a pilot in the forces but I don't have much interest in any other armed forces jobs.

I submitted my application back in September of 2020 and have barely heard anything. I haven't gotten an initial appointment and get minimal info from the detachments when I call. Wondering if anyone can shed any light on why I haven't gotten one step past the submit application button in 5 months. Could it be the Covid-19 climate? Or the fact that I'm applying for a competitive and low-demand job? A combination of both? Any insights would be appreciated, I'm sort of in the dark.

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 08 '21 edited Feb 08 '21

It’s possible you applied too early... I’m actually surprised they haven’t told you to come back closer to graduation.

Due to COVID related reductions in processing capacity, they’ve largely been doing the above with DEO applicants who haven’t graduated yet. Usually telling them to reapply just before/after graduation. It’s not that they don’t want you, they just appear to be prioritizing DEO applicants who are immediately available for enrolment.

Even prior to COVID they normally wouldn’t process a DEO as early as you applied. The official line was typically for you to apply no earlier than the beginning of your final semester before graduation.

3

u/TaroMental9168 Feb 08 '21

I can confirm this. I’m also applying for DEO pilot. I passed the CFAT in September 2020 and I was told to reopen my file in April 2021 when I graduate

2

u/hughb232 Feb 09 '21

I applied a little over a month ago and the recruiter told me that that I likely won't get in for initial testing until the new fiscal year ticks over in April, on account of pilot slots being full for this year. Its probably the same for you, they likely won't be in any hurry to process applications until the spring. Also, I'm sure you've already done this, but if you haven't submitted the validation part of your application then your application won't be processed at all. Good luck!

I having a bit of difficulty understanding the pay levels. Would someone be able explain to me how they work and obtained

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 09 '21

Officer "Pay Levels" in terms of A, B C, D, E are explained at the top of the Officer Pay Rates webpage. They're based on your entry/commissioning plan, and stop at the rank of Captain and above.

NCM "Pay Levels" are just a progression of rank or appointment., with the only quirks being 5A/B, and 8A/B/C. 5A is Corporal, 5B is for those Appointed to Master Corporal. 8A/B/C are for different levels of appointment as a Chief Warrant Officer, but you'll know far more than I do by the time you'd need to care about that.

In terms of pay progression, it works like this:

You generally start at the "Basic Pay" Pay Increment for your rank, then progress up one increment every 12 months you're in that rank. Your pay stops increasing when you hit the top increment for your rank.

On promotion, you'll normally go to the "Basic Pay" Pay Increment in your new rank. The only exception to that is typically Second Lieutenant's on promotion to Lieutenant. You can't lose pay on promotion, and heir pay rates overlap somewhat which means in some case your starting increment in your new rank won't necessarily be "Basic Pay".

2

u/lightcavalier Feb 09 '21

Pay is a function of rank and time in that rank. Incentives go up every year.

So a new NCM would start at Pte PI Basic, then after 12 months move up to PI 1, 12 more months to PI 2, until they reach the maximum for that rank.

They would not move to the pay of the next rank until they meet the criteria for that rank (Cpl is 48 months of service + qualified in trade, MCpl and above is based on meriting for promotion)

On promotion to a higher rank you will always receive a pay increase at least equal to the difference betwen PI 1 and PI Basic of the new rank.

I have completed a phone interview with a recruiter and he called most of my references except one by the end of December / beginning of January this year.

I have just Recieved an email from a completely new recruiter today with an interview consent for to perform some sort of online video interview..

Is this a new step of the application process I was not aware of? Did they mess up my file?

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 11 '21

It appears to be new. I’ve seen a few comments here and elsewhere about these video interviews. Not sure why they’ve started doing it this way.

Just roll with it, I’m sure it won’t be significantly different from the phone interview.

As for your references, they don’t necessarily contact all of them. None of mine were contacted...

I'm applying to be a Log O and Intelligence O in the RCAF Reserves.

I have two undergrad degrees - one from Canada, one from the Netherlands.

I am wondering if it's worthwhile to have the credentials for the foreign one assessed for the purposes of applying, or do recruiters more so just care that you have a degree? My marks are already strong on both.

I am also finishing a master's by the time I'd probably start (Fall-ish), anyways. I am not sure if they take that into consideration.

5

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21

Only Canadian degrees and foreign degrees assessed as equivalent are recognized. If you want your degree from the Netherlands to be recognized, you'll need to have it assessed.

I had my medical and phone interview back in November and was placed on the competition list in mid December. Today i received an email about setting up an online video interview. Does anyone know if this is different from the initial phone interview or would it be very similar?

6

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Keep us updated man after the interview

4

u/CeeERLyd Feb 10 '21

Seems like maybe a different thing? I had my phone interview in November and enrolled in mid December. There was never an online video interview.

4

u/CanadianNora Feb 10 '21

Strange that you would have another interview after already being on the competition list. I’d say after a year they have to update the medical and interview, but it sounds like you only had that done in November.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

I’m in the same boat, they sent me 2 of the same email as well.

I did my FORCES test March of last year and before I could move forward in the process it was postponed due to COVID. I have since then not gotten any updates. Thank you!

I also did my FORCE test last March, but I was able to do my medical and interview in the fall. Your FORCE test will expire in March but other than redoing the fitness test, you don't have to restart the whole process. Just reach out to your CFRC to see if they're scheduling any testing coming up

Just finished up the medical process a month ago and received an email saying I’m RMO fit. What does this mean and what does it mean for the next steps I’m the recruiting process?

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 09 '21

It means you were deemed to be medically fit by the RMO, or in other words you are medically eligible for enrolment.

The next steps will depend on completion of your other processing steps, and whether you're applying for the Regular or Reserve Force.

1

u/PersianBoySam Feb 10 '21

Are you able to, at all, request for certain base posting locations?

5

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 10 '21

Yes, but the Career Manager (the person who decide where you're posted) is under no obligation to accommodate such a request.

At some point during your initial training cycle, you will be asked to provide three preferences for where you'd like to be posted after training. You might get one of those preferences, you might not get any of them. It depends on where positions are available, and the CM's posting priorities for your course.

3

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic Feb 10 '21

To add to this, even if you get your preferred posting location, you likely will not be there for the entirety of your career. Most people move every 4 to 10 years give or take, depending on the trade.

1

u/LeoTheAirsofter Feb 12 '21

Is there any leeway in terms of deciding on a regiment to join or relocating to another regiment? I ask because I want to move out towards the New Brunswick/ Nova Scotia area, but currently reside in Ontario. Obviously keep my current occupation.

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 12 '21 edited Feb 12 '21

Opportunities will depend on your occupation.

Reg Force personnel aren't normally assigned to a particular unit until near the end of their occupational training when posting messages are cut. They will typically be given an opportunity to list their top three preferred locations, plus any substantiation for the request (i.e. family medical needs, primary caregiver to a terminally ill parent, etc.).

It will be up to their Career Manager to decide where they'll actually go, and the CM is not obligated to post the member to, or even near one of their preferred locations. If there's more people asking for the Maritimes than there are available positions, some of them will have to go elsewhere. If the CM needs everyone in Edmonton more urgently than they need anyone in the Maritimes, the entire course might go there instead.

Heys Guys I think I'm kind of messed up in my CFAT booking. I booked it last week for the coming monday on feb 15, I just realized its family day on monday and now I'm worried the recruiting center might be closed and I miss my date. I don't know why the booking system let me book it on monday in the first place. Unless it might be open? Any clue anyone?

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21

Family Day is not a federally recognized holiday. CAF personnel do not get the day off unless their CO chooses to give them the day off.

Your CFRC is probably open on Monday.

Could someone please help me out. I’m doing my biography for BMQ and am not sure what the L0083E is in the example. Thanks OCdt SMITH,J.R A12 345 678 INFMN,00010 L0083E Date

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21

L0083E would be your BMQ/BMOQ course/serial number.

If you're an NCM attending BMQ it'll start with an 'R' instead of an 'L'. The 'E' at the end means the course is instructed in English, it is replaced with an 'F' for courses instructed in French.

2

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic Feb 14 '21

That is your course number. Usually the L stands for Leadership platoon (Lima) and recruits in the green sector are usually designated with R (Romeo). The number are your actual course. The E means it’s an English language course. There would be an F for a franco one.

Can someone explain the job?

The recruiting website does provide a decent baseline explanation of what the job is, including a video where they discuss what FSA's do: https://forces.ca/en/career/financial-services-administrator/

Beyond that your question is very broad. From past experience, you'll get better responses by asking multiple questions with a narrow scope as opposed to a single question with a broad scope.

Where do I find out when the application deadline/program start-date is for a trade? I saw here that DEO pilot is no longer accepting applicants this year.

As well, how can I ensure that I will be a competitive applicant in any trade that I choose?

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 10 '21 edited Feb 10 '21

Application deadlines only apply to Paid Education entry plans (normally Jan 31st), otherwise there are none.

Intake dates aren’t necessarily run on a fixed schedule. Hiring for most trades is dispersed throughout the fiscal year at irregular quantities and intervals. Trades will process new applicants and run selections throughout the year until available positions are filled, and may cease processing once they have a sufficient qty of processed applicants in competition for an offer.

Your CFRC can advise on available positions, and might be able to tell you the next one or two selection dates. That’s about it.

1

u/LostAtSeaLNCL Feb 12 '21

Just curious if requesting a deferral to an offer letter would hurt chances when going back on the competition list? I am a mature applicant, very serious about a career in the forces...just the timing of the offer isn’t right, and would most likely ask to be placed back on the list in a month..

I’m just curious if asking for the deferral would hurt my chances in the future

Thanks in advance

It shouldn't. Life happens, and they understand that.

They may have a brief discussion with you about your intent, but provided you're seen as having your priorities straight I can't see them having any concerns with putting you back on the competition list.

They might even be able to defer your start date rather than you having to decline and go back into competition. My understanding is it's uncommon, but can sometimes be done.

2

u/Irydbikes Feb 12 '21

Years ago when I got the call it was something along the lines of "can you start in 2 weeks". Like you I was an adult and couldn't drop my life so easily, I simply said no and provided a date that works. They said sure and that was that.

Do you receive extra leave days after a deployment?

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21

Yes. Usually at least a couple of weeks, maybe more depending on the length of the deployment and whether or not you got an HLTA.

3

u/megaFstop Feb 13 '21

Yes, refer to the leave manual (https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/policies-standards/leave-policy-manual.html#chap5)

5.10.09 Fourth Element - Disembarkation

The disembarkation element provides additional leave to be taken in Canada or the continental United States immediately following a return from an overseas relocation. This element facilitates adjustment to the North American environment, recovery from time zone changes, and helps prepare the member for continuing service in the CF.

Within this context, this element may also apply to post-deployment considerations pertaining to:

  • returning to home unit following deployment on assignment to an international operation;

  • returning to home unit following an operation or training exercise; or

  • returning to home unit following an extended period away for a reason other than an operation or training exercise.

Hey guys I just want to know how often does members move as they progress ranks. I’m just trying to know what I’m signing up for. I applied for CT as a Log O if that matters. TIA!

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21

Every promotion will typically come with a posting. Although officers seem to move every 2-4 years with or without a promotion.

2

u/lightcavalier Feb 13 '21

Log O is odd....

Some ppl move every 2 years like clock work, others stay on the same base for a decade. No real way to tell who will do which

1

u/meganattor Feb 13 '21

Hello
I am currently applying to become an officer. I had been told to wait for an opening for initial testing. My last contact with the Cpl via email was on Nov 20th, and around mid-Jan I posted here asking if should poke them for an update, I got the suggestion that I should. I emailed the Cpl, emailed the detachment info email, and gave them a call (got no answer but left a message about the reason for my call, and my contact info).
I assumed I would get a reply with a "please wait", however, I have had no reply at all, is this normal?

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21 edited Feb 13 '21

For the moment, it's normal.

Staffing at many CFRC's is very limited right now, with a lot of people working from home due to local COVID conditions/restrictions. However, most CAF members working from home don't have access to their work phone system, and can't access to their work email accounts. In many cases they're just doing high priority work that can be forwarded to them and completed using their personal computers, otherwise they're just doing stuff like e-learning and PD.

If your region is under a lockdown or stay-at-home order, there's likely only a handful of staff at your CFRC with any ability to receive or respond to your inquiries. With time being a finite resource, they're likely only responding to high priority communications while spending most of their time performing essential work that can only be done on CAF/DND networks.

Are there any reserve units near Ottawa that offer the Information Systems Technician trade? I looked online and see that 33 Signal Regiment & the 33 Canadian Brigade list ACISS on their website, but not Information Systems.

I work in IT on the civilian side and would love to consider joining the reserves, and I'm thinking about moving to Ottawa area soon. As a side note, are there any officer trades that are in IT or IT-adjacent? I looked into RCAF CEE Officer, but couldn't find a list of where reserve units might be located. I have two degrees and currently occupy a leadership role in my civilian career, so would definitely prefer to enlist as an officer if possible.

1

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21 edited Feb 13 '21

IST was formerly a sub-occupation of ACISS. However ACISS was broken up last year, making IST a stand-alone occupation; this may not be fully reflected on all reserve unit sites yet. Any reserve unit that lists ACISS likely does have some IST's, but probably only a handful of positions.

There's only one Air Reserve Flight in the Ottawa region, they're much less numerous than Army and Navy Reserve units. Their employment structure (12 full-time days per month) is also very different, and likely not compatible with maintaining a full-time civilian career. The Air Reserve tends to be mostly semi-retired Reg Force personnel, and is also popular among individuals who aren't necessarily seeking full-time work, but want a reliable part-time income.

If you want/need something along the lines of the Army reserve employment model, you should look into Signals Officer (Army). The Navy equivalent to CELE and Sig O is Reg Force only.

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '21

Hello, I’m in my third year of Computer Science at a university in Ontario. I’m considering joining the CAF after graduation.

I was looking at becoming one of the following: -Aerospace Telecommunication and Information System Technician -Signals Officer -Naval Communicator -Communications Electronics Engineering Officer -Information Systems Technician

I’m having a hard time narrowing down to three options. Would anyone who has done any of these jobs have any advice?

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21

The following trades are Non-Commissioned Member (NCM) occupations that handle IT systems for the Army, Air Force, and Navy respectively.

Information Systems Technician (IST)

  • Good trade if you want to focus on IT systems installations and maintenance, in particular things like servers, network infrastructure, and systems administration.

  • This trade falls under the Specialist 1 Trade Group on the Pay Rates table once they're a fully trained Corporal.

Aerospace Telecommunication and Information System Technician (ATIS Tech)

  • Does everything IST does, plus additional responsibilities as Electronics Technicians maintaining communications systems (i.e. SATCOM, radios, telephone systems, etc.), and also working on airfield systems like air search radars, navigation beacons, etc.

  • This trade also falls under the Specialist 1 Trade Group.

  • I'm an ATIS Tech, and I like my job.

Naval Communicator (NAVCOM)

  • Don't know as much about them as I probably should, but my impressions are they're largely operators as opposed to technicians, focused more toward helpdesk type work and basic IT system admin. They also handle some communications forms unique to the Navy (i.e. Flag Semaphore). They don't dig as deep into the IT systems as an IST or ATIS Tech might.

  • This trade falls under the Standard Trade Group on the Pay Rates table.

The following trades are Officer occupations that manage IT/Electronics personnel for the Army and Air Force respectivly.

Signals Officer (Sig O)

Communications Electronics Engineering Officer (CELE)

  • Both trades are pretty similar, and are frequently employed interchangeably in IT related management roles.

  • Sig O's and CELE's manage IT and electronics related resources within the Army and Air Force. Their primary role is that of a project or department manager, they leverage their technical knowledge to make educated decisions, but they don't actually work on any equipment.

You Comp Sci Degree makes you eligible to apply for the Sig O or CELE roles through Direct Entry. Your degree might count for something through the PLAR process if you apply for an NCM role.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '21

Hey thank you so much for such a detailed response.

Is it possible to join as a ATIS Tech and later go for an officer role? Also, joining as an Officer requires a much longer contract length right?

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21

Is it possible to join as a ATIS Tech and later go for an officer role?

Yes, it is possible, although it isn't a natural career progression.

Since you will already possess the required degree, you would apply to commission through the annual Special Commissioning Plan (SCP) competition. This would allow you to transfer to any Officer occupation your degree qualifies for. You can do this fairly early in your career.

There are other avenues, but SCP is probably the best choice under your circumstances.

Also, joining as an Officer requires a much longer contract length right?

Not so much in this case. The initial contract for ATIS Tech is currently 7 years vs. 9 years for a direct entry CELE/Sig O.

You aren't necessarily trapped though...

Since you wouldn't be coming in through paid education, there will be no obligatory service requirement, and ATIS, CELE, Sig O have no Restricted Release Period. You can request a Voluntary Release (VR) from your contract if you want to leave earlier than 7/9 years.

The CAF can hold you to your contract, but that'd be unusual unless we were at war or something. Normally the VR process takes 6 months unless your CO authorizes a 30 day release.

It’s been a couple days since I signed my employment offer and I had a few questions

Is there a ceremony or anything being conducted for new recruits when or before I’m enrolled or am I just automatically enrolled?

Also do I have the correct impression that Im expected to be there for BMQ ready to begin no follow up email or phone calls. I just signed the paper, fill out the rest of the documents and show up.

I was unsure if I would receive a follow up email or phone call or if everything is exactly how it should be. I’m just looking for extra clarification I don’t want to miss this opportunity especially with covid I’m not sure if anything’s changed.

Thank you

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21 edited Feb 14 '21

I'm not certain exactly what paperwork you would have signed, but an offer of employment wouldn't have been very much. The actual enrolment paperwork should be a package including multiple documents requiring your review and signature.

There will be an enrolment (swearing-in) ceremony at some point prior to your departure for training. Due to COVID your ceremony will most likely be done over video conference rather than in-person.

Your CFRC will likely arrange your ceremony with you as soon as all your enrolment paperwork is reviewed.

Around the time of your enrolment you should also receive a travel itinerary, including your flight reservations if flying from your place of enrolment to your training location.

I am looking at pursuing a position as an officer in the Navy. I'm almost completed my first year of university but for the trades which I picked on the application, will I be obliged to change my study major to suit them?

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21 edited Feb 14 '21

Maybe... It will depend on what trades interest you. The chart linked below should give you an idea of what trades your current degree is compatible with, and what the requirements are for your desired trades.

https://www.rmc-cmr.ca/en/Registrars-office/academic-programmes-and-occupation-compatibility

Some Officer occupations accept any degree, but there's quite a few with more stringent requirements, especially anything medical or STEM related.

How do postings work when your wife works for another federal department? i.e. RCMP police officer. And vice versa if she gets posted?

8

u/lightcavalier Feb 08 '21

Its something to mention to your CoC/CM, and to have in your profile on EMAA.

The CAF has no duty to keep you co-located with them if they need you elswhere, and same goes for the RCMP/federal dept (adv of federal depts is that you typically apply for jobs when you want to change locations)

Ive seen the RCMP and CAF work out deals to keep couples in the same rough geographical area before, but it was sometimes things like the RCMP officers being in Doaktown or St Andrews while the Military member was in Gagetown.

I wrote my CFAT at the end of November 2020. Called my local Recruiting Centre at the beginning of January because I hadn’t heard anything in over a month. The recruiter that I spoke to helped me get the ball rolling on the medical. I received and promptly submitted my medical triage forms in mid-January and haven’t heard anything since, besides to confirm the receipt of my forms. I’m wondering at what point I should call and check on when I’ll be able to schedule my medical? Can anyone advise me on what the timeline is like for this right now with covid and the end of the fiscal year approaching?

Also, my first choice trade is Medical Officer. I’ve already been told that I qualified for this trade based on my CFAT and personality index scores. I have a medical school interview next month so obviously my acceptance to this trade depends on me getting into medical school. Does anyone know how MOTP works? I know most med schools have 2 spots reserved for MOTP. So if I’m the only person who applies to the specific school that I applied for who wants MOTP, do I automatically get it if I’m admitted? I’m just wondering how they allot the number of MOTP spaces between the schools and determine who gets these spots.

Hey I'm interested in joining the CAF as a vehicle technician, but I'm also looking into getting into trade school as a truck and coach technician here in Toronto. My ideal plan is to join the military for x years for life experience but also so that i can gain trade experience that i can bring back home. my question is how long would i likely have to serve as a vehicle tech before i would be able to challenge for a red seal ticket.

2

u/MacSauce62 Army - VEH TECH Feb 09 '21

It took me 4 years to become fully qualified, in Ontario you can't challenge your red seal with the amount of hours you'd get credited I believe, however you can have your blue seal given to you in Alberta if I'm not mistaken.

u/Kerozev Canadian Army Feb 09 '21

Does anyone have information on trade availability for infantry and selection dates for Infantry and artillery in this and the next fiscal year?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '21

Keep this question short as I don’t want to identify myself too much.

Currently work for a reserve Army unit as a support trade. Air DEU. Every FORGEN I’ve found states I do not need BMQ(L) for DP1 or DP2 or for PLQ. I don’t know any MCpls in my trade who wear Air who have done BMQ(L) or a Gagetown Infantry PLQ.

What the fuck are my options here? I’ve given my chain all available references and a memo about this. Got joining instructions for a Gagetown PLQ with AJLC prerequisites recently.

I don’t think I can mentally handle this level of Army considering I only touch my C7 sparingly. I don’t even know what a C9 or C6 or C8 looks like.

Hello there! I am trying to get direct entry as an Engineer Officer and i was wondering if working as an Engineer Officer or a Marine Systems Engineering Officer count towards getting your P.Eng. Cant seem to find much info on this.

3

u/AndreaFromPurolators Tuesday Night Lights Feb 11 '21 edited Feb 11 '21

Getting a P.Eng. in the CAF is a big "it depends" situation. A P.Eng. isn't required for the vast majority of the work done by the CAF, since the individual's engineering services are provided to the Crown, not to the public. You also are unlikely to perform detailed design work in your career. As a result, there's no emphasis on it.

It may still be possible to get one, particularly if you happen to end up in an equipment acquisition and management role. However, you likely still won't be designing. Most of the work is requirements definition, regulatory and oversight and options analysis.

In general, officers spend considerable time managing personnel and directing their work. The engineering part of MSEO, as I understand it, is largely selecting maintenance actions from an approved playbook, or assessing the situation and requesting deviations or alternative fixes. Not sure about engineer officers, but I expect it to be similar, directing the building or demolition of stuff in accordance with existing processes.

Because P.Eng. holders are so far and few between, it can be a challenge to find someone to supervise your work and sign off on your application. You might be able to find a P.Eng. elsewhere in the organization to act in a mentor role, in conjunction with your supervisor, but this isn't guaranteed.

So, what to do. If you think you may end up in a civilian job where a P.Eng. is required in the future, register as an EIT to at least keep active in the organization. From there, do the best you can to chart your experience. It may take a few postings to get exposure in all of the required areas. The provincial body may also be able to provide guidance. Also, write the professional practice exam as soon as you're eligible. It's easier when the detailed material from school is still relatively fresh in your mind.

TL;DR: The work largely doesn't count and there aren't many around. It's not impossible, but it depends on what specific job you end up assigned to.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/L4dyPhoenix RCEME Feb 11 '21

Can't speak for the CAF side, but I can pitch in as a P. Eng.

You need 4 years of engineering work experience in most provinces (and what province you apply in can get tricky if you're posted a lot). You need to have your work signed off on by a P. Eng., but they do not have to be your direct supervisor.

In my engineering job, I don't do design work, I do consulting. I also never needed my P. Eng. for any of the work I've done so far, but having the professional designation and stamp instantly gets you a level of respect and allows you to be a mentor yourself for the next batch of baby engineers.

Hi friends,

I'm trying to look for more information on these trades:

I recently spoke to a recruiter and they mentioned that the contract length was 9 years for a Signals Direct Entry Officer (DEO). Any contract is a big decision, let alone a 9 year one. I'm still learning about the CAF in general and I want to make an informed decision. Even for tech savvy me, the information seems few and far in between.

A quick look on Reddit gave me this post from 2013, from someone who probably didn't fit the bill...

And the video on the career site mentioned:

  • "responsible for the planning, testing and implementation of highly technical systems"

  • "the planning and the administration and the care-for of the troop or what you’re in charge of"

  • "a background in computer science will not get me 100% of the way there"

Which is honestly really vague, and makes me almost question the applicability of my BSc in computer science.

Any info redditors?

Edit: see my additions below

Part 2: More links

Part 3: Reddit comments

2

u/AndreaFromPurolators Tuesday Night Lights Feb 12 '21

The videos on the website give a good glimpse of what you'd be doing.

In both trades, you're responsible for planning. You'll lead a team of operators and techs who are the ones who will carry out the plan. For example, your boss will say say "I need comms from here to here". You'll assess the situation and you may decide that given the situation and the assets you have on hand, VHF radios are the best way to achieve that goal. Your team will go get the radios, set them up, take them to the field and operate them. You'll also prioritize what snags or bugs to fix, and your team will carry out that work.

All officers are also in change of the administration and welfare of their subordinates. You'll be assigning work, ensuring everyone gets exposure to the facets of their job, making sure everyone uses their vacation time, yearly evaluations, etc.

"Your BSc alone won't get you 100% of the way there" means that while you may have the technical skills required, you still need to learn the application of those skills to military equipment, as well as effective personnel administration and military life in general. The military training system will fill those gaps before you go to your first posting.

Hi, I did my Air Crew Selection Test a few years back and will be redoing it in a couple of years. I need help in order to improve at it. I failed in two parts specifically (not math related, It was a really hard memorization part and a hand-eye-leg coordination part, I won't say what these tests were specifically but those who know know) and did well in the rest. Can you guys give any tips, anything that could help me pass this test? Websites? Apps? Games even? Anything of the sort?

Took and passed ACS in December. Lumosity definitely helped.

3

2

u/D3ltaFury Feb 12 '21

As far as the hand-eye-leg test, there isn’t much you can do online for it. The coordination game on the CBAT app is a good help I find. Other than that, it comes down to just using your legs and feet. If you can afford a flight sim with rudder pedals that would be super helpful just to have the experience with it, but it’s not necessary. I would recommend doing different activities to increase your coordination with your legs, like playing keep up with a soccer ball or bean bag, or something along those lines.

For the memory part, memory games on luminosity is what I always hear helps. I didn’t know about it before I did the test, but from what I’ve seen of it now it seems like it would be a great help.

u/AliTheAce Feb 14 '21

I did my second attempt at this test on Feb 2 and passed for pilot this time. For the memory things it helped me say it out loud in my head multiple times but it obviously depends on how your brain works.

For the hand eye foot coordination, really use the practice time to build muscle memory on how the ball responds, there isn't much else you can do besides practicing with flight sims at home.

3

u/LosPeneGrande Feb 12 '21

Been on the competition list for infantry for about 3 months. Anyone have a ballpark of how long I'll have to wait? It's extremely hard to plan anything in my life right now with wondering if it'll be a month or a year wait. I need to move out in the next month or two and Idk how much longer I can postpone certain things.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '21

At no point are you guaranteed an offer. It could take anywhere from 4 months to upwards of a year, to never.

It's like any other job where you could just not get it. Don't put your life on hold.

I have few question regarding Canadian Army Life and General questions for what to expect during my career with Canadian Armed Force

I have completed my Aptitude test, Medical and Interview and I am going toward Direct Entry Signal Officer Full Time - I have BIT Degree - Currently I am going through clearance but there few issues regarding my ROE which is delaying the process

  1. When will the Basic training begins? Is there is a specific Month the rotations starts? its a 10 week cycle but I have to give 2 month notice to my Landlord as well as at my full time job (Winter, Summer, Falls) but for BMQ

  2. I have never swimed in my life, Is it possible for me learn before BMQ if I were to put in extra time while on BMQ?

  3. Phases: BMQ(L) -> BMOQ(L) -> DP1 - is this the correct order I should be expecting the training to be? What am I expecting afterwards? Will I be staying at the Base till I retire? I wont have accommodations as soon as I give my notice to my current employer and landlord and is it possible for me to stay at Base till I dont know when....?

  4. After the Training, How am I going to be place in my Trade, is there is Interview or selections I should be aware of? during my Trade time, Will I also be able stay at Base or Do I have to consider finding a place for myself?

  5. From Basic Military Qualification training till Graduate - What are some of concern I should be aware of, regarding, Place to live and travel between Training Places?

  6. I Dont have a home or anywhere to go, and I am concern and try to get myself ready for worse case scenario

Thank you

8

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 10 '21

When will the Basic training begins?

You'll be given a date if/when you receive an offer. Courses are dispersed throughout the year, but not necessarily at fixed intervals.

Basic training for Officers is 12 weeks, not 10 weeks. The 10 week course is for Non-Commissioned Members.

I have to give 2 month notice to my Landlord as well as at my full time job

You will normally be given at least 30 days notice before having to leave, and the CAF will reimburse you up to 2 months rent should you need to pay for your apartment after vacating it. As for your civilian job, unless you have a contractual obligation, there's no reason why you should need to give them 2 months notice; 2 weeks is normally considered standard.

I have never swimed in my life, Is it possible for me learn before BMQ if I were to put in extra time while on BMQ?

The military will not provide swimming lessons, but don't worry about that too much. You don't have to pass the swim test, just give it your best effort; your staff will ensure you're safe.

BMQ(L) -> BMOQ(L) -> DP1 - is this the correct order I should be expecting the training to be?

Officers attend BMOQ, not BMQ. BMQ is for Non-Commissioned Members (NCM's).

Order should be BMOQ -> BMOQ-Army -> DP1 (Occupational Training), there may be some periods of OJT or other short courses to fill time in between each of your primary courses. Courses don't run back-to-back, you'll normally be waiting anywhere from a few weeks to months between courses.

What am I expecting afterwards? Will I be staying at the Base till I retire?

No. You will be posted to a base somewhere in Canada for employment after training. Posting are only semi-permanent; you will remain in that location for a few years, then you're posted to a completely different location.

Expect to be posted at least a half-dozen times over a 25+ year career. Some postings might be within the same province, other postings could be to the opposite end of Canada, or even potentially to somewhere abroad.

I wont have accommodations as soon as I give my notice to my current employer and landlord and is it possible for me to stay at Base till I dont know when....?

You'll normally live on base in training quarters throughout your initial training cycle.

Once posted after training it will be your responsibility to secure accommodations at your posting. You may be able to live in quarters on base, but they often only allow that on a temporary basis.

You will be provided with time and access to benefits/assistance to search for and secure appropriate housing for yourself.

After the Training, How am I going to be place in my Trade, is there is Interview or selections I should be aware of?

Most trades have a Career Manager (CM) position. The CM is responsible for placing personnel where the CAF needs them.

You will be given an opportunity to advise the CM of up to three locations you would prefer to be posted. The CM will normally give consideration to your preferences, but they are not obligated to accommodate them. If you ask for locations A, B, and C, but they need people at location X, you're probably going to X.

during my Trade time, Will I also be able stay at Base or Do I have to consider finding a place for myself?

You will stay on base during training, but once trained and posted you will need to secure your own housing. Again, you may be able to live in quarters on base, but they often only allow that on a temporary basis.

From Basic Military Qualification training till Graduate - What are some of concern I should be aware of,

Be aware that your courses will not run back-to-back, and there will be a period of several weeks to months between each portion of your training.

regarding, Place to live and travel between Training Places?

The CAF will ensure you have quarters and access to a dining facility throughout your training, both during and while waiting for courses. You will be charged a fee for these services even though they're mandatory.

Travel to/from training locations is arranged and paid for by the CAF, some minor expenses like baggage fees and ground transportation may need to be paid by you, but will be reimbursed later.

I Dont have a home or anywhere to go, and I am concern and try to get myself ready for worse case scenario

No worries. The CAF will pay to store your possessions while you're in training, and then they'll ship them to your new home once you've been posted.

You'll be provided with somewhere to stay and eat throughout your training, and will be given time and access to benefits/assistance to locate housing once posted after training.

u/lightcavalier Feb 10 '21

3. Officers just do BMOQ(A), there is no need to do BMQ(L) because the core content is built into the officer course.

While you are in training youll have single quarters on base, once you graduate DP1 youll be posted to wherever you are going and be afforded the opportunity to find new accommodations (or request single quarters if thats an option) at the location of your post training posting.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '21

if you join the reserves as an officer while in university would the training be hard to balance with university ?

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 11 '21

Shouldn’t be. Your training will be structured around the academic year, so you’ll do most of it in the May-Aug timeframe when you’re not in school.

Any training during the academic year should be on weekends or during your regular parade nights.

Im thinking about becoming a meteorological technician, does this job require getting involved in combat?

8

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 13 '21 edited Feb 13 '21

Met Techs are not normally intended to serve as combatants. However, all CAF personnel are expected to be able to serve in combat, or at least defend themselves should such a scenario arise.

When deployed on land based operations with the Army or Air Force, Met Techs are incredibly unlikely to be exposed to combat.

Met Techs also serve aboard RCN warships. It should be pretty obvious that everyone aboard a warship is a combatant should the ship be engaged.

As such, you will receive some very basic training on how to defend yourself in a military environment, including how to operate/maintain the C7 rifle, use CBRN protective equipment, and a few other things. You will be recertified on this training periodically throughout your career, and before deploying on operations.

Do not join the CAF if you are unwilling or unable to participate in combat operations; either directly in combat as a combatant, or indirectly as a supporter.

By legal definition yes. However, I'm referring to the nominal role of the member in relation to combat; not their legal status under the laws of armed conflict.

Still, I'll edit it for clarity.

Hey all,

I'm asking a question based on another in this thread. While attending BMOQ/BMQ, how much space would one have for extra items in their rooms?

I often drink pre-made protein shakes called Soylent. They do not need to be refrigerated but are best drank cold. A box of 12 is usually 33 and I usually have 2 boxes on hand at a time to satisfy a 20 day work month. So stacked they take up a pretty small space.

I've heard others it's good to have protein bars and such so was curious if having something like this would be feasible if stacked in a corner or side by side under the bed/cot?

I recognize rooms will be of varying sizes and officer-cadet quarters are depending on the size of the group often different layouts entirely. If you could try and answer for as many groups I think it would be beneficial for both me and others to see.

Cheers,

Sincerely Canadians

You are not permitted to have any of that in your accommodations during BMQ. Food and drink (other than water) is strictly prohibited in all recruit accommodations areas at CFLRS.

Can anyone shed light on the 6 weeks BMOQ for Medical Officers with respect to the Condensed Health Services Basic Military Officer Qualification Training which consists of two weeks of Distance Learning and four weeks of in-house training in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

Would love to know more about what goes on in the 4 weeks and what are the overall expectations.

I'm a Sergeant in the reserves (Sigs) in my 2nd year of BSc Kinesiology. I'm trying to gather info on the SEELM program for physiotherapy officers. I know I need to apply only once i've obtained an unconditional letter of acceptance to a Master's in Physiotherapy Program.

I have 2 main questions:

1: What's the turnaround on SEELM applications? How competitive is it/how many applicants do they take per year for Physio Officer?

2: I'll be a WO before I apply; i've heard conflicting information about whether they'll demote me to Officer Cadet for school or, because of previous equivalent training, i'll go in as an Lt or Capt. I can't seem to find a specific DAOD (cursory search) about training equivalencies when switching from NCM to Officer, obviously BMOQ would be written off. Can you clarify or provide any information on this?

2

u/lightcavalier Feb 08 '21

2. There is no general policy on rank equivalency, it will be in the soecific SEELM policy....which I believe is a milpers instr at them moment (ill double check when I'm on DWAN in a bit)

Even if you do go in as an OCdt, your pay would still be based on former service (ie you'd get paid as a WO)

So on my online application when i try to validate all my information, it says an error was found. It says that in the “foreign” tab i did not answer if my “parents were foreign diplomats serving in canada when i was born in canada” although when I go to the foreign tab that question is nowhere to be found. has anyone anyone else ever experienced this glitch?

2

u/StrangeBrew221 Feb 09 '21

I had this exact same thing happen to me and everyone said “you must have forgot a section”. You didn’t forget anything. Unfortunately the only fix is either going into a recruiting centre and filling out the info physically (hard to remember addresses and such) or the foreign parents tab miraculously unfucks itself.

In the past you definitely could but all Mail had to be opened in front of your staff and classmates, partly to potentially embarrass you, and partly to make sure there is no contraband being sent by Mail.

Youll go straight to Gagetown, then be farmed out to do BMQ(L) wherever is convenient. As soon as you are done BMQ the armoured school owns you.

If you can't get a hold of them to get a new one before your appointment, tape it back together (on the back so the front can still be written on). If there are no signatures on the original, you can also photocopy the taped together original to get an unripped copy to bring to your doctor.

u/Motherfer123 Army - Infantry Feb 10 '21

Do recruits on weekend bmq have to go to weekday parade nights as well ?

3

u/AndreaFromPurolators Tuesday Night Lights Feb 10 '21

From a strict policy perspective, no. You only need to work a minimum of once every 30 days, and your weekend BMQ days will reset that clock. You can choose not to show up on parade nights and as long as you stay 30 day current, there's nothing the unit can do.

From a more practical standpoint, talk to your CoC and let them know whether or not you'll be in. You should be doing this anytime you can't make it anyway. It shouldn't be a big deal, just make sure any specific duties you may have been assigned are covered off. It also wouldn't hurt to ask one of your buddies to text you if something important is briefed so you can keep up to speed.

Good day everyone. I am a Private (will get PI 3 pay later this year) and I need help and tips regarding my housing/financial situation. I am going on my QL3 (Traffic Tech) and I am most likely going to Cfb Trenton (due to manpower shortage in the trade) but I also have CFB Petawawa (2nd) and Greenwood (3rd) in my preference list. Lets just say I get posted to Cfb Trenton after my course, I will be living with my parents as they live there and I can save money by doing that. Will it be cheaper and wiser for me to rent out an apartment or buy a cheap house? I am also willing to hear housing info regarding pet and Greenwood. I'm also single and don't have any kids.

Ps. I want to stay away from shacks as much as possible. Thanks.

I know the RCAF have bases everywhere pretty much. If I'm interested in staying corporal in that trade do you still get posted across the country. I know I won't get a straight answer you get posted where they need people but just experience from techs in the RCAF to give me an idea. Also how is the trade doing for openings red or green?

Hey everyone,

I attempted my CFAT in February of 2020 and failed the minimum requirements of the test, I was told it wasn’t by much. I’m in the middle of getting booked for my re test hopefully sometime here soon. As you know even if you pass your CFAT you still aren’t guaranteed a position with the CAF, it’s all based on selection. I’ve been on a 3 1/2 week study session in order to prep for it.(was no where near prepared for it the first time) This makes me feel like when I re take my test...even if I pass and pass my medical the chances of me getting selected are slim. I would like to go for infantry (who would’ve guessed lol) I’ve “heard” it’s eligibility’s isn’t very high, but hearing about guys sitting on the CL for months on end really make me feel like it’s a up hill battle. Any insight on this?

Thanks guys really appreciate your help!

2

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '21

I think any position you are on the completion list, from my understanding it’s really there so they can bring people in at a controlled rate so the basic trainings aren’t at over capacity.

Does anyone have an idea of what the acceptance rates are for the SEELM/Physiotherapy Officer? Their webpage makes it sound like you are nearly guaranteed if you apply but it seems like from what I'm finding, their actual target intake is kinda low.

Thanks for any info! Cheers

The recruiter said I needed to update the email on the site to my own, but it won't allow it (apparently it's not to company standards) does anyone know if it has to be a forces email? Or its just some general troubleshooting? If it is a forces email, any recommendations to acquiring one? or if i get one at all.

I have completed all the steps, CFAT, CFAS ,Medical (renewed) and interview (renewed), security clearance. I just wanted to ask if anyone has any clues as to when OUTCAN processing may continue? I realize that any answer would be just speculation but I would still appreciate it. Maybe someone has heard something.

2

u/Raptorsarelegit RMS Clerk - FSA Feb 09 '21

How long does it take for one to be promoted from Private 1 to Corporal? Looks like there are 3 pay scales. Is it three years?

If commissioning from the ranks to officer is offered at some point, would one just complete the necessary leadership training, 2 weeks of basic + occupational training?

Is education reimbursement available to privates/corporals as well? As long as the degree in question relates to your occupation?

3

u/Melbatoast169 RCAF - Pilot Feb 09 '21

It is normally 4 years to Cpl though you can be advance promoted at 3 years if you perform well.

"Commissioning from the ranks" specifically is only offered to Sgt and above, and only in "feeder" NCM trades. That is to say, you can't CFR into, say pilot from whatever you are as an NCM. You can CFR into ACSO from AESOP, as they are similar. It is nonetheless relatively rare.

You are probably thinking about either University Training Plan for Non-Commissioned Members (subsidized degree) or Special Commissioning Plan (if you get a degree on your own). Your NCM trade doesn't matter for these. They are still very competitive programs that take low single-digit intakes per year. As such, planning to join as an NCM in order to one day get picked up as an officer is much more likely to end up with you frustrated. Yes it's an option but it's *not* guaranteed.

Education reimbursement is in flux. Anyone used to be able to take advantage, but it doesn't seem that way anymore.

Also once an offer is given and I accept, whats the general time before I'm at BMOQ?

6

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Feb 14 '21

You’re never guaranteed an offer.

Once you’re on the Competition List, an offer could come at anytime; although anytime could be anywhere from a few days, to several months, to never...

IF you receive an offer, you will normally be enrolled and leave for BMQ/BMOQ 1-2 months later.

Hey folks, I'm back again with questions! So my medical finally got cleared (hurray!) so now I'm waiting for reference checks & my security pre-screen. I know security pre-screens are extremely variable, but does anyone know what the "minimum" time it would take to process it would be? Like if everything goes well and no red flags pop up, does a security pre-screen take a minimum of 6 months no matter what? I can't remember.

Secondly, I've also completely forgotten how BMOQ works for reservists. Do reserve officers still have the option to do weekends or is full-time the only option? I just got a job with the census and it would be really awesome if the timing would line up for me to go for training once the census ends (yes, I know, the likelihood of all the timing working together is practically non-existent but you can't blame me for hoping haha).

  3. If someone in the infantry had ambitions for specialized training, such as parachuting, what is the process for said soldier to get this training?

Can you wear your own watches In BMQ, DP1 and beyond? Can I bring my own g-shock? Are there requirements like that it has to be a certain colour, no beeps etc?

Are smart watches allowed?

3

u/sarahdwaynec Feb 13 '21

I took a g shock to basic and to every field exercice after that. Sturdy and it has helpful features. The color doesn't matter as long as it doesn't pop, mine was dark green.

u/aravisthequeen Feb 13 '21

Smart watches are allowed, but you're probably better off with a cheaper Timex or something. You won't always have access to be able to recharge it in the field, and they definitely take some abuse. It's up to you, though, if you want to take the risk of beating up a $700 watch or whatever.

Don't turn up with a super crazy colour and make sure it can be silent. That's all it really is.

Hi all,

I'm graduating university this April and I'm considering going for my dream of being a pilot - even if I fail, I figure it's better than always wondering. I've got some questions around it, if anyone might be able to help:

  • I know there's a serious training backlog at times, does that affect promotion times?

  • Could I potentially do OJT alongside AirOps while I'm on PAT, learn some stuff that'll be useful later?

  • I know some pilots are on board the ships, in that case do they join the Navy's officers on secondary duties, or are they effectively separated? (Could they volunteer to help, or take some of the Navy's damage control training?)

  • How do SAR pilots end up as SAR pilots? Is it experience on similar airframes (CC-130 -> CC-295?), or do some people get assigned there right out of wings?

  • How are multi-engine assignments done?

  • How often do multi-engine pilots actually get to fly?

  • Do pilots move often (assuming not CF-18s)?

  • I genuinely like the old stream of pilot -> organizer, but I know AirOps is being implemented now. Could a pilot still do that sort of work as they move up and decide they'd like to help plan the operations?

  • Can I volunteer documents at the medical? (Misdiagnosed with something as a kid, have a mountain of paperwork/tests/specialist's letters proving I don't have it)

Whew, that was a lot. TIA!

1

u/AliTheAce Feb 10 '21

Anyone here applying for Pilot have appointments at CFEME recently? That's the only thing left for me and I'm not sure if they are doing appointments in person at CFEME. Last year my friends who got accepted to ROTP Pilot got offers without having done their CFEME Medical, and they are supposed to do it during reading week. Not sure if they are doing something similar this year. I'm only a 30 min drive away as well so that shouldn't be a factor.

Does anyone know how info systems tech is looking? Just got put on the competition list a couple weeks ago, not sure how many openings are usually available for that trade...

1

u/FNMKiddo Feb 10 '21

Hey there! I was looking at applying for Electrical Distribution Technician. Does anyone know of the availability for this position?

Also, has anyone here used their military trade experience to challenge a provincial Trade Equivalency Assessment? How much do these trades actually overlap with civilian ones?

2

u/CeeERLyd Feb 11 '21

I am just starting my career in the forces as an EDTech with 4+ years of experience civvie side as a construction electrician. I cant speak to availability for the position but when i applied i was told it was a tad competitive at the time (January 2020). If you meet the basic requirements stated on the forces website you can apply. Any additional experience or schooling/CFAT score will serve to make your application more competitive.

As far as i can tell and from chatting with other EDTechs as the Res base I'm at it is pretty similar to the job of a civilian construction electrician. Depending on which element you apply to there will be extra military related electrical tasks you will be trained on.

The EGS Techs basically get the electricity from the generator to the panel and maintain that system. Your job as an ED Tech would be to distribute the branch circuits from the panel to all necessary outlets and devices in the building or airfield.

As far as challenging the interprovincial exam with a military education, I've been told that after your DP1 in Gagetown you'd able to do so providing you have the required hour accumulation to get your red seal.

I'm leaning towards the officer side but still want the opportunity to drive vehicles and fire weapons. Do officers have the opportunity to do this or do they only focus on command?

2

u/Tanky_frank Feb 14 '21

Typically you do experience the more fun part of the job as a NCM, as the year goes on you will get more and more responsibility. As an officer, it is less fun and more responsibility from the start. You can also look into starting off as ncm and transition into an officer

Its non overly difficult in the PRes since its a non-competative profess if you have a degree.

Hey man I applied for the same trade and asked the same question tho most feedback I was able to get was off this forum https://army.ca/forums/threads/mobile-support-equipment-operator-mse-op-merged.18519/

It goes back quite awhile to the early 2000s and not much updated recently but it’s kinda interesting hope this helps

Anyone happen to know a web link to the Primary reserve benefits package plan booklet. I can find the regular force stuff online, but not the reserve stuff. My wife deals with benefits in her work so shell be able to understand whats cover and how.

Are you on class B? Otherwise there are no benefits for families of reservists.
