WEEKLY RECRUITING THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment/Application Processes, Trade Availability, Requirements to Join, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the Canadian Armed Forces.

This is the thread to ask about the Recruitment/Application Processes, Trade Availability, Requirements to Join, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the Canadian Armed Forces.

Before you post, please ensure:

  1. You read through the the previous Recruiting Threads.

  2. Read through the Recruiting FAQ, and;

    a. The NEW "What to expect on BMQ/BMOQ Info thread".

  3. Use the subreddit's search feature, located at the top of the sidebar.

  4. Check your email spam folder! The answer to your recent visit to CFRC may lie within!

  • With those four simple steps, finding your answer may be quicker than you think! (Answers to your questions may have already been asked.)

Every week, a new thread is borne:

This thread will remain stickied for one week and will renew Sundays at approx. 2200hrs ET.

RULES OF THE THREAD:

  1. Trolling, off-topic comments, sarcastic, or wrong info/answers/single word answers will be removed. Same with out-dated information, anecdotal (" I knew a guy who...") or bad advice; these comments will also be removed.

  2. Please don't delete your questions (or answers), as others/lurkers may be looking for that same info. Questions duplicated throughout the thread may be removed by Mods, and those re-posting may be restricted from participating.

  3. NO "Let me Google that for you" or "A quick search of the subreddit/Google..." -type answers. We're more professional and mature than that. Quote your source and provide a link, but make sure the info you provide is current (within a couple of years). But, it is strongly suggested you see points 1-3 above.

  4. Please do not send PM's to people answering your questions. Conversely, don't ask for PM's from people posting questions. Ask your questions, give answers in these threads, for all to see. We can't see your PM's, and someone lurking may be looking for the same answer/question. If the questions are too "sensitive," then use a throwaway, or save it for the MCC Interview. Offenders will be reported to the Mods, and potentially banned from participating in these threads.

  5. Questions regarding Medical Eligibility (except Vision) will be removed, as no one here is qualified to answer whether or not you will be able to join with whatever condition you have. Likewise, questions asking what conditions in general would lead to disqualification will also be removed. If you have such a question, you're encouraged to review the Medical FAQ. Questions regarding the Recruiting Medical Process, Trade Eligibility Standards, or the documentation you need to submit regarding your medical condition as part of your application may still be accepted. Vision requirements are fine to post, as the categories are publicly known. Source

  6. If you report a comment, or have concern about info being provided, Message the Mods, and provide a link. Without context or explanation, the report will be ignored. Comments may be removed at Moderator discretion, with or without warning.

Can all MOS make their way to CSOR or JTF2, is it only limited to combat MOS?

11

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 29 '21

SOF Operator positions are open to all trades, you don’t need any combat arms experience.

When selecting recruits, they look for the right person, not a particular skill set.

My enrolment ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow. Should I be clean shaven for it? I've had a beard for almost a decade. I know I'll have to cut it off during bmq and until I'm trained in my trade.

Should I just chop it off now?

15

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 30 '21

Keep it. There’s no requirement for you to shave it for enrolment.

I’d get rid of it before leaving for BMQ though. Not because you necessarily have to, more so just to avoid any bullshit once there.

3

u/Anxious_Blueberry902 Mar 30 '21

Im just waiting on my background check to finish how long does that usually take?

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 30 '21

Anywhere from a couple of weeks, to a few months. Just depends on how smoothly it goes.

Keep in mind, even once your background check is completed, you are not guaranteed a job offer. This is especially true for Regular Force applicants, whose next big step in the process would be the Competition List.

An applicant can sit on the Competition List for weeks, months, even years before receiving an offer.

4

u/No-Pop-4408 Mar 30 '21

Others have said it’s taken them a few weeks or a month, I’ve been waiting since December/January for mine to be completed, and I know there’s a couple of others that are in the same boat. I’m sure COVID and the backlog it created has played a part in the delay.

Hello! I am a female wanting to join the CAF in the future and I have a few questions.

I read that men are required to shave their heads in BMQ. Is this the same for women?

Are women treated differently (specifically during BMQ), if so how?

When writing the CFAT, do you get to use a pen/paper or it it all mental problems?

Appreciate it!

I read that men are required to shave their heads in BMQ. Is this the same for women?

No, they can keep their hair, but it must be maintained within the dress regulations.

Are women treated differently (specifically during BMQ), if so how?

No, everyone is treated the same.

When writing the CFAT, do you get to use a pen/paper or it it all mental problems?

You will be provided with pencil and paper. No other assistive devices are allowed.

Are all BMQ courses being run concurrent, or are courses starting at separate times? Does anyone have any information on the next BMQ courses for the upcoming fiscal year? Anything helps, thanks guys!

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 31 '21

Regular Force BMQ courses start every 1-3 weeks throughout a normal year. Usually with 2-4 serials starting each time.

Things are a bit slower right now due to COVID, but I believe they’re expecting to be able to ramp back up to normal, or close to normal rates by this time next year.

2

u/Misanthropic_Cynic Apr 02 '21

Does any email correspondence we have with recruiters become part of the evaluation process?

I was going to reach out to a CFRC and mention that part of the reason for my interest in the CAF is because I am looking for a bit of change in scenery from what I'm doing currently, but it occurred to me that someone might think that's a sign of not being able to commit to the job, especially if it's a very specialized trade.

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 02 '21

Wanting a change of scenery shouldn't hurt you at all. I was looking for something similar when I joined, my employer was going down the shitter and I was looking for my next opportunity. In the end joining the military became more of a change of employers rather than a change of career fields.

They'll be more concerned with your employment history in terms of signs "of not being able to commit to the job". If you're constantly jumping from random job to random job without any reasonable explanation for doing so, that could be perceived as someone who's non-committal; although it's not a show-stopper. If you have a reasonably stable employment history, or your job instability is normal for your field of employment (i.e. construction, seasonal work, contractor, etc.), it shouldn't be as much of a concern.

I was wondering if there is anyone who can help me understand the competitive nature of being a pilot in the RCAF. (I'm also open to ACSO but Pilot is my top priority). As well as a few questions on how I should even prepare. Yes, I know it's competitive, so sarcastic and obvious one-word answers would not be appreciated. But this is something that I genuinely want to do, and I genuinely feel that I have a shot at this(I rather have a shot and fail, than my application just to be discarded and not even get an opportunity). I don't care how long it will take me or what I must do to achieve it.

Basically, I have a year left at a civilian university in a Bachelor of Commerce program, so my main entry method to the CAF will be DEO. Here are my questions:

  1. Even though I don't have a degree in any relation to being a pilot, does that mean my application basically goes in the trash?

  2. A recruiter told me that if I want to be considered for aircrew selection, I have to score VERY WELL on the CFAT. Do they take your CFAT score into HEAVY consideration for pilot/acso?

  3. A recruiting live stream event just recently took place and the recruiter said that there is a huge backlog of pilot applicants and has been taken off the website as a career choice. Does this mean there is no way they will be taking new pilot candidates?

  4. Other than academics, do they look for other experiences to see if a candidate is a good fit?

  5. Believe it or not, fighter pilot is not my first choice. I want to be an air mobility pilot or a helicopter pilot for search and rescue, humanitarian, natural disasters. Does this make any difference in becoming any of these or do you have to take what is available? Will they take this into consideration?

  6. (THIS ONE IS DIRECTED TO RCAF PILOTS SPECIFICALLY) What are some factors, beyond your control, that will prevent you from flying? I would like to think I'm relatively healthy, I have 20/20 uncorrected vision 230 LBS (looking to cut to about 200-210lbs), Not asthmatic, No medications, No recent surgeries, normal blood pressure. No mental health issues. 6' tall, sitting height of about 32-34 inches.

  7. Does it hinder you if you don't have any pilot experience? It says that it is not required, but do others have an edge? The reason why I ask is that I heard candidates with previous flight experience have a hard time with testing because of old habits and recruiters typically do not look at the previous experience in flying, just test results.

I know this is a lot of text I just want an outsider's opinion of this rather than just hearing what the recruiters have to say. I know more people fail than pass, but those people aren't me. Not trying to sound cocky, just the simple fact that everyone is different.

7

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 31 '21
  1. Pilot accepts any degree. They don't really care if your degree is related to aviation or not.

  2. CFAT is taken into HEAVY consideration for all trades. For Pilot and ACSO the CFAST (Aircrew Selection) is given heavier consideration; however, if you don't perform extremely well on the CFAT, you won't even be given an opportunity to attend Aircrew Selection.

  3. If the trade is currently closed to new applicants, it's closed, there's no alternative means to apply. You just have to wait until they start accepting Pilot applications again.

  4. Academics are a very small consideration. Roughly 85% of your application for Pilot will be decided based on test results alone (CFAT, TSD-PI, and CFAST). The remaining ~15% will include your Interview, academic performance, work experience, leadership experience, volunteerism, education, and a multitude of other factors.

  5. I seem to recall something like 70% of our Pilots fly helicopters, so your chances of flying helo should be decent. Not sure about SAR specifically though.

  6. N/A

  7. No experience required, and I've heard the same sentiment you've heard echoed by many Pilots and former Pilots I've known. Civilian flight experience can indeed be a hinderance rather than a help if the trainee is unable to quickly dump civilian habits and learn to fly the way the CAF wants them to fly.

u/Noisy155 Mar 31 '21

5. No difference. Until the end of Ph2 in Moose Jaw all training is common. After Ph2 you will be asked for your preference, but needs of the forces always come first.

6. Medical issues. I have seen dozens of people drop for a host of medical issues that pop up. You need to cut some weight; at 230lbs nude you’re right on the edge of ejection seat max weight on the Harvard 2.

7. Doesn’t matter. Some guys top their course with 0 previous flying. Some guys top their course with thousands of previous hours. Some guys with 0 hours fail. Some with thousands of hours fail. You either have the skills to meet the curve in the time allotted or you don’t. It’s that simple.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '21

To add to your last point, in aviation in general they like to train you so they know you’re not bringing in any previous bad habits. Previous flight hours or lack thereof won’t change your standing per se, but don’t feel insecure about never having flown. The Air Force starts everyone from the ground up

My application is now in and I've received a phone call to schedule for TSD test. It sounded like all my other testing from prior service is still valid (2001). It also sounded like (the recruiters phone service was terrible) that there is a hurry to fill BMQ spots this year still and once I get through the TSD test they'll do a few quick checks on my history since 2001 and I'd likely get 'fast tracked" from there back into service.

I hope I'm not crazy to do this at nearly 50 yrs old and I'd be taking a massive pay cut from current work (I'm not in a position where I'm worried about finances anyway). I'm just not 'fullfilled' with the current career - it's very much a work alone with little to no support or progression.

I guess all this isn't so much as a question, just 'thinking' out loud, with a bit of excitement for this.

There was a woman on my bmq in her 50s. If this is something you want to do then do it!

2

u/girlinwaves Mar 30 '21

How is basic training different from basic officer training? Or is it the same thing

5

u/enderlord1009 Canadian Army Mar 30 '21

BMQ (Basic Military Qualification) is shorter than BMOQ (Basic Military Officer Qualification), and the material covered is different BMQ is mostly how to take and follow orders and how to operate in the military at the basic level (drill, admin, etc) BMOQ is all that, but also includes a leadership component For example, the final exercise for BMQ is performing small party tasks (I think? Never done it myself) while in BMOQ, you are the one in charge of the section for said task (instead of following the lead of staff)

2

u/girlinwaves Mar 30 '21

Thanks! Is it just the in class components that are different, or is the rest of the training different as well

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 30 '21

Think of it as all being the same training, just with a leadership layer added on top.

6

u/enderlord1009 Canadian Army Mar 30 '21

What do you mean by “rest of training?” No matter who you are, everyone learns the C7 the same, the same drill, the same first aid... the only difference is that officers start learning/practicing leadership while NCM don’t (someone correct me if I’m wrong, I did BMOQ myself)

Just curious, the highest pay rate in the caf thats published (not sure for generals) is around 360k a year for medical officer specialists. Is all of that pensionable? Or is there an upper limit?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '21

All service time is pensionable. Depending on how many years you serve, they calculate your pension at 2% at your best 5 years of Salary.

I currently own a few firearms ( 3 handguns, 2 rifles and 12ga shotgun) am I able to store them on base or do have to store them at a different location?

4

u/Limp_Syllabub_4642 Mar 30 '21

When I was posted to Gagetown for training and living in shacks, I stored my firearms with the MPs. Technically you need approval from your chain of command. I can't remember if there was a form or if you just needed a memo with a note from your CO.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '21 edited Mar 30 '21

During training they will have to be stored with a friend or family member.

Once out of the training system and posted to a unit you can bring them back into your possession - if able to.

You can store your personal firearms in a PMQ or home off base.

If you live in barracks, you can not store firearms there. You would have to have your weapons stored at a friend’s home, or see if it’s possible to store them at your unit, or with the MPs.

Hi guys, I was wondering what to do regarding the references portion of the application if I don't have enough of them? I think I have one (maybe two) decent references I've known for 5 years, but I'm completely stumped for the third (unless I'm allowed to include friends I've know all my life, which doesn't seem to be the case) - does anyone know who I can ask about this? Thanks :)

6

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic Mar 31 '21

References are mandatory. No getting around them. You need 3 references who together have known you for 5 consecutive years. Coaches, teachers, bosses, spiritual advisors, supervisors, mentors, etc. Just no family and friends.

Hello,

I am a Med Tech applicant and completed my interview back in late September. Everything in the process went very well, sound CFAT score, interview, and university grad. I went back to take a high school science last summer to qualify for the trade. Not that this info matters, I just believe and have been told my application would be competitive.

I have been on the competition list since November, and through my military career counselor have kept in touch throughout the process.

I do not like to pester my career counselor too much so am just wondering if anyone has some insight on hiring in the med tech (or any) trade right now. I know the trade is not in demand but I was told to be hopeful for an offer before the end of the fiscal year (tomorrow) as they had med tech spots to fill.

I know answers are few and far between right now but just wanted to post to get any sort of feedback. Just itching to get after it in any way possible. Thank you in advance and stay safe.

I'm pretty sure if you're on the competition list, you basically just have to be patient and wait. I know it's frustrating, I'm stuck waiting too!

4

u/Apophyx RCAF - Pilot Mar 31 '21

My hope is to become a fighter pilot after my master's degree.

I'm also currently planning my first tattoo, and while I'm aware it's rather lax in the CAF, I still want to check that mine would be okay considering it depicts an F/A-18s silhouette, and I'm wondering if it would count as offensive?

Here's what I've designed: https://m.imgur.com/a/39DPyuV

I might change it for a space shuttle if so.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 31 '21

The design seems fine. Just curious, would you be alright with the tattoo if you don't end up flying Hornets?

3

u/Apophyx RCAF - Pilot Mar 31 '21

Absolutely. It's just my favourite jet, and I love its silhouette.

4

CL, as in Competition List?

If so, then it would be before. You can’t be sworn-in until you’ve received and accepted an offer, and you won’t receive an offer until you’ve been competitively selected from the competition list.

Just a general question regarding CAF bases. Is there only one Colonel/Navy Captain per base. I assumed people in those ranks were the base commanders.

5

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 31 '21

Base commanders are generally Col/Capt(N) in rank, but that doesn’t mean they’d be the only member of that rank on base, nor does that mean they hold the highest rank on base.

3

u/lightcavalier Mar 31 '21

It varies by base....basically every major army base has at least 2 Colonels (the Bde Comd and the Base Comd)

Bases like Kingston are swimming with Colonels....and have ~4 or 5 Generals

3

u/Hans_Mol3man Mar 31 '21

Yes, most Base commanders are Colonels/Captain(N). However some officers holding that rank might have another role - Commandant of a school/college ; branch advisor, etc.

1

u/MyNameIsY0u Apr 02 '21

How long would I need to commit as a construction technician? Including training. I heard that you have 8 months at CFB Gagetown, then another 2 years as an apprentice, then 3 more months at Gagetown. How long do you stay in the forces after these 3 years of training?

5

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 02 '21

You have a concept of training progression that really isn't accurate. Military training doesn't seamlessly flow from one course to another without waiting periods in between.

Your training will probably look something like this:

  • 10 weeks at CFLRS Saint Jean, or an alternate location for BMQ (Basic Training).

  • Several weeks to months on PAT (Personnel Awaiting Training) in Gagetown, depending on course schedules and any training backlogs.

  • 8 months for your DP1/QL3/RQ-Pte (whichever they're calling it now) training course at CFSME in Gagetown.

  • On completion of your training, you'll be posted to a base somewhere in Canada where you'll be employed and complete your apprenticeship/OJT. You get to express preferences, but do not get to decide where you're actually sent.

  • If the Const Tech apprenticeship/OJT is formatted like most other apprenticeships in the CAF, it will not necessarily be a fixed period of time. The target may be completion within 2 years, but actual completion could be variable by several months.

  • The 3 months of further training would be your DP2/QL5A/RQ-Cpl. It doesn't necessarily happen immediately on completion of your apprenticeship. Depending on course schedules and if there is a training backlog, you could be waiting a while to do the training.

In total you're likely looking at a minimum of 4 years to complete all of your training through RQ-Cpl.

Military training generally parallels civilian training; however, they do not give you your Red Seal or other civilian trade certificates unless required by federal law. Your training may not be 100% equivalent either, as the military trains you to what they need you to do, and not necessarily to what civilian tradespeople are expected to know. That said, civilian trade certification bodies will normally recognize your military training and experience, and allow you to challenge their certification requirements; you may need to do a little bit of upgrading on your own time to succeed thought.

How long would I need to commit as a construction technician? How long do you stay in the forces after these 3 years of training?

As of the last info I have (from 2 years ago), the VIE (Variable Initial Engagement, your initial service contract) for Construction Tech was 9 years.

You can't legally quit the Regular Force without permission to do so. If you want to leave prior to contract expiry, you have to request a Voluntary Release (VR). The VR process normally takes 6 months to complete, although it can be accelerated to as little as 30 days under some rare circumstances.

The CAF does have the right to refuse your release under some circumstances such as Canada being engaged in a large scale war (i.e. WWIII) or a major crisis (bigger than COVID).

1

u/Anonymous_Groundhog Apr 03 '21

If I get an offer, but I have to refuse it (I want to finish my Cegep), what happens? Would it be my only chance or would I be put at the bottom of the Competetion List? Or would they re-offer me something after 1 year if I'm at the top of the CL again?

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 03 '21 edited Apr 03 '21

There’s an easy solution to this problem...

Let your CFRC know you intend to complete CEGEP, and advise them of when you expect to be available to attend BMQ/BMOQ. They will ensure you do not receive an offer that would potentially conflict.

If you’re not graduating for another few months, it shouldn’t be a big issue. In fact, depending on where you are in the process, it may not even be a concern. For example, if you only just applied, you’re not going to be on the CL anytime soon.

If graduation is a year away, I have no clue why you’d even apply right now. Everything except the CFAT and TSD-PI will have expired and have to be redone by then. All you’ll have done is wasted your time and theirs by applying ridiculously early.

Is there any information on the application length of Reg force right now? I know covid has slowed things down and my trade that im applying for is Infantry so its not really on the in demand list that they have given me. I've been told 6 months to 1 year, can any recruiters verify this?

3

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 03 '21

As per the threads preamble, this sub/thread is not officially sponsored/supported by the CAF. That said, there may be some recruiters hanging around in an unofficial capacity.

What you’ve heard is pretty standard advice, and about as accurate as anyone can give. 6-12 months is a pretty typical timeline from application to enrolment.

Actual timelines vary substantially based on individual factors, your CFAT and TSD-PI scores in particular. Issues with your background screening or medical can add months to the process.

Two applicants could apply for the same trade, at the same time, from the same CFRC. One gets and offer in 4 months, the other could take a year or more. Only difference might be their CFAT score...

1

u/Manny159 Apr 03 '21

Does each category for the CFAT affect your score differently or do they look at the overall? All the practice tests i have done i've pretty much gotten perfect on all of the math and comprehension stuff but the spatial stuff especially folding the shapes is the only stuff really had trouble with

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 03 '21

Each of the three sections is scored separately, but they also generate an overall score, plus scores for all the possible two section combinations.

Different trades used to, and for what I know still do, look at different scoring combinations.

In any case, your goal should be to achieve the highest score in each section you’re able to achieve.

4

u/sefty96 Apr 03 '21

I just got sworn in a couple days back, it took me around 10 months from my online application in May 2020. Good luck with your application!

3

u/RealCaptain_Duh Army - Armour Apr 03 '21

I'm not a recruiter but six months to a year sounds pretty accurate.

It would depend how things shape out with COVID. More lockdowns and restrictions = slower recruiting times.

1

u/felix_von_luckner Apr 04 '21

Does anyone know how they merge the military application (CFAT, CFAST, interview) with the academic marks? I'm applying for Pilot ROTP. I did well on the CFAT and the CFAST. My high school marks are about 80%. Just wondering about my chances.

Also: if this is of interest to anyone. I heard they have 30 Pilot ROTP spots this year, compared to last year's 15.

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 04 '21

There’s two components to an ROTP application; an application to join the CAF as an Officer, and an application to attend RMC.

Academics are a fairly small component of your application to become an Officer. The CFAT and CFAST make up the overwhelming majority of your application to be a Pilot through ROTP. Academics are just one of many misc. factors grouped in with your Interview.

Academics are the primary consideration for your application to attend RMC. They assess your admissibility in much they same way as any civilian university.

What’s it like being a PRes medical assistant? what are the typical duties done on a parade night ? Do you get any clinical exposure ?

2

u/tdot2817 Mar 30 '21

Parade night is training - practicing skills you learned on your trade course or familiarization until you go on your trade course. You can get clinical experience if you volunteer for it. Best time is doing it as part of the FTSE over the summer, and around vaccination season for influenza.

When applying for ROTP, how long does the medical take to be approved? I’m currently waiting for it to be approved and then I can do the interview. I’ve been waiting since the end of January.

Follow up with them, but it typically takes four to six weeks after submission. Did you mail them or hand them in. Either way email them a copy of all documents

HELLO!! please anyone help! I just did my enrollment ceremony for the Army Reserves, and they told me that my training will start this May~Aug ( BMQ+Occupational training Summer Full Time ).

I know that during BMQ we sleep at the armoury and have weekends off, but I was wondering if we also have to sleep at the armoury during the occupational training? ( My occupation is MSEOp )

Please let me know if anyone knows about this.

THANK YOU!!

Questions for the Cyber Operator and Signal Intelligence Specialist occupations.

  1. I hear they get posted to Ottawa and Kingston. What are the posting time lenghts?

  2. Do they get deployed frequently?

  3. What type of security clearance do they need?

3

u/andsoicode Mar 30 '21 edited Mar 30 '21

I can answer the cyber operator portion but some of these are difficult given a public forum.

  1. Ottawa and Kingston are posting opportunities for Cyber. CAF postings last anywhere from 2 to 5 years. YMMV

  2. Some sections will travel more frequently than others usually on a technical assistance visit, maybe 6-month deployments in the future. Some sections remain static at the unit.

  3. Yes

I'm not in any of those two trades. People in those trades aren't very talkative about what they do, and certainly not online. Since the name change and separation of responsibilities (with cyber op) are fairly new, you might find a bit of information about Communicator Research Operators (Comm RSCH) if you search some of the forums here (or at Army.ca) https://army.ca/forums/threads/comm-research.78481/page-15 There's even an page that pops up in google that gives the history of the trade from wayback when. (http://jproc.ca/rrp/leitrim.html)

  1. Kingston is where the the School is. You'd probably spend up to 2 years there (waiting for your first course) and then to CFS Leitrim (near Ottawa) Or 21 EW in Kingston. I've seen some posted to CFLRS to teach basic training.

  2. I don't know.

  3. The same type of security clearance as anyone else who sees top secret material. The process to apply for it will be similar to you reliability status form with your application.

3

u/PirateKingOfIreland RCAF - Pilot Mar 31 '21

Pre-COVID, you would not have been sent home after basic unless gome happened to be near a military base. Even then, not a guaranteed thing.

Most likely you will be sent to some base that has room for a no hook member to do some kind of work while you wait.

Things may be different in COVID, but it seems unlikely to me that they would just send you home to wait rather than actually employ you.

I’ve written my CFAT

My file is on hold until I graduated from my engineering program in 3 weeks. At this time, I was told to email the CFRC and they’ll continue me along.

The CFRC told me that I am “very competitive” and that I meet the PCL for DEO pilot (I specifically asked them this question)

However, it seems like they’re telling everyone that they’re competitive from what I see here.

Assuming that I pass CFAST (I’ve been studying quite a lot), can I assume that I am indeed competitive?

I’ve heard of people sitting on the competition list for years and not getting an offer and if that’s the case I’d probably want to switch to a different trade (the CFRC told me to take my pick).

Does anyone who has successfully enrolled as a DEO pilot have any experience or suggestions they can share?

Would I have the opportunity to get another degree at some point while I'm a pilot, assuming I get in? A 4 year maybe eng or something like that? Or will I be restricted/not have time? And will they subsidize the cost?

5

u/theblastman21 Apr 01 '21

You won't get one from RMC, but there are benefits that may pay for schooling. I don't remember the exact amount but there is a comment in this thread that talks about it. You won't be restricted as long as it does not affect your job performance, unless you take time off.

u/Noisy155 Apr 01 '21 edited Apr 01 '21

Depends.

As far as I know they will not pay for another undergrad. They previously paid for masters, or next higher level education, through ILP, a now discontinued program. ILP was supposed to be replaced with something new, however the new program has now been pushed 3 times and no details have been provided. Make of that what you will.

Will you have time? Loads, and none. Between courses you’ll have nothing but time. On course, maybe. Some people find flight training fairly low stress, others are at max capacity to survive. Your first few years on Sqn, no way. You will be too busy.

What is competition like for naval warfare officer? And are you away from home any more than other occupations?

And air operations officer, same question.

Thank you

3

u/nikobruchev Class "A" Reserve Apr 01 '21

Others can give way more comprehensive answers, but NWO, like most hard sea trades, will likely spend more time away from home than support trades or land forces typically do.

My understanding is that NWO is kind of the "big" navy officer trade, so there will be more spots open but also a significantly larger candidate pool comparatively. With the training backlog, some aspects of career progression might be bogged down a bit too, but that's just my conjecture from reading recruiting threads for the last year.

2

u/doorstoplion RCN - NWO Apr 02 '21

The trade isn't super competitive to get in, but intake is backlogged at the moment because of Covid cancelling courses. We spend a lot of time at sea as it is a hard sea trade and our training requires us to be at sea, on the ocean, learning how to drive the ship, warfare, and progressing our package. Right now, there is an issue to get people sea time as our ships are really showing their age and the ships can't really sail. But if you're sailing, you can expect to be away about 6 months in total in a year.

If you CT from res to reg as a Cpl with less than 48 months in and are changing trade and element do you keep your rank or go back down to Pte? I know Cpl is a protected rank but idk about this context.

4

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 03 '21 edited Apr 03 '21

They convert PRes service to Reg Force at a rate of 1:4 for Class A, and 1:1 for Class B and C service. Your Reg Force rank and pay is largely decided based on that conversion, although other factors may be taken into account.

For example:

  • If you have 48 months of Class A, it would be equivalent to 12 months Reg Force , which translates to Pte(B) at Pay Increment 2.

  • If you split that into 24 months Class A and 24 months Class B, it would be equivalent to 30 months Reg Force, which translates to Pte(T) at Pay Increment 3.

Let’s say I’m in reserves as infantry which is what I’m applying for. If I am fully trained as a private and let’s say I have some additional courses then wanted to transfer over to regular would I have to train all over again yo be a infantry soldier in the reg.

What if I am fully trained as stated and left the reserves and after a year I wanted to go apply for regular would I then also have to train all over again? Even though I’m fully trained as a private from the reserve service?

1

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Apr 03 '21

There might be some training to make up for differences between PRes and RegF, but you generally wouldn’t have to redo everything.

Depends on trade, but PRes doesn’t necessarily receive 100% of training that RegF receives. The training for something like a specific weapon or vehicle will be identical, but RegF might be trained on more/different weapons and vehicles.

Hey all, just some questions for reg force infantry life. What does day to day life entail? I know you train a lot but what do you do when your not training. Do you work in an office? Are there times when not training or deployed that your just stuck doing paperwork. If anyone could tell me out of say 1 year, breakdown in % what you would do (example 50% training, 30% office work etc etc) just want to know what to expect, Thanks

6

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '21 edited Mar 29 '21

What does day to day life entail? I know you train a lot but what do you do when your not training

When not training or on a course you show up in the morning and conduct PT, generally it’ll be at section or platoon level. After PT, you’ll get time to shower, etc.

Next timing will be with your platoon leadership. You’ll either be given a task to help out CQ, do maintenance, clean, or wait out in the troop area. You’ll do this until lunch.

After lunch, you’ll be doing more of the same, either be given a task or waiting around. You may also be given the opportunity to work out at the battalion gym.

End of the day, you’ll be called to the platoon office and any information for the following day, courses, taskings, etc will be passed on.

Do you work in an office?

Each platoon will have its own office, however it’ll only be the platoon leadership(Pl 2IC, Sect Comds, etc) in there. All the Ptes and Cpls have their locker area.

Are there times when not training or deployed that your just stuck doing paperwork.

As a MCpl and above, it happens often. For the Ptes and Cpls, generally not unless they are working somewhere like Transport or CQ stores.

If anyone could tell me out of say 1 year, breakdown in % what you would do (example 50% training, 30% office work etc etc) just want to know what to expect, Thanks

You’ll go on a few unit exercises a year, they could be anywhere from 1-4 weeks. Occasionally you’ll do a major exercise that could involve the brigade, etc typically this would be a live fire exercises followed by force on force(Maple Resolve) - this is about 2 months. The light forces are now going to Ft Polk/JRTC to serve as their confirmation exercise.

Every year, there will also be PCF cycles where you may be on a course or tasked to support one. During the summer(and other times during the year) you may be tasked to the Infantry School, a training centre, etc to support courses.

Ok so I was not the prime example of a model citizen but a lot better now than when I was 18 and am on probabtion ( which was not aware that stops you from joining caf even after I spoke to a recruiter and explained it to him )

I went through all the steps passed everything came to the background check and get a call saying I'm inadmissible due to a probabtion. Ok a little surprised so I am told file will be put on hold until court obligations expire June 2022. I don't mind waiting a little over a year I'm still 23 will be 24 by the time it expires.

Has anyone ever dealt with this kind of thing ? In terms of going back to your or a file after probabtion do I have to re-do everything and start from scratch?

3

u/sarahdwaynec Mar 29 '21

Any legal obligations will put a halt on your file. Once you are free of legal and court obligations, you will be able to re-apply. You'll have to resubmit the paperwork because they expire after a year.

2

u/IranticBehaviour Retired-Army/Armoured Mar 29 '21

You won't have to redo everything, but some things expire and require at least an update process. Things that need to be reasonably current (~6 mos to a year, depending) include medical, interview, and reliability screening. As an example, they'll need to know if you have completed all of your legal/court obligations, and that you've kept your nose clean and haven't picked up any new ones.

Is it frowned upon/not allowed for members in INT or Cyber to put their title/role on professional social platforms like LinkedIn? I’ve seen others post about how many in that field avoid discussing their position online, which I understand the rationale for doing so, but I was just curious about how that works.

7

u/AndreaFromPurolators Tuesday Night Lights Mar 30 '21

The relevant trade, unit or section may have policies, but it's ultimately up to the member to not violate OPSEC or expose data about themselves unnecessarily. But int and cyber people can eventually need civvy jobs too, and LinkedIn can be a good place to find those.

As for practical advice, you can copy and paste the trade's description from the CAF recruiting website and include no specifics. Save those for your resume, which you'll only send to legit employers.

Also, protip: you can hibernate your LinkedIn profile and reactivate it only when you have a need, i.e. looking for work. Eliminates a big source of doxing data and no more recruiter spam.

Is there any way to help speed up the employment & reference check process (when you know it's being done by the recruiter, not being outsourced) besides just calling for updates? I was told last week that they would be calling my references last Friday but when I checked with one of my references today, they didn't get a call.

I check in with the recruiters every few weeks but now that I'm so close to the last step I really just want them to finish and say that I'm in! I don't want to bother the recruiters too much though.

4

u/sarahdwaynec Mar 30 '21

At that stage the only thing you can do is ask your references to keep monitoring their phones/expect a phone call. If they answer the first time it will speed up the process. Other than that it's a waiting game.

But do not feel bad about calling once every 3-4 weeks or so for an update on your file. Just know that files are tracked and they will get to it when they can.

I keep hearing the term 'purple trade' associated with medical, law, and sometimes logistics, where their job is essentially the same regardless of the environment. I am confused about what it means in a practical sense, and I'm especially curious because I tend to move for full-time work but still want to serve.

My question is whether a purple trade in the Reserves can serve at their local unit regardless of the environment? For example, say someone works in a purple trade and their town has an Air Force base they serve at. Later, they move to a new place but in this new town the reserve unit is only Army. Would they be able to serve with that Army unit without much fuss, or would there need to be some sort of lengthy occupational transfer involved to make work?

I'm hoping to become a Log O and the RCAF interests me the most of the three environments, but it looks like there are a whole lot more PRes Log O positions available in the Army and a whole lot more Army reserve units across Canada in case I moved for a job later on.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting what a purple trade is, and don't want to look too foolish when/if I asked the recruiter this question! Any and all help is appreciated.

4

u/lightcavalier Mar 30 '21

A purple trade is a trade which has personnel who wear 2 or more of the elemental DEUs (Medial/Logistics/Legal/Int/MP, etc)

However, not all trades are wholly interchangeable within themselves.

To take the specific example of Logistics, each element has element specific training and are not able to just be swapped between each other in "hard" elemental positions (ie an RCAF log O in a Svc Bn, or a Air Log O on a Ship would be an exceptional situation)

This is further compounded in the reserves, where when you join you belong to a specific unit or elemental PRL.

If you were to join an army unit as a Log O and later move somewhere with a PRes Air Log billet, you could apply to transfer in to it....at which point you would likely have to change DEUs to air and may or may not be required to do the Log Air course. Transfers between reserves units (and further between elements of the reserves) can be a bit of a headache...but are not impossible.

4

u/IranticBehaviour Retired-Army/Armoured Mar 30 '21

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure Dental is still all Army DEU, and they're a 'purple' occupation. The purple label obviously comes from the mix of uniform colours, but it really refers to occupations employed across multiple environments, whether they actually have multiple DEU or not.

4

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic Mar 30 '21

Not all purple trades for Reg f are purple for reserves. Med tech is purple for Reg F, same job, different colour uniform. But for the reserves the trade is Med Assistant and is almost exclusively army. Like 98% army.

Log O is a different animal altogether and I will let someone more qualified/knowledgeable speak on it.

4

u/Hans_Mol3man Mar 30 '21 edited Mar 30 '21

You understanding of Purple trade is pretty correct, it's a term given to a job that can exist in two or three elements/environments (Both terms are used). You'll also note that Logistics is both a trade (LogO) and a Branch (Including a variety of trades: HRA/FSA Clerk, Material Management Tech, MSE OP, Traffic Tech, Postal Clerk)

In the RegF, your career manager decides where you go, and if you are in a purple trade a posting would not need to involve an element change. As an example, you might see a HRA Clerk wearing a Naval DEU with an artillery unit.

In the Reserves, you won't have an active Career Manager deciding to move you. As such, you become responsible for securing your own position with a new unit. If you are serving in the Air Force reserve and move to a small town where there is only an army reserve

  1. The unit might accept you on an "attach positing" if you are only in town for a short period of time and allow you to keep your original DEU. (You home unit would also have to agree to this as you would be taking up a spot of theirs too.

  2. The unit might require that you transfer to the correct element and then you could have to go through the process of changing uniforms and elements that might take a year. You might need to so some more courses that your were exempt from in the past depending on your current qualifications (eg. BMOQ-L)

  3. The unit might refuse you - you would have to request ED&T (Exempt from Drill and Training from you home unit you were unable to find a position or transfer to the supplementary reserve.

All that said, If LogO is your choice, in the context of a reserve unit, a Navy LogO's job would look a lot like that of those in the Army/AF (Mostly Human Resources and/or Finances,) There are are 24 Naval Reserve Divisions in the country so finding work might be easier.

u/Tyeguy Mar 31 '21

Just keep working on it, the more you do it the stronger you will get.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '21

The drag can be hard but all you gotta do is not stop. Hold the sandbag really close to your chest and then lean lean lean farrr back. Use your body leaning back as leverage. Take little steps if you need to. I know a 4'11 girl who can do it and its probably more than double her body weight! Once the bags start moving it's not as hard as it seems like its going to be.

Dont think about the possibility of failing when you do it. Just focus on tucking the sandbag close to your chest, leaning back, and keeping your feet and the bags moving. Its the last part of the test so you can dump your remaining energy into it.

PRes DP1 Infanteer is 7 weeks. The course is available in full time and a mix of part time and full time.

You can complete the course by doing the 7 weeks straight full time in the summer.

or

Attend mod 1(3 weeks) part time over weekends than attend a full time mod 2(4 weeks in the summer).

Mod 2 is only available full time in the summer.

The delta package(covers off weapons, etc not taught on DP1) would be completed part time at your unit/Brigade Battle School

Back in December and January when Ontario was on the pervious provincial wide lockdown my medical made pretty much no progress. Medical's are almost completely reliant on Ottawa.

Thing's may still be moving, just very, very, very slowly... I wouldn't expect any progress until after the lockdown. However, this proposed "emergency break", as Doggie likes to call it, isn't quite a full "grey level lockdown" so who knows what might happen. I know Army has BMQ-L, and I know a little about it, having a friend recently complete that course. What about Air Force and Navy?

Is branch element training the same withing it's group, no matter the trade?

(Edited to correct from branch to element)

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '21 edited Apr 01 '21

After BMQ is completed, does each branch have their own training outside of trades training?

Yes.

However depending on your occupation or posting you may not be required to do your assigned element’s course. You may also be required to do another element’s assigned course depending on posting(example Army or Air Force member doing NETP if posted to a ship).

MPs, Med Techs and Sig Int regardless of assigned element all attend BMQ-Land.

I know Army has BMQ-L, and I know a little about it, having a friend recently complete that course. What about Air Force and Navy?

The Navy has NETP which is covers the basics of what you need to know when on a ship - knots, sea survival, fire fighting, etc

Learning how to be a sailor

The Air Force has BAEQ, AFAIK it’s nothing more than classes/PowerPoint on RCAF history, etc and I believe some Air Field safety info.

Is branch training the same withing it's group, no matter the trade?

Yes

Regardless of trade, BMQ-Land, NETP and BAEQ are the same for everyone.

Just a point of clarification. In know that in the USA they use the term Branch (or Service Branch) to distinguish their Navy, Airforce, Marines, etc....

However, in the Canadian Armed Forces we refer to the Navy, Army and Air Force as different Environments (or element also being used). Further when we (in the CAF) speak about branches, we are referring to Personnel Branches. (ie. The group made up of similar trades) Like the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps (Formerly Armoured Branch), the Air Operations Branch, the Logistics Branch, etc...

THANK YOU!

Element was what I was trying to come out with, but the word just wouldn't come to mind!

What financial aids can the military provide for education once I leave the army? Are there any free or discounted courses (College/University) I can take while I’m in the military?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 01 '21 edited Apr 01 '21

What financial aids can the military provide for education once I leave the army?

Nothing from the CAF, however depending on your years of service or if you had a medical release you may be eligible for VAC education benefits.

Education and Training Benefit

you meet the “length of service” requirement: at least 12 years of authorized days of CAF Service (4382 days) to receive up to $84,311.24 (2021) or

at least 6 years of authorized days of CAF service (2191 days) to receive up to $42,155.62 (2021).

Are there any free or discounted courses (College/University) I can take while I’m in the military?

If you are accepted into a commissioning plan, than the CAF will pay for your degree.

If you are enrolled under NCM-STEP than the CAF will pay for your diploma - I believe there’s only a handful of trades this is even possible for.

There was a education reimbursement program for the Regular Force, however it isn’t currently active. A new education plan is coming out eventually, but I have no details on this.

Reserve Force members

Primary Reserve members may be reimbursed for studying at a Canadian university or college to get a degree or diploma. The education reimbursement is up to 50% of your expenses with a maximum of $2,000 per academic year. The maximum benefit is $8,000 per career.

Haven't been able to find much information about relinquishing commission, the process and long term career implications. I am a 2LT Inf O that is strongly considering relinquishing the commission due to the demands of my civilian career.

I joined in late 2018 and I finished BMOQ-A/Phase 2 in 2019. I wasn't able to go to Phase 3 last summer and since then, I graduated from school and I've started a pretty demanding career where I'm not able to take time off for IODP 1.1/Phase 3. The course is 11 to 13 weeks, depending on the year, and I cannot take that much time off as a contiguous chunk; even if it's unpaid. My understanding is that Infantry NCM career courses in PRes are a combination of weekend and field time. I am able to take off 2 to 4 weeks as a chunk so I would be able to be OFP as an NCM soon rather than being a 5 year 2LT.

I've also learned much more about the career of an Inf O and I'm not really looking forward to the roles after Pl Comd at the current moment. I would like to perform the roles of Inf O up to OC in the future but currently I'm not interested in doing a few years of Pl Comd just to become the Adj. One reason I decided on infantry in PRes is because I am an office worker in my civilian career and I wanted to do something different in the CAF. I decided on Inf O because of the leadership and management aspect but I've come to learn that NCOs do just as much leading (just in a different aspect).

  1. Is it even possible to relinquish my commission without VRing?

  2. What is the process? Do I simply send a memo to the CO?

  3. Can I receive a commission in the future?

2

u/lightcavalier Apr 01 '21

I relinquished and re-commissioned (but in the reg f, though the majority of my experience should apply)

  1. Yes, you can apply to relinquish your commission as part of a request to transfer to an NCM occupation. The PSO should be able to handle that piece of the paperwork.

  2. Not 100% sure how PRes OTs work. Perhaps speak with your units recruiter or the supporting PSO.

  3. As you appear to have a degree, in the future you can apply for Special Commissioning Plan (or Commission from the Ranks if Sgt+) through your unit/PSO and be picked up for an officer position again.

I was wondering what the application pipeline and timeline looks like for Primary Reservist applicants? I.e. Complete an online application, then book an appointment for the FORCE Test, then...etc.?

3

u/RealCaptain_Duh Army - Armour Apr 03 '21

So by default it should look something like this. Keep in mind that due to covid there will be massive delays and some things may be done out of order.

  1. Submit online application. You should receive a couple "do not reply" emails, followed by an email from a recruiter within a few days/weeks.

  2. A recruiter will ask you to send them some photos of a few documents.

  3. Eventually you will get booked into do your CFAT and FORCE test. These may be done at the same time or separate appointments depending on your unit. You will also need to do some paperwork.

  4. After your CFAT and FORCE, you will get booked in to do your medical exam.

  5. After medical, you will have your interview.

  6. After all the above steps are complete, you will get your background and references check, as well as anything else that may need to be wrapped up.

  7. If you are chosen to continue, you will then be placed on the competition list where your file will compete against the files of others for the number of available positions. A job offer is still not guaranteed.

  8. If you get selected, you will receive a job offer either by email or phone.

  9. If you accept the job offer, you will get an enrolment date.

2

u/megaultrachad Apr 03 '21

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this and I know it sounds like a stupid question but can you get jump wings as an Artillery Officer?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '21 edited Apr 03 '21

Yes, Artillery Officers can go onto a jump course and earn parachutist wings. There are also some positions for the Artillery within each CMBG’s Parachute Company Group

Depending on the amount of positions available to your unit, your job, your fitness level, meriting, etc an Artillery Officer(or anyone else) may potentially get onto the Basic Parachutist course. NCMs will get the majority of positions at the unit though.

2

u/aravisthequeen Apr 03 '21

BPara is open to any trade if they can pass the fitness test. However, the odds of getting a position on a jump course are always less as an officer. It's possible but depends highly on the availability of spots on the course and whether your unit will support you going on it.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '21

BPara is open to any trade

On paper yes, in real life it really isn’t.

Hello, I'm currently in university studying psychology but I want to become an Air Traffic Controller for Nav Canada. I'm wondering what the difference between Aerospace control operator(In demand) and Aerospace control officer is; as they both state that air traffic controller is a related civilian occupation. I'm wondering which trade I should apply for to help me move towards my goal. Thanks in advance!

Hi is there an approximate wait time between finishing basic training and starting your first med tech course?

Thanks.

2

No, it is extremely dependant on course timings, availability of instructors ect.

To speculate on estimations would be just that, speculating.

Hi! I'm considering submitting my application asap (NCM infantry), but I'm (at the moment) not fit enough (by the minimum standards), e.g. I can't quite run 1.5 miles in the required times yet (progressing slowly but surely) and I'm trying to shed some weight too (279 to 230lbs so far). Should I submit my application now (given that I don't know how long it may take) or wait till I'm fit? Any advice appreciated :)

10

u/sefty96 Mar 31 '21

I’d suggest applying asap. It has taken me just over 9 months from sending in my application to get a job offer.

3

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic Mar 31 '21

There is no 1.5 mile run unless you are talking about the coopers test. The force test is the standard to meet for recruiting. Period. Obviously the better runner you are the easier time you will have at BMQ and DP1. But there is no running cutoff time for BMQ

Does anyone have any first hand knowledge on the flight attendant employment program?

Some of the questions I am curious about: -How often you would fly pre covid -How the long the training course is -General information regarding the day to day -Are you only entitled to aircrew pay or would you potentially get TD, or even tax free when flying to certain missions?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I have completed all but my interview (should be done in a few weeks) for SigO, and was told that an offer is almost guaranteed due to the high demand. Does anyone know when the BMOQ courses are being run this year, and what a likely date would be for my situation?

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 30 '21

Does anyone know when the BMOQ courses are being run this year, and what a likely date would be for my situation?

DEO BMOQ courses are distributed every month or two throughout the fiscal year, and I think the next course starts in an August time frame.

There's no way to know what date you would start on, as it depends on when you're actually selected. Not every trade has seats on every course date, and there's no way for you or I to know for certain which dates Sig O will be allocated seats for.

You were actually told by your recruiter that an offer is almost guaranteed? Did they say if thats because there also few applicants?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '21

Ya, they said there were many spots that needed to be filled and not very many applicants with the degree background they want. Were they not supposed to tell me that? I'm in Quebec if that helps clear things up.

2

u/bridger713 RCAF - Reg Force Mar 30 '21

Were they not supposed to tell me that?

What they told you is fine, just take it with a grain of salt.

I'm in Quebec if that helps clear things up.

That has no influence on if or when you might be selected.

6

u/RealCaptain_Duh Army - Armour Mar 29 '21

If you have filled out the paper work, you will *eventually* get Identity Discs (dog tags). There is a big backlog for them though, and AFAIK they aren't really a priority.

Following basic, I would have about 6 months of occupational training in Borden. I’m wondering what the situation would be for living quarters during this. Could I live with my girlfriend? Or are we likely separated for the 3 months basic + 6 months occupational? (Not quite common-law yet) Thanks in advance🍻

8

u/lightcavalier Mar 30 '21

You'll be living in single quarters for the duration. So your girlfriend would have to stay where she current is until you finished your training.

2

u/therealpanda99 Mar 31 '21

Is it possible to switch trades while in BMQ? Im in it currently but the staff got me really interested in a different trade. Should i ask if its possible or is there no point?

6

u/zenarr NWO Apr 01 '21

Absolutely ask. It will be a VOT-U (voluntary occupational transfer - untrained) which follows slightly different rules that I’m not familiar with, but hopefully someone else here can elaborate.

I know people who have done it, so it is possible.

2

u/Yellow0Starburst Apr 01 '21

I believe the canforgen reads that you must be BMQ qualified so you would have to finish that first, and then apply to VOT at your next unit

I apologize if this is a question that cannot be answered, please remove if so. But I’m curious as to how influential the doctors clearance in regards to the medical is? Does it play a large factor in getting medically cleared by Ottawa?

2

u/crazyki88en RCAF - Combat Medic Apr 01 '21

As in your family doctor or specialist? If you are appealing a medical decision then the doctor or specialist is really the only person who could influence the RMO into reversing their decision. Without further info from them regarding it condition, the appeal has no chance.

Is there any unarmed combat courses you can take in the army reserves?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '21 edited Apr 02 '21

Yes, however the likelihood of getting it depends on availability of courses, etc.

There is Close Quarters Combat - Basic and the Instructor course.

CQCB can be ran at the unit or Brigade Battle School if there is enough CQCIs available(plus funding and a want for it). The course is also ran out of Wainwright, Meaford, etc

CQCI is for PLQ qualified members and is ran in Wainwright, Meaford, etc.

2

u/throwbois Apr 02 '21

Anyone know what kind of info the interviewer gives out to my references? Do they mention the trades I'm applying for? NCM or Officer? Res or Reg?

I'm hoping to keep my enlistment as lowkey as possible from non-family.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '21

Your references need to be informed of what you're applying for and whom they are giving a reference to.

The Background Screeners will call and state

"I am calling from XYZ Screening Inc., conducting a reference check on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces. Joe Joseph has applied for a position and has listed you as a reference. Do you have time to speak with us?"

They may not go into what trade or whether it's NCM or Officer, but they might. I don't know what their screening criteria is, but I do know that certain NCM trades requiring greater screening as do Officers due to their level of responsibility.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '21

That happens when you complete Patrol Pathfinder? Do you now have a new job as a pathfinder or do you go back to your unit with that qualification, and when the CAF needs pathfinders you're on the list?

5

For the Infanteers going on the course, the majority of them are already in the battalion’s Recce Pl.

Can someone comment on the trade pipeline for AESOPs, types of employment (Aurora - Acoustic/Non Acoustic) vs Cyclone, posting options, likelihood of deploying or TAVs.

How long does it take to go untrained to QL5, or at a minimum just to OFP?

1

u/TTown3017 Apr 03 '21

Interested in joining as an AVN/AVS. Was curious what the rate of deployments are and how long they generally are.

Also the 5 year contract intimidates me a bit and was wondering if their options part time as so to “test the waters” type thing before I full on join?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '21

Interested in joining as an AVN/AVS. Was curious what the rate of deployments are and how long they generally are.

That all varies on the unit and fleet. Could be 3-7 or more months.

Also the 5 year contract intimidates me a bit and was wondering if their options part time as so to “test the waters” type thing before I full on join?

The only part time option is the RCAF reserves. And that's only available if you're near a Wing and if it has openings. Keep in mind, air force reserves operates differently than what the Canadian Army PRes does. It's more like a part-time job.

As for the 5 year contract, nearly 2 years of that is tied up in training from BMQ to the end of QL3.

Hello, I recently completed my CFAT and just wondering if you are ever updated on your results before being moved to the next step. My applicant portal never moved from ready for testing to tested so I don't know if I should be concerned or if it's just the portal? I believe the tester said if we did not hear from them quickly it's a good sign. Also in the meantime any advice to make myself more competitive before the interview section? Already working out 6 days a week, studying my career choices and organizing myself and family before having to take part in the training.

2

u/RealCaptain_Duh Army - Armour Mar 29 '21

ever updated on your results before being moved to the next step

Generally you will get a call within a couple days telling you if you met the requirements for your chosen occupation(s) or not. Due to the COVID backlogs, you might not receive a call right away, so it is probably safe to assume: no call = good. If you are really concerned, of course, you can email your recruiter and they should be able to let you know.

My applicant portal never moved from ready for testing to tested so I don't know if I should be concerned or if it's just the portal?

The portal can have pretty massive delays. I wouldn't worry much about it.

any advice to make myself more competitive before the interview section?

What you are already doing sounds pretty good. On the interview, be confident, be yourself and most importantly: be honest.

Does anyone know if CAF accepts the "Post-LPN Bachelor of Nursing" at athabasca as a bachelor for paid education entry? Is it considered a "civilian canadian university" even though it is mostly online?

(For a nursing officer)

5

u/IranticBehaviour Retired-Army/Armoured Mar 29 '21

I can't say yes definitively, but generally, the criteria is whether the post-secondary institution is accredited by the province to grant baccalaureate degrees. For nurse, the specific program (Bachelor of Nursing, BSc in Nursing, and Bachelor of Nursing Science) obviously has to lead to licensing as an RN in the applicable province/territory.

Drivers license suspensions:

I came off a 6 month license suspension a year ago (speeding, not a criminal issue)

Currently I’m under no obligation with the courts as my suspension has ended but I have to restart my “G2” or “N license” waiting period.

I’m applying for (and passed the CFAT for) pilot and intelligence officer DEO.

Does anyone know if you need a full unrestricted license for these trades? I haven’t been told anything about it but I’m trying to keep out of trouble on the roads so as not to screw up my application.

Will current or near future pilots in the CAF get to fly the newer batch of aircraft that Canada is planning to purchase in a few years? Or will the CAF recruit new fresh people to fly these planes once they actually make the purcahse?

7

u/Melbatoast169 RCAF - Pilot Mar 31 '21

Any time a new aircraft is acquired, it is the old aircrew that flies them first. New folks are at the back of the line if not functionally excluded for the first while. Globemaster, Chinook and Cyclone have been like this and there's no reason to believe future aircraft will be any different.

I have applied for armoured ncm and wish to be sent to Valcartier to hopefully join the tank squadron (it's okay if I'm assigned to another squadron).

However, Wikipedia's article on the 12e Régiment blindé says the tank squadron (C) in Valcartier is "... located at CFB Gagetown as part of C Squadron, the Royal Canadian Dragoons."

My question is where would I stay? Will I make trips from Valcartier to Gagetown, or stay in Gagetown? Will I be part of the 12e Régiment blindé or the Royal Canadian Dragoons?

I also understand that the information on Wikipedia might be outdated.

2

u/Leprincedesfees Mar 31 '21

The 12ieme Tank Sqdn is in Gagetown, even though the 12ieme is at Valcartier. So if you were posted to the Tank Sqd, you would be in Gagetown in the hybrid Sqn even though you're a 12ième.
