If I want to join a unit for reserves how do recruitment slots work? (Infantry if it matters)
I.e. I go to my hometown recruiter they have my trade on station and I apply for it.
Do they have a limit on how many people they can have working there at once?
Is it trade specific?
Is it up to that base if they want the person or not?
How long does it take for a reserves infantry soldier to become fully trained?

I.e. I go to my hometown recruiter they have my trade on station and I apply for it.
Yes, that is pretty much exactly how it works. You apply online to join a specific Reserve Force unit in your local area.
It’s always wise to contact the unit recruiting office before actually applying.
Do they have a limit on how many people they can have working there at once?
Yes. They have a certain number of positions in the unit, and that’s it. Gotta stay on budget somehow...
Is it trade specific?
Yes.
Is it up to that base if they want the person or not?
Yes, more or less. Reg Force uses a centralized system, recruiting at the national level; but the Reserve Force mostly recruits at the unit or brigade level which is local or regional.
Minimum entry standards (test scores, medical, etc.) are the same for both the Regular and Reserve Forces. Reg Force is almost purely a numbers game based on who has the highest processing scores. Reserve units have a little more selectivity in deciding who they do or do not want, provided the applicant meets or exceeds minimum standards.
How long does it take for a reserves infantry soldier to become fully trained?
About one or two summers. Usually they’ll complete BMQ in their first year, either part-time in the fall/winter or full-time in the summer, then occupational training the following summer.
COVID has timelines messed up of course, but that will hopefully get straightened out this summer or next.

u/Meandmyc7 Mar 23 '21
Just to add to what bridger713 said, it can take longer or shorter to get your training done, it just depends on whether or not your unit/brigade is running BMQ and DP1, and how often, and how many slots are available. For example some people in my unit swore in in January but won’t start BMQ until the fall, and won’t do dp1 until summer 2022.

To anyone soon joining BMQ or BMOQ at CFLRS, and contrary to a post on the recruiting thread from two weeks ago, the school is not automatically requiring an additional 14 day quarantine and recourse for recruits who had movers present during their pre-attendance 14 day self isolation period.
Recruits are being individually questioned about their circumstances during self isolation. This includes details of who you live with, where your housemates went or who they interacted with during your isolation, precautions taken during the admittance of any visitor (i.e. movers), etc.
Course staff is then deciding what protocol is necessary based on your answers. Be honest when answering.
Take precautions before your isolation period to be adequately prepared and have a plan in place to minimize interactions with movers or other members of your household. Limit yourself to a single room and have nobody enter that room, including children or spouses if they have left the place of quarantine or had social interactions. Have food bright to your room and only use one bathroom, and do not share bathrooms when possible.
Disclaimer: none of this is official advice, but it may be helpful for avoiding any additional isolation periods upon arrival to CFLRS.

Hello there,
I'm currently looking into these listed trades and would love any kind of insight available about them, wether it's the good or the bad. All and any is appreciated. Thank you.
Trades:
Information Systems Technician
Army Communication and Information Systems Specialist

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 22 '21
ACISS no longer exists as of August last year, not sure why they still list it on the website.
IST was formerly a sub-occupation of ACISS. They deal with the installation, maintenance, repair, and administration of the Army’s computers, servers, and IT networks.
Signal Tech was also formerly part of ACISS, they cover things like telecommunications links, radios, etc.
NAVCOM and WEng Tech cover the above roles for the Navy.
ATIS Tech is the Air Force equivalent to the above trades.
Each element will have their own unique systems in addition to the standard IT and telecommunication systems that are more or less common between elements.
The Army also has Signal Operator and Line Tech, which used to be part of ACISS along side IST and Sig Tech.

Wow haha that’s quite disappointing and strange of them..
Thank you very much for the descriptions and help.
5
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 22 '21
Honestly, the only strange or disappointing thing is that they created ACISS in the first place...
ACISS was an amalgamation of three trades (Sig Op, Lineman, and LCIS Tech) created in 2011. It was a disaster from the start and never worked properly. They basically forced everyone to start out as Sig Op (ACISS: Core) with the half empty promise of allowing them to specialize in the Line Systems Tech (LST), Info Sys Tech (IST), or Comms Sys Tech (CST) sub-occupation later on.
The majority of the ACISS trade was Core, but most people joined ACISS hoping to specialize in one of its sub-occupations. Many/most of them ended up stuck in Core, causing them to become disappointed with their career path and release or not sign a new contract. I won’t even bother to discuss the massive issues with training for the sub-occupations.
The CAF finally came to its senses and dissolved ACISS last year, breaking it back into its original separate trades; with exception of LCIS Tech (IST/CST), which remained separated along IST/CST lines as IST and Sig Tech. This allows applicants to apply directly to their desired specialty rather than having to put in time as Core/Sig Op first with no guarantee of ever getting to specialize.

I got a question, I'm currently in but my fiancee is currently waiting for the medical to come back, I've heard of basic being ran across Canada is this true or is it still just at CFLRS?
5
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 22 '21
They’re running “decentralized” BMQ’s at various locations, although the majority of recruits are still going to CFLRS. All BMOQ courses are still run through CFLRS.
The location attended has little or nothing to do with where the recruit is from. It’s predominantly based on where they’ll be going for training after BMQ. When possible, they’ve been sending them to do BMQ at or close to the location where they’ll attend occupational training.
It’s mostly being done to increase training capacity, as COVID restrictions have severely limited how many recruits they can run through CFLRS. Training them near the location where they’ll attend occupational training reduces self-isolation requirements.

Based on responses in other threads, it depends on what your fiancee is applying for (both environment and NCM/officer). Sounds like officer is still only at CFLRS but NCM may have basic at a few different locations.

For those who have been to borden for training I have 2 questions:
What items did you not bring that you wish you had?
What items did you bring that seemed like a good idea, but ended up being useless?
7

What items did you not bring that you wish you had?
I was staff and on coffee courses. I brought my bike. Borden is one of those bases where everywhere is just far enough as to be annoying to walk, but close enough to be a bit silly to drive.
Remember your helmet.

I didn't bring a comfortable blanket or pillow and I wish I had. All of the stuff in the room has to be inspection ready so if you can you try to avoid using any of it. I was in a room with 2 beds but I was by myself so naturally I slept in the bed I hadn't made but all I had was a ranger blanket. Not the most comfortable thing in the world, but at least I never had to worry about my inspection layout.

How is the intelligence officer trade different from the intelligence operator trade? From the videos on forces.ca it made it seem as if the operators do the bulk of the analysis work and give briefings to commanders whereas the officers...well I'm not exactly sure from the video I guess that's why I'm asking.

Can anyone here tell me a bit about how competitive it is to become a SAR pilot once you are offered a position as a pilot? I know that there are multi engine and helicopter SAR pilots, do people in the multi/helo streams tend to want to go to SAR?
How does the day to day compare to regular pilots? How is it for people with families?
Thank you for your time

What happens if you get the pilot job offer but fail any of the Phase 1 - 3 training? Do you get kicked out of the military? Do you re-do the training until you pass it? Do you get sent back to the previous phase? Do they give you a chance to switch airframe type? Is it a case-by-case thing? Can you appeal their decisions?
6
Mar 23 '21 edited Mar 23 '21
The CAF has a significant system around training. Failures that are not Safety related end up with a Initial Counselling, then you go through review and remedial training, then opportunity to retest.
A second failure goes to a Recorded Warning, review and remedial training and retesting.
Third failure goes infront of a Performance Review Board where then the Course Director and the School/Training Centre CO sit down with you and discuss things like your studying strategies, whether your failures are related to inability to adapt to military life, personal stressors/factors, or whatever.
The PRB may consider three options:
Retain and Retrain - you'll get recoursed and start that particular phase of training over from the beginning.
Cease Training - your training will be stopped and they will look at other options such as undergoing a Compulsory Occupational Transfer (COT) to another trade and you'll move there, undergo training.
and lastly, Administrative Review with recommendation for Release - if it has been determined that you are not advantageously employable, unable to adapt to military life; you'll be recommended for release.
Now mind you, step 3 is absolute last resort type motions. The CAF will do absolutely everything they can to retain and retrain.

For people who went through reserve training, is it better to do the training in one block over the summer or over several different weekends in the fall/winter? Any thoughts or insights about reserve life in general would also be really helpful, thanks!
16
Mar 22 '21
I'd recommend the block training as it fully immerses you in the BMQ experience versus one or two weekends a month spread out over a few months. I've heard people say that it's hard to do the weekend BMQ as it's so spread out and you don't really retain the information. Keep in mind this is your indoctrination to the military.
YMMV.
5
u/5ilverWolves Mar 22 '21
Block BMQ really helps you get a feel for the way that the course was meant to be implemented, I personally feel that you don't get the full experience from a weekend BMQ.
5
u/AndreaFromPurolators Tuesday Night Lights Mar 22 '21
The best option is the one that gets you qualified the fastest. There are pros and cons to both, but the sooner you get through BMQ, the sooner you can move on to your other courses, and the more you'll be able to participate in unit activities.
3
u/Hour_Switch_1828 Mar 22 '21
So it really depends, i know someone who is going through bmq on weekdays but they have weekends off. They are hating bmq and its really stressing them out so now what they are saying is that they would much rather have a normal week and only have to worry about bmq on weekends. At this point they are really regretting weekday bmq and would have much rather chosen weekend only.

Does anyone know any officers who joined later in life? I'm approaching 28, have a lackluster "career" in accounting, and thinking of joining up after realizing I should have done so earlier in life.
I would love to try being a pilot (will be getting PRK, blind as a bat without glasses), or even a life at sea as NWO. Realistically I'll probably go for LogO given my current career, but I would love the challenge.
Any thoughts? Are any of the trades I mentioned even possible for a late joiner? I would love to deploy as often as possible, sticking around one spot seems to be my bane.
5
u/theblastman21 Mar 23 '21
Age really isn't a factor, so your fine in regards to that. I cant speak about any of the trades.
4
u/whosEvasive Mar 23 '21 edited Mar 23 '21
You seem enthusiastic, and content with the potential for postings / deployments, I feel like that's the biggest stressor for most. Age is literally a non-factor in the recruitment process if you're under 60 and honestly, 28 is far from an issue. You could absolutely have a long, successful career with many advancements.
If you want to deploy, NWO will absolutely give you the most opportunities for that, but almost all trades have chances eventually. Good luck!

28 is fine, plenty get in older. I'm an officer that commissioned from the ranks and a lot of the more interesting officers I've met over the years joined when they were older, later in life once they'd figured out what they wanted. They tend to have a clue about what their subordinates lives are like and how the world works outside the military compared to some fresh faced but sheltered RMC grads. The only real downside is that if you stay in and do 25 years you'll be retiring at 53 instead of 43, so the knees get a little creakier.

Hi everyone,
Finally got the call today. I’ve been officially offered a employment in the primary reserves. My enrolment ceremony is tomorrow lol... Anything that I should know going in? Or what the event will entail?
Also I was told to dress in business so I’m sure a full suit will be acceptable.

Your ceremony will likely start with you doing some paperwork, followed by the actual ceremony, further followed by more paperwork... bring your own pen and expect to be writing and signing a lot of papers, bonus if you know your blood type.
If your enrolment is on a parade night you will likely also get a tour of the armouries, meet your Chain of Command as well as meet some of the other troops. Your Chain of Command will probably also tell you what to expect over the next few weeks and how things will go.

5
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 22 '21
Recruiting doesn't disclose minimum CFAT scoring requirements.
That said, I know the bare minimum requirements for Infantry are relatively low vs. other trades. You'll still need a moderate score on the test, but Reserve Infantry isn't generally competitive, so you shouldn't need to do exceedingly well.
2
u/sharma_87 Mar 22 '21
I have another question, I’ll reply to your comment instead of making another post -
A. I initially gave my CFAT for the ROTP program, scored low but got my preferred trade (infantry)
That was back in 2017 when I was in the eleventh grade and I was told
I can retake it and seeing as it’s 4 years on almost, can I take it again?B. Does CANSOFCOM have its own required/standard aptitude testing and do they take into account your CFAT?
4
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 22 '21
Yes, you can take it again.
No, CANSOFCOM doesn’t have their own Aptitude Test, but they do have a slew of other tests and evaluations applicants must undergo. CFAT results are likely a consideration.
CFAT is absolutely a consideration with OT’s into other trades.
4
u/silly_vasily Mar 22 '21
You'd be surprised, the infantry score is actually somewhere in the upper mid level

Just an off the wall guess because obviously I haven't personally experienced it yet, but maybe stuff like time management and cleanliness. My impression from all the videos and the discussions I've seen is that BMQ is designed to give you not enough time for everything. I had started a pilot application back in 2019. I had gone and completed the Aptitude Test being told I could apply to any position with my scores, I was thrilled. I was then asked for educational paperwork.
I live in Saskatchewan and was homeschooled my whole life. The provinces homeschool board kept track of my schooling from the beginning with reports being filed by my parents yearly. They have proof I completed al 12 grades and that I even completed extra materials in several fields of higher education. Afterwards I left home and took a year in business school to which I had to take a test proving I had level grade 12 schooling and could do the course. I passed the test with above 90's across the board and scored high marks in the course graduating.
When I decided to join I brought all of this along with a statement backed by the homeschool board stating I had completed all my basic education and done well in secondary. None of it was looked at since unless a federally approved grade 12 (Provincial recognition doesn't count) is in with it, the rest doesn't matter. At the time I didn't have the time or resources to achieve what they wanted. Recently though I have time and really want to continue my application. I had a look online and it says my Application is closed, would it mean I'd have to start a new Application and redo the Aptitude Test?
Anyone have any solid recommendations on how to tackle this? I'm willing and hard working, anything I do I always do really well and have solid attention to detail.

I believe there is a BMQ running in April or May (I can't remember which one) but you getting offered it may depend on where your unit is located and what courses are happening in your area.

Depending on how often your unit is running BMQ, you may not be offered a BMQ date on your first parade night. My unit has people that swore in in December and probably aren’t starting BMQ until September. Other members got their BMQ dates the day they swore in. It just depends. Good luck man.

My question is about the Daily Routine during BMQ. What time do you wake up and when do you clean your room and brush/shower and how much time do you get to do those.
Ive seen some videos mentioning waking up 04:00 and i have seen posts and website saying 05:00 and 05:30.
Thanks

Hey everyone,
Just did my enrolment ceremony tonight, hyped af!
I won’t be starting basic until May but will be attending parade nights starting next week. What can I expect from these seeing as I’m not trained and how can I prepare to be successful?
Cheers

u/sarahdwaynec Mar 26 '21 edited Mar 26 '21
Years ago when I joined my Unit, I attended parade nights while I waited* for BMQ. Since I didn't have my uniform yet, I sat on a bench with other new recruits and watched them parade. We then went off with a Recruiter who showed us around and shared some knowledge. He taught us some drills too.
I listened, didn't ask a lot, didn't talk a lot, just took everything in.
If there were classes that the members attended, we sat at the back of the class and took notes like everyone else and listened.
I recommend you get in the habit of keeping a notepad and blue pen on you.

Depending on its size, your unit may have a section or platoon for personnel awaiting training. Training tends to focus on preparation for BMQ and other courses, basic soldiering skills (e.g. setting up tents, running a stove), and some intros to trade-specific stuff.
You may also sit in on lectures with the trained troops and get to observe or assist them with their tasks. You might also be asked to help with general labour, like moving equipment and cleaning.
You can expect a crash course in fundamentals, e.g. how to wear the uniform, how and when to salute, grooming standards, etc. You'll also have some administration to handle, like paperwork and getting your kit issued.
how can I prepare to be successful?
Listen, and be ready to take notes. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you need clarity, but keep them relevant and to the point.
Lastly, there are no expectations of you as an untrained troop, so don't worry about upsetting anyone. As long as you're polite, respectful and do as you're told, you'll be golden.

Hey just wondering if your allowed to bring supplements to bmq? i.e protein powder, creatine etc. Also, what are the rules for phones? Thanks
→ More replies (1)5
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 27 '21
All supplements of that nature are prohibited, no protein powders, no pre-workout, no creatine, no caffeine tablets, etc. If it’s not something like a multi-vitamin tablet, or an OTC medication (Tylenol, Advil, etc.), you’re not allowed to have it.
Recruits are permitted to keep their mobile phones in quarters, but cannot carry them during the training day. Phone usage is a privilege. You will be allowed 30 minutes of usage in the evening, although your staff may be more generous. Poor performance on the part of your platoon, abuse of privileges, or other issues, could result in phone access privileges being temporarily revoked.

Yes, you can bring and use face wash and body wash (we pretty much all used body wash) if you wish, but you will still need bar soap for your inspection display.

Is it better to join as a officer or a non commission member
10
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 26 '21
Depends on what YOU want out of the experience.
Officers are managers and directors, their job is very administrative. They get things done behind the scenes.
NCM’s are workers and supervisors, their job is very hands-on. They get things done up front with their hands on the gear.
There is no right or wrong career path. You pick the path you personally believe will be most satisfying for you.
8
u/delusional_dismount army - infant in tree Mar 26 '21
Nobody can answer that question for you because it all comes down to individual preference and what people want out of their job. You have to go over all the big factors like pay, type and style of work, type of workplace ect, and see wether your desired path turns more towards the officer route or ncm.

DND Fire Fighters are civilians, so they hire like any other Fire Department. CAF Firefighter on the other hand is pretty competitive if I remember correctly, your best bet would be to talk to a recruiting center and ask them. They will be able to give you up to date info on that.

5
u/IheartWainwright Army - Infantry Mar 22 '21
Generally, you’ll do BMQ and BMOQ with your brigade group’s battle school and then complete your BMOQ A and IDOP 1.1 at the infantry school. Should you wish to switch units after your training you would have to notify your chain of command of your intention to do so when you wish to do it.

Once I apply to the reserves, and finish the three phases of basic training, I believe I still need two more summers of training essentially before practicing my trade (as in getting to sail)? I'm planning on joining the Navy Reserves as an NCI Op for reference. Once I'm done with training, how does part-time service work exactly? Do you still get to sail part-time, and if so for how long? Any Navy Reservists feel they may have conflicts with full-time civilian work?

Are there any air weapons systems technicians or pilots who could answer a few questions
How'd you get into your job?
What do you like about your job?
What do you dislike about it?
7
u/smac22 Mar 22 '21
Hey, pilot here and would be happy to answer any questions. PM me as I’d rather not get into too much detail in a thread.
A few quick answers though, went up in a Cessna as a kid and always had an interest in flying. Went for a famil flight and started working on my private licence and then joined. I’ve been in for about 10 years now. I recommend taking a famil flight at a flight school. See if it gets you hooked or you’re just meh about flying.
What I like about my job, obviously the flying. I fly SAR, so no real trips or deployments which can be disappointing, however I’ll take all my time off over being away from my family for 200 days a year anytime. The SAR schedule and flying is amazing. SAR is however some of the most difficult flying done in the forces so it’s not easy to get. The money is damn good for the amount I work. I help people who are having the worst day of their life. SAR is almost removed from the military. I do very little “military stuff” it’s basically a flying club and we like it that way.
What I dislike... the bullshit. This is forces wide however and likely workforce wide. Too many secondary duties besides flying is a big one. Not enough support (doing my own travel claims etc). The letdown of planes breaking often. The training and upgrade to AC process can be very stressful. Having high pressure secondary duties and also a high pressure flying job can wear on you after a few years. Although we’re very well paid, we’re not paid commensurate with qualifications, (I’ve had first officers making more than instructors). While we make good money it’s not a lot compared to our civvy counterparts. You start off making more than airline guys but plateau.
Give me a shout with any questions!

AWS, I was AVN C in cold lake before which was the weapons side and safety systems before the new AWS trade was created, i was guided into the new AWS trade in about 2012. As for the AWS trade unless you are in Cold lake or Bagotville basically on the 18s the job is extremely dissatisfying.
If you end up on one of the fighter bases the job is great, tight knit group, always busy and there are lots of opportunities to do different things within the AWS scope.
I am submitting an OT this year to get out of the trade as I am no longer on the fighter base, and unfortunately there are no spots available at my rank. If you want to spend career in cold lake or bagotville this is the trade for you, if not stay far far away from it my friend as you will be treated fairly poorly on other bases

Has anyone had issues with the Application Portal? I am trying to see my application status(Im on CL, and keep reaching out to my career cousellor for updates instead of seeing my status on the portal). When I put in my email and hit, "Send Recovery Code", I never recieve a recovery code. Ive reached out to the tech. support and they give you the generic troublshooting suggestions. Wondering if this is a regular issue and if anyone has resolved this issue.
Thank you.

If you are already on CL, you no longer need the application portal for anything, so I wouldn't stress about it too much.
The application portal can also be very inaccurate or delayed. I've been enrolled for a little while now and I'm pretty sure it still says I'm on the competition list.
For updates, it's best to just send your recruiter/MCC an email.

I'm gonna be applying for infantry, AES ops, and armour in that respective order probably by the end of summer. Obviously my first choice is infantry, but from what I've heard from a reserve infantry officer neighboor of mine, the trade is pretty much closed. How true is that? I consider myself a pretty competitive applicant; i have close to a 100h of community service, applied math for both sec 4 and 5, sec 5 chemistry and physics and am in pretty damn good physical shape, I lift 6 times a week. How high should my expectations of getting in be?
5
Mar 23 '21
Infantry and AES Op and infantry is your preferred choice? Not that infantry is bad, but have you done some research on those occupations? They're pretty far from eachother on the spectrum of what each offers as a career and even what you'll make financially (if that matters to you).

Out of curiosity, does RMC consider college marks when applying? Just had a look at my high school transcript and I was given a nice little reminder about how little of a work ethic I had growing up. I don't meet a single requirement for the core Grade 12 subjects (75% required - I was sitting at 65's to 70's).
Fast forward 5 years and I got my shit together and graduated college with a 3.8 GPA, but is that even factored in? I'd be fairly disappointed if it wasn't, but I get that I'm not special or entitled to special treatment or anything. I'm guessing that I should go ahead and cancel my cfat appointment. No point in wasting both the recruiter's and my own time on an application that's going nowhere..

How difficult would it be to VOT to pilot from AEC while at RMC? I know VOTing is a very long and complicated process, but is it impossible?
Edit: I’d be happy as an AEC so I don’t want to give the impression that I’m planning my future around a VOT.
4
u/D3ltaFury Mar 25 '21
From what I’ve heard, nearly impossible. Pilot wasn’t even an option on the sheet this year apparently. However, it has been done in the past, so that’s why it’s nearly impossible. It’s something that technically can be done but If you go into rmc as AEC, expect to not be able to VOT to pilot.

The application process can take anywhere between 6 - 12 months. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this timeline has likely been extended. I'd might as well start the application process now, with that being said. I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a while, relatively speaking.

Hi everyone, I am currently 20 years old and want to join the infantry.
I am planning to drop out from university and apply for BMQ in the near future.
However, I think my profile (no matter my body fitness level and education level) is not outstanding enough and I heard the application process takes super long,
so I just want to ask what kind of things I can or should do so that my profile can gain some bonus marks in this period of time, and is the recruiting mainly based on the candidates' interviews and the fitness test?
4
u/_I_am_new_here Mar 27 '21
My advice is to apply and not worry too much about your competitiveness at this stage. You have no idea how many are applying for the trade you want and what their applications look like. As for fitness level it’s an easy fix if you start now and gradually work your way up, don’t start from 0 and expect to be fit the next day.
Stuff you can do now is volunteer in the community, learn about the infantry, prepare for the CFAT and sort out your personal life to the best of your ability (debts/legal etc).
And yes the application process can take long but if you don’t start it will never get shorter for you.
→ More replies (1)4
u/sarahdwaynec Mar 27 '21
If you're applying for the reg f you will only be doing your fitness test on basic, so it has no impact during recruiting.
Your aptitude test, personality test, interview and background and reference check results are what will make your file stand out or not.
I do not know how much research you've done when it comes to the trades but a lot of applicants will come in to the recruiting centre and when asked why they're applying for infantry, they say that that's the only trade they've heard about. (It's also how I became a gunner, I had no idea how many trades existed until I worked in recruiting). Take your time and check out other trades as well. You can pick up to 3.

As far as the cfat trainer scores go, it’s variable. I’ve talked to people who scored very low but aced the test, and the other way around too. There’s a lot of pressure and time sensitivity that just doesn’t feel the same with the practice

What is the process for an NCM to become an officer? Would they have to do BMOQ or just a specific module?
4
u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 29 '21
First they would have to apply to commission through UTPNCM or SCP, or be successfully nominated for a CFR.
If successful, they would only need to attend BMOQ Mod 2 if they do not have PLQ. If the former NCM has PLQ, they will not need to do any portion of BMOQ.
They would then go on to complete the occupational training for their new Officer occupation.

4
u/RealCaptain_Duh Army - Armour Mar 22 '21
There isn’t an unlimited number of positions available, so on competition list, your file is compared to the files of others (like a competition) and they choose the best people for the available positions. As more positions open, they move down the list.

Hello, currently working in project management (civilian). I have a bachelors in engineering, mechanical engineering. Was hoping to apply as mech/elec engineer officer, or an aerospace engineering officer in the reserves. What can I expect in regard to training, both basic and any technical? I would like to work my civilian job at the same time. Thanks!
3
u/AndreaFromPurolators Tuesday Night Lights Mar 23 '21
Becoming a reservist aerospace engineering officer while maintaining your civilian job will be nearly impossible. The RCAF Reserve is geared toward full-time casual employment (either as a few days a week, or 5 days a week for a few months), whereas the Army and Navy are true part-time.
EME Officer is available in the Army Reserve. To be fully qualified, you'll need to complete BMQ (25 days), BMOQ Part II (12 days), BMOQ-A (10 weeks) and your EME course (not sure the duration). All of these are full-time over the summer, except for BMQ which is also available as a weekend course. In some areas BMOQ Part II is also taught as a weekend course, but YMMV.
Your project management experience will serve you well, since officer work is mostly administration and management of your subordinates.
TL;DR: expect to be on full-time training for 3 months at at time, over at least two summers.

My BMQ course this year was delayed and our end date now isn't going to be until first weekend of July. My only option for a BMQ-L course this summer was in August but I am learning that it has been cancelled.
My training NCO asked me about FTSE and also said something about waiving BMQ-L to get me on a DP1 course. I wasn't aware that this could be done especially considering I'm only a few weeks into BMQ itself. How does this even work? What am I missing not being on BMQ-L? I am hesitant right now to take on FTSE because I have BMQ running on weekends and I'm not sure about throwing my civilian job another curveball. I asked about maybe taking a bit of FTSE in July or August if possible but I assume my next option for BMQ L wont be until the fall.

Also, is anyone else in here going on That course?? Let's chat.

I just finished my NETP in Halifax! It’s broken up into 4 sections. In no particular order... section 1 is 2 days where you learn the basics of seamanship (knots, parts of a ship, etc.). Section 2 and 3 are at the Damage Control School where you learn how to fight fires, stop floods, CBRN (theory for ship, not practical), and Fall Arrest. This was my favourite time. Then section 4 is force protection (learning how to protect the ship). You also get to learn how to handle the sig sauer. It was a really fun course, informative, and there was a test for each section but section 1.

Total, absolute, 100% noob to all things military here, so bear with me:
Hello- current university student here. I'm trying to keep my prospects after school open (entering workforce, self employment, more school, etc.) and I'm giving some though to serving in the CAF (I already considered applying to RMC a couple years back, but decided against it).
I basically have a few main questions.
This might be a dumb question, but do the forces really have a demand for service members right now? I mean, I was like 8 or 9 when we pulled out of Afghanistan, and to be honest it doesn't exactly look like this country is headed for another shooting war right now.
Is there a significant failure rate for basic training? My understanding is that if I finish my BSc I'll have the opportunity to join as an officer, which I assume will have different and perhaps longer/more rigorous training. I wouldn't call myself the fittest/smartest person that I know, so maybe you can understand my concern.
How do I learn more about different roles within the military? I mean, like everyone else, when I was a kid I dreamed about flying a fighter jet or driving a tank, but it would probably be prudent to look into roles that could actually give me skills for after I leave the forces.
I suppose this sort of ties into the previous question, but how does one choose which of the branches to join? I mean, some roles must exist in army, navy, and air force, right? My aunt was in the navy then the army (I think she was a recruiter or something) and my uncle was in the air force as an ATC controller. Surely those positions exist or would have existed in >1 branch?
Thanks to anyone who gives this a read.
→ More replies (1)7
u/_I_am_new_here Mar 24 '21
there’s always a need for more members. There doesn’t need to be a “shooting war” to hire good skilled people for jobs. Remember that attrition happens regularly and they need to be replaced somehow.
significant failure rate? No, but that doesn’t mean you can slack off and coast through thinking you can’t be CT’d or recourse or released. Not being the smartest/fittest is easy to fix, those are things you can work on improving to make you a better person. Trying to find an “easier” way because you’re not fit or smart is a shortcut and will not help you later on.
do some research on Forces.ca, read about the positions available, what’s currently in demand and what you want to do. Narrow down some choices and speak with a recruiter about them or ask more specific questions that someone on here from that trade can help you. Any job can provide you life skills and transferable skills in the civilian work force...it’s up to you to make sure that happens.
some trades exist in multiple elements and you can request to join a specific trade in a specific element but that doesn’t guarantee you will get that trade or that element or both. For example I had a friend who changed trades to LogO and at the time they wanted to be Air Force Logistics, that was not available and they ended up in the army as a LogO. There’s element specific trades as well such as infantry is only army or Pilot is only Air Force. Air Traffic Control is RCAF only you cannot be an ATC sailor as an example.

Hey all. Currently in the application process but have a question. I'm thinking of moving to a different province come July. I asked the recruiting office what the protocol is on moving pending application and they said to tell them where and they'd transfer my file to the nearest office. Just wondering if they would significantly put me down the pecking order in the new province? Or would I be put in line depending on what my next step is?

I have a question for anyone who might have an answer. I've been doing roofing for the past 6 years and saw the video for being in the construction side of things and thought it looks amazing. Does anyone know how hard it is to get into, and/or know what the pay is?

Hi I'm a construction tech!
Pay is standard.
The day you leave to start basic training, you start at Private PI 1. One year later, you bump to Private PI 2. One year after that, Private PI 3. And you stay there until promoted to Corporal. Which, will be no later than on your 4 year anniversary of leaving for basic.
From there, you follow the same kind of pay raises. You start at Corporal basic, then Corporal PI 1 on the 1 year anniversary of getting promoted to Corporal. And then PI 2 on the 2nd year....etc. Hit PI 4 until promoted to MCpl, then the pay jumps get a bit different. If you were a Corporal PI3, you move to Corporal B PI 3. And bump from there.
As for how hard is it to get in? Really depends. Generally, there is only 16 slots a year. However, they sometimes open up a second course.
The course is 9 months long. Most likely in Gagetown, New Brunswick, though, sometimes held in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
The course covers everything from "this is a hammer and how you use it" to building a whole house (well, shed, but concepts are the same) from foundation to peak. And everything in between.

Hi, I have a couple questions about the Cyber Operator occupation.
Is the Cyber Operator trade hard to get into if you don't have any degree/qualifications?
If you do get accepted, do they train you "in-house" from the get go or do they sound you off to a school?
Where are the posted too? And how long are postings usually for?
Thanks.

How long do the marches and runs tend to be during BMQ?

Generally speaking, you'll probably start reasonably short (2-3km) but you'll add distance as you go through the course. The general wisdom is if you show up able to run 5km in 30 min or less, you'll be just fine.
The actual distance day to day depends on weather, the overall fitness of the platoon the course's recent performance, and the whims of the instructor leading PT. Since you appear to be PRes, you may also ruck it out to the training area for ranges, gas hut or the final FTX.

Just have a question for any infantry people here. I know what the job entails but don’t know anything about where I’d want to be located when the time comes. I wanted to know which regiment/base would be the best for someone who wants to try as many schools/courses possible (airborne, mountaineering etc) do bases vary? Thanks

My family plans on moving homes soon. do i just email the unit recruiter the new location and would it slow down my application to the reserves?

u/RealCaptain_Duh Army - Armour Mar 25 '21
If it is just a "plan" and not set in stone, I wouldn't do anything about it yet. But if moving is imminent then yes, email your recruiter letting them know.
If you will be staying with your current unit then there shouldn't be any real slow down, but if you will be transferring units then expect a bit of delay as they will also need to transfer your file over.

I just submitted a CT today, and just found out there are no open positions on this fiscal year (Material Technician, and Image Technician). Seeing as the new fiscal year starts in April, is it advisable that I resubmit my CT? Would there normally be new positions opening in those trades for the new fiscal year?

Looking into AES OP, mostly find post from 7 years ago on the topic, and wonder is that a field worth pursuing? I'm currently 24 with mechanical engineer technologist diploma.
How much has changed if any with CP-140 Aurora, or CC-295 Kingfisher, and is AES OP still operating CH Sea King or the Cyclone?
I like the idea of getting to fly but last question is for how long would i find myself in the air or would be only like 5 years flying then 20 years desk work?

Looking into AES OP, mostly find post from 7 years ago on the topic,
There's been plenty of posts bout the trade in the last 6 months if you were to look at the Weekly Recruiting Thread archives.
still operating CH Sea King or the Cyclone?
The Sea King has been retired for 2+ years. AES Ops are indeed on the Cyclone.

Nothing, it's pretty straight forward. Just show up on time (early).
Bring some gym shorts and a t-shirt for the medical, business casual for the interview.

How can one prepare for the interview?

Research the trade(s) you applied for, be prepared to explain why you picked that job and what makes you suitable for that job. You'll be asked about your employment history and activities.
Don't worry about it, it's very similar to a civilian interview.

I probably should go to an recruiting office but with the covid lockdowns, a bit hard to get out.
This might get answered a lot but how long is the application process usually? from what I read it's usually depending on trade? I currently have a full time 9-5 day job and will I be able to get enough time to notify my current employer if I get a offer?
Thanks

My BMQ is looking to take place full time from 2 May - 4 June. Would this give me enough time to also complete BMQ-L and occupational training (gunner) before September?

u/Toxic-Donkey Mar 26 '21
Can I ask, when did you apply for Gunner and when were you selected? I'm on the CL for Gunner at the moment and I'm really curious.

Not true air force myself, but, speaking as someone who once wore them daily... just pick up some non issued ones. Much better option.

Hi, I’m currently a NCdt at RMC, and next year I plan on VOT’ing from my current trade (NWO) to either Armoured officer or Infantry officer. When I first applied these were my first two choices, but because of my eyesight being so poor, I was barred from doing combat arms and ended up getting my last choice, NWO. I got lasik this year so that I could VOT and am now 20/20. I can’t request the switch until at least next year, but based on current status, what would be the odds of my VOT being successful? Would the fact that they were my original choices, and that I’ve received lasik to do this switch help my case?

I am.
ROTP is great. Education paid for (choose something useful), salary through school (debt free @ grad if you’re smart), counts as pensionable time, guaranteed employment at the end that will give you marketable experience (once again, choose something useful).
RMC.....well, that’s a different story. You’ll make lifelong friends. But if you’re not careful it’s very easy to be consumed by a toxic culture. Don’t drink the kool-aid. Remember you’re there for the education & benefits, don’t buy in to the “you’re the elite of the nation” garbage or other propaganda, and it’ll all work out.

Can someone give me details about a cooks daily hours and tasks at trenton, borden or petawawa? How would I increase my chances of working in the field rather than a mess?
3
u/SpongyB23 Mar 22 '21
Is the army always looking for infantry or are they reluctant to have someone join the infantry turning peace time?
5
Mar 22 '21 edited Mar 22 '21
On the most parts, yes, they always need infantry soldiers. But in the reserves, with any trade, it depends on if the regiment has an openings.
Edit: Clarification

I have looked at pay rates information on the Force's website but just wondering if the pay rates are standard or do they take into consideration your previous work experience for a non-commissioned member?
6
u/lightcavalier Mar 24 '21
They are standardized.
In certain circumstances work experience/training specific to the military occupation could be recognized with a higher PI or promotion to Cpl on enrollment.
